Help reinstalling OS X

I have an old 400mhz G3 iMac and i have previously had ubuntu linux on it. Thats srewed up now so i want to reinstall tiger. But since its on a dvd i restored it on my ipod, but now im stuck im sure how to boot it via the usb port, if someone could help that would be awsome. I had my panthers cds lying around but i have lost them now so im really angry but please help!

This is interesting information since you obviously achieved what technically is impossible (on PPC-based computers - USB-booting IS possible on Intel-based Macs): Don't start up from an external USB device

It sounds like your hard drive either has a software problem that Disk Utility cannot fix or that the HD has failed (mechanically).
Your Mac may have booted either to your recovery partition or to internet recovery in an attempt to repair the drive- I can't tell from your post.
I'll assume that it was the recovery partition.
Try to boot into internet recovery (hold down option command R at restart), and see if you can repair your HD with Disk Utility. You should also repair permissions while you're there.
If that doesn't work, try to boot into single user mode (restart, hold down ⌘S until you see a black screen with white text) and repair your hard drive. Here's a reference with directions: Repair Your Hard Disk in Single User Mode | Everything Macintosh
If that doesn't work you have a few options:
If your mac originally came with installation disks, you can try to boot from the installation disk and then see if you can repair the HD.
There is a small chance that Techtool Pro 7 will be able to repair your HD if Disk Utility can't.
If none of that works then your HD has probably failed and will need to be replaced, which is not too difficult to do yourself if you can use a screwdriver.

Hey guys, I'm new to mac so I need a little help.
I did something last night to my comp and I'm not sure what it was. But when I click on the iChat icon it just comes up with a ? I search in spotlight and it's not there. I must have deleted it while getting rid of some other things. I don't have time machine and I need some help reinstalling. When I bought the mac it had Tiger and I still have those disc, but right now I have upgraded to Leopard. Where can I find iChat to reinstall? I looked on the iLife section of the Tiger discs but I couldn't find it. Any info will help.

I downloaded pacifist and got ichat to reinstall from my Tiger 10.4.9 disc, however, now when I try to open iChat it says, You cannot use the application “iChat” with this version of Mac OS X. I have leopard 10.5.2. Does anyone know how to update the version I have? I use the mac updater but it doesn't find anything.

Did you De-Activate the originally installed version, if CS, or later?

How do I get help reinstalling my Adobe creative suite 6 after IMAC IOS 10.8 crashed? Apple had to reinstall operating system and all programs & data were lost. Adobe System say serial number valid, but qualifying product can not be found on this computer.

When you're installing Adobe upgrades, there are two ways of doing it:
Have an existing, qualifying version already installed. Install the upgrade and enter your upgrade serial number. The installer will detect the earlier qualifying version already installed and the upgrade will finish installing. That is not your scenario.
The second option (and easiest on new computers with no Adobe software previously installed) is to simply install the latest version (usually an upgrade) and enter your upgrade serial number. That's what you've done so far.
The installer will look for an earlier version already installed on your computer. If it cannot find one, it will prompt you to enter the serial number from an earlier version. Once you enter the earlier qualifying version serial number, the upgrade installer will complete the installation. If you cannot find an earlier version serial number then the upgrade will not be licensed and will go into trial mode. From there you can use it for 30 days until it will no longer launch.

Actually, you can and have downloaded from there, because that message only happens when the download is finished.
The message is entirely normal, and is Apple's way of encouraging the world to use the Mac App Store. That doesn't help you because Acrobat isn't in the Mac App Store - it isn't allowed there.
So, what to do? Change your system settings
Please follow the steps given below to resolve this issue -
System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General > Allow applications downloaded from > Anywhere

Need help reinstalling Windows 7 home premium on HP G62-435DX

My internal hard disk crashed and I followed advice from this forum to use Ubuntu (using live disc from CD ROM drive) to recover data and save to external hard drive. Next, I replaced the internal hard drive with a 500GB internal hard drive. I figured out how to partition the new internal hard drive and get Ubuntu to acknowledge it.
Now, I'm trying to figure out how to reinstall my Windows 7 Home Premium operating system so I can try to get back to normal. However, I cannot figure out how to download Windows 7 to my hard drive using my product key that came with my machine when I bought it. All the download options appear to require you to buy/request Windows 7 recovery discs to run and install on the machine (since I didn't create these prior to my hard disk failing).
Is this really the only way I can use my product key to reinstall Windows 7 to my machine? Also, I cannot figure out how to download the OS from Windows 7 ISO downloads (via Digital River) to my internal hard drive - seems I can only do this by downloading and burning to CDs (which I don't believe I have the right kind - but obviously am happy to buy if it's the best/fastest option). It seems I have very limited options since I had to remove my internal hard drive, which then eliminated Windows 7 from my machine.
Based on these details - I ultimately want to determine the fastest, most efficient way to get Windows 7 OS back on my machine. I'd prefer to download it, but am hamstrung by having to run Ubuntu from a Live CD. Thanks for your help!

