Help replacing MBP hard drive?

I'd like to replace the hard drive in my Macbook Pro (15" mid-2009, OS X 10.6.8) but I wanted to check if I actually know what I'm doing before I get started. I think I have a handle on the hardware side of things, but I'm not sure what the best way to transfer all my data would be. This is basically what I'm thinking:
1. Install new hard drive in an external enclosure and connect to laptop via USB.
2. Format new hard drive in GUID Partition Table.
3. Use SuperDuper to create a bootable clone of my current hard drive onto the new one.
4. Install new hard drive in laptop.
If anyone's done this before and can let me know if this will/won't work, I'd really appreciate it!

You have the process down right. One ammendment: after step 3, verify that the clone is bootable by booting from the external drive. Just restart and hold the Option key down. After you boot from the clone go on to your step 4.
You seem to have done your homework, so I'm sure you know that you need a Torx 6 screw driver as well as a Phillips 0 driver.

  • I just had to replace my hard drive. I want to know how to re-download my Lightroom 5.0. I have my serial number and everything. Please help me!!

So, this past week I had a lot of problems with my computer and had to replace my hard drive. Doing so, meant that I lost all my files, pictures, Word, Power Point, and Lightroom 5.0 which I just got in December. Right now, I just am downloading the Cloud, and it says that Lightroom is downloading. I hope that it will be on my computer and all good but Im really not sure if I'm doing the right thing. I tried calling customer service TWICE yesterday, got put on hold both times, once for 25 minutes the other for 32 minutes. I was dumb. BUT if you are able to help me get Lightroom back on to my computer that would be wonderful. If I am already on the right path and just have to wait for it to finish downloading that woohoo!!
    Thanks,

  • I replaced my hard drive on my late 2006 Macbook Pro.  I tried to do a reinstall of Tiger 10.4.5 from my start up disk.  I get an error that states "can't install on this computer." HELP

I replaced my hard drive on my late 2006 Macbook Pro.  I used the disk utility and erased the drive and formatted it to OSX Journaled .  When I tried to install the OS from the start up disks I got the error "Can't install on this computer.  I have verified the drive.
I have used Super Duper to copy my old drive to my new drive.  But I wanted to do a fresh install.  How do I go about this?

Did you do the Super Duper clone before you tried to reinstall the OS? If so, the original install disc is likely earlier than 10.4.11, and that may be why you are getting the message.
When trying to reinstall the OS, did you select the "Archive and Install" option? If not, you might try that. Here's a link that might help:

I replaced the hard drive, motherboard, and battery but now can not restore my Ipod 5th gen?  Error code 1416, any help?

When I did a Google search on "1416 error ipod 5th," there is some discussion that the earlier version of the logic board only accepted 30 and 60 GB drives (or words to that effect), but the later "5.5" version did allow larger capacity drives.  If that info is true, the question is, do you have a compatible combination of logic board and hard drive?

  • Help Downloading PS Lightroom (had to replace computer hard drive)

Hi.  I have two keycodes for Lightroom, the one I originally purchased in 2011, and an upgrade from last year.  I just replaced the hard drive on my laptop, and want to re-download Lightroom for my own personal and professional use.
I do not want to load the creative cloud, I just want the LR software on my laptop (it's a PC, Windows 7).
    Thank you.

Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support - US (800) 767-2775 for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html
Or you can purchase the applications from an Apple retail outlet, App Store or the Apple online store.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Windows images, but you get the point. Depending on the age of your library the library file might not include the .itl extention. Make it match the file you are replacing.
See MusicFolder Files Not Added and Super Remove Dead Tracks for tools to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.

  • 2009 macbook pro incorrect number of file hard links. repaired and still slow. I replaced the hard drive within the year and it's 1 tb not full. help!

I have a 2009 macbook pro and I keep it up to date. I replaced the hard drive with a new 1 tb hard drive within the last year. It is not even close to full. The other night I was doing a time machine backup and the spinning color wheel appeared. It would not go away and the only thing I could do was restart the computer. The Grey apple screen appeared and nothing else happens. I restarted in disk utility and verified the drive. It said "incorrect number of file hard links". I repaired it successfully and check the drive as well as the startup drive. All was ok. I restarted my computer and it took forever to come on. It is now one but I can not do anything. The desktop and all appropriate dock items are there but I can not do anything. What should I do?

It's likely that the startup drive, or some other hardware component, is failing. Back up all data immediately, then run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test.
Even if the test is negative, you should make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested more thoroughly.

  • I had to replace my hard drive in my iMac iSight and now I need to load an os all I have is my windows laptop any help?

I just had to replace the hard drive on my iMac iSight G5 and now I have no os and have no idea where my restore discs are i was wondering if I purchased an os from apple if there is a way I can load it onto dvd then load my iMac

You can contact Apple at 800-767-2775, give them your serial number (under the foot of your iMac) and they will, for a small fee, send you the install disc.  Then buy a black retail OS from Apple or eBay.

  • My G62-340US, I just had to replace the hard drive. My recovery discs seem compromised. HELP

On my G62-340US, I just had to replace the hard drive. I made the 4 recovery discs when it was new. Now restoring it 3 of the recovery discs ran but the 4th disc won't. Can the info on the 4th be found anywhere without having to buy a new set? Or can I buy just one disc?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi:
As far as I know, you would have to buy an entire new set.
But, if you can read all 25 characters of the W7 product key on the bottom of your notebook, I have a free solution to install a plain version of W7 by using the product key code on your notebook.
    Here's how to do that...
Download the W7 Home Premium 64 bit ISO file from the Microsoft link below.
    http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso 2147483647 X17-58997.iso Windows 7 Home Premium x64 English
Make sure you got the whole 3.xx GB file to download because in rare circumstances, you get a download complete notification but you don't get the whole file to download.
After you download the ISO file you can burn it to a DVD using the ISO file burn option on your DVD burning program, or you can use this tool to transfer the ISO file to a DVD or 4 GB USB flash drive.
The tool will also make the media bootable.
    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool
Then go to your notebook's support and driver page for the drivers and available software you need.

