Help: Satellite A215-S5808 Shut Downs

Help:  My Satellite A215-S5808 will shut down sporadically during usage.  I have upgraded the BIOS as suggested but to no avail it continues to happen.  I have even done a full system restore and continue to have the same problem.
When my notebook shuts down, it just goes down without any warning.  I can have only been on the laptap for as little as a 1/2 an hour or for as long as 6 hours.  It can be pretty frustrating as I taking online classes.  When I go to power back up at first it would power back up pretty quickly when pressing the power button, but here lately it seems to be taking longer (meaning I have to wait a few minutes before attempting to power back up).  The other day I heard a clicking as I was trying to power up.
Anyway....I am wanting to replace my CPU to see if that is the problem, and would like to do an upgrade of the CPU when replacing.  I have searched and searched but don't know what I should be getting to replace my:
AMD 64x 2 dual core TK-55 1.8 Ghz, 512 kb L2 cache 1600 mHZ processor.
I would greatly appreciate someone's assitance.
Thanks in advance - Rachel

You hear ticking when you try to boot?  This and the slow progression of symptoms makes me think this is more likely the hard drive failing than the CPU.  Processors are pretty hardy unless they're in a machine that lets them overheat.
I'd do an HD diagnostic w/ Seatools.
If you really want to upgrade your CPU anyway, you might be able to use the TL-66.  Specs and pins are a match, but double check that.  Honestly, not sure it would be worth the trouble, with the of cost of better systems with iCores at the moment...

  • Satellite A215 - computer shuts down at random

I own a Satellite A215-S6804, and I've had it for about a year and a half.  The past six months or so, I'll be in the middle of doing something and the screen goes completely black.  It often happens when I play one of the Windows games (like Spider Solitaire), but it has happened when I play a video from the Internet, also.  I know it's not just the light in the monitor, because I can't see anything if I look close enough, and if music is playing at the time, it completely stops.  It appears as though the computer shuts down but the screen stays on.  I also have had the laptop plugged in with the battery in, but within the last month or so decided to take the battery out while it was plugged in (this made no difference; the problem still persists).  What's happening to my laptop?

This has been happening to me recently.  Twice this eveing.  What is happening?  How do we fix it?  Or is something dying in it?   dinkysews

    Hi
Believe me; its not easy to say exactly why the BSOD appears.
Generally it happens because of the serious software malfunction or hardware fault.
Did you use the OS from the Toshiba image?
There message says something about sysaudio.sys.
This file is a system audio WDM filter process and its a part of Windows OS. It controls the hardware like printer or graphic card on a lower level.
Note: The virus uses such files as a camouflage. You should use always a anti virus application.
Furthermore you have suggested that the notebook shuts down after 5 min.
Well, this sounds like a overheating issue. How did you use the notebook? You should know that the free space around the notebook is very important because of the air circulation. The ventilators should be also free.
I you use the notebook in the right position and this will happen again so I would recommend asking the Toshiba service partner for the help. They should check the notebook.

    > At all: I won't by me another Toshiba again. A company who is using these bad/cheap optical drives? No way. To use these poor/cheap stuff and act like: no firmware/support, ask the manufacturer and the manufacturer say, of course, ask Toshiba... is this a way to threat customers?!?
That's your personal opinion but I don't agree with you... I've got my second Toshiba notebook and never had any problems...
But try other notebooks from different manufacturers and you will see that you will not be free of any hardware problems...
I know what I'm talking about... I used and tested notebooks from different manufacturers and had to fight always with some issues...

Finally some words regarding your issue:
Should clean the ventilators using an compressed air spray and should remove some dust and debris usually this helps to decreases the internal temperature.
Furthermore you should ensure that the ventilators are free!

Yours would not appear to be a US model. We need the Part Number for your laptop, like PSAG8U-05K02C. You can find this on the Toshiba label on the bottom of your laptop. As well, what country was it originally purchased in. In addition, what is your operating system version, like Windows Vista 32bit?

  • Help! My computer shuts down semi-unexpectedly.

