Help - save smart folder window disappearing

Dear friends
I have a really big problem with saving smart folders : i do all the steps until I press "save" - at that point the save widow only appears for 1 second and than disappears so I am unable to specify the location where I want to same the smart folder.
I get he same disappearing act when I try to add a shared folder in the "share" menu - I press the "+", the window appears for a second and than it's gone.
Please help as this is becoming very annoying.
Thanks
Chris

What you are experiencing is absolutely incorrect behavior for any OS. If you haven't already, you might start thinking about re-installing Leopard. You could try most or all of the typical troubleshooting steps first though. +i.e. Trash certain Preferences files, Repair Permissions, Reset PRAM, Unplug all devices, Log in as Guest user, Boot into Safe Mode, Check connections, Check for proper Firmware version, Un-install (clean) third party apps, Unplug power for 20 minutes, Hit the side of the case real hard....no don't do that one, etc.+ Its one thing for the data algorithm of the OS to be on the outs but when the UI elements won't operate correctly, as in your case, it sounds serious to me. Sorry I can't give you anything more specific.

  • Can't save smart folder searches

When trying to save a smart folder search the save dialog box quickly slides down and then up without stopping to let me actually save it. Has anyone else experienced this problem and possibly know of a solution? Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can edit them even more easily using Property List Editor, if you have that installed.
I tried making a smart folder with Activity Monitor running to see if I could spot anything interesting. All I noticed was that both Finder and Windowserver were more active as I created and saved a new one (and mds of course as the search was was done). So that wasn't very enlightening. The only other thing that occurs to me is perhaps something has gone wrong with the Saved Searches folder itself (it's in your home Library folder), since that is the default place to save to. I tried copying my folder to another drive, then trashed the original. When I relaunched the Finder and created a new Smart Folder the Finder had created a new Saved Searches folder. If that doesn't work either, you can trash your creation and put the original back.

  • Save As dialog window disappears when trying to save or use pdf writer

When I try to create a pdf using a pdf writer/printer, or even when i try to save a pdf file, the dialog box showing where to save it appears then immediately disappears before i can choose a name or location to save the pdf.  i have tried reinstalling the reader, reooting, reinstalling the pdf writer, nothing seems to work.

I have tried multiple pdf writers including cutepdf and a proprietary pdf writer so I am pretty sure the problem lies within adobe reader.  Especially since the problem occurs when I just try to save the pdf and not use the writer.

  • Smart Folder - date calculation

    Hi,
I was hoping to create a smart folder search to find all podcasts that are older than 2months old (so that I can copy them to an external HD)
The finder interface does not allow me to set a rule such as creation date > 2 months ago. Instead I have to hard code the date.
What is the best way to achieve this?
    Cheers,
    BM

I played with this a little. You could try the "intuitive" method of setting up a line like this,
creation date is within last 2 months
but I think that would probably "hard-code" the interval starting with the date that the smart folder was created.
If that doesn't create a look-back interval that always starts with the current date, then try the following instead:
From a command-F search window (or an option-command-N "New Smart Folder" window), click the little "plus" circle on the far right to set up a new search criteria.  Click on the new line's  left popup button to change it, and choose "Other..". In the list that follows, choose "Raw Query" and click OK. In the blank entry field for Raw Query, copy-paste the following line:
    kMDItemContentCreationDate > $time.today(-62)
The "62" represents the number of days to look back, starting from the current day.
Use the plus button to add new lines for any other search criteria that you might want, and then finally click "save" to save the search.
    Edit:
Ah - I had misread your post, and now see you wanted to find items older than 2 months ago. To do this, use the following line instead of the one above:
    kMDItemContentCreationDate < $time.today(-62)

  • Help with Smart Folders please!

