Help required please! Netgear router to Airport Express to stream iTunes

I have recently purchased an Airport Express and I have an iTunes account.
I wish to stream music from a computer in one room to a Sony Hi fi in another room (not very far apart). I am having great difficulty in setting this up with instructions in the box.
I have a NETGEAR wireless router provided free by Virgin when they put my broadband cable in. So I need simple step by step instructions on how to link the Netgear router on my computer with the Airport down on my hi-fi. I have the cable to the hi-fi plugged into the Airport and the router is working okay.
I have spent hours on this and have also had a computer expert try to help me but he has drawn a blank. When I click on Airport Utilities the message comes up saying that it has not detected a wireless device. Scan Again! Can anybody help?

initiate the set up using ethernet then configure the Express wireless setting. Y=As the second router you may need to put it in bridge mode. Use Airport Utility to do that.

  • Best Practices for Using Airport Express to Stream iTunes via Ethernet

So I've been reading various posts about using Airport Express to stream iTunes and I've been reading various posts about using the Ethernet port on the Express. However, not sure I've yet found an inclusive listing of settings for both. Wondering if anyone out there has such a thing?
I have an (older) Aiport Express (802.11g, no 'n') running the latest Firmware (6.3, I believe). I have it lashed into my switch via a Cat 6 cable and the 3.5 stereo mini running out to RCA jacks into my RussSound (home audio system) amp. I'd like to make the Express ONLY a iTunes streaming device getting its network link over Ethernet (AirTunes). So, what does everyone suggest for best settings for turning on the Ethernet, turning off the WiFi and running AirTunes?
    Thanks much in advance!
    cheers

Airport > Wireless > Wireless mode "off"
Internet > Internet connection > Connect using "Ethernet", Configure IPv4 "via DHCP"
    Music > Enable Airtunes
Enable Airtunes over Ethernet (if this choice appears).
When I first did this, the remote speakers didn't appear in iTunes. I poked around to see what I missed and couldn't find anything wrong, but the next time I ran iTunes the remote speakers appeared.
If you run into a firewall problem, make sure your OS X firewall is configured to "set access for specific services and applications": http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/18503.html
Firmware 6.3 is correct for your Express.

  • Netgear router and airport express

    hi
could someone please help me and tell me(in very simple terms!) how to extend the range of my network. my mini mac is too far away from my netgear DG834GT router and have been trying for days to use a/ex to reach it.Have tried everything i know which i freely admit isnt much but airport utility doesn't seem to see the router. i have seen people having similar problems but am hoping someone is out there to take me through it in words of 2 syllables or less! help

charlie117, Welcome to the discussion area!
The Netgear device is not compatible with Apple's WDS. Therefore there is no way to use your AirPort Express (AX) to wirelessly extend the range of the Netgear.
You could run an Ethernet cable from the Netgear to the AX. Then the AX would create a wireless network at it's location which would be an extension of the Netgear's network.

  • Why won't Airport Utility recognize my Airport Express? I'vetried re-booting router, Modem, reset button etc.  It was working fine until I was asked to do an update.  I got the Airport Express to stream Itunes to external Audioengine 5 speakers. 3 hrs!

I have tried everything for over 3 hrs. I purchase really good Audioengine speakers and an Airport express.  Everything was streaming fine via Itunes until I was prompted to do an update yesterday.  Now Airport Utility won't recognize the Airport Express. I tried everyhing.  I have an older Mac desktop and simply wanted to stream music to the remote speakers.  I tried reet button on the Airport express, re-booted my computer, modem, wireless router.   Help!

Be sure you performed the "hard reset" correctly. The following is an excerpt from Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
Press and hold the reset button with a pen or pencil until you see the status light (LED) start to flash amber rapidly, which should occur after about five seconds.
Release the button, and the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule will hard reset.
... but read the entire document to ensure you do it correctly. An Express that has been "hard reset" will create an open network with the name "Apple Network nnnnnn" where nnnnnn = the last few digits of its MAC address. Select that network.
If you do not see the network in your Mac's Wi-Fi menu with that name, the "hard reset" did not take effect, which will happen if you do not hold its little reset button depressed long enough. In that case do it again.
Following the "hard reset", reconfigure your Express.

  • Time Capsule to Airport Express to stream iTunes

This is probably straightforward, but I have been struggling to find absolute confirmation of this anywhere.
I run to Windows laptops. I have a netgear modem/router (g) and I stream itunes, from ojne laptop to two airport expresses, connected to hi-fi equipment. I need a device for wireless back ups and to stream music directly to the Airport Expresses, when my laptop is turned off. Can the Time Capsule do this for me or do I need any other devices? Can I use my old Netgear as the modem and hardwire it to the Time Capsule? Could I also add another Airport Express to extend the range of the network to the hi-fi dedicated Airport Expresses, if necessary.

