Help recoreding with Isight in Imovie HD
Hi, I bought an Isight the other day and i am having a tough time figuring out how to get the Ichat to recored or show up in Imovie Hd. I went to help in Imovie and i read them, but when it says clcik the triangle next to the camera mode, there is no triangle, I just got a 12in Powerbook and i am still trying to find my way through iMovie. Please help me get my Ichat in iMovie
Hello Nicholas.
Welcome to Apple Discussions.
When you "... have everything but my mouse unplugged from the USB and Firewire ports." you have "No Camera Attached".
Try plugging in your iSight
b before
you launch iMovie.
If iMovie
b then
does not recognize iSight, leave your iSight plugged in, quit iMovie and immediately launch QuickTime Pro or iChat AV. If either of these apps now recognize your iSight, perform your regular Mac OS X maintenance and try again.
If you iMovie still does not recognize iSight but other apps do, I would guess that you have a problem with your iMovie itself. In that case, I suggest you try the FAQs or relevant topics in iMovie HD Discussions.

I want to record 5+ hours with iSight in iMovie'08
I am trying to record my dog while I'm at work using my iSight in iMovie '08. The only problem is that when I come home to playback what's been recorded, it's only recorded approximately one hour and 45 minutes. Is there any way I can make it record for the entire 5 hours that I am away? Thanks!
Welcome to Discussions, Fran.
Some suggestions for your consideration:
(1) As a dog lover, my best suggestion is that you take pooch to work or change jobs to a place that allows it. Being a pack animal, puppy will miss you HORRIBLY while you are away unless there is some other part of the "pack" there.
(2) iMovie should work if you have space. However, digital video takes a LOT of space (220 Mb/minute!), so a lack of free space will cause problems for you. To work properly, OS X also needs additional free space beyond that required for file storage. For "5+ hours" of recording with iMovie, check to be sure that you have about 100 Gb of available space on your hard disk.
If space is a problem and you cannot delete enough of your files for sufficient room, you might consider storing or moving your video library to an external hard disk.
(3) Also, to reduce processor load for capture and recording, quit all other apps before starting your iMovie session. Do anything else you can to reduce processor and disk workload while you record, too.&ensp.For instance, if you use wireless, turn off your Airport card.
(4) Be sure your Mac is running at its peak. Your system info shows that you are still using Mac OS X (10.5.3). Unless there is compelling reason to the contrary, you should update to the latest version of Leopard. If you do not want to upgrade to Snow Leopard, use 10.5.8.
If you upgrade to 10.6, follow its instructions. Otherwise, I suggest the following method for updating your OS:
First, use Disk Utility to repair permissions. Then download and apply the 10.5.8 COMBO update:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
Repair permissions IMMEDIATELY again after the restart that finishes the installation.
(5) One other alternative is to try a different application for your video recording. Although many apps can record movie or video clip, I usually use QuickTime Pro. QT Pro is easy to use, and it has a Preferences... > Recoding setting that allows you to change the recording quality to capture smaller files. These smaller video streams might work better for the long duration recording you want.

I have just got an Isight camera and want to chat to someone with only Windows, no Mac. How do I do it?? To use IChat they have to have an Apple right? I am completely baffled by all this!!!!
How do I do it??
Mac Video Chat with PCsTo use IChat they have to have an Apple right?Yes, to use iChat. There is NO PC version of iChat. However, they do not nave to have iChat or Apple to connect with iChat AV.
If you need help beyond this and beyond what is available in your Mac's iChat > Help, try this link for more about Using iSight. -
Can anybody help me with iSight
Hi all … I'm new to this, but have been a mac user for years. Just recently had my eMac go on me so I have bought the iMac 17' Widescreen… I updated everything from my old mac to this one and then the computer wouldn't start… so I blanked the hardrive and start again by just transfering the email and settings over… updated to the latest patches from apple and instant my messengers from Yahoo and MSN and now my iSight camera doesn't work… doesn't turn on via the green light on boot up either… it just say when I launch Photo Booth or the others that uyuou can use it with, that it's being used by another program. Can anybody help me? Please save me?
Cheers DaveGood plan, Dave.
Sorry iSight is still not working. You have been certainly been thorough in your efforts.
Before you visit your Apple Service Technician, you may want to check this Apple KBase article. Be certain that none of the apps that can use iSight are launching automatically because they have been set as System Preference... > Accounts > Login Items.
If that does not correct your problem, and if you did not use the "Combo Updater" after you reinstalled your system software, repair permissions and apply this Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (Intel) now. Finish with another Permissions Repair and check your iSight again.
Using the appropriate Combo Updater (there are different ones for iNtel and PowerPC Macs) to update to the most current version of Mac OS X often seems to correct problems that may persist after updating via OS X via the "Software Update..." feature.
If the above suggestions do not help, I can think of no better suggestion than the visit to the Apple Service Tech that you suggest.
It is very good of you to consider others that may share your problem. We will be watching for your report on how you get sorted.
Cheers,