First of all, I use a Swedish OS so I'm not sure of exactly what everything is called in English, but I've tried to do approximate translations below.
I want to set up a Smart Folder that gives me a quick list of any Logic Express projects that have been edited during the last one or two weeks. That would seem like a simple task, but I honestly can't find a way to list ONLY the projects and nothing else.
At the top of the New Smart Folder window, I've selected that it should only search in the folder where all the projects are. Then I tried to do a search criteria, "type: folders", and "last edit: last two weeks". Surely, I get a list of all the project folders that have been edited during the last two weeks, BUT I also get all the sub folders within those folders. Those folders are automatically created by Logic, and hold sound files, back up files etc that are needed for each project.
Since these folders are always named either "Audio Files", "Bounces", "Freeze Files", "Song Backups" or "Undo Data" (I think), I thought it would be possible to make a few "name: is not:", and then the above. But it shows out I can't choose "is not"! I can only choose "is" or "includes" or other variations of that!
After giving up on that method, I thought that maybe there is a way to make it list ONLY the top level folders in the parent folder? But I can't seem find one... and it wouldn't really be optimal anyway since I some times group related projects into one folder.
So then I thought that I should be able to list the actual song documents. It's not optimal either, since I would prefer to get access to the whole project folder immediately, but it's better than nothing... Sure enough, I change "type: folders" to "type: other...: LogicExpress Song". Works, but once again I get a lot of hits that I don't want, namely the automatic back-up files that are created for each project. They are always called the same as the original file, but with an added ".00"... so if the project is called "My Song.lso", the back up would be called "My Song.00.lso". So once again, I'm left with the problem of not being able to search for "name: is not:" or "name: does not include:"!
Please help me solve this! I can't believe there is no way to do this! I can't possibly be forced to include a certain word in all my project folders only to be able to search for them? That's silly!

Actually you can get more information here at Apple's own site, and download some "reference" pdf files to consult when you want to create complex searches. Here's the main reference document:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Carbon/Reference/MetadataAttributesRef/ MetadataAttributesRef.pdf
And here's the Query Expression Syntax page:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Carbon/Conceptual/SpotlightQuery/Concep ts/QueryFormat.html
That's a kind of "quick reference" guide page. If you click the little link to display the TOC you can get even more leads to follow for even more technical information.

  • Safari 3.0.4 on OS 10.5.1 not crashing but browser windows DISAPPEAR! Help!

I know there is a thread in the beta forum with a generic title "Safari acting strange" but I figured a more specific thread title might get more attention from those experiencing the same anomalies.
    Here is my problem:
I'm using Safari 3.0.4 that came with the Leopard 10.5 disk I installed on my laptop. Safari was working fine for a good couple weeks and then suddenly it began acting strange indeed.
Now after an undetermined amount of time when I have a Safari browser window(s)/tab(s) open it will suddenly disappear off my screen without provocation (meaning I don't have to perform any action to do this. I can be sitting there not touching the laptop or typing anything; it will just disappear as if some unseen person with a remote control hits the Let's-mess-with-this-guy's-computer button). At first glance it seems that Safari has crashed.
However when I look to see what happened or perhaps relaunch I see that Safari is still up and running. The menu bars all work. It seems to be in perfect working order. Only problem is the browser windows have disappeared and nothing I do will bring them back. I can try to create new browser windows and Safar thinks it is creating them because I can check in Windows menu and see the fruits of my efforts stacking up more and more as I add new windows and tabs in an attempt to get the browser windows back. However where these windows live is a mystery to me. When I try to quit Safari I get an Alert message asking me if I really want to close the windows with the multiple tabs in them (further supporting the theory that Safari still thinks windows are open and seeable by me)
When I DO quit Safari and relaunch it, it remains in the same state. No browser window is seen yet looking in the Windows menu I can see that a new browser window is present. The only way to use my Safari again is to reboot my computer. Of course this fixes the problem for maybe 5 minutes until the browser windows disappear again. And that's when I switch to Firefox.
I've repaired permissions. I've checked for any Input Managers folder for culprits but seeing as this is a fairly new laptop and that I just did an Archive and Install of Leopard with a fresh Safari in toe I have not installed any 3rd party applications so no Input Managers folder exists anywhere on my laptop.
I have the standard Safari Plug-Ins that come with Quicktime.
I have Spaces turned off. I am not using dual monitors so the browser windows are not being shot off to a second screen somewhere.
I see nothing in the crashlog because I actually don't think Safari is treating this behavior as a crash. It's not quitting unexpectedly or anything.
So I am at a total loss. Any ideas?

