HELP! Restore complete but missing settings, contacts, etc.!!!

I had to swap out my iPhone at the Apple Store and backed up before I brought it in. Got a new iPhone (same model - 32 GB 3GS) and when I go to restore from the backup it says restore complete but EVERYTHING is missing - contacts, email, settings, etc.
Any help will be much appreciated!!!
Thanks,
Jonathan Cooper

I brought it back because the silence "switch" stopped responding. They gave me a refurb, and when I go to restore that backup I did previously, it takes FOREVER, says it finishes and then just puts the media on. No notes, mail, settings, contacts, photos. I tried doing an older backup from when I just had the 3G and it went faster and worked. I am scared that although it is not telling me this, that the backup I need is corrupted.

    Hello khanhlinh98,
I would recommend performing the following steps in order to stabilize your iPhone.
Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.
Check if a Liquid Contact Indicator (LCI) is activated or there are signs of corrosion. Learn about LCIsand corrosion.
Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen. Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.
My issue is still not resolved. What do I do next?

Contacts are in the supported application on the computer. On a Mac that is Address Book, on a Windows computer that is Outlook, Windows Contact depending on the version of OS you are using.

  • RetainDeletedItemsFor - Command completed but no settings of username have been modified.

    Group,
I'm trying to increase the retention days for deleted items on a single mailbox.  I run the command from the Technet site and it returns, "WARNING: The command completed successfully but no settings of '<user name>' have been modified."
I verified my account has the correct permissions but it doesn't want to work.  What am I missing?
    Thank you,
    Jason

David, His issue is not that he can change the setting even when it's not used - his issue is that even if he does change the UseDatabaseDefaults setting to False, he can't change the RetainDeletedItemdFor setting.  And you can change several
mailbox settings that are ignored without a warning or error - another example is that you can set a mailbox size limit even when the mailbox is set to use database defaults.
Well, Im not David, but regardless, I was referring to a *Permissions* issue when you typically receive an error, not changing a mailbox setting :)
But, I think we are taking about the same thing. That is why I asked above:
"By the way, once I set : -UseDatabaseRetentionDefaults $false, it worked,
but you stated that it doesnt work for you when set to $false?"
But I  dont want to create a lot of noise for the OP, so we can argue later over a beer :)
    Question for the OP:
If you run the following, does it work, Yes or no?
    set-mailbox <user> -RetainDeletedItemsFor 90:00:00:00 -RetainDeletedItemsUntilBackup $false -UseDatabaseRetentionDefaults $false
    ( Note the additional RetainDeletedItemsUntilBackup $false )

  • 3230 restore completes but there are no contacts i...

I have backed up my phone (3230) and erased all data. Now I am trying to restore the data but although everything else is restored (settings, sms, calendar etc), there are no contacts restored. It is the same phone, with the same firmware (no updates or anything). I have keeped the log that states that there are 324 contacts in the file and a hex editor confirms that there are my contacts inside this file. What is more when trying to restore only my contacts it completes the action instantly!

  • Need help restoring powerbook to factory settings w/out OS disks

My friend just bought a G4 Powerbook mostly due to my encouragement. This is why I feel responsible for resolving his issues. It doesnt seem to have been used very much but my friend wants a fresh clean start and would like to make a CD or DVD with their files to return to them in case they dont already have them. I know my way around computers for the most part but I claim complete ignorance regarding anything Apple other than my iPod and iTunes. I have spent quite a bit of time looking for the answers to my questions and it seems my lack of the original restore and install disk(s) will be the most difficult to overcome. Any and all pointers or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Please try and bear in mind I am used to PC terminology but eager to learn the mac equivelant and hope to switch very soon myself. Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Why are there no restore disks? All new Macs come with them. If they are missing, and it was bought new by that person, they can try to call AppleCare at the number here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
If the Mac was purchased used or refurbished, the seller should furnish the disks for the person. If they don't they should return the computer and buy it from a more reputable seller.
If the Mac is simply out of the country where the disks are located, my suggestion is to wait before they return before attempting to install any operating system software.

  • Need help Restoring iPod to factory settings

I have a new iPod 30G and somehow screwed things up trying to use Winamp to transfer files. I upgraded iTunes to 7 and when I start it up, it polls my iPod and I get this message:
iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "IPOD". Go to the Summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings.
The only problem is that my iPod doesn't show up on the left so I can't get to the preferences. I downloaded the iPod updater 6.28.06 but it won't work with iTunes 7, it says that iTunes 7 will do the updating. Uninstalled 7, went back to 6 and now the updater says it has an iPod service error. Have rebooted my PC. Have reset my iPod, have slept very little
Any help getting my iPod back to factory settings would be appreciated. BTW, my PC does recognize the iPod and I can browse the I: drive so I know it "should" work.
    Thanks in advance.

  • After having my hard drive replaced, I tried restoring files from time machine. The restore completed but I don't know where the files were restored to. I can see they are taking up space on my hard drive but I can't get at them.

My hard drive failed and so was replaced, luckily everything was backed up on time machine.
I tried to do a full restore, and it went through the process but I couldn't see my files anywhere on the HD. I tried again and same thing. Eventually I used Migration Assistant and this worked fine.
However my hard drive is now full - all my previous restores went somewhere but I can't get at them.
Can anyone please help, I need to delete them from my system.
    Thanks

Is the HDD in the 2009 15" MBP dead?  (The original source of your data)  If not, you might want ot take it out and put it in an enclosure.
You might try spotlight on know files to see if that gives you any clues where your data is located.
You might down load from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it.  It should show you all of the files you have on your MBP and enable to locate them.
    Ciao.

  • Restoring iphoto but missing files

I am restoring iPhoto photos from a backup CrashPlan and it apparently is missing files to actually PLAY the movies.
In the process of restoring, iPhoto said I had to update before I could restore my old photos.  I clicked on update.
Now it is "writing new iphoto library data."
However, I continually get messages that pop up saying, "The movie file "SANYO776.dv" cannot be found. Without this file, the movie cannot play properly. I have the option of "searching" or "cancelling."  I have to cancel because there is nothing on the computer to search yet.  When I  click on Cancel a message comes up "searching for movie data in file Clip 01.dv. I have to click on STOP, then the previous message comes up again, I click on Cancel.  It continually repeats about 4-6 times with EACH movie it is searching for.
Is there a way to set iPhoto to do the SAME PROCEDURE when it can't FIND a file??? Just cancel it? I know that can be done when you're putting in duplicate photos.  IPhoto will show a message where you can check to do the same procedure on duplicate photos.
I'll never get 9 hours worth of photos restored having to click on STOP and CANCEL 4-6 times for EVERY video that I've ever recorded since 2007.
This restore process really is quite impossible.  I'm not sure I'd recommend doing a RESTORE files to a computer.  Might as well start from scratch.  I may never accomplish this.

A Volume is a Hard Disk, or a partiton on a Hard Disk.
Hard Disks can be structured in different ways to hold the data, and iPhoto requires a Disk/Volume that is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). If the library is on a disk with a different format then the data won't be stored in an appropriate structure.
I'm 99.999% certain that Crashplan's server is not formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). VIrtually no servers are.
So, when you write the iPhoto Library to that server the data is not structured properly, and that's why you have problems when you restore.
It should be noted that ordinary files won't have a problem, in this sense they are Mac compatible. But an iPhoto Library is not an ordinary file. It's a complex ecosystem of interlinked databases, caches, metadata files plus you images. This is also true of Aperture and 3rd party apps like DevonThink Office and so on.
The best you can hope to do is get everything down from Crashplan first, and then see about cleaning up the mess.

  • Desperately in need of help restoring my photos from iPhone 3G!

    Hello All,
This is the first time I've ever posted a question on the Internet and I am desperate.  I would go to an Apple Genius bar tomorrow if there was one near me...I really need to know if there is any way to restore the photos, list of contacts, etc. that I had stored on my iPhone 3G before I updated to iOS6.  I had hundreds of photos of my kids on my phone, then synced to my PC before updating.  I hadn't backed up anything, and am obviously not computer savvy at all and thought that the warning I saw meant that I needed to sync, not backup.  Are the photos gone forever?
I've been looking at the message boards but can't find the exact answer.  If someone could please help me I would be most appreciative.
    Thank you so much.
PS - I also don't know what happened to the Apps I had...Shazam is gone and I'd really like it back.  YouTube app also gone.  All my music is gone too.  I want to cry.

I found the following advice on one of the communities but it sounds a bit complicated and I'm wondering if this would work for me (not sure since I didn't backup).  Any thoughts?

Hey guys, i found a solution for our problem, at least it worked for me.
1- Download Iphone Explorer (does not need to be a jailbroken device) http://www.macroplant.com/iphoneexplorer/
2.) connect your iphone using the usb cable
    3.) launch iphone explorer
4.) backup and then delete the following files:
    /Media/PhotoData/MISC/Info.plist
    /Media/PhotoData/Photos.sqlite (or /PhotoData/Photos.sqlite)
    /Media/PhotoData/PhotosAux.sqlite (or /PhotoData/PhotosAux.sqlite)
    5.) reboot your iphone
After you reboot your device, windows will prompt if you wan to open your iphone on windows explorer as usual. After you open it, your photos are going to be there, just like it was before update.

  • ITunes is saying I have to do a recovery on my iPhone 4, but doing so will restore factory settings and I'll lose photos, contacts, etc. The phone is completely frozen and I can't do anything else. Help!

I plugged my phone into my laptop this morning and it started doing an update. I walked away from my desk, came back and had an error message and a prompt saying my phone is in recovery mode and needs to be restored. But when I click "ok" to do that it says it will restore the factory settings and I'll lose all media, data and contacts. I DON'T want to do that--the whole reason I plugged my phone in this morning was to download some new photos, so I can't lose them!
The phone isn't working...it's showing a usb connector pointing to an iTunes icon.
    Help!!!

If your phone is in recovery mode, you've already lost all data on the phone...its gone. Your only option now is to restore the phone, either from backup or as a new device.

  • I was trying to sync my iPhone 3GS and it is now stuck, saying I'm in recovery mode.  I am thoroughly confused now after researching online.  I'm scared to restore to original settings as I don't want to lose everything, apps, contacts, etc. Help!

I was trying to sync my iPhone 3GS and it is now stuck, saying I'm in recovery mode.  I am thoroughly confused now after researching online.  I'm scared to restore to original settings as I don't want to lose everything, apps, contacts, etc. Help!  Is there a way to get it all back if I do restore?? Can I my stuff back through iCloud??

Bad news first and we hope for good news as well
The device is in Recovery Mode and the data has already been deleted, you need to restore the device with iTunes in order to get the iPhone back into a working state
When the iPhone is restored you can then restore it from your latest backup using iTunes or iCloud and regain some, if not all, of your data.
The good news part only happens if you had a backup.
