Help - setting up a document for A4 printing

Hi everyone,
I am very new to InDesign - using CS5.5. Trying to set up my first A4 document for printing. I an unsure of the printers settings but just want to check in the document - i need to have my background image right to edge of the bleed (3mm), and any text needs to be kept inside the magenta box - or can it go right out to the black line?
My image isn't quite big enough to go right to the top on the bleed line so i have used the same color rectanlge at the top . . . will this work? You can tell its a differnt image. Needs to go right to the edge of the page.
Is there any I need to do specifically to set this up to be printed ? Thanks for any ideas/suggestions/comments

Bleed is area outside the theoretical trim area of your page and it is used to compensate for misalignments during cutting. A typical bleed would be 1/8" or 3mm and any art or color that is intended to reach to the edge of the page after trimming should extend beyond the page edge (black line) by that amount. Set up the document at the trim size (in this case A4) and then press the more options button in the document setup dialog to reveal the Bleed and Slug fields. Enter the bleed amount and press OK and you'll see a new red guide outside the page boundary. Is this a facing apges document? How many pages? How will it be bound?
I'm guessing the Magenta box woould be the margin guides. These are set by you according to what you want, so there is no hard and fast rule for where they might be. Text and other critical content should always be set inside the page bound at least as much as the bleed allowance, however (and I prefer more), because if the cutting is off it will shift the trim outside the page area on one edge, but also inside the page by the same amount on the opposite edge and you don't want the text to be cut off or crowded at the edge.
If your photo is not large enough to extend into the bleed area you shoud either enlarge it, if that won't reduce the resolution too much, find another photo that is big enough, or redisign the page so the phot itself does not need to bleed. A transition form a photo to a colored background, no matter how similar, is nearly always visible.

• Setting Up a Document for a Billboard - Need Help

Hope someone can help me out with this.
I'm trying to design a billboard. I'll be working primarily in Illustrator.
My issue is that I'm having trouble setting up my document due to the format and size. I know that it's going to be made to scale, perhaps 1:10 but I still can't figure out how to set it up.
Here are the specs:
Board Size: 14' (h) x 40' (w) - feet
Layout Size: 7" (h) x 20" (w)- inches
Bleed Size: 7.5" (h) x 20.5" (w) - inches
Safety Size: 6.5" (h) x 19.5" (w) - inches
What I don't understand is how, take for instance the bleed's height x width, translate to top bottom left right?
Also, how do I set the safety size, layout size? Do these also translate into top bottom left right specs?
Can someone please help!!

Layout is the art board size. Subtract the art board size from the bleed size and divide by 2 to get the bleed amount. (in this case, 1/2 inch on each size)
The Safety Size (also know sometimes as the Live Area) is the part of the billboard that your text should stay within.

• Best Practices for setting up InDesign Effects for offset printing.

I'm new to the forum so I hope I'm posting my question in the correct place. I'm a prepress supervisor for a company that receives most of it's work as PDFs exported from InDesign. I notice on more and more work (proabably 75%) our customers are setting up their effects in InDesign. We receive files exported from CS3 and CS4, mac and pc. Our prepress system is Prinergy 4.1. We have job options that we recommend customers use for PDF export directly out of the applicaton and we are currently testing PDFX4. The problem is we don't have consistent results with our ripped files, we often see artifacts around items that use certain effects (such as the bevel and emboss effect), many times the customer uses a drop shadow along with the bevel and emboss and we see "pixelation" or low-resolution "jagginess." Files that use feathering often drop part of the feathered image and if black text is touching an effect it will process out to CMYK. If we have the InDesign file it sometimes works to change how the effect is applied (text, object, fill), sometimes we have to flatten on export or write a PDFX4. If we are working with the customer's PDF we often have to flatten at the rip, save the PDF as a postscript file or request the native files to troubleshoot. Are there guidelines to applying effects in Indesign? We would like to try to document for our customers recommended processes for creating files.
Thanks!

Our strongest recommendation at Adobe for best PDF print publishing workflow results is to use the PDF/X-4 settings for exporting PDF from InDesign 6 and saving PDF from Adobe Illustrator 14. (The "draft PDF/X-4" support of InDesign 5 and Illustrator 13 was based on a draft version of the ISO PDF/X-4 specification that was significantly modified prior to final ISO standard ratification and publication!) PDF/X-4 provides for a reliable workflow in which live transparency and color management is carried in the PDF file itself; no "flattening" of transparency effects or color conversions occur until as late as possible in the print workflow, preferably at the RIP itself!
PDF/X-4 is an excellent choice for PDF if you have a workflow which uses the Adobe PDF Print Engine technology in the RIP. In your case, Prinergy 4.1 does in fact provide Adobe PDF Print Engine technology. Make sure that (1) you enable the Adobe PDF Print Engine as opposed to CPSI and (2) you don't refine the pages as part of the Prinergy workflow (that process ruins your PDF by converting to PostScript and converting back to PDF - not something you want to do for a reliable PDF workflow with transparency and color management).
Note that even if you do use PDF/X-4 and properly configure your PDF workflow system / RIP, it is still incumbent upon the designer to produce reasonable content. Just because "it looks good on the screen" (additive screen color) doesn't mean that it will reasonably translate to ink on substrate (subtractive printing color). Adobe does provide guidelines for use of transparency and color on its website for use by designers to guide them.

