HELP - SAFARI & FIREFOX SUPER SLOW!!!!!

hi there,
the whole thing happened about three weeks ago. I have a mac book pro and it works perfectly fine not considering my f#$%#%% internet!!! all my browsers (safari & firefox) take about 4 to 5 minutes to open a site, if they do at all it is not my wifi network or the router as I have tried at least 5 different wifi networks of my friends. my girlfriends ibook g4 is 100 times faster than my power book which is close to be smashed against the next wall. I had my mac for over two years and this is the first time that I have such problems with it.
please help me or my mac, it is a matter of live or death, well for my mac anyway
thanx

The following usually works on both Tiger and Leopard:
(First, if yours is an Intel Mac, check that Safari is not running in Rosetta, which is enough to slow it to a crawl.)
Many, including me, have had success with adding DNS codes to their Network Settings, with good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
form values
download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
com.apple.Safari.plist
Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.

  • Universal Firefox super slow

I have recently downloaded the Universal version of Firefox for my iMac and it seems to have slowed the whole system. The whole system has been slowed since I installed it (even when its not running!).
    Any ideas/suggestions for this?
Also it has lowered my network speed (iChat, Safari, iTunes all take much longer to load or just have problems connecting). I know this is not a network problem because my eMac and windows machines are not affected. All network settings appear unchanged.
    Ideas/Suggestions?
Some other information that might help...
I have run Norton Anti-virus/live update to no avail
I have run Onyx clean-up and optimization also to no avail.
    Any help or comments welcomed.
    Thanks,
    CTH

Cold boot your machine, open your usual apps (including Firefox of course), play around a bit, then open your activity monitor. I'd like to see what Norton's doing to your machine, and I'm assuming you are running the UB version. In my experience, Norton's a system hog and I've gone as far as to call it a "virus" in and of itself. I'll just give you one review, although there are thousands out there to read:
"In my (considerable) experience of maintaining a variety of Macs for an office -- I have found that Norton AntiVirus CAUSES more problems than it pretends to prevent or resolve. It scatters crap all over the directory, is intrusive, pervasive, and INEFFECTIVE. Causes crashes, slows access, and its 'update' feature causes pure **** in a real production environment -- even with broadband."
Having said that, I'm also finding the UB of Firefox to be a bit sluggish, but it certainly is not impacting my overall productivity or connectability. Ditch Norton completely and you might find your overall connectivity issues are resolved.
Also, although the FF interface looks a little clunky in this version, the themes you can apply below go along way towards improving it:

  • IPhone running super slow after upgrading to SO5

i took it to the apple store and they told me to back up everything and then try restoring.  I did, and has made no difference.  all apps run SUPER slow.  safari is SUPER slow.  so frustrated.

Did you try a Restore as New...
Backup and Set Up as New Device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
Try this First... You will Not Lose Any Data...
Turn the Phone Off... ( if it isn’t already )
Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button and the Home Button at the Same Time...
Wait for the Apple logo to Appear and then Disappear...
Usually takes about 15 - 20 Seconds... (But can take Longer...)
    Release the Buttons...
    Turn the Phone On...

  • Help!? - my mac book pro 10.6.8 is super slow. Word, ppt - all including firefox

    hi
my 10.6.8 mac book pro is super slow.
the MacHD icon says under it:  499.76 GB, 264.56gb free.
It is running with 2.26 GHz intel core 2 duo.
    memory: 4GB 1067 Mhz DDR3.
This happened a year or so ago, but I can't remember what I/we  did to get it moving again.
    The moving ball takes ages.
I am now working with only one thing open at a time, but it is still very slow. I use firefox, ppt, word, photoshop.
I see I have bootcamp in my apps - is that something I should open/use?
    any help would be great

If you are not using TeamViewer, remove it also. If you had it running while you ran Etrecheck, then it doesn't need to be removed.

  • Safari and other aplications super slow after update to Snow Leopard. Installed the update combo and nothing happened, still super super slow. Any tips to solve this?

After updating to Snow Leopard (to install Lion later), Safari and other aplications became super super slow and Preview is not working properly, I can't print anything that was opened with Preview. Already installed the Combo update, nothing happened, Safari still taking hours to load any site. I honestly regret downloading Snow Leopard, the older version worked so much better... Hope Lion is smarter than Snow Leopard...

  • SSD and HDD Installed but it runs super slow? Please Help!

