Help recording guitar

first of all, let me say i am new to this and completely clueless about recording in general.
i just want to record some guitar and maybe some voice tracks.
i realize i need a lot more equipment and better hardware and software, but i'm not looking for studio quality recordings at this point, just something half way decent i can listen to.
i have no equipment besides my laptop hp g60-120us 2ghz,  4gb ram, and a samson g track usb microphone that i just bought.
could someone please show me how to set up adobe audition and my laptop properly so that i can get the most out of what limited equipment i have.
when i record now, i get a lot of white noise in the background...how would i go about getting rid of the white noise?
do i needs a asio driver?

Welcome! I could have a go at this, starting from the bottom:
You do need an ASIO driver to work well with modern soundcards and get realtime playback for overdubs.
The white noise may very well stem from the internal sound circuit or from level mismatch, or both. You should not use the internal sound input for any serious recording; it's not what it's meant for and the quality doesn't stand up.
Samson makes good stuff, and the mic itself is probably fine. You will however run into trouble using it as USB device togheter with another sound device; this is a limitation within the current ASIO technology (see below).
You do need a proper soundcard, like the M-Audio FastTrack
- which is just as a suggestion. There are many products to choose from for little money now. For your use it must have at least one mic input AND a guitar input (often labeled Hi-z or Instrument as well). Typically one input will double as mic / guitar.
Install its driver - typically before you even connect the device! - and then when everything is clear, open Audition and select it as your input/output device. This is described in the Audition manual.
You do need to connect your speakers and/or headphones to this soundcard now. With ASIO you do need to use the same device for both input and output. I am not sure if you can use your Samson USB mic in this setup. If it has an ordinary audio connection, just connect that to the soundcard.
Recording is simple: Point to a track, select an input, arm for record (red R), Record...
Overdubs: turn OFF the previous red R, point to a new track, do the same as above.
You may want to record the guitar with some effects on (distortion, chorus, whatever). Click on the Fx button just above the track headers, and from the Fx Rack you can select an effect to add to your track. Audition has some basic electric guitar effects built in, for starters.
You can even add reverb on your vocals the same way. I recommend the Studio Reverb effect here, since it won't strangle your computer as fast...
At the lower right corner of your Audition screen, check that 'Audition Mix' is selected!
There's much to be found about recording in general on the net, but the Audition manual is also a worthwhile read.

  • I need help recording guitar

I want to use Garageband to record my guitar music. Money is not an issue. I'll buy some gear if I need to. I just don't know where to begin or what to buy. I just want to record from my acoustic electric guitar and maybe lay some rhythm tracks over the top. Mostly just guitar so I can create a archive of my compositions. Put a halfway decent sounding CD together. Any ideas? Where does one begin.

I use a Rode NT2000 condenser Mic and a Beyerdynamic dynamic mic. I also plug the guitar in and record 3 tracks at a time.
Out of curiosity, where do you place each mic and which Beyerdynamic do you use? (oh, and what kind of guitar do you have)?
    The Beyerdynamic is a TGX 58 http://asia-pacific.beyerdynamic.com/en/music-performance/products/microphones/v ocals-speech.html?txsbproductdatabase_pi1%5BshowUid%5D%5BshowUID%5D=3&tx_sbproductdatabasepi1%5BshowUid%5D%5BbackPID%5D=49&cHash=e15356a2b4
It was the first mic I got and its probably not the best choice. I have it as a multi purpose mic.
In terms of mic placement I am constantly tweaking. Right now the NT2000 is in front of the sound hole about 1ft-300mm away. The TGX 58 is positioned about half way between the sound hole and the head, slightly closer than the NT. I must admit though its the result of 'monkey see, monkey do.' I got the info from this site http://www.recordacousticguitar.com/ I am currently not happy though with my results. My studio room has to take a large portion of the blame. Its layout and acoustic treatment was not very well thought out, but I am not sure where to begin to correct it. Also, getting to know the mics has been hard. The NT has some adjustments available but I am afraid my 'ear' is still on the steep side of the learning curve. One thing I have noticed is the mics ability to pick up sympathetic string resonance. Its hardly noticeable when listening to the guitar live, but upon playback its maddening. My current project involves recording some of my beginner students compositions. They are single note 1st and 2nd string melodies. I have resorted to shoving a folded piece of card board under strings 3-6 simply to damped the strings. When I just plug the guitar in and record via the bridge pickup, the sympathetic humming is less than what comes from the NT. Once done I then just muck around with all three tracks with fx etc (thats another story).
I use 2 acoustic guitars with bridge pickups. My nylon string guitar is a Greg Bennett C2CE http://www.gregbennettguitars.com/c2ce.html
My steel string is a Yamaha CJ-838S II similar to this one http://www.guitar-museum.com/guitar-231-VINTAGE-YAMAHA-CJ-838S-II-ACOUSTIC-GUITA R . I have had this instrument since new in 1984. I had a pick installed when I had some fret work done and the action reworked in 1993. Its a nice guitar.
Trying to record halfway decent acoustic guitar has not been easy. I am hardly ever pleased. I don't know if I am picky or simply don't know what I am doing. Probably a combo of both. It dosn't help that I have crap monitors as well.
    Cheers. G.