Attempting to connect my Dell 968w to the network for access by my HP and Dell laptops. Dell said I need an IP address for the printer..how do I set the address???

you need to contact dell printer support for this info...this is usually done by printing a network config page on your printer & you'll see the printer ip address there.

• Help setting up port forwarding for Ekiga

Hi
I am trying to set up Ekiga on my Arch X86_64 box but I can't get port forwarding to work on the Thomson TG585v7 wireless router, which I am sharing with a neighbor. I have tried some how-to's I found via Google and set up Application/Game Sharing for the ports Ekiga uses. I also set up static IP connection as it seems to be needed by the router for port forwarding to work but Ekiga still reports that it cannot set up my network connection and asks me to set up port forwading manually, which I have already done.
I would very much appreciate any help to get Ekiga going for me.
My thanks in advance.

Thanks, but the problem is that setting up the router doesn't seem to work. I checked and repeated the set up a few times but no result. I feel I am missing a little detail somewhere but can't put my finger on it :-(

• Hello - Can anyone give me help/pointers on prepping art for screen printing?

I have expereince in Illustrator, but mostly for print. Is there special ways of preparing art work for screen printing? This would be art/logos for hats, tee shirts ansd promotional materials for a screen prininting company - mostly apparel?
Thanks, any info is appreciated - I've got to learn the right way to do this in two weeks time -
Rosie

Best advice I can give you with so broad a questions is: Forget about color; think in terms of inks. Also think in terms of opaque, not translucent, inks. Inks for the kinds of garments you mention are almost always opaque; so you have to forget about on-screen appearances which assume the translucent inks of offset printing.
The way you properly prepare files for screen printing is highly dependent upon the capabilities of the particular screen printing house. Screen printing runs the gamut from crude hand-done process in a local T-Shirt shop to highly automated high-resolution imprints on instrument face plates; and everything in between.
In the most common setups, you should think in terms of line art, not halftone or tint dots. That rules out soft & fuzzy shading, fuzzy drop shadows, and other raster effects.
Some garment screen shops are able to handle toning dots; other's aren't. Some shops can do 4-color process; some can't. Six-color screen printing machines are fairly commonplace these days, even in local shops. The better garment imprinters have equipment capable of CMYK process, but instead build gloriously brilliant images using six or more opaque inks on any color substrate.
So without more specifics about the shop capabilities and the specific artwork, it's not a simple matter to give you a ready-in-two-weeks crash course in preparing artwork for screen printing to cover everything you many encounter.

• Setting up airport Extreme for Remote Printing

I'm leaving town and need to be able to print to our work printer (HP LJ 1320 connected via Ethernet to AirPort Extreme 802.11n).
I also want to set up our home printer (HP LJ 1022 connected to Time Capsule via USB).
I've spent hours trying everything I can think of - changed AirPort settings, have desktops sharing printers - nothing works.
I have no problem connecting to computers over the internet - using screen sharing with ease. I am at a loss as to why printing is such a problem. any help will be hugely appreciated!

I did open those ports on my AirPorts.
I've tried setting up the printers as LPD and IPP as well as HP JetDirect - Socket, but despite pointing my print jobs at these, nothing has worked yet.
Is the Airport going to act as a print server - or is that just part of the printer? Is a server even necessary? It isn't when I'm on site with either printer.
good luck with your set-up. thanks for your input.

• Need help setting up LDAP server for Address Book

I've set up Panther servers before for AFP which is pretty simple but now the office I work at wants me to setup an LDAP server so they can share the same contact information, probably about 2,000+ entries. I'm guessing that this will have to be entered in the LDAP server entry by entry.
I need to know how to setup the server and what settings need to be on the clients' computers, such as in Address Book.
The server is an older G4 tower and I've got 8 computers hooked up to it on a simple network. I don't think I'll need to make the LDAP server accessible from outside the network but it's something I'll have to worry about for the future.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

• Creating documents for duplex printing

Hi forum,
I've got a report that containts a repeating frame in such a way that each record is a letter to be sent to a particular person from database. Each letter might take a particular number of physical pages, depending on the amount of information that goes in it. Some of them takes one page, others take two, three, ... And here comes up the problem: As the PDF to be generated must be printed in duplex mode, I need to make sure that each letter takes an even number of pages. How can I do this?
Thanks a lot for your eventual help.

