Help recovering music after harddrive crash

I've purchased and downloaded 15 albums from the Itunes Store. Unfortunately, my laptop had a defect and decided to crash on me, so now I've got a new harddrive, with none of my purchased music on it.
How can I redownload those 15 albums that I've purchased from Itunes?

I think that analogy is flawed, to be honest.
When I buy a CD from the store, it is tangible. I remove the plastic covering, I open the case, and take the CD out. That's not the case here, where the album is purchased online, electronically, and stored on my harddrive (until I make a backup, that is, which I obviously didn't do). So it's not like some factory is producing a replacement compact disc and jewel case, and mailing it to me if I lose my first one. It's just bits of code in Apple's central database. I wouldn't think royalties would have to be paid out, if it could be proven that the same person who made the original purchase was just downloading the music again. That's why I 'guess I was always under the impression..'. The wrong impression, obviously. There's my 2 cents.
So anyways, I'm pretty peachy keen that I got away with it this time, and have learned from my mistake (make backups!!). Thanks again.

I bought my iPod 30G when it first came out back in the day. With the protective case it looks like a Walkman, if you know what that is. The new ones are half the thickness of my old skool one. lol!
Anyway, years ago I accidently uploaded a virus in both my PC and laptop. Yeah, real *******. Well, the person who restored my computers couldn't save my music. I still have the iPod but my library on iTunes is gone. If I try to update my iPod in either computer it will erase every song I have on it and only upload the songs/album I'm trying to add. I'm told that this is something Apple did to prevent file sharing, blah, blah, blah...
Does anyone know a way around it? I keep buying CDs just not able to load them into my iPod thru iTunes.

    Hello yourantihero,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • Recovering songs after laptop crash

My laptop harddrive crashed and had to be replaced. I have all my songs on my ipod "original" but they won't synch w/ itunes. I have autorized the computer with itunes store but it just does not synch back into Itunes library.. I hate to have to import all my personal cd's again. HELP!
    Thanks

The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
If you prefer something more automated there are also a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. I use Senuti but check the others out and choose whichever you are happy with.

  • Help Please! My Harddrive crashed and Final Cut wont start!

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I was wondering if somebody could give me some advice on what to do if one's Harddrive crashed, was deconnected from the Computer and now Final cut Express HD asks me to reset volumes when I start the programme? If I do so would I loose any data on my new External Harddrives?
One of my Hard drives crashed last week when I was trying to burn a movie on DVD and I have a new one now, Final cut used to use two of my Hard Drives, one of which is still working- but it wasn't used as a source anymore when I crashed last week, since it was full...would my new Hard Drive and the old Hard Drive be affected by this command?
I know it is a bit complicated, but Thank you very much for your help!

Thank you very much for your reply...
The problem was the following, my PowerBook has a 60 GB capacity for saving things (please excuse my terminology)...that wasn't enough so I connected external harddrives to save my media files and movies etc etc. The hard drive that contained my media files is fine, but the one with the edited version of the movies crashed and deleted everything. So I got a new harddrive and started over...got no message, imported the media files into a new project and edited again, but this new harddrive crashed again and deleted everything too. So I wanted to start over once again with a new harddrive today and connected both the new harddrive and the one with the media files to the Powerbook, but suddenly when starting Final Cut Express, this message appeared:
In order not to loose any data this path is neccessary: ''The name of my deleted harddrive that isn't connected to the computer''- missing and I have three options: Quit, Retry or Reset Volumes
Now I should maybe specify that while I was editing the last time, I frequently got the message that my memory was full and I should choose a different hard drive for FCE to do the automatic saving on, so I selected my larger new hard drive(the 2nd one that crashed) as opposed to the selected one from before with my media files on it, which had reached the end of its capacity (in 'Settings' or 'PreSettings').
Now my worry is that something will be reset on my old and new new hard drive that I don't want to be reset, but I cant edit my movie if I don't find a solution to this...I'm so sorry about this being very confusing probably...but Thank you very much in advance for your help!

  • I need to re-download my music after a crash, but I can't seem to find the button to let me do that. Help!

Had my harddisk changed because the one that came with my Mac gave up. This was covered by the warranty.
I now have none of my music in iTunes - How can i re-download it?

If you are a resident of the U.S. and have iTunes 10.3 or later you can re download your music for free.
Click Purchased under Quick Links right side of the iTunes Store window.
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
You may need to re authorize the computer. From the iTunes menu bar click Store / Authorize This Computer.
If you aren't a resident of the U.S., and you don't have a backup of your iTunes purchases, you will have to buy the media again. Here's how to back that up >   How to back up your media in iTunes

  • What is procedure to recover music after ipod hardware failure

My uncle's ipod had a hardware failure and died. Apple genius bar gave him an estimate for repair. But he has not repaired it yet. At that time, his music was still playable within iTunes. Then my uncle's tried to transfer music library to his daughter's PC. I do not know exactly what he did but, itunes produced a file called library.XML containing a list of his music titles along with the file paths to each item. At this point, all his music is not playable on his PC nor his daughers's PC. What was can be done with the Library.xml file? What is the purpose of library.xml. After iTunes generates library.xml, what should be done with it? My uncle wants to recover is music library. What should he do? Please help. Thank you.