  • Help Recording Guitar Using USB Interface?

Hi! I am pretty new to recoring my music, so bear with me. I'm using Adobe Audition CS6 and a Behringer Guitar Link Interface. I've gone to the Audio Hardware and selected the ASIO driver, and found it fine, but I am unable to record. The record button is disabled. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong/have suggestions? Much appreciated!

Well, at the risk of stating the obvious, on the same screen as where you selected the ASIO driver as the Device Class, did you go to Audio Channel Mapping (also on the Edit/Preferences menu) and select your device?  It'll probably be called something like "Behringer USB device" or something similar.
If you have and it still doesn't work, I notice on the Behringer site that it says it provides drivers for both MME and ASIO.  If that's right, it might be worth going to MME under Device Class and seeing if the Behringer is there to select as your default input.

  • Help with recording guitar on GarageBand using M-Audio Firewire Solo

Hello everyone. I hope someone can help me. I recently bought a new mac mini and M-Audio Firewire Solo to record music. I'm new at recording so I have no idea what to do.
The problem is when I record playing the guitar, the sound is so low, I can barely hear the guitar playing when I play it back. I turned the gain to maximum level and I still can barely hear the guitar record. I know it's recording because I can hear the guitar when I play the record back, but the sound is way too low.
The weird thing is that the microphone works fine and when I record vocals, I can hear the playback fine.
Did I miss anything? Is there a good setting for recording guitars using M-Audio Firewire Solo? Is it because M-Audio Firewire Solo is not compatible with the latest Mac Mini system?
    Please help! Thank you!

I connect the guitar to the guitar input that is in front of M-Audio firewire solo using this cable: http://www.livewire-usa.com/products/products.cfm?sBrand=adv . Then I turn gain up to the maximum level.
When I play the guitar, you know the bar that goes green on garageband (not sure what it's called)? Even if I strum really hard, the green never goes up past 1/4 of the bar. When I'm using the mic and speak a bit loudly, I can see that bar turning red. So it seems like it's not reading the input properly, but really I'm not sure, so hopefully you'll be able to help me
I'm actually using the mac mini's speaker to hear the sound, so I'm not sure if it's only coming from one speaker or not.
Sorry if I miss any important detail. I'm a newbie. And as always, I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions!

  • Correct Settings for Latency When Recording Guitar Direct...with Duet?

Could anyone tell me what the idea setup is for the lowest latency when recording guitar parts through an amp plug in when using Logic with a Duet? And also for just recording live acoustic (with no plug in, maybe a bit of echo)?
    Thanks
    Tom

My question was dead serious: Why don't you try out different latency settings and observe? Nobody can tell you what your hardware will behave like, how you're monitoring and how much latency will make you happy.
Your attitude is not exactly helping.
    Cheers,
    Jazz
Sorry, but leaving a one line post that says basically "Try it and find out" is probably not what most would feel was a helpful reply.
And on the contrary, a lot of people use the Duet, use Logic, and are guitarists, so sharing what they've found successful is a reasonable expectation, I think.