Ok, let's double-check the settings to have the AX join the TC's wireless network for iTunes streaming.
Temporarily connect the AX directly to one of the LAN ports of the TC using an Ethernet cable, and then, using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, check the following settings:
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing TC's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)
Verify that you can now "see" the AX in iTunes. Once verified, remove the AX from the TC and place it at the desired location.

  • Airport Express To Stream iTunes - Some Questions

    Hi,
I'm getting an AX primarily to stream iTunes music. I am currently using the Time Capsule product to run my wireless home network.......
With AX do you need to stream to powered speakers or a stereo only? Can you just plug in a set of headphones into the AX unit to listen to the music? Also, I do have a Bose home theatre system and a set of Bose pc speakers. I'm assuming those Bose items could be used for listening ? I'm assuming the cable would run from the AX unit to the input on either the Bose home theatre system or the Bose speaker system?
    Now for the set-up questions......
As I said, I'm using the time capsule as my wireless router for the home network. What steps do I follow to integrate the AX unit into my existing wireless network ? Is it possible once the AX unit is set-up to take it and plug it in different spots around the house to stream iTunes ?
I'm sorry for the basic questions...i'm a bit new at the apple products and want to get this right the first time!
I just bought my first mac after many years with pcs and am absolutely loving it!
Thanks in advance for the guidance!
    Mike

  • Please HELP!!! Setting up airport express

    Hi all,
I'm new to the community and totally stuck!   LOL :-(
Toys I have:      draytek 2820n wireless router
apple airport express (white one that looks like apple TV)
                                iPhone 4
Hifi system I have connected to the airport.
network switch plugged into draytek 2820n
iTunes on computer (windsows 7) - connected to router via net switch
All iTunes media on external NAS drive - connected to router via net switch
My home network is all wired via the gigabit net switch.
I would like to be able to use my existing wifi network to airplay music from my iPhone and my gigabit wired network to stream from iTunes on my computer.
I do not want to add another wifi network to my homem network.  The draytek 2820n router and the airport are next to each other and the hifi system.
Having read the setup guide for the airport express I'm left baffled!  ALL of my ethernet devices are connected to my network switch.  This in turn is conected by ethernet cable to the gigabit port on my draytek 2820n.
What I don't understand is how to connect the airport to my system.  As the router, airport and hifi are next to each other, I would like to connect the airport by ethernet cable directly to my router.  Then I would like to disble wifi on the airport and use the wifi network provided by my router (draytek 2820n) to stream music to my system.
Is this possible?? and if so, could someone please tell me if I use the LAN or WAN port on the router and the WAN or LAN port on the airport express?
Any help would be fantastic as having read the setup guide, I do not understand if it's bridge, extended etc?
Many heartfelt thanks in advance for any help offered as I'm lost!

If it is being used to provide a wireless network then it must connect to the Internet first which would be done by connecting an Ethernet cable between the AEX and a LAN port on your router. If the AEX is connecting to the local router wirelessly, then an Ethernet cable needs to ge from the AEX to the device being connected to the network remotely.
You haven't described what you want to do nor what sort of hardware makes up your current network. It would also help to know if  you are using a new AEX or an older generation. In the case of the latter which generation.

  • Extend Range of Belkin Wireless Router with Airport Express Base Station

I would like to know if I can extend the range of my Belkin N1 Wireless Router using the the Apple Airport Express Base Station?
If so, can someone help me to find out which settings/configuration I need to set of my Router and Airport Express in order the extend the range of my network.
Thank you in advance for your support.

DLink Xtreme wireless N cabled to the Time Capsule 1TB - Simultaneous dual-band Wi-Fi. In addition to extending wireless range, would this also allow me to connect cabled devices to the Airport? In essence, increasing the number of cable ports available on the network?
Connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the D-Link router to the WAN (circle icon) port on the Time Capsule.
Configure the Time Capsule as a "bridge" to use the exact same wireless network name, exact security and password as the D-Link router and you will in effect, have one large wireless network. Computers will be able to "roam" from one area to another and they will automatically connect to the router with the strongest signal.
The ethernet ports on the Time Capsule would be active and operate exactly the same as the LAN ports on the D-Link. Computers could plug into either router for an ethernet connection.
The toughest challenge in this type of configuration with routers from two different manufacturers is that they typically use different names for security types. If the security settings between the two routers do not match exactly, you won't have one network, you'll have two, each requiring a separate log on.
Check the configuration pages on the D-Link to see what type of security it is configured to use. Hopefully, it is +WPA2 Personal+, since that is the most compatible type of security among devices. Or +WPA/WPA2 Personal+ would work.
If the D-Link does not use this type of security, what is it using now? What are the other WPA associated settings that are available? We need to know this in order to provide you with the correct step by step configuration.
Post back with your questions and findings.

