Help setting up internet on a I-Mac I purchase from an auction
I purchase a Imac from an auction. It was used in a school envoirment, logon gives me student, teacher and tech. I can log in under teacher but I can not get permission to access the TC/ICP ? to install and setup my DSL 2wire connection.??? If I purchase the OSX will it reformat like a MS-XP product will do
1dent,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
Your iMac is most likely a G3 so this forum has plenty of sympathetic ears. However, you will find additional help here.
Short answer, yes, you can reformat the drive and pave over everything.
You will need an install disk. You can buy universal CDs or model specific CDs. The iMac CDs will be cheaper if you only have iMacs. Otherwise, a universal install CD will cover all models.
May I suggest partitioning the drive to give a little room to backup system files unless you only have a 4 gig drive and need all the room you can spare on your primary drive. Plus, with fragmented files, reformatting will give you a clean start.
As for getting on the internet, iMacs were advertised and sold as internet ready. The first iMac I touched was delivered to a client while I was visiting his home. We were truely connected to the web in under 15 minutes. Your install CD will give you a clean install back to that state. BTW, check with the school, they may have a spare CD in some closet or drawer.

Help connecting my internet mail with my MAC mail
I apologize for asking so basic questions but I am lost... I have an account [email protected] that I can access on the internet.
I would like to connect that account with my MAC mail. It appears so simple but I tried about everything but it does not work. I tried setting the following parameters: email address: [email protected] (it works when accessing it on the web), incoming server: pop3.live.ca, outgoing server: smtp.live.ca, both SSL are set to on (port 995) with the password (the same that I use for accessing my web mail). It should work isn't it? But when the wizard try to access the servers, it says that the servers are not reachable.BAL's iMAC wrote:
Hi CaptFred, you made it work! That's great. Could you please take a moment to give me the settings that you used and any other tips that you might have? Thanks a lot for your help.
If you want to see messages on the server web page and receive them at home go into Mail's Preferences, Accounts tab. In there highlight the web email account and in the little tabs select the 'Advanced' tab. You can then tell mail to leave messages on the web server for so many days (your choice). This way you can see the email on the web server and at home on your Mac. -
Help setting VM's to use Static MAC using Powershell
Hi all,
I would like to create a powershell script to set all VM's with a Static MAC address on one of our Hyper-V Clusters.
So far I've managed to do this in the gui buy creating a new MAC Pool then shutting down 1 of the VM's and changing the network card from dynamic to static 00:00:00:00:00:00 within it's properties. After the changes are applied the VM is given a MAC address
from my MAC pool range.
I'd now like to create a script to do this for the remaining VM's - could somebody possibly help me out.. I have tried using the 'view script' button but I don't understand the output.
Many thanks for your help

Need help setting up internet on iMac PowerPC G3
I am trying to setup this old iMac PowerPC G3 500 Mhz computer. When the computer was last used I had earthlink and dial up. Now I have Cox cable internet. There are 2 PC's and 1 MacBook in the house working now using a linksys wireless router. I'm trying to get my old iMac PowerPC G3 500 Mhz computer setup to use cable internet (via ethernet) with Cox Communication. I have Netscape 4.73. I have a linksys modem model no. BEFCMU10
ver. 3. I have hooked up an ethernet cable from the modem to computer. I entered all the new info in the control panel in "internet" . In TCP/IP is where I'm confused! Am I missing something?Hi, pete -
The settings in the TCP/IP control panel are few; set:
Connect via: -to- Ethernet
Configure -to- Using DHCP Server
That's usually all that is necessary.
Other considerations -
I could not tell from the info available at Linksys's site whether that model modem has an auto-switching ethernet port. If it does not, you will need to use a Crossover type ethernet cable between the Mac and the modem, If it does, you can use either a Crossover or a Patch type cable.
Be sure the modem is on and warmed up a bit before starting up the Mac. Many Macs will disable the ethernet bus during startup if a live device is not detected as being connected at that time. -
Help setting up color management profiles on mac
I've downloaded the lasted drivers for my Canon MP620 printer, and installed them. But when I go to color management in the print module and click on managed by printer and then select others, the Canon drivers are not there. Wondering if I'm missing a step here for getting the Canon profiles to the right place. I'm using mac os 10.6