  • No sound or strange sounds when trying to record guitar

    Hi!
I'm new to Logic Pro, after having worked with garageband for many years.  I've just been trying to record guitar through my audio interface, with strange results.  I've set my audio in and output source as my M-Audio firewire solo, created an audio track, and selected the guitar sound I want.  At first there was no input, then when I deleted the first track and created a new one, I could hear the guitar through the monitor and it was being input, but it had a horrible distorted and out of tune sound - and that was how it sounded when I recorded it too.  Then I tried it again and it seemed to be working fine for about 5 minutes - it sounded fine through the headphones and the recording was right - but then went back to the strange sounds again - without me changing anything!
I'm using Logic Pro 9.1.8, on a Macbook Pro running Mac OSX 10.8.3, and have a M-Audio Firewire Solo audio interface.
I'm very frustrated right now - so I'd be grateful for any help!
    Thanks,
    Stephen

    Hi stephenhis,
If you are having issues with imput audio in Logic Pro, the first place to start would be with some basic isolation troubleshooting to see if the issue can be localized. That should provide a good basis for further troublshooting should the issue persist.

  • So i'm recording guitar.... Is there any way to get the drums to match me?

    I've been working with Garageband,
and I got the whole recording guitar and bass thing down
but say i'm writing my own stuff
and i like a drum loop thats in garageband
just some drum set loops that i like
how can i adjust their speed so that they go on beat with my guitar riff and actually sound good?
will these change ALL the tempo of my project?
I just want to be able to record a guitar riff, select a drum track, and sync the drum track to the guitar riff so it's on beat and i can make the song sound more complete

The question here is timing. If you recorded your parts sticking to an exact tempo, then you can add a drum loop. But if you didn't set the BPM to match your recording you're going to have trouble. You'd have to then figure out the BPM you played at, then set it accordingly, uncheck "follow tempo & pitch" for the regions you already recorded, then add the loops. But, as I said, unless you followed the tempo exactly, which is very unlikely, it won't match. Go ahead and experiment and you'll see what we're saying.
You can create your own beat after the fact by playing software drums along with your parts, but that will take longer for sure.
But why not lay down the loops and then replay the parts you wrote?

Hi, I have this exact same problem. I haven't been using an iRig, just a cheap USB-jack cable. I managed to do this with the first cable I bought, but since it broke I've been unable to find a replacement that allows me to hear the drums while recording. DId you manage to get over this issue? If so I would really like to know how. Thanks and best wishes.

  • Help required: Guitar to USB Lead cuts all sound

Hi, I'm having a small problem I'm hoping someone clever here might have a quick solution to:
I recently bought this Guitar to USB lead:
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=225789
And plugged it into my MacBook after booting up Logic. The problem is that
when the lead is plugged in it cuts all sound from Logic - i.e. I cannot
hear any other tracks playing, nor indeed the guitar sound itself (but
other applications such as Safari do have sound). Logic is recognising the
lead's input, the levels go up when I strum the guitar and I can record the
guitar as audio into Logic. But I cannot hear the recorded guitar parts or
anything else until I remove the USB lead. Which makes the thing pretty
useless really...unless of course I'm being useless (a likely outcome).
So, can anyone supply a reason why plugging in this USB to guitar lead into
a Macbook with Logic is cutting all sound from Logic?
    Thanks
(I bought this lead because I wanted a simple and cheap plug-and-play to connect my guitar to Logic - if someone has another solution for this then I'd also be interested in hearing that - thanks!)

I'm pretty sure an Aggregate device -WILL- work. In fact I know you have to use one.
Make sure your Aggregate device uses the Built-in audio OUT as the master clock device.
Also, If your USB guitar shows up as both an input and output device in aggregate setup -do not- include the output device newly created aggregate device.

