Help Removing Unwanted Services?

I created a Service workflow in Automator and saved it. It's like the "Add to iTunes as a Spoken Track" service that applies to selected text, however I have made a version that is better as it adds the date to the name and add the file to a playlist. I save it and it works great.
I gave it the same name as the original, now I find I have two services of the same name. I can untick them in System Preferences, but the original and many services installed by third party apps seems cannot be deleted as the delete button is inactive at all times.
Is there anyway to delete these services that are no longer and sometimes have never been in use?
Thank you for your help.

I suppose there is no default. In OS X all the Library directories are used, but they always follow a hierarchy which goes like this:
~/Library (the ~ represents /Users/yourname/)
/Library
/Network/Library (not applicable in most cases)
/System/Library
So with everything, be it fonts, screen savers, services, etc., the first location that gets checked is your user’s Library. Then the global/local Library, then the system’s Library. If something is available in 2 or more locations this hierarchy decides from top to bottom which one to use.
Your own Services should go into ~/Library but if you want to use the exact same name as an already existing one you should replace/remove/rename that one.

  • I need urgent help to remove unwanted adware from my iMac. Help!

    I need urgent help to remove unwanted adware from my iMac. I have somehow got green underline in text ads, pop up ads that come in from the sides of the screen and ads that pop up selling similar products all over the page wherever I go. Its getting worse and I have researched and researched to no avail. I am really hestitant to download any software to remove whatever it is that is causing this problem. I have removed and reinstalled chrome. I have cleared Chrome and Safari cookies. Checked extensions, there are none to remove. I need to find an answer on how to get rid of these ads. Help please!

    You installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
    Back up all data.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    Right-click or control-click the line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
    from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
    Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
    /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
    Restart and empty the Trash. Don't try to empty the Trash until you have restarted.
    From the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
    Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
    This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
    You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. It must be said that this failure of oversight is inexcusable and has seriously compromised the value of Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You cannot rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
    *If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
    from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Help removing Distributed Scan Server Service/Role

    Hey,
    I have this Role/Service enabled on one of our DC's that acting as a Printer Management Server, There's always a red X under Mange my Server under Print and Document Services.
    I figured it be a no brainer, and I would just remove it since the red X indicates that the service is down, and we never use it so I don't see why its even installed. However when I goto remove the role, it asks for a reboot and then says it fails and reverts
    the changes, and then reboots and then it auto tries again, and does the loop till the third time and windows noticed that it failed to remove the service and finally go back to normal boot.
    Whats causing this, and what can I do to trouble shoot this issue? I have no idea where to start on this one? I couldn't find anything from googling "remove distributed Scan Server service" just kept bringing up how to install.. hahah
    Thoughts? Thanks

    Kool, Havin to clean up the old systems admins bazar setup is challenging. So Here's my latest findings.
    No related logs under event viewer system logs...
    Can specify domain account when configuring the scan service and can get it to start.
    dism states removing feature then requires reboot, as does using server manager..
    after reboot ... Configuring Windows Features ... 100%
    Failed configuring features, reverting changes...
    ALT + CTRL + Del to log in
    system does a reboot (can't even log in)
    and the process repeats... over n over 3 time stops tryin to configure feature and allows me to log in. Feature disabled and still installed.
    The best thing I found I could do is select preferences beside the services roles, and uncheck the monitor checkbox and that removes the red warning X when the service is stopped. So my only option now is to let it sit and linger in the DC for the rest of
    its life until I build a new DC sometime in the future.
    Thanks for all your help it was worth a shot. I still never found out how to open/look through CBS.log
    Just Note don't ever remove a feature through server manager, and before the restart run the dism remove command... it went into a repeated configure routine, and just got stuck saying configuring of windows feature failed, attempting to retry... which I never
    seen before, and since I didn't have all night for this server to come back, I forced it for a reset, and it went through the normal failure routine and I was able to log in.... scary....

  • Removing unwanted characters..

    Hey guys,
    I'm back for help again. Unfortunately my brain isn't creative enough, so please help! :-)
    Ok, I need to remove unwanted characters from a file...the problem is that the characters look like this:
    in any text editor. I'm using JEdit, and it's ISO-8859-1 encoding. The text was initally from a html file, and i think that most of the html is displayed well as text in JEdit. But these squares, which are bits of info that I don't need, are making it a little trick to do my extraction.
    Ex: the word I want to extract is "trouble". But in the file, it looks like this:
    troble....
    Anyone know how to get rid of all that stuff???
    Thanks in advance.
    ...DJVege...