New problem with camera and imovie 08
i have two questions already posted about my camera not being found by imovie 08 except that it did it the first time and wouldn't any time after that.
well here's the new problem. as i'm sitting here trying to find some other post that could help me with my dilemna imovie opens and shows my impost screen but says "communication error". with my first joy and imovie working again came confusion about this error. the error makes it so i cannot import video because the next "error" that comes up says my camera is disconnected or off but even this is farther than i've gotten in weeks. i don't know what this error means and i still can't import video. anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this?Hi
Test another FW-Cable.
Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
Toogle in iMovie pref: Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape:
Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Exchange formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)
What Camcorder ?
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
Using WHAT ? :
• Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
• QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
• iMovie 8 (7.1.?) ?
• iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? (Others don't count)
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into
this and have a re-try.
from LKN 1935:
Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935
from Karsten:
in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
a technical check:
connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
choose 'About../More..
under Firewire.. what do you read..?

Help Needed With iMovie - Thank You
I am working on a project with someone using iMovie. Here are my questions regarding iMovie:
My project involves all stills which i want to animate with pans and zooms.
1. Most important: what is the optimal size/proportion - - in pixels and in resolution -- for adding stills to iMovie?
2. I can't find a pan function under the Ken Burns effect, only zoom.
I want to pan along my vertical images, so that the image moves up or down the screen. Is there a way to do this in iMovie? Is it possible to important an image whose height is longer than the screen size and then move the screen view along it within allowable parameters.
3. Someone told me that i need to work in 640 x 480 format at 72 dpi in order to burn to DVD from iMovie. When i imported images this size, they loaded, then immediately disapppeared. The little screen went white, and so did the clip thumbnail. They did not show while
playing either. Then i figured out that they should be 720 x 480.
Some of these load correctly, and others get cropped in iMovie. The vertically oriented pix that i did not format to 720 have black banding added, which i expected, but are also cropped at top and bottom. How can i avoid this cropping?
Please send replies to me by email at [email protected]
Thank you for helping me.
Sincerely,
Pati McDermott

iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9) I don't know what version or OS my friend has and she is the one doing most of the work on this.in addition to Brie's excellent hints... :
in computer lingo you have TWO terms defining the quality of a picture:
pixels and "dots per inch" (dpi)
pixels is, what you see on your screen.. (get closer.. CLOSER.. there: · << a dot, NO! a pixel...)
printed products also have "pixels".. BUT: in print, they define quality by how many pixels dots fit into one inch.. the more the better... way back in computer history (a few months ago...) a "large" 15 screen with 800x600 pixels had.. < math > ~72 dots per inch.. now, if you set a 20" screen to 800x800 pixel.. you'll get < math > .. ehm, less dots per inch/dpi..
a screen has a DEFINED number of dots pixels.. EVERY video screen displays only 720x480, if it is a giant 30" plasma, or a 25years old 7" b/w tube... (OK, now we have HiDef: they offer more pixel, but again a fixed, defined number of pixels....)
different in print:
an average flyer has 150 dpi... a blinky magazine (Vogue) has 300dpi... INDEPENDENTLY of the size of the pic... you can make 1200 pixeldots fit into < math > 4 inches... or 10inches..
so, some pic files contain BOTH data: the resolution (pixel) AND the dots needed for print (dpi) ..
video = fix resolution
print = variable resolution...
read Brie's comment, but why a higher resolution is useful in video/iMovie.. -
IMovie not recording sound with iSight image
In system preferences > sound, I have Built-in microphone selected. But Audacity won't record sound (never works anyway) and iMovie will record image from the iSight, but no sound.
What am I missing? You're welcome. After further investigation, not only does the volume in the system preferences affect the mic, the actual "voice over" (microphone icon) does as well, even though I'm recording with iSight and not, specifically, a voice over.
However, fantastic YouTube video diaries or whatever they're called must be done on a PC or a Mac that knows how to shut up. If there's one thing right now that's about to make this computer fly through the air, it's the fans that rev up to 6000 and even an external mic picks up the noise. Not much I can do about it. Maybe Snow Leopard and iLife '09 solved the issue. -
When I try to work with some photos Imovie gets stuck and then it stops to work at all. It happens only with some specific photos,is there a way to repair them?I can't go on this way, help me please
Hi,
The movie is probably MPEG format.
QuickTime Pro and iMovie cannot transcode audio contained in MPEG movies.
Try to convert with SimpleMovieX or MPEG Streamclip instead.

Recording with iSight???
Hello!
I was wondering if it is possible to record off of my television with iSight/iMovie? Simply pointing the iSight at the TV really isn't what I'm looking for. I was hoping that there is a way I could get iSight/iMovie to work as a capture card.
If this is possible, what types of cables would I need?
Thanks,
HunterWelcome to Apple Discussions, JHB1422
The only way to use iSight to capture your TV is the way you do NOT want to use.
Neither iSight nor iMovie can function as a capture card. Additional hardware is required.
There are a number of Mac compatible TV capture devices available. The Apple Store sells Elgato EyeTV Hybrid.
Your Apple retailer may be able to suggest other ways depending upon what equipment you already own. Moreover, your dealer can certainly help you determine what cables are needed to connect your system components to any new equipment you select.

