Help regarding a macbook 2gb RAM HELP!
hey guys, i am 15 and i am really getting interested in graphic design and video editing (aka photoshop and imovie). I have used PC's all my life but i think it is finally time to jump to the real deal, a Mac. Specifically a MacBook. Now my question is, is this a good deal or no on 2gb of RAM on ebay.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/2GB-DDR2-OPTIVAL-RAM-MEMORY-APPLE-MACBOOK-13-SPECIAL_W0QQitem Z180012522054QQihZ008QQcategoryZ80037QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
^^^(copy and paste whole thing)
so is this a good piece of RAM or is it junk?
also, will this fit in a MacBook and/or should i buy a different brand? if so, from where?
thanks alot for any help.
Chris
I wouldn't take the risk of buying RAM from an eBay vendor. You ask a very relevant question -- "is this a good piece of RAM or is it junk?" -- and with a no-name vendor, nobody is likely to be able to tell you.
Many people can answer that question for a whole bunch of known, reputable vendors.
Some good choices in the US include OtherWorld Computing and Small Dog Electronics; scan the discussions on this forum for many, many others.
Macs can be touchy about RAM, and the few dollars you might save buying from an eBay vendor simply aren't worth the risk.
Buy from a reputable, known vendor who will stand behind their product and offer a warranty.

MacBook 2GB RAM concern. Anyone had problems?!!
I have just recently bought a MacBook and upgraded the RAM to 2GB. I have noticed that (I know that this is supposed to happen) that after the computer has been running a while, my Inactive memory is usually 1.25GB and free is 25MB, but my computer also seems to bog down bad after this happens. This also happens when I have run BitTorrent for a while. Could it be something that BotTorrent is doing, like the computer is caching everything I download. Or is the memory too HIGH? HELP!
If you think your memory is being used up look at the page in, page outs for the hard disk. OSX will use the hard disk when all the memory is in use. However, inactive memory is memory that is not being used and if OSx needs more memory it will grab it from the inactive portion. I don't use any Bit torrent apps so could not tell you if that will slow you down. I have 2gb and don't notice any slowdown or page outs unless I'm running a lot of programs and burning/ripping a dvd at the same time.

Adding more than 2Gb RAM to MacBook Pro
Do you guys know of any way to put more than 2Gb RAM in an Intel 17" MacBook Pro?
Model Name: MacBook Pro 17"
Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,2
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B03
SMC Version: 1.5f10
I bought this when the 17" models first came out, and have been disappointed in it ever since (I broke my rule of NOT buying the first generation of something). As time has passed, the main problem is the 2Gb limit for RAM. That's NOWHERE near enough, and shame on Apple for that limitation. If there were some way, even a non-standard way, of adding more RAM, I could get reasonable performance from this computer. As it is, this has been a wasted $3600 investment. whew!
Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks! Feel free to email bruce at dbsdesigngroup.comThat's possible...actually likely. I'd love for that to be the case because I could fix it. ::Grin:: It's been this way since I first got it. When it arrived with just 1 Gb RAM, it was virtually unusable. I have a few apps as startup items, but they're just Firefox, Entourage, iNotepad, Linotype Font Explorer (with very few fonts activated), and Stickies. That shouldn't affect things much.
My needs are to use Photoshop, Illustrator and GoLive at the same time, with MSWord, Firefox and Entourage open as well. After the first bit of usage, I end up with 4-6 pageouts and a VERY slow computer. While it's doing the pageouts (which take quite a while), or switching between apps, it's very slow. And it's also extremly slow when Spotlight is indexing, so I disabled that.
I'm just not sure what it might be...nothing in Activity Monitor seems like it would be a culprit. Even in Safe Mode the problem is very evident.
I'll keep exploring and hopefully find something that will make this machine more viable for my use. I really appreciate the input greatly. -

843 MB Page-outs1. EtreCheck indicates that you do not have Time Machine configured.
This step WILL NOT SPEED UP YOUR SYSTEM, but you need to have at least one backup method for your system. Is your system being backed up at work or at school? Without at least one backup method, you're constantly in danger that a sudden hard drive failure will cause you to lose everything. If you do not have some kind of current backup (school, work, or on your own using Time Machine, Carbon Copy Cloner, or other backup program to an external hard drive, then please don't attempt anything until you get one and have at least one or more complete clones or several Time Machine backups of your system.
2.CleanMyMac2 is NOT helpful software. If anything it makes your system much more unstable and slower than it was before:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5061639?tstart=0
Follow the developers instructions to remove it: http://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/how-to-uninstall-cleanmymac-2 Simply dragging the app to the trash does NOT remove it. Carefully removing CleanMyMac2 might restore SOME of the performance you seek.
3. You have just 2GB RAM memory. That's not enough for good performance with OS X Mavericks. This is illustrated by the 843MB of 'Page-outs' shown in your EtreCheck. That means that the computer is writing the contents of active RAM memory to the hard drive.
Virtual Memory Information:
120 MB Free RAM
535 MB Active RAM
511 MB Inactive RAM
340 MB Wired RAM
2.88 GB Page-ins
843 MB Page-outs
2GB RAM was was OK (though not great) to run OS X 10.6, but OS X Mavericks 10.9 really needs at least 4GB RAM, and 8GB RAM would offer somewhat better performance that 4GB.
Macintosh computers are notoriously 'picky' about RAM memory specifications. OtherWorldComputing (www.macsales.com) and crucial.com are two trustworthy vendors of RAM memory that works reliably in Macintosh computers.
Though not indicated by the EtreCheck report, one additional possibility is that your hard drive could be in the early stages of failure. That would also slow things down, and is yet another reason to be certain you have backups of your irreplacable files.