• Help setting up Lion Server for remote access

I have been going in cricles for weeks trying to set this up correctly. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
I got Lion Server and Server Admin Tools all updated and have been trying to follow Terry Walsh from We Got Served's guide but I missing something.
I purchased a domain from GoDaddy. Let's call it bradnet.com
My domain and dyn domain are not really what I have typed here but close enought that they should work for my example and trouble shooting.
Because my ISP (Comcast) doesn't provide a static IP I registerd for an account with dyn.com. This is where I get really confused. With dyn.com i created a host name: bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com and downloaded there updater software. It found my public IP address and said everything is ok.
I went back to GoDaddy and in my DNS manger page added the host: bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com and entered my public IP.
I then went to the server pane to edit the host name. I followed your instructions to edit the name and selected Host Name for Internet. I left the computer name as mini (what I had previously named it for file sharing before the server upgrade) and entered mini.bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com as the host name. When it takes me back to the server pane, in the bottom window it states:
Your Server's host name is mini.bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com, and its IP address is 192.168.1.10. You can change network settings in the Server pane.
I never get the your network is configured properly message.
I went and set my computer's IP to DHCP with manual address (although all of my machines are set up with DHCP reservations so I guess that is a little redundant) to 192.168.1.10.
I skipped the port forwarding step because I am using the latest AirPort Extreme as my router.
I then opened a browser and tried:
http://bradnet.com
http://mini.bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com
http://mini.bradnet.com
http://bradnet.dyndns-rocks.com
All of these got me the can't find the server response from Safari.
Also, I have not yet set up Directory Services. Terry's guide seems to suggest to do this step first.
I'm sure I have messed up some step somewhere can you see what I have done wrong?
Also, is it a problem to set up open directory services using a .local host and then go back and change it for internet access later or do you need to set that up from the start? My family is getting impatient with me trying to get this to work.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer!
Brad

That manual page is not fully correct. There is written:
Public UDP Port(s): <enter the appropriate UDP port value(s)>
Public TCP Port(s): <enter the appropriate TCP port value(s)>
Private IP Address: <enter the reserved IP address of the host device (from step 1)>
Private UDP Port(s): <enter the same Public UDP Ports or your choice>
Private TCP Port(s): <enter the same Public TCP Ports or your choice>
But it should be:
Public UDP Port(s): <enter unique UDP Ports of your choice>
Public TCP Port(s): <enter unique TCP Ports of your choice>
Private IP Address: <enter the reserved IP address of the host device (from step 1)>
Private UDP Port(s): <enter the UDP Ports used by your device>
Private TCP Port(s): <enter the TCP Ports used by your device>
Make sure you use the same ports in the private settings as you have defined in your IP camera. Normally a camera will use port 80 by default, so use 80 here.
The Public ports must all be unique. If you have not defined a port 80 here, you can also use 80. This will fail however when using multiple cameras. I for instance have 5 IP cameras and use the public ports 8451, 8452, 8453 etc.

• Help setting up ipad minis for our two kids.

We purchased ipad minis for my two kids this Christmas (ages 6 & 8). I have been working on setting them up so they are ready to use. I created gmail accounts and Apple ID accounts to use for messaging and FaceTime only. I put restrictions so they can not use email, Facebook, Twitter, Safari, etc. I plan on using a kid friendly browsing such as Mobicip. The part I am getting hung up is being able to put certain things on their iPads from my wife's iTunes account. We have decided to use her account to sync with their new iPads. Obviously, the kids will not have access to her password on iTunes. She has very few game apps on her ipad. I would like to add fun appropriate kid games to her iTunes account to sync to their iPads, but not my wife's. The same thing with iBooks and music. Some of my wife's books are not kid appropriate. I know you can create playlists to share music. What is the best way to go about setting up iTunes? Any other things I am forgetting to keep inappropriate material from curious kids.
Thanks.

• Help setting up an ipod for a gift

i'm purchasing either a nano or an ipod for a friend for christmas and sending it to her in another state. i'd like to set up an itunes account for her with her info originating on my pc, set up the ipod on my pc, add files to the ipod's library and then send it. is this possible? any help would be much appreciated.
nano, or 30g

Go ahead and put the movies on the iPad. However, when the person receiving the gift sets up the iPad in their name, the movies will be erased. So, you could put the movies on a USB flash drive and they could reinstall using the camera connection kit.
How to use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

• Help setting up windows auth for lighttpd/ldap etc

I'm running a server on my office that I only have accessible to people in our workgroup. I'd like to set it up to authenticate into our windows domain for ease of password management. I havent been able to get ldap working..and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction? most of the how-tos I find online are for setting up ldap for user account authentication. I dont need the users to be able to log into the box at all..just webserver.
my company uses secure ldap and I have the needed certificates, though I cant seem to get basic ldap queries working so I must be setting something up wrong. I'm open to using other authentication methods than ldap as I just need to auth into lighttpd.
Here's basically what I want to do:
Specify a list of users that are allowed to access the page.
If the users are in the allowed list, query the windows domain controller to validate their username/password.
thats it. nothing really fancy or complex. is ldap the best way to do this or kerberos, etc..? I would even be willing to switch to apache if that would simplify things.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
