Help reseting iTunes so that it looks for songs again
I store my 4k+ songs on an external hard drive used only for that purpose. This works fine and gives me some comfort against a hard drive crash. Unfortunately, I recently opened iTunes when my external hard drive was off. iTunes went looking for the songs, did not find the external hard drive, and understandably marked them all as "missing." Now, the songs are all right where iTunes thinks that they are (now that I turned on the external hard drive - duh), if I could just get it to go look. Anyone know a way that I can do this easily (i.e., not going song by song and clicking on the file)?

Even if iTunes has once not found the files, it should updated this when you start you HD and the path that iTunes knew is available again.
Now your HD might have a different drive letter from the one it had when you imported song at first (ipod connected or another HD plugged before the one you use for your music that took the old letter of your music HD...
Either you find a way to re-set this letter (reboot with only this HD plugged or using any software like powerquest),
Or you ask iTunes to relocate the first missing songs and it may update others when you show the path for the first songs (I thinked it happened luckily to me once).
Now if you have chosen the folder that contain your music on your external HD as your "itunes music folder" under advanced preferences, you just have to update this by relocating the correct folder and everything should be sorted with your old information (playcount, rating...)

I have the same problem that others have posted about but with a bit of a twist. When I go to add iTunes music to my slideshow, it says to "open iTunes 6 or later to populate this list." I have tried the suggested Apple solutions but I think my "twist" is where the problem lies.
My iTunes library [and music] is stored on an external drive and accessed through my in-home network.
The one time I did manage to get iPhoto to pull up a library in iTunes showed a handful of songs and playlists that are probably still on the PowerMac hard drive. Is there a way to change the iTunes library that the iPhoto program is looking for?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. I cannot sync my iphone to my macbook since the highest software upgrade on it is 10.5.8. I cannot upgrade to the min. software necessary to upgrade to the itunes version that I need for the iphone 5! Please help!
The iPhone 5 requires iTunes 10.7 or later and iTunes 10.7 requires OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8). If your profile is correct it looks like you need to update your OS X on you Mac. You can contact Apple and purchase the software from them.

Please help me....I deleted a song on my itunes and then proceeded to sync my iphone. Itunes reflects that I deleted the song, but my the song still shows up on my iphone....it NEVER deletes. What do I do?

Forgive me for not fully understanding your question at first. I understand that you wish to actually delete the song from your iPhone, which is definitely possible, and I'd love to show you how.
Here is an excerpt from page 61 of the iPhone User Guide (for iOS 6.1 software)
So, in summary: Open the Music app, proceed to "Songs" view. Find the specific song, swipe either direction, and a delete button will appear.

i have missing songs that i purchased on my old iphone. they are not in my purchased folder. but in itunes store when i look the song up, it has the purchased logo next to it.... but no way to download it
If the songs are still on your ipod, make sure autosync is disabled in iTunes on your computer, connect and right click on it in the device list, then choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought media and apps from your ipod to your computer.
If the songs are not on your computer and got deleted from your ipod as well, you can't get them back, unless you have a backup of your iTunes library as part of your computer backup. -

My ipad 1 is stuck on IOS 4 as these IOS 5 update instructions do not work. When I use itunes update the software looks for an IOS 5 software update file and the apple site doesn't seem have one anywhere!
If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.0.1. For the iPad Mini the iOS is 6.0.2. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

Suddenly, after a year of good operation, my itunes seems to be looking for my library on my computer C drive, rather than the external drive it had been set up to as default How do I get it to search for the stored library on the external drive again ?
Quit iTunes.
On the external drive;
1 - Create new folder called iTunes (or whatever you want).
2 - Move your music folder into this.
3 - Go to the the C: drive iTunes folder.
4 - Copy the iTunes library.itl file into the iTunes folder on the external drive.
5 - Start iTunes holding the Shift key.
6 - Select Choose existing library and select the iTunes library.itl file you just copied to the external. -

Hi, I've purchased a few films from itunes (and they are listed as Purchased in my account), but I can't find them on my computer or my itunes account, and itunes wants me to pay for them again. How do I get around this? I've tried all the suggestions, and it's hugely frustrating.
If you are in the UK, and the film studio allows re-downloading, and you are signed in with the same account that you bought them with, then they might show under the Purchased link under Quinklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page for re-downloading - if they don't show then check to see if they are hidden (hiding and unhiding).
But you should be keeping and maintaining your own backup of your downloads and noy rely on being able to re-download any item as they are occasionally removed from the store by the content provider (film studio, tv company, record company etc). -

If you see an "error 4013" when you try to restore your iPhone, try these troubleshooting steps:
Error 4000, 4005, 4013, 4014, and 4016
After you perform each step, try to restore your device.
Restart your computer.
Disconnect all your USB devices from your computer and connect to another USB port.
Use a different USB cable.
Uninstall third-party security software.
Try restoring using an alternate computer.