    you could try to set a filter on the characters you accept. Process each character and only accept those that fall into some ASCII boundary. If you accept ASCII characters that have values between 33-255, most blocks should be eliminated.
    Something like this should help:
    import java.io.*;
    public class Example {
         protected static final int MIN_ASCII = 33;
         protected static final int MAX_ASCII = 255;
         public Example(String file) throws IOException {
              BufferedReader b = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(new FileInputStream(file)));
              PrintStream p = new PrintStream(new FileOutputStream(file+"_fix.txt"));
              String s = "";
              int j;
              while ((s = b.readLine()) != null) {
                   for (j = 0;j < s.length();j++) {
                        if (valid(s.charAt(j))) {
                             p.print(s.charAt(j));
                   p.println();
              b.close();
              p.close();
         protected boolean valid(char c) {
              int asc = (int)c;
              // allow for tabs and spaces
              if (asc == 9 || asc == 32) {
                   return true;
              return (asc >= MIN_ASCII && asc <= MAX_ASCII);
         public static void main(String args[]) {
              if (args.length > 0) {
                   try {
                        new Example(args[0]);
                   catch (IOException e) {
                        e.printStackTrace();
    }useage: java Example <file>
    of course, something like this will probably only work on "english" files as I dont have an understanding on how foreign characters are encoded..
    if this doesnt solve your problem, you might want to adjust the range to 33-127, which will eliminate all "block" characters and all "special formatted" characters (i.e. accented characters, currency signs, etc.)
    see http://asciitable.com/ for more information on ASCII characters

  • Removing unwanted items in photoshop elements 12

    I have looked at a video tutorial for removing unwanted items in a photo and followed the procedure using the spot healing brush trying both content aware & proximity match types but for some reason once I've selected the item the program doesn't actually do anything, so nothing changes. The item is still there exactly as it was before. I also tried using the magnetic lasso & but don't know how to get rid of the item once I've selected it. Can anyone help me with this issue?

    I used the clone stamp tool.
    Place the cursor over the rocks to the left of the sign (source area), then hold down the ALT key and left click. Let go, then place the cursor over the sign and left click.
    You can adjust the size of the cursor with the bracket keys on the keyboard next to the letter P.

  • Removing Bootcamp services???

    Hey,
    I currently have Windows XP Service pack 3 (32bit) and have this problem:
    "Windows was unable to create a required installation folder:
    Error code: 0x80070005"
    I have been told to remove bootcamp services from the previous bootcamp installation. Can somebody please give me help and/or advice as to how I can remove or any other way to sort this out,
    Thanks

    Scratch that erroneous root of the problem. Deleting the entries from HKLM software, microsoft, windows, currrentversion, run, except the modem (which I need for sound when faxing), permits the computer to shutdown with all bootcamp services remaining installed from the CD (version 2.1). msconfig does not fix the issue by merely turning off the startup programs -- I do not know why deleting the registry entries fixes the problem, versus just deselecting them in msconfig, but it does. I previously did this a a few days ago but could not remember what actually fixed the problem -- and upon a reinstallation the problem returned. So for future reference, the registry entries for programs loaded on startup prevents XP pro from shutting down and restarting properly -- one was something to do with bluetooth, one relates to the realtek audio driver, one relates to the apple keyboard, and another one ?

  • I need help removing a malicious program form my mac!

    Hello, I am 99% sure I accidentally acquired/downloaded a malicious program on my mac and I am new to macs and need help removing it!
    I have growl and the other day it notified me that screen sharing, file sharing and web sharing were all turned on at once. As soon as I saw this I quickly got off of the internet and found out how to disable them.
    Also, three programs kept requesting to access the internet and I denied them of course. Their names were: nmbd, netsessionmac1225fd0, and krb5kdc.
    Like I said I am new to macs and need some help fixing this problem. So, if anyone has any ideas that would help a lot.
    I already have screen sharing, file sharing, and web sharing turned off and now it requires a password to access (which i changed after i disabled them) but I want to ask some mac people if I need to do anything else, thanks!

    By the way, a big thank you to everyone who has helped so far..
    Here is the list of my running programs and keep in mind that I do have my firewall turned on as well as file sharing, screen sharing, and web sharing turned off so the suspect program may not be running?

  • What's the best way to removed unwanted files?

    I have an iMac G4 running OS X 10.4.11 with 1GB of DDR SDRAM. I'm wondering what's the best way to remove unwanted files from the RAM, if it's even possible. There are apps and other files I no longer need. If I can dump the unused files will it help the computer run a little faster? Can I eliminate the unwanted files some how by myself or do I need a program that does it? Thanks

    Applications are stored perminately on the harddrive [ Macintosh HD ]. When applications are running that is when they appear in a window, they take up RAM. You see your running applications by using activity monitor:
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor
    Application when they are not running, they do not take up RAM.  You will not see any performance improvement when you delete an application from your Harddrive.  [ unless you have filled up your harddrive ]
    Best to have greater than 2gig of free space on your Harddrive.  Many posters to these forums state that you need much more free space: 5 gig to 10 gig or 10 percent of you hd size.
    Most applications do not take up much space on the Harddrive.  I copy my unused application to a folder named additional applications.

    Be careful when deleting files. A lot of people have trashed their system when deleting things. Place things in trash. Reboot & run your applications. Empty trash.
    Go after large files that you have created & know what they are.  Do not delete small files that are in a folder you do not know what the folder is for. Anything that is less than a megabyte is a small file these days.

    How do you remove unwanted magazines from your newsstand?

    I have the ipod touch 5th generation. I tried to remove the magazine from the newsstand by pressing and holding the magazine until it wiggled but no delete option appeared (that small little "x" in the upper corner). After some rather frustrating searches that revealed nothing I plugged my ipod into my computer via USB and opened itunes. From there i clicked on the ipod button at the top right under the search option which opened the ipod contents. Click on Apps and you can remove magazines from here. Hope this helps!