And again I am not very informed on how to work computers as well as most of you are, just saying. thanks!!!
P.S.: In my about this mac thing, it says i have version 10.9.1, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, and Memory is 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

    Could you do this?
    Go to Finder
    Go to Applications
    Go to Utilities folder
    Launch Activity Monitor app
go to its Memory tab on top
tell us what you see at the very bottom?
Here is a sample of mine.
I bet your page/swap amount will be huge.
If there is not enough RAM, OS X temporarily stores RAM data on the harddrive and tries to retrieve it back into RAM when needed, unfortunately that is so slow that GB throws an error as it cannot play it all in real time.

  • How to record guitar in Logic Pro 8

    Hi,
Well, I´ve got a Mac Mini, Logic Pro 8, Audio Kontrol 1 audio interface, and an acoustic guitar. What I would like to do is to record my guitar songs into Logic Pro 8 and add other sound effects. My problem is, however, that I can´t figure out how to record guitar using Logic Pro 8. In the "Preferences" I choose "Core Audio" as device. I connect my guitar into the audio interface (Audio Kontrol 1) and from the audio interface to my Mac Mini using an USB.
When I start playing, Logic Pro is silent. When I record, there is no sound. What is even more strange is that GarageBand is working perfect! So I guess it has something to do with the settings in Logic Pro 8. So, I ask you guys...do you know have to solve this problem? If so, I would be very grateful!
    Best regards,
    Tor

    Thanks guys!
I will try this as soon as I come home!
I will let you know how it works.
    Tor
Well, I mentioned the aggregate audio device since I saw this article. Is this possible for me? Why should I do this?

  • Need help Recording G-Force VST's Like MInimonsta and M-Tron

    Hello everyone!
Having a great time with logic pro 7 so far,
I need some help recording my G-Force synths.
Do I use the instrument,Rewire, or Audio tracks?
Any basic setup tips would be golden!
    Thanks Folks

    1.5 ghz, 1 gig ram   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

You should be using the AU versions... any reason not to or was the VST term used as a generic term for softsynth? They are avalable as AU.
You would use an Audio Instrument track and then where you would set the input if it were an audio track... in audio instrument this is a pop up for your softdynths/samplers.
Once you are ready to commit them as audio files then use "export track as audio file".

  • Zoom G2.1u USB interface to record guitar

The Zoom is my floor guitar effects unit, but is also a USB interface. What do I need to record guitar into Garageband other than that, if anything? How/where do I set up the input preferences on the Mac so it reads the signal?
Related, I want to record 4-track tapes to digital. I have the cables that connect the red/white audio outs to the 1/4" input on the Zoom, then the USB to the computer. Will that work?
Thanks in advance for answering my dumb questions!

You have the G2 set for both input and output in the Garageband preferences. Choose the built-in output to monitor from the mac or plug the headphones into the G2.

  • Equipment for recording guitar/vocal/bass into Garageband

    Hi Everyone!
I really want to get into recording in Garageband and need some opinions on some gear to get.
I would like to record an acoustic guitar, some vocals and possible an electric bass guitar.
What do i need inbetween the instruments & my mac?
I am guessing I will need a USB device that takes Balanced XLR in (for the mic), standard guitar jack (whats the proper name for one of these???).
At least I would just like to record the acoustic guitar, a crappy microphone (unbalanced over mini jack) and the bass guitar
    Thanks!
    Adam

    Hi Adam,
I was in the same situation 2 months ago and I finally bought the M-Audio Firewire 410 recording interface. Wow. You have four inputs (2 XLR, 2 jacks) and 10 outputs. It's perfect for home recording. Electric and accoustic guitars, vocals, basses, or any instruments you like, this machine will do the job. The quality is impressive for the price (between 300 and 400 canadian $). I would say to you to purchase a firewire interface instead of a USB one, because with firewire you wont have latency problems and the overall quality will mainly be better than USB (larger amount of information passing throught the wire).
    Hope it will help you
