Help re-associating physical location with songs in library

Hi,
I got a new laptop, but had my iTunes music folder and library on an external hard-drive. I installed iTunes 8 on the new laptop (windows). I answered "Yes" to have iTunes manage my music (my first mistake I believe), since when iTunes 8 came up (after setting my iTunes music folder to be my external drive -- the original location), I see all my music, but 2/3 or so (out of 10K songs) cannot find the file. I can manually go into each song, update the info and it's ok, but...this is really slow. Is there a better way to rebuild this library (or whatever needs to be rebuilt) so that I don't have to update the location for each song manually? Driving me crazy since this worked just fine before the 'new' install of iTunes.

After alot of frustration and cursing why something this easy should be made to be so hard and attempting to use copies of the .itl/.xml file to no avail (and reninstalling, etc.), I got this to be close to where I was:
1) Use Windows explore to remove most of the duplicate files that were added (I still didn't like that file names changed, etc...not happy that this occured in the first place, especially the random nature of it...but, need to quit ranting)
2) Move the .xml and .itl files to a backup location
3) Start iTunes, getting no files and a new library
4) Add folder To Library in iTunes -- point to the top level folder with all my music on the external drive. Make sure not to let iTunes manage/copy files (at this point, I'll turn it on later)
-- all music readded, with no missing tunes, like what happened when I used an old library.
5) Now I did Library -> Import Playlist and selected my most recent .xml file
6) This brought back my Purchased playlist and the other playlists (some files were missing due to the 'cleanup' I did, but that's better than doing all this by individual file)
Pretty pleased with the results...not sure if there was a better way, but I had my music on disk and wanted it in iTunes quickly.

Need help replacing original audio track with song.

Hi experts
I'm in the process of trying to create a movie for my daughters. What I did was film my daughters signing to a song that was playing on a CD player. I'd like to remove the audio track and replace it with the same song I purchased on Itunes. So far I able to import the video and song and put them on the timeline.
Now I can't never get the song I added to the timeline to play. How can this be done? And, please, point me to a good book

Yes, I import both the movie and the song into the browser. Then I drag and drop the video into the timeline (V1) the corresponding audio track is moved automatically to A1 and A2. This plays well. Now I drag and drop my purchased song to the timeline (A3 and A4). If I hit the play button it only plays my video and sound (With a beep every second or so).
It just seems that the video and music tracks aren't linked together. Sorry, just purchased FCE this weekednd

Choose music to play on different location with centralised iTunes library

Hi all,
I've a mac mini with os x server on it managing my iTunes Library via Dlink NAS *DNS 343[raid 1]* and I want this mac mini connected to my sound system through any means [either airport express or just the audio jack on mini].
But the problem is I want to choose between playing the library on my sound system or my macbook, is there something in iTunes that allows me to choose where the music will be played on?
*All these control will be made on my macbook.
*I have not bought the mini but only the osx server

The easiest way out of this is to create a new library and start again. Unfortunatley this loses all counts, ratings and play lists.
But first I am uncertain of how exactly you have things set up now.
When you talk about moving My Documents, did you move the special folder My Documents, this involves changing the registry? If so Did you change My Music, another registry change.
iTunes looks in the registry for the location of My Music and expects to find the iTunes folder there, unless you tell it otherwise with a shift key start.
So where is your iTunes folder containg your library databases - iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml? Is it still on your c: drive or did you move it to the external drive?
What is the setting for your iTunes Music folder as set in Edit>>Prefernces>>Advanced>>General?
I am going to assume that you still have your iTunes folder in the default location in My Music on the c: drive.
To create a new library, close iTunes and drag iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xm out of the iTunes folder to the desktop. Start iTunes and an new empty library is created. Check that the location of the iTunes Music folder is correct in Preferences. Then use File>>Add folder to library to add your music folder to iTunes.
Minor adjustments have to be made to the method if you have your iTunes folder elsewnere.
A couple of general points. iTunes is extremely sensitive to the path to music files and if anything changes, iTunes will not be able to find the files.
If iTunes is started with the external drive disconnected, it will default back to its default locations for the iTunes folder and iTunes Music folder.

Boundaries and Boundary Groups - 300 Physical locations

Hey guys -
I'm going to be deploying 300 or so Pull DP's across our environment. For the most part, it's one Pull-DP per physical location, with very little overlap. Only one site.
Based on what I'm reading, I'll need 300 Boundaries and 300 (seemingly identical) Boundary Groups, with one boundary per group. Am I getting this right? It doesn't seem that the new "Boundary Groups" really offers any benefits to us,
unless I am missing something; it's simply extra work for us.
Please correct me if I'm wrong though, and thanks!

You are correct you need a Boundary and a Boundary Group per Pull DP. Boundary groups makes it possible to use a boundary for Site assignment or Content location and you can reuse the boundaries created.

Laptop crash with i tunes library. Have recently sync with my work mac but I am missing all my old songs. Please help. I tunes novice.

My laptop crashed with mine and my husbands I tunes Library. I have sync my i phone with my work mac but I am still missing some of my songs.
My husband was unable to do this as his i phone broke too and he has no music at all.
Please help.