Hi, I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro 2.2 GHZ Intel Core i7
8gb of ram. My hard drive died in my mac and I decided to replace it with an SSD and installed an HDD in the optical bay following Ifixit instructions. I booted into internet recovery and installed Mountain Lion (as it would not let me do a straight Yosemite install from a flash drive I had made on my gf's macbook, because it couldn't authenticate). After booting up and declining the usual iCloud prompts, I rebooted and installed Yosemite from the USB. It took a while, but eventually i booted up.
I moved my home folder to the HDD a 7200rpm Western Digital Black, which is in the optical bay, (the SSD is a Samsung 340 Pro and is installed in the Drive bay). Everything appears to be functioning, but it's slower that it had ever been using Yosemite on the HDD that had died. It take 35-40 seconds just to open System Preferences. I have used First aid on both drives via the Recovery and repaired permissions on both. I have reset the ram using option-command-r-p. I have booted into Safe Mode and Restarted the computer multiple times. Just opening a second safari window causes the spinning wheel to go for ten seconds or so. If anyone knows anything I can do, please help! I'm at a loss as to what I can do to fix this.
I'm really not sure what is going on. It seems to take a very long time to load a website, but after using safari for a bit, the app doesn't seem to have a problem responding to commands, just takes way too long to load anything. System preferences is all of a sudden crazy snappy, but is giving me the spinning rainbow wheel when I try and click on a pane saying "Could not load Users & Groups preference pane." After I click "okay" and try again it loads right up. Grrr.

    Etrecheck report if it helps:
    Problem description:
Running super slow randomly with a newly installed SSD and HDD.  Home Folder is on the HDD.

  • Google tool bar search super slow... due to Safari 4???

    aloha kakou,
so ever since i installed safari 4 my web browsing has been less than pleasant... but i did some research and found how to uninstall safari 4 and reinstall safari 3 using this discussion http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2035320&start=0&tstart=0 using posts from orca_bay (tanks buddy)... (WARNING!!! do not use the terminal method if you are not comfortable with it... one typo will create hours of trouble shooting... i speak from experience hahahhaa)
although moving to safari 3 has resolved most of my problems/personal preference one still exsists... its a minor problem which i have already found a work around for but, i just want my damned safari to work the way it used to... so here is the problem...
problem: using the google search tool bar in safari is suuuuuuper slow!!! new searches always time-out and if re-entered take at least 10 seconds to return a result... i know its minor but super annoying... i am wondering if there is a way to reset the way the tool bar accesses the site??? idk anything would help...
*here is the work around i found:* don't use the google toolbar for search... if i go to google.com and perform a search it works just fine...
*here are things i have tried to remedy problem:* re-installing safari 3.2.3, resetting safari
alright folks... thanks for reading this post and i apologize if there are post about this... just so you know i have looked and couldnt find anything... and if you could kindly point to the post instead of telling how dumb i am i would appreciate that as well... hopefully someone can help me...

There are a few things you can try:
Add DNS server codes to your Network panel. Inefficient codes from your Internet Provider (usually these guys are PC oriented) can slow Safari down. Here's how to do it in Tiger:
Go to the System Preferences>Network panel
-Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the location drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
-Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Depending on whether you use Ethernet or Airport (wireless) for your setup: check the one you use and move it to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply". Everything else ought to be unchecked unless you use a Bluetooth device.
-Back to the "Show" menu, select either "Ethernet" or "Airport" (whichever applies to you). Click on the TCP panel. There, enter (copy/paste on separate lines) 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 in the DNS servers box - these are Opensource DNS codes and select "apply".
Next step: Trashing cache and history type files:
In the Finder: Your User Account>Library:
Caches>move the Safari folder to the trash
Caches>Metadata>move the Safari folder to the trash
Safari folder: move the History.plist file to the trash
Restart Safari. Let me know if that speeds things up, especially eliminating the lag in Google Search.
I have found Safari 4.0.1 to be very fast, especially after using the above DNS codes, and making sure any 3rd party add-ons were up-to-date.

  • Safari super slow. entire internet slow.

Ok... So i've owned my new macbook for about 2 months now. Within these 2 months I have been contected to the internet via my ethernet cable with verizons dsl.
The internet was at a good speed, but it always could be better, a little faster. Especially compared to my old HP laptop with Windows XP.
Well, a few days ago i bought a Belkin Wireless router so I can go wireless at home. I easily set this new device up and was online wirelessly. (i've owned a previous belkin wifi router before and had no problems.
Now... when im online wirelessly, the internet is super slow. sites like youtube.com take forever to load. the videos on that site only load to about 1/4th the entire length. other sites just take a while to load, like ebay.com---especially apple.com
so i decided to connect my ethernet cable again to my macbook and try that again. now even with the ethernet cable, my internet is still slow.
this needs to change. as im sure you can relate, when a problem occurs when dealing with your computer, it can drive you bonkers.
i would be calling applecare right now for help but its really late right now.
    ALSO!
Ever since i set up the wifi, ichat has not been working properly. i'll sign on and remain signed on but according to all my friends, on their computers it states i have signed off. i'll even attempt to write to them, send it, but they dont receive it.
one last thing. im not sure if this is due to this whole internet/wireless/router/ethernet thing.... but.... some of my applications take a little while to open. not too long but is noticeable.
    Thank You.