Quick capture with iSight or any DV-cam
Hello. I like making stopmotion movies (claymation, Wallace and Gromit, Nightmare Before X-mas) and I was wondering if there is some way to take a quick-shot with the iSight camera.
I know that there are alot of applicatios such as iStopmotion out there that allows me to do this, but all I really need is a way to take just a picture, it can be saved as a jpeg or a png or anything, doesnt matter. And to pay 50-100$ for an application that just takes pictures seems quite alot. I might as well use a normal camera and take real pictures. But the thing is that its hard to make it stand still then, so I really want to be able to control the camera from my computer. I can do this with Photobooth but that kind of ***** since you have to wait for 3 seconds and then a flash goes off.
I mean, with QuickTime Pro (or iMovie) you can easily shoot a video with a plugged in DV-cam, so why should it be so hard to take just a picture?
Do any of you know of some way to just take a quick pictures with the iSight? It would also be great if it worked with a Quicktime compatible DV-camera too. And preferebly it should be free.
Thanks in advance. I don't really know if this is the right place to post this is though...Hello, Petter
...Photobooth ... you have to wait for 3 seconds and then a flash goes off.
See beancurd's post http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5695879#5695879 :
"hold shift to disable flash, hold option to disable countdown, combine for both."
Do any of you know of some way to just take a quick pictures with the iSight?
(0) Here are some ways of varying convenience using the apps that came with your Mac and/or Leopard:
• Mac OS X 10.5 Help: About Photo Booth
• Mac OS X 10.5 Help: Shortcuts for taking pictures of the screen
(When your camera's image is visible on the display.)
• iChat 4.0 Help: Taking a snapshot of a video chat
• iMovie 6.0 Help: Capturing a still image from your video
(1) For other apps, see the Snapshot Apps and Webcam Apps in
Some Applications You Can Use With iSight
For any of the above methods, you can use Preview > Tools > Flip Horizontal or image editor software (like PhotoShop) to reverse "mirror-image" images that you have made.

hi! probably a dumb question but i really am no techie and i tried to look for it in the tutorials but i couldn't find it.
i'd like to record a simple video blog on imovie hd using my built in isight. how do i go about doing this? i have no idea where to click :SDo you have iChat AV on your computer?
Taken from iMovie Help:
"Capturing live video from an iSight camera
You can capture live video from your iSight camera directly into iMovie HD.
IMPORTANT: To use iSight with iMovie HD, you must have iChat AV on your computer. If you can't use iChat AV, then you can't use IIDC cameras such as iSight with iMovie HD.
To capture live video from an iSight camera:
Open the privacy shutter on your iSight.
Click the mode switch to set iMovie HD to camera mode (shown above).
Click the camera icon to the left of the mode switch and choose iSight from the pop-up menu.
Click the Record With iSight button at the bottom of the iMovie monitor.
The video you see in the iMovie monitor is recorded as a clip in the Clips pane.
Click Record With iSight again to stop recording.
You can record video as long as you have enough disk space to hold it."
I also noticed that you are not at 10.4.9, that may have something to do with it.

Camera won't communicate with FCP or Imovie
I apologise if this has been asked a million times before, but I'm on a very tight time crunch, and I think each case is different.
I'm making a montage/video to be shown at a friend's wedding on thursday, and I can't get the freakin camera to communicate with FCP!
I also tried Imovie, and the only thing it recognizes is the built in Isight camera.
I'm running:
OSX 10.4.9
FCP 5.1.9
QuickT 7.1.5
and the camera's a small sony consumer cam (DCR0PC101E PAL)
I've got all my settings right, i've done this before a million times, but for some reason, something is off today.
I haven't used this particular camera on this computer before, I used to use it on my old powerbook (i don't know if it matters, but I'm wondering if this is an intel issue)
Is there a way to check if the computer itself can read my camera... Like if I go to system profiler, should I look under firewire and find the name of my camera or?
Any help you can send my way is deeply appreciated. From time to time similiar questions pop up here. But, most indicate everything works just fine in iMovie but not FCP. Since iMovie also does not recognize the camcorder, you might have any number of problems.
Do you have access to another camcorder? If another camcorder works just fine with FCP or iMovie, that would narrow your troubleshooting to the DCR0PC101E.
If another camcorder doesn't work, it could be the firewire cable. I'm guessing the cable to the external drive is a 6/6 and the camera cable is a 4/6, so you might also need to try a different cable. -
Record with iSight gets me a 00:00 clip
I have connected my iSight with my iMovie and can get it to record, but then after a few seconds when I click "Record with iSight" again to stop recording, the clip shows as 00:00.
I don't know much about iMovie yet, but it seems like if it worked there would be an actual clip length displayed.
Please help if you can! Thanks.

Well I have a digital camera that records movies with sound, but when I try to import them into iMovie they end up with no sound. The help manual says that MPEGs wont work with sound in iMovie. So I was wondering, is there anyway to convert my MPEG movies into somthing iMovie compatible for sound like a .mov or DV. I've tried many products but they all seem to convert the video and leave the sound out just like iMovie does? Please help me.