I had this problem as well.
First: In Safari go into preferences and select the "security" tab. Uncheck "Enable Plug-ins"
This fixed a lot of bugs for me !
Second: If that worked than you just need to go to Hard Drive/Library/Internet Plug-Ins
There should be a folder there that is called "Disabled Plug-Ins" I just put all of the plug-ins in that folder, went back and rechecked " Enable Plug-Ins" in Safari preferences, and then one by one added plug-ins back out of the disabled folder while reloading a web page that caused problems before. After some trial & error I think I have a setup that works for now. Hope this helps!! Also as of now I have installed all software updates. My mac has been doing this for a while. Logging out & back in reset safari back to where it was useable.
I have not had problems with any other programs.

  • Smart Folder Help

I have a folder for a specific project I'm working on and I want to create a smart folder that I can add to my sidebar that will list only files within that project folder that have been opened within the past week. How would I do this? Whenever I try to create a smart folder, it only lets me choose from "My Mac" or "Applications."
    Thanks

open your project folder in finder and enter command+f. this will start a search where you can choose "my mac" or that folder for location to search. enter the search parameters and save the search as a smart search.

  • Last Played Smart Folder Help

Ok so I have created a smart folder to show any tracks from my library that have not been played in the last year. However, it only removes the track if it gets played all the way through, rather than if I skip it after a few seconds.
What parameters can I set to ensure they get removed if it gets played all the way through or it gets skipped?
    Thanks

ah i have worked this out! Just incase anyone else is looking for the answer here it is...
last played - is not in the last - 12 months
then click the ... as opposed to the +
last skipped - is not in the last - 12 months
you should see whenever you skip the song the track will disappear. Result

How to Adjust Mouse Settings in Mac OS X Lion
    By Bob LeVitus
7 of 9 in Series: The Essentials of Adjusting Settings in Mac OS X Lion
Some Mac OS X Lion users like to customize the way their mouse works. The Mouse System Preferences pane in OS X Lion is where you set your mouse speed and double-click delays.
If you have a notebook Mac, you may see a Mouse icon in the System Preferences application, but unless you have a mouse connected via USB or Bluetooth, it will just sit there searching for a mouse that's not there.
The first item in this pane is a check box that’s new in Mac OS X Lion: Move Content in the Direction of Finger Movement When Scrolling or Navigating. If scrolling or navigating in windows feels backward to you, try un-checking this box.
Next are the features you’ll find in the Mouse System Preferences pane (if you have a mouse connected):
Move the Tracking Speed slider to change the relationship between hand movement of the mouse and cursor movement on-screen.
The Double-Click Speed setting determines how close together two clicks must be for the Mac to interpret them as a double click and not as two separate clicks.
If your mouse has a scroll ball or scroll wheel, you also see a Scrolling Speed slider, which lets you adjust how fast the contents of a window scroll when you use the scroll wheel or ball.
If your mouse has more than one button, you see a pair of Primary Mouse Button radio buttons. These let you choose which button you use to make your primary (regular) click. Conversely, the other mouse button (the one you didn’t choose) becomes your secondary (Control or right) click. This is a setting many lefties like to change. Set the primary button as the right button, and you can click with the index finger of your left hand.

    nothing will be screwed up.
but, if it makes you feel better, do this:
    download the iTunes standalone installer
    reboot into safe mode
run a permission repair session using disk utility
    run the installer
    let the Mac reboot normally

  • Imovie window disappeared? HELP!!