I have a macbook with 1 gb ram, 2 rams with 512 mb. I am planning to replace one with 2gb ram. Do I need to reinstall OS if I replace one of them? Please help. Thanks.
If you want to upgrade your RAM it;s very easy on most MacBooks with the removable battery. We'll need to know the model to further advise you. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.

Native hdv editing on macbook pro 2,33GHz and 2GB RAM
Hi,
I intend to start editing native hdv on my portable mac. It has a 15,4" monitor, ati mobility radeon X1600 256MB graphics card, 160GB 5400rpm hard disk and a FW800 port. The output will either be hdv to tape or DVD. Can you tell me if it will be a stable configuration?
What about the preview on my monitor - will it be hdv 1440 x 900 resolution? What will be the impact on the color correction process? And about the disk - is 5400 rpm enough or should I try to change it to 100GB 7200rpm or maybe store it all on a FW ext disk? Is it true that if you capture to your hard disk and then transfer it to a FW ext disk the chances of having dropped frames are much less?
I'm just upgrading now to HDV filming and editing so I have all these basic questions and doubts. I hope you understand and help me out. Thanks.
MacBook Pro 2,33GHz Mac OS X (10.4.7) 2GB RAMIt's not good to use your internal drive to run OS X and import footage. Here is some information from Final Cut Pro's manual.
If you need to fit a lot of media files on a relatively small hard disk, such as a
PowerBook (or Macbook Pro) hard disk, you can recompress all your media files. This is the phase of the offline/online workflow when you create the low-resolution, offline quality media files for rough editing.
Format______________________ Format Typical data rate
OfflineRT (using Photo JPEG)__ Varies between 300-500 KB/sec.
DV (25)_______________________3.6 MB/sec.
HDV (1080i)__________________3.6 MB/sec.
Your internal drive should be fine for OfflineRT editing as the format uses much less data rate, so your drive can run the OS and Final Cut Pro at the same time.
The manual tells you how to use the OfflineRT format. It's quite cool!

Hello, I need help with my macbook pro.
It looks like I cannot install anything anymore. Everytime I try to install a new software, I simply get stuck during the installation type process. I put in my password, it does accept it, but it does not go any further.
I tried to reset the password, put no password, repair the permissions, the disk but nothing will do. I nearly got stuck with the log in screen but finally succeeded in disabling it.
So I thought I might try to create a new account but I cannot click the lock to make changes. It simply refuses to react.
I am now thinking about using the migration assistant to save all my settings, data and so fourth, but again I get stuck when I have to type in my password. It accepts it but nothing happens...
I guess it has something to do with the authorization process, but can't find anything on the internet about it... Can you help me out?
I am running Lion 10.7.3.
Regards,
Nicolas.
(I apologize if any grammatical/structural mistakes were to be found, english is not my mother-tongue. )You probably won't like this suggestion, but I suggest you reinstall Lion.
First, backup your system. Next, reboot your system, press/hold the COMMAND-R keys to boot into the Recovery HD. Select 'Reinstall Mac OS X'. If you purchased Lion as an upgrade to Snow Leopard, the reinstall process will install Lion 10.7.3. If your system came preinstalled with Lion, you might still get Lion 10.7.2. Both installs are a total install of the OS. None of your apps or data will be impacted. Just the OS. -

Actually you were on the right track, i think you just have to increase PSAPTEMP a bit and you will be fine. 358 MB seems just too small, i suggest you increase it to at least 2GB.
1. what will be the difference in use of PSAPUNDO and PSAPTEMP while copy is running. ( i.e. what will be entered in PSAPUNDO and what will be filled in PSAPTEMP.)
PSAPTEMP: is needed for large sort operations, as mentioned when you have a select with an ORDER BY clause, or if you do join two tables. During the client copy some sorting might be needed for special tables (cluster tables) where data is stored sorted.
PSAPUNDO: undo space is only needed for DML (data manipulation), if data is changed undo is generated. This obviously is heavily the case during a client copy.
2. the target client already has a copy taken 1 month before. so I think while importing it first delete existing data and then copies the new one.
So If I first delete the target client and then take import on it; will it have advantage in regards of getiing UNDO or TEMP segments getting filled ?
Deleting the client first might help for the undo problem, but you already solved that. I cannot imagine, it will help for the PSAPTEMP issue. As i said i would just increase PSAPTEMP and restart the copy.
One more add: if you are doing the client copy with parallel processes, this will influence your requirements on temp and undo space, because of the concurrently running processes.
Best regards

The Hardware Test detected a RAM problem. Take out the chips and make certain that the connections are clean and reinstall them. Make certain that they are well seated.
If the problem occurs again, test with one chip at a time. Also swap bays if necessary.
Please indicate if you have installed new RAM and if so what brand and the specifications.

