Help repairing reader

40% of our support calls deal with reader not working (50% are people forgetting their passwords and email addresses, and the other 10% is pot-luck).
These people have any myriad of problems. Inevitably, we end up upgrading or repairing their adobe reader installation. It is ridiculous to deal with these people, though. Between having to download 30 megs of application, and talking them through the launch and repair process, it takes hours and hours. (IT pros, you KNOW what I'm talking about)
So, I'm looking for a single-click repair technique or small utility to take care of this. Get everything back to normal, register the reader with installed browsers, so they can use reader again.
Any leads?

It's not too bad a job to replace the CD-ROM on a slot-loading model. I really don't see any reason why not. I can tell your from experience (I've disassembled over 75 of these in the past year)that to get to the CD drive you'll have to remove only 16 screws. The issues itself is very common with these models. While your in there you might as well upgrade the hard drive as you'll be removing the caddy that houses the HD & the CD-ROM.

  • Help on Read

    Hi,
    Need some help on read statement.
    I need to read the records which starts with some character and need to specify the same in where condition as below.
    read table i_itab
         into w_itab
         with key objnr = w_itab-objnr
              stat CS 'E'
              Binary search.
    Getting error as should not use CS in the read statement. How to read the records which starts with letter 'E' only in this case.
    Can anyone help me out in this.
    Regards,
    Ram

    You should be able to do a binary search to get the first record and then do indexed reads to get subsequent records.
    Something like:
    DATA tab_index LIKE sy-tabix.
    SORT i_itab BY objnr stat.
    IF sy-subrc = 0.
      tab_index = sy-tabix.
    ENDIF.
    WHILE sy-subrc = 0.
      IF w_itab-stat CS 'E'.
    * process record.
      ENDIF.
      tab_index = tab_index + 1.
    READ TABLE i_itab INDEX tab_index.
      IF sy-subrc = 0.
      IF i_itab-objnr <> w_itab-objnr.
          sy-subrc = 9.
        ENDIF.
      ENDIF.
    ENDWHILE.

    There are several problems with this. First, it is not possible to separate IM packets from any other packets floating around a network. Second, to peek at packets intended for other computers is a pretty big no no.
    If you really need to do this, build a proxy server or some layer in the middle of your IM where you can record

  • I need a help in reading video file of 80MB into ...

    Hello,
    I need a help in reading video file of 80MB into a vector storing ByteArrays in it.Please help me soon.
    Thank You

    Hello,
    I was able to solve my problem by thinking & my code goes as follows.I am trying to read a video file in my program.
    public Vector getFileMediaContent(RandomAccessFile fileObj){
         Runtime runtime = Runtime.getRuntime();
    System.out.println ("Free memory : inside Boolean Type Panel" + runtime.freeMemory() );
    dataContent.removeAllElements();
    System.out.println("dataContent :"+dataContent.size());
    try{
    int size=(int)fileObj.length();
    if(size<2000000){
    byte[] data = new byte[size];
    fileObj.read(data);
    dataContent.addElement(data);
    data=null;
    System.gc();
    else{
    int fixedsize=2000000;
    int startindex=0;
    int read=0;
    int remaining=0;
    while(read!=-1){
    byte[] data=new byte[fixedsize];
    read=fileObj.read(data,0,data.length);
    dataContent.addElement(data);
    startindex=startindex+data.length;
    remaining=size-startindex;
    fileObj.seek(startindex);
    data=null;
    System.gc();
    if(remaining>0 && remaining<2000000){
    byte[] data1=new byte[remaining];
    read=fileObj.read(data1,0,data1.length);
    dataContent.addElement(data1);
    data1=null;
    System.gc();
    System.out.println("outside while");
    System.out.println("dataContent 1 :"+dataContent.size());
    System.out.println ("Free memory : inside Boolean Type Panel" + runtime.freeMemory() );
    fileObj = null;
    System.gc();
    }catch(Exception e){
    e.printStackTrace();
    return dataContent;
    Now I am not facing the problem of IndexOut of Bounds Exception But I am getting Out of Memory Error.
    Can You suggest me to come out of this,.
    As I know I have two solutions.
    1.Make the objects Null which is using more space & call System.gc();
    2.Increase the Virtual Memory of my System.
    Any solutions other than this?
    And How to Increase the Virtual Memory?Please do reply.
    ThankYou

  • Can someone help me read my crash report?

    Hello,
    I have been having problems with my macbook pro.  I am running a 2.66 GHz Core i7 with 8gb on OSX 10.7.4.   I have been having numerous problems with kernel panics and the screen shutting itself off, mainly while editing a lot of video in FCPX.  I have taken this in to best buy where I have the black tie protection and they did not not fix this, even when it was sent back to apple.  I thought i may have figured some problems with my card reader not being compatible, but as I was editing some more, my screen just went blank.  I have reset PRAM and all of that stuff many times, as well as run disk repair under the disk utiility programs.  I have exhausted the basics of restarting, as well as clean installing my entire computer.  Here is the crash report if anyone is able to help and see if there is a problem somewhere.  Thanks for your time

  • Need help repairing Driver - pic included.

    Hey guys, i have been trying to get boot camp to work on my macbook for ages. First i got it to work, but then when i used windows, it wouldn't recognize my wireless in my macbook. Anyways, to make a long story short, i used the boot camp assistant tonight to delete the windows partition, then i was trying to re-install windows XP.
    As most of you know, the first step is to partition the disks, when i told it how much to partition of each it came up with a driver error saying i needed to repair the disks.
    so, i went to disk utility to try and verify the disk, its did, but then it came up with this:
    http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f344/kawirider04/Untitled-1-1.jpg
    any help would be great guys, i eventually want to run windows xp on my blackbook so i can play World of Warcraft with a higher framerate. Anyways, thanks in advance!
    BTW - after i 'verify disk' i can't click on 'repair disk'
    Black Macbook 1gb Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Boot up from your Install DVD and then launch Disc Utility to verify/repair the disc and permissions as well.

  • Since hard drive restore, backup gives Disk Repair, Read-only errors

    Hi all -
    After a hard drive crash last week, I restored the new HD using my historically reliable wireless Time Capsule (TC) with Time Machine (TM). But ever since, backups have ceased to work. Now, TM spins for about an hour before returning the following errors in sequence:
    (1) DISK REPAIR: "The disk 'Backup of [my name] Macbook' was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible."
    (2) TIME MACHINE ERROR: The backup volume is read only. To select a different volume, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine."
    I very much doubt there is an actual problem with the TC disk itself; my wife's iBook G4 continues to backup to it without any problem whatsoever. Related threads have suggested:
    a) doing clever things with Preferences, such as deleting the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file and re-booting. However, for some reason (perhaps related to the source of the problem?) I have no such file...
    b) using Disk Utility to re-format and/or re-partition (these terms mean little to me) the TC disk. But my Disk Utility doesn't see the TC. (Perhaps related, I no longer actually see the little backup disk icon on the desktop.) And as I've said, I doubt very much it's the TC disk itself that it is the problem.
    I have of course tried re-booting everything, as well as un-mounting and re-mounting the TC: Computer, heal thyself! No luck.
    Any guidance is appreciated...
    (PS If there's a log file I should post that might help with diagnostics, just let me know where to find it.)

    I have suffered the same error messages, but without a hard disk crash before it.
    I copied the backup-file from the TC to a separate drive, erased the TC, re-installed it, copied the backup-file to the TC en re-initiated TM only to be welcomed with the 'The backup volume is read only'-message again.
    Beats me why this happened. Most frustrating part, however, is that I am not able to restore from the backup-file. Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

  • Help w/reading from external NTFS hard drive

    Just bought my MacBook yesterday, and hooked up my ext. hard drive (NTFS) via USB. This HDD had been a backup & extra storage for my XP desktop. I was hoping I could have read access to the drive in order to copy music & pics to the Mac.
    When I power up the drive & connect the USB cable I get the following message: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer", and three options: Initialize, Ignore, and Eject. Under initialize I've tried both Verify Disk & Repair Disk, but no joy. Any ideas?
    Thanks for helping a new Switcher!

    Thanx warbirdx, that did the trick!

  • Need help repair permissions!!!!

    I'm trying to download to the desktop and there is 257GB of space available, but it won't let me . It will allow me to download to a folder in my documents. The finder keeps asking for my password when trying to trash items, I type it and then get a message that I don't have permission. I have tried the disk permissions repair, but it doesn't help. I am the administrator of the computer, but I made sure that on my account is was still the administrator. I've read some of the forums pertaining to using terminal to trash, but I am not familiar with that so I didn't want to mess it up any worse. It just seems to effect everything on my desktop. I can download into folders and trash documents that are in folder, just can't download or trash anything on my desktop. It's strange. I have never worked with PC only macs and have never had any trouble until now.

    Gosh that was easy! I have read all the dicussions and thought I was going to have to really do alot of stuff. That was the only thing I didn't think to try. Thanks, it fixed it. Thanks for the quick response.