    HI
My problem relates to this topic but I have an added aggrivation.
I connect via wi-fi...and have been for 9 months. When I turn on my Mac and open safari...all seems fine for the first 5 or 6 pages pages I navigate to but then it slows to a snails pace and then just stops.
It will then open the network diagnostics page and it ends up with me going through the routine and the messsage saying I am connected to the internet and that maybe I typed the incorrect internet address.
I am having to type this email from work as I cannot even get as far as the mac site on my MAC
(last night I took it to the MAC clinic and in the store it all seemed to function normally) the minute I got home same problem
I was advised to us camino as my preferred browser but when I tried to download it it was downloading at 2kp/s with a download time of 3 hrs....this seems archaic!
Please if anyone can offer some advice
    Thanks
    Gavin

  • Super Slow Safari 4.1.2

I had a message today that Firefox needed upgrading, after I upgraded, Safari was extremely slow. I decided to shut down and restart. There was a message that Safari settings had been changed and I elected not to keep the new settings. I have uninstalled Firefox, to use, reinstalled it, still no improvement, checked the System preference login utilities-nothing but Skype and Microsoft AU Daemon, Itunes Helper. The activity monitor only shows Safari being active. I looked for software updates and found none. Any idea how to get Safari moving again?

Hi BigElsie, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
If that is 20 GB or more then I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply

  • Latest update has my safari/firefox running very slow

I did the latest software update Monday night, and now my safari and firefox are very slow to load. I have raised the memory storage to 100 MB, tried the proxy thing (didn't work, so I put it back to where it was), tried clearing the cache, and I don't know what to do. I have a router with specific numbers, so I can't change that on the TCP thing.
    Please help.

I added the DNS numbers and safari is working, but what about my slow Firefox?
Your system uses DNS for its internet connection, so if it helps Safari it should have the same effect on Firefox. If Firefox is having problems when Safari is not, that's a problem specific to that program and you might want to pursue that on the forums dedicated to its support.

  • I experienced the same prob with Yosemite where my screen went black on startup. I was able to "fix" it and log into my qccount but my mac is running super slow now even just at simple clicks and commands. How can I fix this? Help please!

I updated to Yosemite and everything worked great for a few days until earlier. My mac was plugged to my TV via HDMI wen everything hanged. I did a hard reset and the screen was just black during startup. There were the startup sounds but no images from the screen. it did have images at one point where it gave me options to reset my password. I did a couple of hard reboots and pressed Alt/Option or Cmd+Option+P+R based on previous posts. Didnt know which w but I was able to access my account and log in. My big problem right now is that my Mac became super slow. Even at the simple commands/clicks

My mac was okay up until a few hours ago. If anyone knows how to fix this, would really appreciate your help. Thank you!

  • Unable to Search. Windows Automatically close...Safari, Firefox, AND Chrome!?! Pls help!!

    Hello everyone,
I am so frustrated right now. I don't know what is wrong with my mac. I have this issue on Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. Have tried disabling all extensions, have never set parental controls (I'm an adult).
Sometimes I can browse for and successfully access adult websites without any issues, but sometimes this odd thing happens where I will type "p0rn" (without the 0) into Google and immediately the window or tab will close on me. Else, if I type in less specific words and come onto an adult site, WHAM it will close again!!!
I really have no clue what the issue is. I have never installed any adult filtering software on my computer, and have no interest in doing so. Lately I have been waching more **** than in the past, and I have moved around 5 times in the past couple years so am not sure when this issue began exactly.
    It is really frustrating though.
PLLLLLSSSS does anyone have a solution??
    Thank you!!

    Hi everyone,
    I solved the problem.
I had an unrelated software I had downloaded to block other websites called Website Blocker, but had misplaced it a while back. I'm not sure why sometimes it activated, and other times not, but the problem is solved.
I am sorry for posting this. I hope it helps if someone else finds his or herself in a similar dilemna.

If You Think iOS 7 Feels Slow Here’s How to Speed It Up
    http://osxdaily.com/2013/09/23/ios-7-slow-speed-it-up/
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7-8 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7-8 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

ebay will not load on safari, firefox or camino, but all other sites load without any problems. Why is this? Can anyone help?

It should be: Click on Home Folder (the House) and to the right Library is shown, click on the arrow on the Library folder to reveal its contents and then click on Cookies to reveal its contents and then move the Cookies.plist to the Trash as Carolyn suggests.
    Then try eBay again.