Mavericks uses upp all my ram help ?
I have 8 GB of ram installed and mavericks seems to use it all up. The memory cache as per activity monitor seems to keep all the data in it until all RAM is used up and then makes free space. I know restarting my MacBook Pro would clear the memory, but I would like to know if there is an alternative? Can anyone please help. I know my RAM is good and my the hard drive I have installed is an SSD. So this problem is really crippling the potential of my system. Thanks in advance for your help ..
Maybe we need to see what you have on your system as there is nothing about the way Mavericks is handling your RAM. This is the way OS X's RAM allocation works now.
OS X Mavericks will use all of the available RAM and dole out that available RAM to other applications, as needed.
Maybe your issues are elsewhere.
It would help us to help you if we could have some more technical info about your iMac.
If you so choose, please download, install and run Etrecheck.
Etrecheck was developed as a simple Mac diagnostic tool by a regular Apple Support forum user and technical support contributor named Etresoft.
Etrecheck is a small, unobstrusive app that compiles a static snapshot of your entire Mac hardware system and installed software.
This is a free app that has been honestly created to provided help in diagnosing issues with Macs running the new OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
It is not malware and can be safely downloaded and installed onto your Mac.

Copy/paste and post its report here in another reply thread so that we have a complete profile of your Mac's hardware and installed software so we can all help continue trying to help and solve your Mac performance issues. -
Need help buying 15inch Macbook
I am an industrial design student and need help configuring a macbook pro. Should I go for the 2.3Ghz model or the 2.6 one? I prefer the 2.3 Ghz one as it is cheaper. Should I get an extra 4gb ram? I do not play games, will be mainly using sofware such as solidworks and indesign on it. I am not considering the retina display models. Also, should I pay $100 to get an antiglare screen? I do have poor eyesight and think this would be a good option.
Thanksmatthew --
You'll get a lot of advice here, but I feel the most important point when working with InDesign, is to get as much RAM as you can afford. I have the non-glare MBP, and I also have the regular screen iMac. I like them both. I think you should think about where you will be working the most, and how much light will be there. -
hello please help me my MacBook Pro screen when desktop switching fingers pressing 3 distorts a bit, with him?
First, remove Comodo. You don't need it, and it sounds like it is causing a problem.
The other symptoms sound like you have adware installed. Comodo might have detected some components of that adware, or it might not have, but whatever the case, you should NEVER allow any anti-virus software to quarantine or delete files from your computer. See: How to remove infected files.
Regarding the adware, see my Adware Removal Guide.

Please help...Macbook won't start up!
All,
I need help with my Macbook because it won't turn on. A few nights ago it was shut down, but before completely turning off it stuck on a grey/white screen. The keys were unresponsive and only gave the "bell" sound when pressed. I turned it off by keeping the power button depressed.
Upon trying to switch it on last night, it loads up withthe apple symbol and the pinwheel but then goes to a grey screen reading "You need to restart your machine. Press and hold the power button or press the reset button". I tried resetting the PRAM and NVRAM which did nothing.
I don't know much about Mac's but I am able to start it in safe mode, but what comes up doesn't mean a lot to me. it then stops and stalls whilst still with the black screen and white writing...?
Will I have to start with the disk utility etc?
Please, all advice will be very helpful!
ThanksHi
The "You need to restart your computer" message indicates a kernel panic, which often points to a hardware fault (often a RAM fault).
Can you reboot the computer from the original installation disk? (Start the computer, insert the disk, force-reboot it again, hold down the C key. If that doesn't work, reboot and hold down the Option key, and then choose the DVD as a startup source. If it loads to the installation screen, try running DIsk Utility from the Utilities menu - run Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. Let us know if you see any errors (from the Repair Disk routine).
Have you upgraded the RAM at all? If so, try removing the new RAM and leaving (or replacing with) the old RAM.
Is your Macbook still under warranty?
Do you have backups of your files?

Help! My MacBook is all of a sudden not working past the login page. A white screen comes up that I cannot get rid of. I attempted a safe start up and that failed as well. It's a white screen where I have a mouse and when I click the volume buttons I can hear it working but nothing else just white. Please help.
Something you can try is resetting it all Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings. Or go to Settings > Store & sign out & log back in. Another thing you can do is restore your ipod. This has happened to me but the only thing i did was that i created a new account but try doing the things above i just told you. :)
