Help re repairing permissions

Hi all, I hope I'm posting this in the right forum! i like many of us have just upgraded to Leopard with little or no difficulty. However last night before shutting down my MP i decided to repair permissions to ensure everything was still okay as it was a new O/S. On completing "Verify permissions I was given the following information:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreService/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Has anyone had the same message?
Does anyone know what it means?
Do I need to take any action? if so what would you suggest?
As I said earlier everything seems okay, and Time machine is backing up to my D2 Quadra external HD via Firewire 800 without issue. Your advice and guidance would be very much appreciated re this issue as I'm not sure how to proceed.
Thanks in anticipation of your valued help,
Denis

I found the same thing when when repairing permissions after noticing the slow boot up I have with Leopard and the taskbar taking so long to render. I was a little paranoid at first, but I am more at ease now.
Thanks for the post

  • Help With Repair Permissions!

    Hi All,
I have a June 2009 17" 2.8 UMBP. I keep getting regular Spinning Beach Balls, Lock Ups, Delays and a whole host of Trackpad Issues much like many people are experiencing with the 1.7 Firmware Update which only is supposed to affect the 13" & 15" UBMP Models. I read on another post that Apple recommended to "Verify & Repair Disk Permissions" which I done. The problems still remain and the report in "Verfiy Permissions" is exactly the same (it seems) as that of the "Repair Permissions" and where it says "Repair Permissions Complete" at the end. The "Repair Permissions" Report still says that "Permissions Differ" on all lines - how can they have been repaired if they still differ? I am a novice and not technically aware about Macs so I hope someone can help me. Here is a copy of the report:

    Hi
I think you will find that many people are suffering this very same problem with permissions, it is nothing to be too concerned about and will in all probability disappear after a system update sometime in the future.
There was a similar problem when I had a PowerBook G4 every time you repaired permissions it showed a whole raft of errors which would not go away. Eventually Apple released a system update and they all vanished.
It is not broken and it is not going to impact on the running of the computer in anyway.
I have just got a new MBP and have the same permission problem but my trackpad is functioning perfectly and I don't suffer any spinning beach ball.
I would contact Apple, or go into an Apple Store and seek advice about the trackpad and spinning beach ball as these are probably caused by other problems than permissions being wrong.

  • Help with Repairing Permissions G4 iBook 10.5

My daughter is visiting and I tried to use the Disk Utility to Repair the
Permissions on her G4 iBook running OS X 10.5. It cranked and cranked but
never did repair the permission or really fail either.
It still works but I would feel better if I could get the permissions repaired.
Also, the screen really seems dim compared to the new 13-inch MacBook Pro.
Is there a fix to crank up the brightness on a G4 iBook?

Ah, yes! The leopard disc utility. What a crock of poop that is. You can let it run overnight and it probably still won't finish. It only takes 90 seconds in Tiger. The best thing to do is to install Onyx and let it take care of the disc maintenance.
After you install Onyx run 'Automation'. It will repair permissions, clear caches and run the cron scripts in one command. Also, it will only take 15 minutes or so to complete a full string of maintenance tasks. Give up on the disc utility in Leopard.

  • Repair Permissions in Single User Mode

So, I have searched various posts and have yet to find anything that has worked so far. Hopefully, someone can still help. I recently made the mistake of changing my permissions on my hard drive. I clicked "Get Info" for the Boot volume and changed the permissions for "Everyone." I thought I had corrected it, but now when I try to boot, it just sits at the apple grey screen with the spinner and never loads the OS. Judging from other comments, this appears to be a permissions issue and all I need to do is repair the permissions which is why I ran through these commands in Single User mode:
/sbin/fsck -fy<return> --I did this twice to fix the drive
    /sbin/fsck -fy<return>
    /sbin/mount -uw<return>
    /sbin/autodiskmount -va <return>
    /usr/sbin/diskutil repairPermissions /<return>
    sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
I am having to run through the Single User mode because I do not have the SL install disk. However, I have Windows installed on a Boot Camp partition and I can access files on the mac side but everything is read only.
I am a novice at the command line so any guidance on what commands might help to repair permissions would be great.

Found this for Leopard. Will probably work in 10.6
Run these commands and hit enter after each. Be careful with the spaces; keep exactly as written. There are various suggestions in this thread, which you might first want to check out, but this seems to be the most promising.
    http://forums.macnn.com/90/mac-os-x/370223/changed-hd-permissions-mac-wont-get/
    mount -uw /
    chmod 775 /
    chmod 1775 /
    Then restart
BTW, not recommended to repair Permissions from the install disk, since if you've updated since installing, those will be out of date and incorrect. Permissions Repair should be done from the normal boot volume.

    Hi,
I have just picked up a new unibody MBP 2.53GHz 4GB RAM, and have installed the latest software updates, after which I used disk utility to repair the permissions.
I received the following messages and would be grateful if someone could tell me if these items are normal for a brand new machine.
    Many thanks for any help.