On the main Apple Discussions page, select MacBook Pro under Computing Hardware. There you'll find 12 individual forums each with a name and description, e.g.

  • Recovering files after computer crash

My HP computer recently crashed and eventually I had to reinstall XP and consequently lost all of my files. Is there any way for me to recover my iTunes library (I had 100's of files...)? I did not backup my music as I had no external drive or anything similar to put them on. Also, I only have a shuffle so that would only let me recover ~200 songs from there. Is there any hope for me? Any programs or iTunes options that anyone is aware of? I'm pretty desperate as that was 100's of dollars.... thanks in advance for any help.

I wrote some programs that will probably help:
This one removes the tracks that iTunes cannot find:

This one removes the duplicates (if they are exactly the same file, or one that is like "foofile.mp3", and "foofile 1.mp3")

  • Re-Installing my lost music after hardrive crash

This is the issue. I spoke with an apple representative at the store today. I lost all my music from my itunes library due to my computer crashing, and I did not back up any of it. I bought a new MacBook today as well. They told me there was a chat session in Itunes support to speak to someone about getting all my music back, and they said that I would be granted the request one time to have all my music given back to me. However I can not see where or how I can speak "chat" to an Itunes rep. If anyone can help, it would be great. Thanks.

You can e-mail itunes support, but they are under no obligation to allow you to re-download. It may be worth a try if you do not have the music on an ipod.
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes
Click the appropriate category until you see the "e-mail us" button on the right.
If you have the music on an ipod, then you can transfer from there:

    Hello Boogiec522,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like you would like to download your iTunes Store purchases again to your desktop computer.
No worries there, you can re download them free of charge from the iTunes Store with this article:

You can view all of your past purchases, or just the ones not currently in your iTunes library. Items already in your library aren’t available for download. If you select Music, you can view your purchases by song, artist, or album. If you’re viewing by album, click an album to see which songs on it are available for downloading. To search for an item, type its name or a keyword in the search field, and then press the Return key to view your search results.

    hi,
    Thank you Raju.
I regret to inform u that yr reply came in a bit late & I had already solved my problem, I am posting my experience for the benifit of others.
I tried out a number of things today.
    One thing clicked
I Installed the oracle server on another machine with the same name.Keep in mind that the drive name should be the same as the previous installation & so must be the DB name & the path as that of the previous installation.
After doing so shut down the oracle instance.
Replace all the control, log and dbf files.
Try to restart the oracle Instance if there is a problem, it might give u a password mis-match error. If u using another login to boot up .
To corect this run the orapwd.exe with the new password & the replace the PWD<databasename>.ora file
try to restart the databse after taking a shutdown .
    This procedure works well.

  • Can't reimport some music after computer crash

I am unable to re-import some of my music following a computer crash.  One or 2 albums won't import because it says is can only import unprotected wma files.  The album that I am trying to re-import that is giving me the error WAS PURCHASED FROM THE ITUNES STORE several years ago!!!!!  I have had several computer crashes over the years, and I have all my music backed up, but every time I reload Itunes and re-import my music, I lose a few albums or songs.  Please let me know how I can re-import that music that is legally mine!!!  thanks!

Try double clicking on them in iTunes and see what happens. If I'm not mistaken, a dialog box hould pop up saying that the songs are not authorized for the computer or something along those lines. You will need to go to the iTunes account area and log in (you may have this option in the dialog box that may pop up). I'm sorry, it's been awhile since I needed to authorize a computer for my songs.

  • Recovering music after hard drive failure

I had my music stored on an external drive which was set as the default location for my music using iTunes. The drive failed. When I open iTunes, everything looks exactly as it always has but if I try to play any music the program can't find the files which no longer exist. I've read about programs like Senuti, iPodRip, and PodWorks which claim to be able to transfer music from an iPod to iTunes. Before I jump in and try one, does anybody here know the following (assume Senuti unless you strongly recommend a different program):
    1. Can one of these programs transfer my entire library (about 6000 songs by 255 artists) automatically or will I have to do it all manually?
    2. Is it possible to keep the existing organization (by album, by artist, with associated album art, etc) when transferring to iTunes from my iPod?
    3. I do seem to have a small iTunes library with some iTunes music on my internal drive. Should I erase that before transferring from the iPod?
Has anybody done this sort of thing successfully? Any tips, hints, suggestions or advise? I'm using a MBP (older, Core Duo) running OS 10.6.4, with iTunes 9.2.1 and a 3rd generation, 40gig iPod.
    Thanks.

You can use any of the programs that you listed to transfer. The transfer will be automatic once you tell the program what to do.
iTunes will sort by the default of Artist>Album>Song.
If you have an iTunes library already on the internal you can just add the stuff from the iPod to that library. No reason to erase the internal before starting. You do need to have a library to transfer into.
I think that the main idea is to get the music back to your Mac and off the iPod.

  • Recovering Music After Wiping The Hard-Drive

I just recently had to do a full system restore on my comp. All the songs I had bought from itunes was deleted in the process. I can access my purchase history though itunes and was wondering if there was anyway to get them back.

This is why it is basic to maintain a backup.
Use your backup to put them back on.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup (terrible idea), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:
