Help replacing colors CS3

Hello, I got PS CS3 and I'm having a hard time trying to do 2 things:
1) I'd like to use the "replace color" function in order to remove a background color and make it transparent. How do I do that? I can make it green, red, whatever color I like but not transparent!?
2) There's another part, which is black, that I want to make red. Now when I replace the colors it becomes gray. There a way to fix this?
Thanks

Hi James,
In my humble opinion you can get far more control with Photoshop's native blending options than with either of those 2 filters.
Method 1
1. Make a regular layer from the Background
2. Layer style > Blending Options > under Blend If and This Layer: drag the white slider a tiny bit to the left.
3. You can get even more control by Alt-Dragging the left part of this tiny triangle to the left (they are in fact two sliders) and using the Alt key splits it into two.
I usually first put a colored layer underneath with a contrasting color so as to better be able to see and fine tune the settings.
Method 2
Is a bit more advanced but this way you can take advantage of the Refine Edge command.
1. Make a regular layer from the Background
2. Add a layer under the existing layer and fill it with a contrasting color
3. Layer style > Blending Options > under Blend If and This Layer: drag the white slider a tiny bit to the left.
4. You can get even more control by Alt-Dragging the left part of this tiny triangle to the left.
5. Notice that although you have transparency the layer thumbnail is still white. We are going to fix this:
6. Put a new layer UNDER the current layer.
7. Activate the layer above and Merge down (Ctrl + E)
8. Ctrl-click the layer thumbnail to load the contents as a selection.
9. Use Refine Edge to fine tune your selection
10. Selection > Inverse and Delete or better yet add a mask

  • Replace Color  - selected areas turn gray instead of desired sample color.  HELP?!

Hi, I am using Photoshop CS3 and have a question regarding "replace color."
First...here are the steps I enacted prior to trying to use the 'replace color' function:
    1. In RGB Mode - - Selected and filled a shape a color.
    2. Ran the selected object through Alien Skin/Impact "Chrome" function.
    3. Selected 'adjustments/desaturate.' Did this so that I could then go to Adjustments/color balance..... and then change the entire color of the object to a predominantly red chrome looking scheme.
    4. After giving the object a 'chrome' appearance, I wanted to go into the 'white' hilite areas of the object and sample them - and then change them to a bright red color....this is where the 'REPLACE COLOR' function comes in.
    5. So I use the color sample eye dropper within 'REPLACE COLOR' and select the white areas I want to change to red...as the 'selection color.'
    6. Then, I click down in the lower color box (result color) and sample a color that I want to change the white hilite areas to...in this case, red.
    7. This is where the problem occurs - - even though I chose a result color of red...the white areas turn to grayscale within my colored object...so just those areas are gray!!! What the heck??!!
So... how can I desaturate a selected object... then recolor it using 'Color Balance'.... and then replace colors and have the replaced colors actually be a color instead of a gray color?
My file is in RGB mode and everything else is in COLOR.... yet I cannot replace areas within this colored graphic with other colors...it just keeps putting gray tones into the object.
    HELP??
    Thanks.

Hi Curt - - this occurs even if I select a color within the same file... something about desaturating the file and then adding color back into it...I can't get it to replace color after that.

  • Missing "Replace Color" tool in CS3

I'm using CS3 (Windows) and I'm missing the "Replace Color" tool.
Every other tools seem to be available (I think).  See a screen capture of my tool-bar below.
Could I have inadvertently deleted/removed my Replace Color tool?
Is there a way to restore my Replace Color tool?
    CRS

See the rubber stamp tool in the lower right of the bitmap tools? Click on the small triangle in the lower-right corner to bring up the pop-up menu. It's in there, along with the red-eye removal tool. Any time there's a small triangle, that means there are multiple tools in one square.

  • No matter what I have set for the foreground color, the "replacing" color is gray. How do I fix this? FAST HELP NEEDED!

Any color I select is automatically set to gray...

What does "replacing color" mean? what tool/ function? What images? What system? What version of PS? What else? You need to be a lot more specific and provide more info.

  • Can't replace color in PSE 9

I am trying to replace one color with another in a photo in PSE 9. Following the instructions in the on-line help does not work. Here is what I do.
    1) Select the eye dropper and click in the image to set the foreground color to the replacement color.
    2) Right click on the brush tool and choose the color replacement tool. Set the options to Mode=Color, Limits=Discontiguous, Tolerance=25%, Anti-alias=On.
    3) Left click on the color in the photo that I want to replace.
    4) Hold down the left mouse button and drag over the area containing the color I want to replace. Nothing happens when I do this.
In the photos in the Replace Colors in an Image help topic it appears that at some point in the process the cursor should change to include an eye dropper. I assume this is the cursor I should see before I left click to select the color I wish to replace, however, at no time does the cursor ever contain an eye dropper.
Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks.

How are you trying to save? Works for me.

  • Replace Color Command Saturation Algorithm

For the Replace Color Command (not the Replace Color Tool), the meaning of the Saturation slider is clear only when the slider value is negative (reducing saturation). In that case the slider reading is the percent by which the (H-L) gap is to be reduced, where H and L are the highest and lowest RGB channel values. A reading of -100 means the gap is to be completely closed. Whatever the percentage closure, it is effected by decreasing H and increasing L in equal increments proportional to the slider setting.
When the saturation slider is set to a positive number (increasing saturation), however, the meaning is not easily unearthed. The incremental changes in H and L, although still equal and opposite in algebraic sign, are now a non-linear function of the slider and the initial H and L values, but I have not been able to nail it.
BTW, The middle RGB channel plays no role in either case. With H and L set, it is adjusted to keep hue constant.
Any help out there? Gernot? Anybody?

Bump---with apologies. First time ever (honest). Apart from staving off the post's oblivion, I want to verify just where in the ladder a bump jumps.

  • HP PSC 1600 All-In-One error message remove and replace color cartridge

I get the remove and replace color cartridge and printer or scanner won't work. I have replaced the cartridge with new ones twice and it still happens. Just installed a new HP color cartridge and no luck. I've tried everything I can think of.
Please, does anyone have any other suggestions????
    Thank you,

    Hi MJKEL,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you are having an issue with errors on the printer pertaining the ink cartridges.
I do have a few steps that we can try in the attempt to troubleshoot this issue.
First off, please make sure that you have the printer power cable connected directly to a wall outlet and not a power bar/strip. Here is a document that uses a LaserJet printer as an example but it is meant for HP products in general. Please click on the following link that explains the Issues when Connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply/Power Strip/Surge Protector.
I have also located a documet that deals with A 'Remove and Check [color / black / photo] Cartridge' Error Message Displays on the Printer Control...
Please feel free to write me back if you have any other questions or concerns.
    Cheers,

  • Rid pattern on background, replace color?

Hi. Using PS CS4 on XP.
I have a background with a pattern on it (dark brown flowery lines). I wanted to know if there is a good way to get rid of it. I heard I should use replace color. I was trying that out, but part of the pattern is still faint. I was wondering if there is another option or a combination of options I should be doing. Do I need to trace the whole path with the pen tool of the pattern?
I am going to attach an image before I made any changes.
By the way, is Adobe Forums REAL slow for anyone? Every time I go on here, it takes at least 5 minutes to load.
    Thanks for any help.

    Seems fast enough here...
Is this background interspersed heavily with the rest of an image?
In other words, what are you trying to retain?  The texture but not the pattern?
To "rid" an image of a pattern one only need substitute a smooth color, which would more involve isolating the main subject (and any other parts you want to keep) from the background, then filling with a solid color through one of the various means.  There are many ways of making and refining selections to isolate subjects from backgrounds.
I guess to answer your question properly, we need to know more about the entire image and your intent.

  • Receive error message to replace color cartridge

All test page diagnostics show all ink cartridges are adequate and test pages print out great-but when I try to print in color I get an error message to print in black and white or replace color cartridge.

What printer model?  I would guess you have a printer with seperate printheads and ink cartridges like the 02 cartridges.  There is some plumbing that connects the permanant printheads to the ink supplies.  If the pump or the plumbing is clogged then the printer will not print properly even if there is adequate ink in the ink supply cartridges and the printheads are OK.

  • Replacing color

I've read the other posts on this subject but it is not helping me. I have a jpg image that is black and white with some red lines running through it. I would like to remove the red lines. I go to Enhance> Adjust color > Replace color. Then I click on the red line as the color to be replaced, then below I click on the background color of the page, but I end up with a line that is fainter but has a blue hue to it. I want the red line to go away completely, or more accurately be replaced by the white background color. Thanks for any help. Elements 10.

Just a quick addendum: The red value need to be 255, but the green and blue can be anything else as long as they are roughly similar:  ie. 255,128,128 will work with the above method.
In fact, an even shorter way to accomplish your task is to just use the curves adjustment layer to bring the individual red green and blue up to 255 (255,255,255 is pure white). The black and white elements will remain unchanged, but the colours will go to white (ie. your red lines).
    EDIT:
OR... you could even use 2 Hue/Saturation adjustment layers. In the first, use the saturation slider to bring up the reds to 255, then use the second Hue/Saturation layer to increase the lightness of the reds until it goes white

  • Replace Color Brush Size

Is it possible to have a brush size greater than 100 when
    using the replace color feature.
I have tried entering a figure manualy but it resets itself
    to 100 each time.

I'm using Fireworks CS3 (PC). I was able to enter numeric
values, press enter, and get larger brushes. If I enter a value
higher than 899 it ignores it however, but I can enter any value
    lower than that.

  • Replace Color question

I have an image taken from off the Net that I need to edit and change some colors.
In the Replace Color dialog I can select the "source color"  but I can't specify the "destination color" except by dragging the Hue slider.
I'd like to be able to specify the "destination color" I want in more detail, like selecting it from a pallette, inputting RGB/HSB values etc.
    How could I do that?

Choose Image > Image Adjustments > Hue/Saturation or press Ctrl + U keys. Drag the Hue slider to -150, Saturation slider to +2 and Lightness to -4.
If you want to limit the color correction only to the blue gradient, first select the the pointing hand (On Image Adjustment tool) at the bottom of the Hue/Saturation window and click with it once on the blue gradient.
If you want to sample the values from the green gradient to help you choose the values in the Hue/Saturation sliders, first open the Info panel and change its readout to HSB color, then after opening the Hue/Saturation window and clicking with the On Image Adjustment tool to limit the color range for the correction, disable the On Image Adjustment tool by clicking on its button again. Then move the mouse cursor over the the left edge of the green gradient on the image, and check the values in the Info panel. Then change the values in the Hue/Saturation window and also keep the mouse cursor on the left edge of the blue gradient on the image until the hue value of the blue gradient in the Info panel matches the hue value of the green gradient. Then repeat the same for the Lightness and Saturation.
I don't know if this is possible on Macs but on Windows any input box in the programs has virtual slider capability by clicking in the input box and using the up and down arrow keys on the keyboard. You can take advantage of this when using the Hue/Saturation window and sampling colors from the image by keeping your mouse cursor stationary on the image to sample values as reflected in the Info panel while using the up and down arrows of the keyboard to change the values of the Hue/Saturation sliders.
For more details about using the Hue/Saturation controls read the manual: http://helpx.adobe.com/content/help/en/photoshop/using/adjusting-image-color-tone.html#adj ust_hue_and_saturation