Please somebody help! My computer shuts down semi-unexpectedly. I say 'semi' unexpectedly, cos, by now it seems an accident waiting to happen ONLY when I play a 3D game.
Now, whenever I play a 3D game there's a good chance the computer just shuts itself down, without ANY warning. Can be within 5 minutes, can be after an hour, it sometimes doesn't happen at all.
After this the computer will not start up at all, and the D-bracket tells me the processor is the culprit. At first I waited a while (+/- one hour) and the thing would start up again as if nothing happened.
After it started happening more frequently (or maybe I should say, 'after it didn't go away by itsself') I just didn't wait, but tried to find out what went wrong, and how to fix it.
All I have learned so far is that if -after a 'radical shutdown'- I release the levers on my processor's heatsink, and wiggle it a bit, then refasten them the computer will start up again, no problem. But ONLY if I disconnect the powercable from my machine ENTIRELY first.
I'm don't have the technical knowledge myself to make anything out of this, and am at my wit's end by now.
    My specs:
    mobo: 865PE-NEO2
    mem: 512MB Pc3200 dual channel
    processor: PIV 2.4GhZ
    video: Radeon9700PRO
    PSU: 400W
    Also:
    - All BIOS frequencies are at default
    - Got six ventilators in a case that is always open.
    - Got Corecenter running in the background with very tight temperature alert settings.
    - I have no other problems with my computer, and I do not overclock.
All this at least leads me to believe it's not a power-, frequency- or heat issue. But then again, I'm no expert. At all.
Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Juju

    Is ur CPU OCed ?????
And whats ur VDimm, cuz i had the same Problem when running Gothic II with all details aon 1600x1200 2xAniso & 4xFSAA.
I believe the Problem is that ur RAM shuts down under full load if ur VDimm is too low, because all MSI Boards dynamically OC a littel (3-4 Mhz FSB) when running under full load (I read that on http://www.tomshardware.com).
On my system with standard Vdimm @2.5 V and FSB Oced to 250 my system would crash almost everytime when I played Gothic II. Then i found out that the board booted at 407 Mhz DDR Clock. That's when i started suspecting that my Rams couldn't handle 407 Mhz when running at an extremely low 2.5 VDimm.
    So try the following:
-Increase VDimm from 2.5 up to 2.7 V in small steps and check ur system stability every time stop when everything seems fine.
-If u'r Oced don't go for FSB 250 (and multiplier at 5:4) try sth. like 243 so even if dynamically oced ur Rams won't go too far above 400 Mhz.
P.S.: My VDimm is now at 2.6 and FSB at 244 and everything is fine.

  • My Satellite laptop (A305) shuts down when run on the AC charger/adapter

The problem is that my Toshiba _A300 series laptop (A305) shuts down when you try to run it on the AC charger/adapter_. You can boot it with the power cord plugged in and it will get to Windows Desktop and maybe a few minutes more at most before shutting off.
It will boot and _run from battery without problem_, but if you plug in the AC while it is up and running on battery the machine will normally click off instantly and reboot to the message "Windows was not shut down correctly."
The _AC adapter works fine_ reading a steady 19.19 to 19.20 volts with a voltmeter. It also _charges the battery fine when the computer is off_. I have two Toshiba brand batteries and they both work fine.
One interesting thing is that the _computer runs fine on AC when in safe mode_.
I _did a reformat/factory restore_ of Vista to assure it was not software and drivers, and still got the same problem before any external devices had been plugged in.
It has the latest BIOS and I tried resetting it to default values in case anything had gotten changed. It made no difference.
This is _not a heating issue_ because _while it is run on battery I can watch long videos_ without it shutting off. I ran compressed air through the vents just to make sure, but it makes no difference in behavior. Usually with an overheating shut-off, the computer cannot be started until it has cooled some, but these shutdowns are accompanied by an instant reboot.
I have seen on some threads that this type of problem one can work around by disabling one of the processors in Device Manager, but I don't think that is much of a lasting solution or good for the computer.
Has anyone seen this problem before and have you come with a full diagnosis of the problem and a real solution?