So it looks like  solved it for now I will update later. What I did was after starting from the install cd for the 10.6 system I ran from terminal ran:
    diskutil disablejournaling /dev/disk0s2
    diskutil disableownership /dev/disk0s2
    diskutil repairPermissions /dev/disk0s2
then i closed terminal and then when to disk utility and chose to repair disk with results all was fine. Then ran repair permissions and got similar results from terminal function next I erased disk and then chose to restore from time machine and it is now restoring! yea!

    I've fixed the problem - I think.
I forgot I had the program "Little Snitch" installed on my computer. So I went into it and saw that it was blocking most of my connections for all the programs I use on a daily basis. Once I lifted the RULE to those certain programs - BAM - everything came back to life in an instant!

  • Help Required - Ran "Repair Permissions" and lost files

I was having a few unknown errors with my computer lately... (iBook G4, Purchased November, 2005) I was unable to print, OS 9 was not loading, and everything was really slow.
When looking around in my computer (Only been using a Mac as long as I have had this computer), I found the disk utility and figured that would be a good place to start. After running the "Repair Permissions", I was pleased to see my computer was running quicker, and my programs were opening properly.
    Now...The problem....
I used to have a fairly cluttered desktop...and as of a few weeks ago, I took everything, and put it into a new folder in the Hard Drive. After the Repair was finished, I found that particular folder was deleted. My Trash was still empty, and when searching for that folder, sub folders, and programs there, they were no where to be found. Also, it appears it was only this folder (It was called Main Directory if that helps at all) that was deleted.
I have noticed, that a few of the programs deleted do have files in the "Cache" folder....But I don't know what good that does me.
Any help in recovering these lost files would be greatly appreciated
PS. Yes....I have learned now not to poke around and run utilities that I don't know what they really do...at least without backing up my hard drive.

    I'm sorry.....I made a mistake...I got the computer 2004.

  • I have a MacBook Pro and all of the sudden I can't open MS Word. I can open all other Office applications. What's up? I have reinstalled, reset PRAM, done a Safe Boot, and Repaired Permissions. Nothing works. Help...

I have ms office 2011 for mac. I cannot open the "word" program. Everything else powerpoint and excel works just fine. The problem is with word only. The icon just bounces until I force quit. I tried to reinstall, repaired permissions, etc. please help.

Try posting on the MS Office for Mac user forums - here's a direct link to the Word forum - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macword.
It might be that you just need to update. Do you have the Office updater set to check for updates every week or so? Note that the updater actually only works when you restart or cold boot.
Try the forum - they've always been very helpful for me...

  • Can't rip CD, can't repair permissions, help!

I moved my itunes music library to an external firewire hard drive because my main hard drive was getting too full. Now, I cannot rip music from a CD to the hard drive because I don't have the right "permissions". Nor can I rip to my main hard drive and copy to the external. I tried to repair permissions with disk utility, but it doesn't give me that option for the external drive.
I'm not sure how to work around this problem, can somebody help?

OK, yes this probably would be a good topic to post in the forum relevant to your computer hardware. I have 3 internal hard drives at the moment, and am getting ready to add a 4th, so this is pretty familiar territory. If you have the manual that came with the computer (you can download it from Apple's site if you don't) you should find the right information on drive locations and jumper settings, etc. As long as you get that stuff right, you should easily be able to boot from the current (soon-to-be "old") drive or from your OS X install disc and use Disk Utility to restore the current boot volume to the new drive (or partition/volume on that drive). At that point you can set your Startup Disk preferences so that the computer boots by default from the OS X volume on the new hard drive.
With three high-capacity drives in your computer, you'll have lots of options. I personally don't keep any media files at all on my boot drive, just to keep things on that volume as simple as possible. The other two drives contain copies of my various media libraries, and this works very well for my purposes.

  • Help...can't repair permissions...

I installed Leopard tonight and seems to be working fine, but why can't I repair permissions? When I try to do this it goes about 1/4 of the way over, saying only "Repairing Disk Permissions" in the box and just doesn't go any further. When I click to quit, the bar quickly fills up and says that I stopped the disk permission repair, but also says Disk Permissions Repaired successfully...Did I get this done? Do we still need to do this with Leopard? Why does it stop. I never had any problems with my previous OS. Any help is appreciated.

When it acts like it is hanging it isn't. Give it up to ten minutes longer. Read this article http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1305308

  • Plz help...problem w/ verify/repair permissions after software update

    Hi,
I just ran the software update from the Mac menu and wanted to verify/repair permissions afterwards. First I used Onyx and when it was executing, the system would not respond after a couple of minutes. So then I tried Disk Utility and I get a message saying "Disk Utility internal error: Disk Utility has losts its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility." And I did, and the same message appears.
    What else can I do?
    Thanks.
    PowerBook G4 15   Mac OS X (10.3.6)

Have just done software download - gone to repair permissions and have got same message. Running on 10.3.9. Anyone any ideas as to what is going on here. Did NOT run repair permissions before the update (Yes I know I should have done). Could this be a factor. There are a number of other threads on this forum concerning this exact problem - but so far have found no explanation or solutions.
Disk varified and reported OK. Mac seems to be operating OK. How does Disk utility "link" to Disk Management Tool?
    Any help much appreciated.
    Thanks