I was working on a slideshow with pix and video in imovie and i was dragging some pictures to the slideshow and all of the sudden that whole window disappeared. Now when I open imovie, the bar at the top shows up but theres no window...??! Also, is there any auto recovery, as I hadnt yet saved the slideshow but had several hours of work put into it...

    OK that did it!
    Let me explain more.
I have a MacBook hooked up to an external Apple Cinema Display. I use a trick to turn off the macbook screen, so that only the Cinema Display is on:
    1) Close Lid on MacBook Pro to put it to sleep.
    2) Unplug power from MacBook, then plug it back in and bang on keyboard.
This wakes up the Mac and the external display, while leaving the built-in screen off. (if you do this trick, Step 3 is to crack open the MacBook to let heat out - you can open it all the way and the built in display still won't come on).
ANYWAY... putting all the above aside, the bottom line is that when I first edited the iMovie project, only the external display was on. For some reason, trying to open iMovie with both displays on causes this problem where the iMovie window does not show up, even though the menu bar across the top does.
I am amazed that this worked.. but it did. Maybe you were doing something similar?

  • Smart folder sorting?

I have long relied on smart folders to help me find the largest files on my hard drive, letting me save space when necessary... however, I can't seem to find any size-sorting option on Smart Folders this time around (when it was really easy to find in OS X 10.4). I can sort in regular folders by size, but not in Smart Folders... anyone figure this out?

    Two options:
    1) Click Cmd+F. This will create a search. With the little drop down menu on the left (might start with "Kind") select "Other". A window pops up and you can select "Size" (if you use this a lot, select the tick box on the right that says "In Menu"). Then set your size and Spotlight will find it for you. Then, once the search is running/ran, click on the "Save" button, and it will save to your Saved Searches in your sidebar (which I think is a cool addition)
    2) Similar to the first... Press OptCmdN (or select New Smart Folder from the File menu) just like before. In the toolbar, there should be a little gear (if not, add it to the toolbar by going to the View menu and selecting Customize Toolbar). Click on the gear and then on the option "Show Search Criteria". Repeat the second half of option 1 above and TA-DA!, you have yourself a new smart folder.

  • Mail messages window disappear when searching

    Hello,
I'm using Mail 8.0 on OS X 10.10 (14A389). With French language and localisation. This is something I already noticed in Public Beta.
I have my Sent folder selected (maybe it would happen with another). I start typing something in the search box. Then the whole main messages window disappear immediately. But Mail thinks it's still visible. Even search suggestions continues to show. Typing cmd+0 to hide/show the messages window does not help.
I have to restart Mail to get my messages window back.
This happens randomly. After restarting Mail I can search as usual without the window disappearing. But sometimes later it will happen again.
Anyone encounters this too? Is this known from Apple? Any better temporary workaround than restarting Mail?

It still happens and it really gets boring. I have Mail 8.0 (1990.1). It happens from any folder selected: Inbox, Sent, Smart Inboxes...
How could such a bug remain undetected and not fixed asap? Maybe it's a plot from Apple to get us to ditch Mail and instead buy Unibox, Sparrow or Airmail from the Mac App Store so they get more $$$ commissions?

  • "Save as"  Finder Window

My comment is coming a little late in the game but it's something that has bugged me since OS 9.
If I remember way back when, when I saved a document with the "Save as" command, one would get a drop down window and when one clicked Save, the file would appear in the appropriate folder in the window. One could see the file was filed in the appropriate place. Since OS X, when Save is selected, the window disappears without any hint your filing has been completed properly. I find myself reopening a the Finder to confirm my filing. Am I one of a very few who feel compelled to verify a filing after a "Save as" command by having to reopen the Finder? Just a comment on something that bugs me!

Probably not the only one... the OS 9 Finder way did slow things down a bit. But it may be a helpful feature for some. Best if you could activate or not. You can file a feature request here Mac OS X Feedback