I have Satellite A300 and until now everything works OK.
I would like to know what happen when you remove the battery and use notebook with power supply only. Does notebook shuts down again.
If not let OS run and put the battery.
Is the battery recognized properly? Does notebook switch off again?
To be honest I cannot imagine this issue has something with software or background processes. Recovery image you got with your notebook is designed for this certain notebook mode. Recovery image is tested and I dont think preinstalled OS has anything to do with this.
    Full diagnosis?
And how to do this? You know very well that diagnosis can be done with diagnostic tools only and such tools have services only. I hope you will find answers but Im 99% sure there is nothing you can do about that. Maybe you should contact service, explain the situation and ask for help.

  • Satellite P10-554 shuts down after few minutes and I can not reboot

    hello,
i hope anybody can help me with my satellite P10-554
when i start the notebook everything works fine a few minutes. than the monitor turns into black and the notebooks shuts down suddenly. i cannot reboot it, when i push the start-button nothing happens.
i have to wait for about an hour and then i can start it up again, but he works just a minute and shuts down again !
help me please, cause i need my notebook to work !

I did that many times. First you need a special torx-screwdriver. Then you can remove the cover over the fans. Than take your vacuum-cleaner and remove the dust. Take a brush or somethin else to remove the dust from the fans. Then, you need to remove I think 2 big screws, now you should hold the cooling falance in your hands, the one with the fans. Clean that properly.
After that you can remove the copper-cooler, with 2 more screws I think, but it is pretty obviously. Now you should see the blank cpu with lots of heat-paste on it. I dont know why they put so much of this stuff on it from toshiba. So get a better one like Arctic-Silver or sth. My advice is to take the CPU off (one screw on top as far as I remember) and clean the surface.
The copper you can clean under water, but dont use sth that could scratch the surface. After that let it dry good. Now just put the CPU back and fix it with the screw again. Take a !litte! heat paste and put it properly with a paper all over the surface of the CPU, but remember, just a little! Then follow all steps back, dont forget to clean the graphics-chip as well and put some paste on it. You can see which it is when you look under the fan-cooling-falance, there should be a rest of heat-paste. Everything back to its place and voil*, a nice, cool clean notebook. By the way, I replaced even the fans.
If you need further advice, just ask!

  • HELP! L305D-S5881 shuts down while playing

I bought a satellite L305D-S5881 about a year ago. It never malfunction or anything. About a month ago I was playing Heroes of Might&Magic Dark Messiah when it suddenly shut down. When I turn it back on, just before windows loads it shut down again. I unplugged de laptop, waited a couple of minutes, and worked perfectly.I didn't pay much attention, I wasn't able to play again for work issues, the computer seemed to work just fine, it remained on for days and nothing happened. Yesterday I tried a couple of games, knights of the old republic and king's bounty and it did exactly the same thing. About five minutes after i start to play, the computer crashes. It shuts down, if i want to start it right away, same thing, before windows loads. Wait a couple of minutes, and it just works perfectly.
I've tried another game, mass effect 2, and it work just fine, the computer doesn't crash.
I don't have the slightest idea what it's happening, and i'll be very gratefull if someone could help me.

See my post, about the same issue, here: http://laptopforums.toshiba.com/t5/General-Technology/Satellite-A205-intermittently-turning-off/td-p...
The reason it starts back up after waiting a few minutes, I've read in other forums, is there is like a "safety" power surge protector which gets tripped when a surge happens. You wait a few minutes for that to reset and the laptop will turn back on. When you tax the system it tries to draw more power and a surge happens again. This is likely due to a bad AC adapter (which can be cheaply replaced), or something internal (bad solder on the motherboard, loose wire connections).

  • Satellite P20-932 shuts down because temperature is too high

When I use my Satellite P20-932 for about 30 min, the temperature increases very quick! The laptop is turning-off automatic, without any error message.
I try to clean ventilator on the bottom of the laptop.
    I'm really desperate.
    Please help me!

Its a simply case of overheating.
The notebook shuts down automatically to prevent the notebook from the damage. It seems the temperature has increased to the critical level.
I assume the notebook is a little bit older and the cooling modules and the fans inside the notebook cannot run properly because of the dust and debris.
The cleaning of the cooling modules is a great idea but you should be careful.
If you have no experience, asks a technician for the professional cleanup.
Additional you should be sure that there is enough free space around the notebook. Its important for the properly air circulation.