  • How to setup ADSL moden router and Airport Express 802.11n (1st Generation) to provide internet and airplay connections to multiple devices?

I have a Netgear wireless ADSL modem router (wireless + four ethernet out ports)  that i'd like to connect to a 1st gen Airport Express to create a small home network to provide internet access for a MacBook, iPhone and Apple TV, and to provide Airplay connection to the Apple TV and Airport Express audio output jack.
I'd like to turn off the wireless function of the ADSL modem router, and to have from one of its ethernet out ports an ethernet cable providing internet directly connected to my MacBooks ethernet port.
Then from one of the other ethernet outs on the ADSL modem router an ethernet cable connected to the Airport Express's ethernet port. This would be to provide wireless internet connection for the Apple TV and iPhone via WiFi from the AE.
At the same time as the MacBook is receviing internet soley via the ethernet in port, i'd like it to have WiFi connection to the AE to provide Airplay connection to the Apple TV and the AE's audio out jack.
Is this all possible? How should I go about to configure this? How should the AE's ethernet port be configured?
Any special modes the ADSL modem router or Airport Express should be in? ie bridge or client?
    Thanks

On the ADSL modem router web-based interface, should I set any security setting? I think not as there'll be no wireless signal coming from it, only wired ethernet connections to both MacBook and AE. Security should only be set on the AE to prevent someone from accessing its WiFi signal. Is this assumption correct?
    These are all correct!
How should I go about setting up security for this network?
First I would recommend that you configure the AirPort Express for WPA2 Personal. This will provide you with the greastest level of security while still providing excellent bandwidth performance.
You would configure wireless security for the Express by using the AirPort Utility on a Mac, PC, or iOS device. Using your MacBook Pro as an example, you would do so as follows:
    Run the AirPort Utility.
Select the Express, and then, click on Edit.
Select the Wireless tab to enable it.
Set the Wireless Security option to: WPA2 Personal
Enter the desired password in both the Wireless Password & Verify Password fields. Note: Use of a "strong" password is encourage here. By strong, I mean use a mix of upper/lowercase letters, numbers, & punctuation marks. Try not to use common dictionary words. If you operate your wireless in an area where security is of an utmost concern, I would further suggest that you change the wireless security password every 60-90 days. Also don't forget to change the default AirPort Base Station Administrator password as well.
Click on Update and allow the Express to restart.

  • I am using an airport express to stream from iTunes to my stereo.  My router is a net gear type G.  Setting up is no problem for the first time.  But, when I close iTunes then restart I have to reset (using the reset button)and reset up.  Wanna do it one?

Using a. Airport express to stream from iTunes.  My Router is a Netgear type G.  The express sets up fine and works the first time.  When I try to use it at a later date after closing then reopening iTunes I have to physically reset the express and then go through the process of finding it again.  Is this normal?

I have a 3rd generation (802.11n capable, 2.4Ghz only) airport express, my problem is that I've tried using it to extend my network and that brick wall, no matter how close I get the express to the room, the signal and throughput in that room becomes abysmal.
As you might imagine, brick is a lot like cement, and it will not allow much of the wireless signal through.
Regarding your Express, there is no such thing as a 3rd Generation model....yet. You likely have a 1st Generation AirPort Express. Check and confirm the Model No on the side of the Express. A 1st Gen model is A1264.
Here's my problem, I don't think the express supports "extending" a network from a wired network jack.
The Express can "extend" wirelessly, or using an Ethernet connection. The configuration for this is very simple, but post back if you need it.
The jack just seems to be shut off
Have you temporarily turned off the wireless on a laptop and tried to connect it using an Ethernet cable to the wall jack as a "test"?
If you can get a good Internet connection this way, then you know the Ethernet cabling and jack are working correctly.
On the other hand, if you cannot get an Internet connection on the laptop during this "test", then this indicates that the Ethernet cable or jack is not functioning correctly and the wiring will need troubleshooting before you can proceed any further.
I need to create a whole new wireless network in this room for this configuration to work?
AirPort Setup will take care of this for you automatically during the configuration of the AirPort Express.
If I have an apple TV connecting to the express and an AppleTV connecting to the extreme, will they both be visible when connected wirelessly to either network?
    Yes
Will I be able to connect to my network seemlessly?
    Yes
Post back after you have confirmed that the Ethernet cable and Ethernet jack are functioning correctly in the temporary "test" mentioned above.  Then, we will continue.