I have an early MacBook Pro and I have to reinstall Yosemite because I've been getting nothing but spinning beach balls, slow loading, lag in type showing up, and wi-fi issues. I took the laptop to the Genius Bar at the Apple store last week and they ran diagnostics on everything and all was perfectly OK. No hardware issues, no memory issue and he said my laptop was very clean. He saw the spinning beach ball many times while he was working on my laptop and suggested that I turn off File Vault as that could be causing the slowdown. He said if that didn't work (it didn't) to buy an external hard drive (which I received today) and to back up everything through Time Machine then reinstall Yosemite. I specifically bought an external HD that says "for Mac" and as soon as I connected it Time Machine opened and did the backup.
Now these are my questions. Are all my photos on iPhoto, and my Word for Mac documents backed up so that when I reinstall Yosemite, everything is going to be right where I left it? Will I lose Word for Mac and have to reinstall it? Isn't Word for Mac a one time use/install and will I have trouble and have to call Microsoft to input my authentication key in again and will they let me? I know silly questions but I'm really worried about losing stuff.
Also step-by-step detailed instruction on how to reinstall Yosemite would really be appreciated. Thank you!

If you have taken the backup using the Time machine then there is nothing to worry as all your photos from iPhotos and Word for mac documents are backup safely by your time machine.
Only keep one thing in mind that the external HDD which you use for the time machine backup should have the capacity size of about 3-4 times that of your backup data size. Or else, the time machine external drive will start deleting the files if the external drive is about to be full.

You absolutely don’t have to reinstall the Word for mac if its install in the first place because Time machine will backup the system installed files of your MS Word which you had installed.
Word for mac is a one time install and you don’t have to call Microsoft for any authentication key after you have restored your Word backup files from the time machine drive. As I said before the time machine will backup your Word system installed files leaving you no chance to reinstall it again.

Here, Yosemite reinstall procedure......
Important: To reinstall OS X, you must be connected to the Internet. Make sure your power adapter is plugged in. Reinstall OS X using the built-in recovery disk.
In the menu bar, choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command and R keys.
Select Disk Utility, then click Continue.
Select your startup disk on the left, then click the Erase tab.
Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format menu, enter a name, then click Erase.
Important: Erasing the disk removes all the information from the disk. Be sure to back up the information you want to keep to an external device.
After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
Select Reinstall OS X, click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.

I had to reinstall Photoshop Elements 11 after my MacBook had to be wiped.
I chatted for help earlier was told to let the software download...got the link and watched it bounce into my Downloads....I just got home and not sure what to do next. There was not anything up prompting what to do next? Serial #? etc....
I saw there is suppose to be another program to help with installing? but this is a reinstall? HELP?

Are you trying to download from prodesigntools? If so Access denied means you are not following their instructions EXACTLY. Try downloading from http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/photoshop-elements-10-11-downloads.html.

I used this process on 4/20/2014. Is there a service person to help reinstall trial 8.1 crash?

I need help to reinstall PS trial on PC computer running Windows 8.1. PS installed 4/17, ran in in degraded mode until it crashed 4/19. Recovery back to 4/16 did not include PS trial. I want to use this trial to know if it even runs on Windows 8.1.

Ok....I have trashed iPhoto and all associated files and re-installed, run disk utility and repaired permissions as well as repaired permissions from within iPhoto. Have rebuilt, library and database from within iphoto. I have tried to create a new library from within iPhoto and iPhoto Library Manager but the result is always the same...iPhoto crashes without getting past the black window. I have also created a new user and new library and iPhoto still crashes on start up.
The only thing I haven't tried is going into Time Capsule and retrieving an older copy of iPhoto and the library associated with it BEFORE upgrade to 9.2 and 9.2.1to see if that works. Any further suggestions woukd be very much appreciated. Thank you, Penny

Please help! My computer crashed and now I am trying to reistall my CS3 software. I'm receiving Unable to Install errors for all of the programs in the Suite except the Acrobat 8 Professional. Can someone please help me? I cannot afford to upgrade, but need this software to do freelance work. I own the software and serial number but Adobe will not support me as it is an older version.

I downloaded and ran the Creative Suite Cleaner Tool. It showed no files to remove, but still said it was successful. I then tried reinstalling the entire suite. Acrobat 8 Professional was the only program that installed. All other programs gave me a componant failed error. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated?!