  • Satellite P20-S203 shuts down suddenly

    Hi,
In the last month my Satellite P20-S203 is not behaving so well, and unfortunately it seems the problem is a hardware one (but I'm not sure, and that's why Im writing here)
The computer just shuts down suddenly (it happened 2 or 3 times in the last 30 days); all the times it did happen I was on the web on Firefox, but I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with that, and I'm also 99% sure it's not a virus, malware or anything like that, cause I formatted about 3 months ago, and nothing else behave in a strange way, the computer is not slow or anything like that.
The last two options are that the issue may be of hardware nature, or of a software one (like a conflict between installed programs and the OS); I'm more for the first one, but I'm not sure and I need help to find out... What should I do?
Also, when it suddenly shuts down, it won't turn on with the first try.
It needs like 10 or 20 times to open, like an old car that doesn't start; the first, say, 5 times I try to turn it on, it will only display the toshiba logo.
Then it passes through a screen I cannot read because it's too fast.
Then to a black screen and finally it turns off again.
With the next tries it goes a little bit more far, like it displays the windows logo, but, as that picture fades in, it stops at half of the fading process, resulting in a darker windows logo, like it's too hard for it to load the OS!!
But then it goes off again!
Then after some other tries it finally loads windows.
Any help would be highly appreciated, thank you!
    OS: Windows XP SP2

No it's ok Jayjay, I purchased this morning the right screwdriver (here in Greece these type of screws are called "French" or most internationally "torx" screws).
So I took away the cover above the fans, unscrewed the heat sink, removed the heat sink and together with that the cpu came up. I've now removed the old thermal grease and I'm ready to put the new one.
I like to mess around with things, I like to assemble and disassemble, I like to know how things work...but I also know, thanks to my personal experience, that there's no way not to make any damage when you mess around :) but that's ok with me, I' m used to it, as soon the pc will open once finished :D
Anyway, I have to admit that if I worked with a little more method now everything would be ok, like making a map of the screws, knowing where to put them back, because now two screws on the back won't mount any more (precisely the F6 screws on the back panel, where the usb, vga and parallel connectors are), and two more screws are in excess (!) If someone has the time to do it, please unscrew just these two screws (the F6 on the back) and post a photo of the screws, or just tell me the height, even if I'm sure that the problem is elsewhere.
    Goodbye

  • Satellite A30-921 shuts down after 10 mins

I own a Satellite A30-921 but it shuts down after 10 mins.
I've tried to alter the toshiba power management settings but they wont work any ideas ?

Does the notebook shut down automatically without showing any error messages?
This could be caused by an overheating issue!
How old is your notebook and did you clean the cooling ventilators in the past?
If not I would recommend doing this.
To clean the ventilators you could use the compressed air spray which can be purchased in most computer stores.
The problem is that the dust and debris inside the notebook prevents the cooling modules from properly working and therefore the temperature increases to the higher level. This leads to the automatically shuts downs.
In my opinion the fans cleaning could helps to solve this issue.
    Bye

  • Satellite P 30 shutting down

I have had my P 30 for around a year now and after playing a game or watching a DVD for an hour it shuts down. After reading many messages in this forum, it is apparent that Toshiba notebooks are prone to overheating and this is how the system protects itself from total burnout. The back around the fans does get extremely hot. The fans are working and there is plenty of ground clearence so it obviously needs taking apart and cleaning. Does anyone know where I can find the information that shows me how to properly clean a satellite P 30 please. Last thing I want to do is take it apart and then never work again. Any help would be muchly appreciated.

I use the vacuum cleaner. It sucks all the dust pretty well.
But the dust is not always responsible for the overheating and automatically shut downs.
You should check if the notebook "breathe" properly. The place around the notebook and the heatsink should be free.
I have also found this useful topic: Maybe it helps a little bit
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=14096
You should also check the Toshiba power saver setting. Please check the cooling processor speed and the cooling method

  • Satellite P755D repeatedly shutting down.