  • Time Machine just stopped working, Disk Repair & Read Only errors

    So my TM backups have been running fine for at least six months now.
    Today I started to get this error:
    "Disk Repair
    The disk "xxxxxx" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible."
    followed by
    "Time Machine Error
    The backup volume is read only.
    To select a different volume, open System Preferences and choose Time Machine"
    I've searched high and low for a solution to no avail.
    Here's what I've tried so far.
    Attached disk to iMac, repaired the disk. It now verifies with no errors.
    Changed permissions on the disk to 644 through terminal as per an Apple article.
    Rebooted iMac several times, zapped PRAM.
    Anyone have any ideas as to why this is suddenly happening? I would really hate to have to reformat the disk and start from scratch. This is very frustrating, I've changed nothing.
    Here's the log from Time Machine Buddy:
    Starting standard backup
    Disk image /Volumes/FreeAgent Drive/Thomas Torrillo’s iMac_002332917af9.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Backup of Thomas Torrillo’s iMac
    Backing up to: /Volumes/Backup of Thomas Torrillo’s iMac/Backups.backupdb
    The target volume is read-only.
    Backup failed with error: The target volume is read-only.
    Ejected Time Machine disk image.

    What to do if Time Machine reports you don't have permission
    This was posted in the Apple Discussions by V.K. I have only modified it slightly to be more generic.
    The problem seems to be that 10.5.6 changes permissions on a file so that even the root user doesn't have write peivileges. I have no idea why they did this. The workaround suggested in [an]other post will probably work, too, but i did something less drastic. Instead of deleting the file I changed permissions on it, and it worked just fine. An added benefit is that the permission change seems to stick, so you don't have to delete the file every time you change a drive.
    [Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt [enter] the following command:
    sudo chmod 644 /volumes/"TM drive name"/.xxxxxxxxxxxx
    The name of the file .xxxxxxxxxxxx is based on the MAC address of your computer and will be different for every computer. Put the name of the TM drive in the above and keep the quotes.
    You'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see) which is normal.
    This was edited by Kappy just for cleanup.
    Enable Finder to Show Invisible Files and Folders
    Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following command line then press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    To turn off the display of invisible files and folders enter or paste the following command line and press RETURN.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    Alternatively you can use one of the numerous third-party utilities such as TinkerTool or ShowHideInvisibleFiles - VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Need help repairing bootable external drive permissions

    I, like some of the other posters I have read, have messed up the permissions on a bootable external drive.
    I don't have direct access to my home computer right now so I set up an external bootable copy of my personal account, so I can basically run a copy of my own personal computer from anyone elses mac. And when I get back home I will be able to copy back across any new files.
    The set up was working great till I realized that my external drive was completely readable, and writeable by anyone who turned it on as a peripheral disk while logged in on the main computer if the computer was booted up on it's own startup disk.
    If my external was set as the startup disk, then my password and account kept everything secure.
    So anyway, not really knowing what I was doing I, using the show info command, changed the group permission for the whole disk/volume from admin to my username. Now unfortunately I cannot startup using my external disk; the whole system goes straight to Kernal. And all my files are still totally assesible to any one logged in on the computer using its own start up disk.
    Can you help me with the commands, to first repair the group permission so my disk is bootable again, then second so that I can prevent anyone with out my password access to any files on the disk?
    Thanks alot!

    Can you help me with the commands, to first repair the group permission so my disk is bootable again, then second so that I can prevent anyone with out my password access to any files on the disk?
    On another machine, open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, select your drive in the list of disks, and then click on the Repair Permissions button; other solutions are available if this doesn't work.
    Your two goals are mutually exclusive; there is no way to restrict access to an entire disk to yourself while maintaining the ability of that disk to boot Mac OS X. Your home folder can be protected in this way by changing the permissions on the item inside /Users/ with the house icon, or by turning on FileVault in the Security pane of System Preferences.

  • Need help, please read.

    For a birthday present, I received an iPhone 3G.
    Recently, I've noticed that sometimes my iPhone's usual sounds do not work as they should.
    To be more specific, my iPhone does NOT ring sometimes. It DOES however, show that the person is calling successively. But, the iPhone only vibrates, and sometimes it will ring.
    Also, when I lock/unlock my phone, the clicking sound does not happen, even though "ring" is on. But, other times it will work and the sound will play. Sometimes when I text the letters will not make any sounds, again, even though I have my iPhone set to ring.
    Is there anyone that has/had the same problem I am having ?
    If so, help me out here on what I should do ..
    I'm thinking of bringing my phone to a AT&T store and have them take a look at it, maybe I'll get a new one for free .. ?
    Please help.
    Thank you

    Standard troubleshooting steps in order are power your iPhone off and on, an iPhone reset - which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release - ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so, restoring your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup, and restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.
    AT&T does not handle iPhone repairs or exchanges under Apple's warranty.
    If no change after the troubleshooting steps provided in order, you can call AppleCare, or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

    the plans show that your first query has to do much more work than the second query (250M vs. 17M consistent gets). The queries use different plans and the second plan seems to be the better choice - since the first query does not return any rows. The plans also tell us where the time is spent - and there are some nested loops with extreme execution counts and a lot of expansive index access operations (especially the skip scan on P_HOLDINGS), but I would prefer to use a a plan with rowsource statistics to find the errors in the optimizers cardinality estimations.