The ZyXEL P-2601HN-F1, as you know, is a combination DSL modem & 802.11n wireless router (or gateway device).
For your goal you will want to take a look at this Apple Support article for details on how to configure an AX for iTunes.
If you are still having difficulties with the AX joining the ZyXEL's wireless network, you can try the following:
    Temporarily disable wireless encryption.
If you are hidding the SSID, disable that feature.
Change the Mode Select setting to: 802.11g Only
Change the Channel Selection from "Auto" to a set channel, like 1, 6, or 11

  • Router Security Airport Express

I currently have a wired home network which is connected to a linksys router. I have also attached to this wired router an airport express router for the laptops in my home. I have read the express has a built in firewall, however I have it set to bridge mode.
Would it be more secure (harder to hack) if I set it to distribute IP address as well as the wired router?
In essence both routers distribute IP addresses separately.
    -Paul

First let me say that you are worrying needlessly. The odds of someone getting through the first router are extremely low.
What I am really trying to ask is that since the Airport express router has a static IP address, would it be easier to penetrate its built in firewall as opposed to the airport express distributing its own set of IP addresses dynamically?
You are talking about 2 different things which are unrelated. I think your question really is "Would it be more difficult to access the wireless clients from the Internet if the AX was configured to distribute IP addresses rather than having the AX act as a bridge?"
The answer is yes. It also means that any devices on your wired router would no longer be able to access file sharing or other service provided by the wireless clients. Also devices connected to the wired router would no longer be able to stream music to the AX nor use a printer attached to the AX.

  • Airport Express problems since iTunes 6

I'm running OS X 10.4.4, iTunes 6.0.2, and my Airport Express has V6.3 firmware.
iTunes will not reliably stream to my Airport Express. Although I can't remember exactly when the trouble began, it seems to have started since I upgraded to iTunes 6. Typically song will just stop playing, although iTunes shows the Play icon (but no advance in the time.) If I Pause and then Play again, I get a "connection refused" message. Sometimes I can just restart iTunes to make it play again. Sometimes I need to restart the Airport Express and Restart iTunes.
I've turned Interface Robustness on and off but have seen no difference. I have removed all Wireless devices from my the network (by power down) so that only the iMac, AE, and Wireless Router were on the network.
    Any ideas?

I have the exact same set-up but don't have any problems.
Have you tried 'Repairing Permissions'? That can sometimes fix these strange problems after installs of software.
If you need info on how to do it please ask.

  • Connection to airport express fails after iTunes 10.1.1.4 upgrade !

    Hi,
Before ugrading iTunes to V10.1.1.4, everything was OK and I was listening music from itunes through airTunes with my airport express V 6.3.
Since I've upgraded iTunes, when à play a song, I've the error msg "cannot connect to [airport express name]. network connection failure"
It's the second time, I've connection problems to airport express after an iTunes upgrade !
First time was just after uorgrade from iTunes 9 to iTunes 10.
I had to wait for a new iTunes upgrade to fix up the problem (nearly 1 month !)
I'm a bit angry with iTunes and that kind of problems just before christmas !
    Thanks for your help !

Yes, there's an exception for Bonjour in the firewall (Bonjour is allowed)
I've try to re-add the "APAgent" which control Airports and restart the firewall but it didn't worked...
The only solution I've found was to desactivate Windows firewall...
(Firewall of my ADSL box is activated).
Maybe I should try to repair iTunes Installation like WPLU...

  • Airport Express listed in Itunes, but can't connect  (error -6753)

I had to reset my router (Linksys) and Airport Express yesterday. Everything is reconfigured, with one exception. I have a green light on my AE and itunes lists it in the speaker selection bar, but it can't connect. I also cannot connect to the AE using the admin tool. The admin tool lists the AE, prompts me for the password then fails. In both cases (itunes and admin tool) error -6753 is reported.
    Any ideas?

When I configure the Airport to connect to my new Dlink modem/router, the Airport light goes green, I can see it in iTunes as an option to select but when I select it, the "connecting to Airport.." box appears but it doesn't connect. I don't get an error message.
I've also tried configuring with no network security on the router but this had the same effect.
I'm having the EXACT same problem as nick.
I spent some time talking with support about this and basically concluded that it was an issue with the router (D-Link DIR-625). However, I've exhausted efforts with opening ports and even put the airport in the DMZ...still nothing. I'm hoping someone has some new info on this that doesn't involve a new router or rearranging equipment throughout the house