The model is P755D-S5378. This has been happening since about two weeks after I bought the computer, and is happening with increasing frequency. At this point I cannot use the computer because it will shut itself down within a few minutes of starting up and booting windows. Occasionally it will not shut all the way down, but will put itself into sleep mode and bring itself out a few minutes later. When this happens, the computer will load back up but the screen never comes back on, forcing me to restart. The shut-down is happening 5 or 6 times a day at this point, and doesn't seem to be tied to any particular kind of usage - usually I'm browsing the internet, but sometimes it will shut itself down just after powering on, before I've opened any programs. I've tried removing the battery for 30 seconds, but the behavior persisted. I don't know how else to fix this but it's quite annoying as I'm unable to use a two-month old computer.

I've had the same problem with my Satellite P755D-S5378 for a little over half a year now. It first started happening right as the warranty was about to run out, but it only happened once or twice around that time, so I figured it was just a fluke and didn't call about it. Then it started happening more and more frequently, to the point where I could barely use my computer.
I thought it might be a software problem so ran checks on everything, tried running in Safe Mode with and without networking, tried disabling hibernate / sleep / eco mode, and so forth, but none of that had any effect. Also ran checks on the hard drive and memory; nothing wrong there either. Then decided it might be a heat issue or a short of some kind, so opened up the laptop, cleaned the fan and heatsink, checked all the cables and made sure they were seated properly, etc., but that didn't do any good either. I also tried removing one RAM stick then the other to see if one of them might be the issue (both were fine), inspected the motherboard (also fine), etc. Eventually discovered that tapping the play/pause button on the shortcuts strip at the top would cause the computer to try to wake up or turn back on after the unexpected sleep / shutoff had happened, so figured maybe there was something wrong with that strip. Went back in and unplugged the ribbon connector for the strip - still didn't help anything.
After dealing with this off and on for months (the strangest part is, these random shutoffs will happen multiple times a day for a few months at a time, and then the problem will disappear for a month or so, then start happening again) I finally found a few forums here suggesting that the power button might be the issue, and that it's basically a manufacturing defect / faulty part. I called Toshiba Support to ask what would happen if I took my laptop in to a service center and the technicians there agreed with the assessment that a faulty power button was the issue. Given that it seems they've been installing faulty power buttons in at least a few different laptop models, I was hoping they'd be willing to replace the defective part at no cost - or even just give me a replacement part to install myself. No dice, of course. Basically, since my laptop is no longer under warranty, it's no longer their problem that they built it with a bad part - it was good enough to last just under a year, so it's good enough for them! (Guess who I'm *not* buying my next laptop from?) Hence, don't waste your time on a phone call unless your laptop is still under warranty.
Anyway, saw on here that someone had tried adding tape to the area around the metal disc switch to keep it from triggering when it wasn't supposed to. So, took everything apart one more time, carefully removed the power button assembly, and added 3 - 4 layers of double-sided tape on the bottom / sticky side around the disc switch. So far my laptop has stayed on long enough for me to write this post, which is significantly better than it's been behaving of late. Only time will tell if this fix actually works, of course; if my laptop shuts off again after I've submitted this, I'll post again so you can save yourself the effort.
If you're fed up and have decided to just get a replacement power button assembly, they look to be between $20 and $100, and the part number is K000121910. I'll definitely be doing this if my laptop starts shutting off again, though of course, there's a good chance the replacement will have the exact same problem as the original. ~Sigh.~ I take very good care of my equipment, so this laptop should last at least another two years, *if* I can finally get this issue fixed.
    UPDATE:
The "tape fix" didn't solve the problem - at least, not by itself. My computer shut off again within a few hours. *However*, I then tried also loosening the two screws on the bottom of the case that are nearest to the power button area, *and* unsnapping the snap on the case nearest to that area as well (it's one of the case snaps in the battery area). I then *carefully* reinserted the battery so the case would stay unsnapped where I wanted it to, and went from there. I have, since then, had two full glorious days without a shutoff (and I use my computer pretty much constantly, since I work from home). I'll update this post once more if things end up going downhill again, but I'm at least minorly optimistic at this point.