Apple devices are designed to sync with a single library. If you move the device to a new library iTunes will suggest wiping the device and reloading it with the contents of the library on the new computer, even if most of the content is identical. For an iOS device this process would also delete and reinstall any applications which would discard and settings or saved data associated with the apps. You probably don't want to do this.
Ideally you would have migrate the working library from the computer previously used to manage the device (the laptop) to the computer you now want to use (the desktop) before adding other new content into the new computer's library. That way the device would have easily moved from syncing with one machine to the other.
I'm not quite sure what the best next step is at this point. Does the desktop library sync with any other devices?

Since reinstalling itunes i can no longer sync. Error message says already synced with another itunes library. I get a blank sync - no songs, photos ect as it comes up with this error whenever try to select what is to be synced. Help - lost everything

My ipod says it was et up with another itunes library, it wasn't, and when I add songs to my library when I go back into it they are all gone, please help im going in circles

Even though it is the same music in iTunes, iTunes does not see it as the exact same library because you had to re-add all the songs to it.
You will need to erase and sync and you iPod will simply end up as it is now.
It's like of your house burns down and you rebuild it exactly the same, it is still not the "same" house it was.

My computer isnt able to "locate the song(s)" in itunes...HELP!!!

So I downloaded some songs a couple of weeks ago and forgot to load them on to my ipod. A few days later when I went to load it on itunes told me it couldnt locate the music. So then I tried to listen to it on itunes and a ! came up next to the song and told me that it couldnt locate the song. Now I cant listen to any of my songs on itunes. What do I do? Please help!!

Anytime the songs are moved out of one folder in windows and into another iTunes looses track of where it is. You will have to locate where the songs are on your harddrive and then when you click on the song in itunes, a pop up will come saying it can not locate it and will give you the option to locate it.

ITunes 7.0 PROBLEM with song recognition--HELP

I upgraded to 7.0 last night and probably. I have approximately 12,000 songs. But for possibly a third of them there is an exclamation point to the left of the song. When you double click on it a message says: iTunes cannot locate the song.
I can continue with the option to find the song, but I have to do it all manually, song by song. This will take forever.
Any thoughts---HELP

You're not the only one.
I had about 40GB of music on my PC. I had happily been using version 6 of iTunes. The iTunes music store forced me to upgrade because the latest Scissor Sisters album was only available if I upgraded. Grrr....
On upgrading it deleted everything after the first half-dozen folders in my "Downloads" directory (I had my own filing system, I didn't let it organise it itself - Downloads were stuff I'd downloaded from my Slimp3 server, not stuff downloaed using P2P). I could even watch it do it! Bang! All in one go. No warning, no folder at a time, the whole lot in one sitting. Amazing.
I recopied down. Started iTunes, bang! Same folders all went again.
Uninstalled iTunes 7, went back to 6. Redownloaded, fine!
Upgraded to 7, Bang! Same folders went again.
Removed all the prior indexes, etc, same thing.
Absolutely farcical.

Associating artwork with songs without embedding images in song files

Is it possible to associate artwork with songs in iTunes without embedding images in song files?
I'd like to see album covers in iTunes but don't want to waste the storage space on my iPod.

You can add your own artwork (for covers iTunes does not get) to coverflow wihtout embedding it into the ID3 tags.

Diff between associating Business rule with Planing & Essbase Locations

Hi Guys,
I know this can be an elementary level question ..we know we are able to run a Business rule by associating it with a Planning outline & also an Essbase Outline..Just wanted to know the difference .i.e does associating the BR with the Planning Outline provide any extra benefits...??

Not all clients that buy essbase also buy planning and business rules can be used with either so you that is why there needs to be two connections.

Can't access songs in iTunes. There are exclamation marks on about half of my library. When I try to play them I get: "Can't find the file" notice and iTunes asks me to locate each song. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

I had not opened my iTunes in weeks. When I opened it today, most of the songs in my library had exclamation marks beside them and when I clicked on them got the message: "the song could not be used because the original file cannot be found", then asks me if I want to locate it. When I press "locate" tab I am led to iTunes folders and have to hunt around for the song. Some songs I can't find in the folders. Any ideas as to why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?
Help would be much appreciated.

The problem of tracks becoming de-linked between iTunes and the music files in your iTunes music folder happens for different reasons - this seems to come up fairly commonly in this forum.
The solution can be to locate each song in the iTunes library, as you mentioned - or, but wait, before I get to that...
trouble finding the original track in your iTunes music folder? maybe look for it under compilations, or if not using the 'group compilations preference' then look in the folder under the songs artist name, but what song artist name iTunes uses depends on what you have in the metedata tag spot for album artist or song artist. Any varyation in artist name spelling, in the menu item 'get info' metadata for any selected individual track will cause iTunes to create that as a separate artist folder in the library, even names like 'various' or any difference at all (even the word 'the' can change where in your iTunes music folder a track gets placed by iTunes). You can try to use the finder function of find file (finder munu item outside of iTunes) to locate hard to find items.
Back to how to re-link any de-linked tracks .
There may be scripts that can help re-link de-linked music files - or, at least provide you a list of such files, Scripts are easy to install and use...