  • I replaced my hard drive and am installing the OS 10.5.6 that i got from Apple. It is stuck with 7 minutes remaining. Help! this is the first time I've ever done this.

I just replaced my hard drive in my 13" Macbook. I got the OS install disk from Apple but it's stuck with 7 minutes remaining. What do I do now? I let it check the disk before the install.

Did you properly prep your new drive first?
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.  If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.
I think you should shutdown the installer then erase the drive per the above and start again.

  • I had to replace my hard drive and when I plug in my iPad, itunes says  it is synced with another computer, and asks to erase all my data. Help!

I had to replace my hard drive and now when I plug in my iPad, itunes says it is synced with another library

That is because the iPad can only "sync" to one iTunes library at a time. You can move all of the iPad contents into a new iTunes library. This discussion will give you a lot of useful information.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3305461
This one is Mac specific - not that it is any different except for the iTunes menu.

Remember to authorize the computer in iTunes first - From the iTunes menu go to Store>Authorize this computer.

  • MacBook pro boots to prohibited sign and apple has replaced the Hard drive and it's still didnt fix. They want to replace the hard drive AGAIN?!

I've had this issue for almost a month now, and they have tried multiple things to fix it from software re-installs to wiping the drive and they replaced the hard drive and cable but now that it is still not working they are suggesting installing another hard drive after it clearly didn't work the last time they replaced it. Help! I've contacted customer relations and the only thing she told me over and over is that they are working diligently to fix it. I'm a music teacher and that is currently the only computer i have and I use July to prep all my lesson plans and music. School starts august 18th and I feel like I'll be back in the store with the same problem again right when school starts. Any suggestions, ill probably be writing a letter very soon, any other suggestions?
Btw I have tried not backing up from time machine to rule out the possibility of something of mine corrupting it and it still did it.
Thanks for your help apple community!

Wholly Crap, No Joke, the lady from the apple store called me up at like 5pm and said "You know what?" and my reply was....... "what" and she goes, "You've been very patient and we understand you've been in and out in the last 3 weeks so we've decided to just give you a brand new computer" She gave me a brand new MBP! SO FREAKIN STOKED, my 2008 macbook pro for a new 2011 2.2ghz with 4 gigs of memory (Upgradeable to 8!!) The only downside is that since I use this for recording audio with Pro Tools well as recording audio with Pro Tools I needed the 7200rpm drive like my last one, and with her eyes i felt the "Beggars Cant be choosy" look flow upon me. But I shrugged it off and She actually told me to take this one, use it for the next week while the one she is ordering for me comes in!! So Bottom line IMHO (first time i've ever used that acronym in a forum) Apple Definitely has some awesome customer service!!

  • Upgrading Your 17" MBP Hard Drive? (FYI/Review)

    Greetings!
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned, but I wanted to give a heads-up to anyone who might be replacing their hard drive in a 17" MBP...
Mine is 15 months old. I read all of the posts, and reviewed all of the online instructions for replacing the drive. Overall, the process was pretty routine. However, there was one surprise to be aware of, that I did not find in any of the material I read or reviewed...
When I got to the point of removing the actual drive, I was surprised to find the design of my MBP differed from others shown in the various online instructions I reviewed. As the general instructions go, you simply need to remove the two screws/rubber mounts on the right side of the drive, gently slide it out, disconnect the cable, and you're home free...
However, on my MBP there were two other pesky screws/rubber mounts located on the left side of the drive, which were attached to the framed molding the drive sits in. Problem is, this molding doesn't come off. On that same left side, the molding is fitted underneath the card slot circuitry, adjacent to the top of the drive. There's not a lot of room to work there. Without having some sort of narrow-bend, angled #6 torque driver, this baby didn't look like it was accessible...
I ended up having to remove one torque screw and one very small phillips screw from the front of the molding, located near the latch button. This allowed me to gently pry up the front left corner of this molding to get the front left screw out of the drive. The back left screw was a different story. There's not as much give in this section. I had to go with the gently-pry-up method. It had some give (It's plastic), but I had to be very careful not to snap the thing...
Once I got that last screw out, I put the new drive in, as instructed. However, getting those two left screws back in were a pain. Unless you have a third hand, when you lift up the plastic molding to put the screw back in, you need to try and balance/line up the drive with the holes. Again, this is all pretty snug and tight. If you sneeze while holding up this molding and drive, you could snap the whole thing...
I am by no means an expert. Maybe I'm an idiot and someone has posted a better method for this type of MBP design. I didn't find one. Anyway, I just thought I would share my experience. I know there are some definite model differences between various dates of manufacture. Once again, if I hadn't had this issue, this would have been a 30 minute job. I laid out a piece of large packing tape right-side up on a towel. I laid out all the screws for each removal phase on this tape in rows, marking where they came from on a sheet of paper. Beyond the surprise design issues, it went quite smoothly...
    Hope this helps someone...
    Blessings,
    Craig

A 17" mid 2009 MBP will accept up to 8 GB RAM with the following specifications:  204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  The best sources for Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
Any 2.5", 9.5 mm thick SATA HDD/SSD will be compatible with your MBP,  You should have no difficulty in finding a 1 TB HDD for your MBP.  Start your search by examining the selection here:
