Help! Run Away!

Need help! Have a problem thats been going on for ages, been out exploring the world for the past 6 weeks so now need to get this sorted.
My system keeps freezing up as its loading, originally it would freeze up around the XP loading screen (the blue bar bit), now its freezing up around the time the big AGP 8x Graphic shows (pretty soon after switching on). Unfortunately im unsure of what model mother board this is, if someone can tell me how to identify it I can tell you that info tomorrow (Im at work).
Is my motherboard f00ked or is there hope still?

So I was wondering...I want to get an Audigy sound card. Is the original Audigy a good performer? If you're into 2.1 sound like me, does it make any real difference over the k8t onboard sound?

anyway, i would stay away from audigy 1 series they seem to have driver glitches, and erase eproms ..the zs series seems to be stomping on my core center and live update...but i didn't have problems with an audigy 2...that said there are other types of sb's but i am not sure on those..there was one person who gave up on thier audigy 1 and got a turtlebeach, and they were very happy with that said it installed smooth and sounded good. i had tried some other mad dog 7.1, revolution or somthing like that ...stay away from that..it sucked bigtime was terible to install, and sounded lousy

Run away process

Can anyone tell me way to find what a particular user is doing up the unix process id as shown in the the v$process view. eg joining it with v$session and anything else which might help me

First of all this is not called "run away process". Not sure where you got the term.
It's not a good idea to recompile a package while other sessions are using it. However the other sessions should recognize the changes after the package been recompiled.
There're a few DDL locks involved here,
Oracle will place an Exclusive DDL Locks on target package to make sure other session will not compile the same package at the same time.
Oracle will also place Share DDL Locks on all referenced tables and other objects to make sure they are not changed during the compile.
In your "other" sessions that calling this package they all have Breakable Parse Locks on the package. So that the associated shared SQL area can be invalidated if a referenced object is altered or dropped. In your case recompiled.
In another words, whenever you recompiled the package, these Breakable Parse Locks are broken, Oracle will know the old SQL area for the package is invalidated. The session need parse the package again.

REGEXP_LIKE runs away when pattern is not found

I am using the following in my pl/sql code:
regexp_like(l_formatted, '^[\_]*([a-z0-9]+(\.|\_*)?)+@([a-z][a-z0-9\-]+(\.|\-*/.))+[a-z]{2,6}$')
It validates e-mail addresses. When the pattern is found (the e-mail is valid) the performance is fine. When the pattern is not found the query takes at least 50 seconds and in a few cases has actually "run away". Has anyone else exprienced this problem?

In some cases you can also index regex with FBI's. But regular expression are notorious for causing full-table scans on multi-million rows tables, and special care must be given to creating matching function-based indexes to keep performance at an acceptable level.
From a performance perspective it’s important to properly index the Oracle tales so that regular expression validation does not cause problematic full-table scans. Oracle syntax allows the use of function-based indexes (FBI’s) to minimize the amount of database I/O associated with a invocation of a regular expression.
Function-based indexes cannot work for all regular expressions, however, and it can be tricky to remove unnecessary full-table scans on some regular expressions, especially regexp_like.

Ah, but there's this caveat:
Apple will continue to evaluate the repair data and will provide further repair extensions as needed.
And a number of folks have found sympathetic managers and had the 2008 logic boards replaced, even after four years.

ESSBASE V9 run away query

Hi
I have noticed that if you use a calc script to export your database from a Block storage cube, you can create a run away query. I was missing a parameter and ran a query to export some data - it just kept running, even after I tried to terminate it. is there a way to stop the query without having to bring down the server?

I would doubt that the data could of caused this issue, I would of thought the problem would lie down to either metadata changes or the database compression changing.
If you want to start the database up again, first make sure there is no ghost esssvr process running, if the database crashed it could leave a ghost process running and it will stop the database starting again, kill the process try again.
If it doesn't work you could restore the db from backup.
Or if you want to just clear the data, delete the ess**.pag ess*.ind and .esm files and start up the application, then reload the data.

check it please whether it is a database version or just you are installing a client. Install Enterprize database on 2k system. I you are running a client software then you are to deinstall it.

Stopping a "run-away" request

What is the best way to stop a "run-away" request from a JSP? Say the User has a page from which he can issue a request. For example, say that the request performs a database query and returns a list of objects. If the system performance is slow, and the User is tired of waiting for a response, how may the applicaiton be designed to terminate a request to permit the User to issue a new request that is more granular and refined in its scope, and which will presumably run more quickly? Can one place a stop button on the form? Are there any threading issues in terms of the functionality with the stop button to be able to terminate the previous request that is "in-flight" with respect to the middle tier or the host?
Does killing the browser session (which causes the client to lose connectivity to the middle-tier) automatically stop the request?
Does pressing the stop button in the browser have the same effect?

We are running the JSP in an IFrame within the browser, and I have noticed that pressing the browser's stop button has no effect on the JSP.
Even if we could get this to work, I am not sure if it will cause the process on the middle-tier to stop consuming resources.

Pages Running Away

Pages runs away (the process takes up approx 98% CPU).
This causes it to be unresponsive, and to exit it, it must be force quit.
The last thing I installed was the newest version of growl (v1.2), including growl mail and growltunes.
No idea what is causing it.
Additionally, earlier today the screen went "blocky" when entering my password to wake up from sleep.

Firstly do some computer maintenance like Repair permissions, weekly scripts etc. Trash junk! Do restart the computer once in a while.
Trash Pages preferences, com.apple.iwork.pages.plist in User > Library > Preferences.
Does Keynote and Numbers behave better? Does Pages behave better when used in another account?

Exactly which release of CC7.x are you on? One bug in this vein was fixed in 7.1, but another case remains that we haven't been able to reproduce in-house.

Run Away/Locked Computer - Need Help

I have a vexing problem that I do not understand how to fix. I am not much of a computer expert; so, I would really appreciate help from one of you experts.
PROBLEM: Whenever I make any changes to iCal my iMac fan soon starts to run very loudly and the iMac soon virtually locks up.
DIAGNOSTICS: To better understand what is occurring, I used the Activity Monitor. When I make a change in iCal two programs appear on the Activity Monitor. First iCalExternalSync appears and shortly thereafter SyncServer appears.
When iCalExternalSync appears it captures over 70% of the CPU, grabs about 120 MB of real memory, and the fan begins running VERY loudly. After an additional few minutes, SyncServer appears. Shortly thereafter iCalExternalSync reduces CPU usage to less than 5% (but keeps the 120 MB of real memory) and SyncServer now takes about 80% of the CPU and about 130 MB of memory. If I allow the process to progress this far, the fan is Very loud and the iMac has become unresponsive.
TEMPORARY FIX: I can return the iMac to operational status by killing iCalExternalSync and SyncServer via the Quit Process command in the Activity Monitor.
HELP REQUESTED: Given the information provided, I would appreciate any suggestions about how to fix this problem.

You don't mention what you are actually syncing with.
Are you using iSync to sync with a locally connected third-party mobile phone or PDA?
Or are you using *MobileMe Sync* to sync to the MobileMe "cloud" and/or another Mac/iPhone/iPod touch?

Help Running Faster Please!

I am completely new to Mac. By father mailed my wife and I his old iMac flat panel. Looks sharp but it is running so slow. What can I do to clean up the system or whatever it may take to get it running at its peak efficiency? A whole lot of delays (even when I am typing on Word), a lot of spinning beach ball, and internet is really slow. Thanks for those that can take the time to help.

You may have to find out what the computer has for hard drive free space
(unused drive capacity) by single-clicking on the Macintosh HD icon and
use Get Info from in the Finder's File menu, that should show that item's
capacities and used/free space. It should not be more than about 80%
full; or about 20% or more free space should be available to the system.
Also, while not running in an application, the desktop says Finder in the
menubar near the Blue apple on the left side; beneath that apple, the
menu column's first item is About this Mac. You can go into there and
see how much RAM is installed, and go further by clicking on "More Info"
to see the Apple System Profiler.
Could be the hard drive is way full, and or maybe the RAM needed to
run the computer operating system and applications is underfunded;
so if there is only 512MB of RAM or 256MB, you can post back and
say what you find out about that computer.
You may see if running Disk Utility from inside the Utilities folder can
help; the easiest way to go into that folder is find it under "Go" in the
Finder menu; and choose Utilities Folder. When you find the icon in
that folder that says Disk Utility on it, do yourself a favor, single click
on it, to highlight the name, and then use the cursor to click ahead of
the first letter D in the disk utility, and then use the space bar, and click
the space bar twice; then click next to the Disk Utility icon to make the
highlight go away. Now, the D.U. item will always appear at the top of
the Utilities Folder, ahead of the alphabetical order. Now, you can very
easily find it as the first thing in the folder, once you open it.
In Disk Utility, click on the icon item named the same as the computer's
hard drive (this originally would be "Macintosh HD") and then a different
window opens and you can now choose to click on "Repair Disk Permis-
sions" and let it do that; later on, when it finally is done, quit Disk Utility
and close all open folders. Many users find running Disk Utility before
and after any software installs and system updates helps it work better.
If the computer has sufficient free hard drive space, and 512MB of RAM
installed or more, you may need to see if you can make the internet
work better; and then try to get and install a free downloadable utility to
try and clear system caches, run crons, and do a few other basic things
that may not have been done in that machine for a long time, if ever.
I use a free utility called OnyX from Titanium Software; there is a version
of this for Panther 10.3 (your system) as well as Jaguar and Tiger OSX.

Hopefully these ideas can be sorted out and used to solve that situation;
and it may be that you also may need to consider a new system or other
reinstall of whatever you have for software; the retail Panther 10.3 disc
can be used to run a bootable on disc version of Disk Utility and that will
also allow some other repairs to be done on the computer's hard drive.
I'd hold off on any new system install of Panther if there isn't at least
a reasonable minimum free space on that computer's hard drive, etc.

Help - running out of time (Simulator vs. Burn)

Quick background: running DVDSP 2.0 on 10.3.9, upgraded to 10.4.5 and DVDSP 2.0 (still). I did a clean install of DVDSP 2.0 back on 10.3.9, but problem still exists.
Basically, I am using a Layered menu, everything works correctly inside DVDSP's Simulator but once a DVD or a DVD Image file (that is played in Apple DVD Player) is created, none and I mean NONE, of the links or connections work. I have deleted the PAR folder, deleted all of the connections and recreated them and I have even created a completely new project from scratch. But the same problem persists, which is that none of the links work outside of DVDSP. The Menu show correctly, I can select the Button properly, but the Button will not play the linked video.
I have been making reels for our company for 8 months, I have never run into this problem. Existing projects, that use to work, done anymore. They end up with the same problem.
Could there be a setting that I have missed, that was set back to the default during the upgrade? That could explain why a new install back on 10.3.9 would be experiencing the same problem and why old projects (that use to work) don't anymore. BUT WHAT COULD IT BE? I AM AT A LOSS AND PEOPLE KEEP ASKING ME WHEN WILL IT BE FINISHED.

Without knowing a bit more about how you have set the layers up for your menu it is a bit hard to tell... but one thing to try is to make a standard menu and simply add a button to it (i.e. click on add menu then drag out a rectangle on the editor) add some text and set up a target for the button to go to. If this button works then there is not too much wrong with the linking within DVDSPs abstraction layer... the problem will be in the way you have constructed your menu.

I have some artwork im doing for screen printing and a friend has been sending me some artwork to work on. The problem we are having is some of the artwork will open in Illustrator or CorelX4 and stay editable but then he will send me some that when I open in Illustrator it gives me this message and then will not be editable:

Can anyone tell us why this is happening??? I have researched this with no answers so far??? He is using PSD2 and Im usin PSD4 and Illustrator4

Photoshop is capable of saving files that are 16 or 32 bit depth. This has to do with the amount of colors that are accessable. The message you are seeing is telling you that it will convert the file back to 8 bit color space for you. This bit depth is talking about per channel, not over all. So a cmyk file would have 8 bits for cyan, 8 for megenta, 8 for yellow and 8 for black. Having a higher amount of bits per channel, photoshop is then capable of doing things like smoother gradients, retreiving data from raw images to produce an image that shows more highlights and shadows without the clipping and so forth.
Most basic monitors are only 8 bit, same goes for most printers. So unless you need to access the extra color depth, you should be fine in 8 bit. If you don't want to see this message, just tell your friend to send the images at 8 bit.