From my little experience with Canon 'multi' printers, I would forget printing out of Lightroom with anything other than Managed by Printer. The Others you mention are profiles necessary for allowing Lightroom to manage the printing. I've set up two Canon multi models (MX860 & MP560). Neither managed to produce decent prints using Managed by Lightroom - largely because of the way that the Canon driver controls are configured. I talked at length with Canon (UK) about a work around, but in the end they gave up. That's the downside. The upside is that both printers produced great quality prints using the Solution Menu software that comes with the printers.

Java - help to write scripts after moving to mac os x from windows
hey, ive recently converted to using a mac. I study java as part of my uni course, and need to write java scripts. Is there a java script editor pre-installed on mac os x? Ive downloaded jEdit aswell to write scripts, so thats not essential, but my major problem is how do i compile the scripts? In windows theres dos, whats the equilavent on mac? If someone could give me a quick run through of how i would compile a script and run it that would be awesome. As on windows i found the directory, used javac <script>.java to compile, then java <script> to run. Is this the same on mac. Also a few hints on how to use the mac command window (if there is one) would be awesome, e.g. how to call a directory, dir on windowns etc, then how to change directory, e.g. cd c:\ on windows. Any help on this would be much appreciated, thanks, andy.
macbook pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)Hello drew__r,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions, and congratulations on making a choice which I hope you will never regret. (I have to use both platforms; but for personal choice it's a no-brainer!)
I'm not a programmer. But most of the things that in Windows are done via DOS are done in the Mac via Terminal, which uses Unix, and is far more idiot proof than the Windows equivalent. I should know: even I've used it!
You might get a reply in this forum, for I know that several serious Unix experts are regular contributors in this particular forum. However, if you don't get a reply in a day or two, you might consider posting in the Mac OSX Technologies Forums. (Multiple postings of a question should normally be avoided, and can get the user into trouble with the moderators. So say "Sorry for reposting here, but . . . ") Those technology forums also give you access to Applescript experts; and that is a brilliant and quite powerful "plain language" way of writing scripts for OSX. I don't know if it would work for your request.
Best of luck,
Martin

Hi. My kids are all on my itunes account. As a result they also ge my text messages. I would like to set up their own accounts but be able to transfer the songs and apps they purchased. Can this be done?
You can still share an iTunes account for purchasing and downloading content. Just create a new Apple ID for iCloud to use for Messaging. If you try to create a new Apple ID for music and content, everything on their phone is tied to the Apple ID used for purchases, and would then require the password for that Apple ID to update. The way I described is easier.

Plz Help setting up my Mac g4 with WRT54g. PLEASE!!
Hey, first let me say that I am brand new to doing anything wireless. Just never had the need for it before and now I am completly lost and havnt a clue what to do or where to go. Here is my situation and what I want to accomplish.
First I am not trying to go wireless with my Mac. I purchased the router so I could use my internet connection with my XBox360 which is hooked up downstairs from my computer. So basically what Iwant to do is just hardwire my Mac into the router and keep the router right next to my computer. I purchased the Xbox360 Wireless network adaptor and should have all the equipment to get this thing working. The problem is Idont know how to set up the router as no software for the Mac was included and I dont have a wireless card in my Mac or anything like that. I just wanted to plug the internet connection into the router, connect my Mac to port 1 and have the Xbox be the only thing really wireless. Ihope I explkained that good enough.
I tried just hooking it up and putting the Ethernet cord from my computer in Port 1 but nothing is working. Ieven tried setting up the Xbox360 and it keeps stopping at the DNS section of the setup operation.
I am clueless where to go from here. I called on the phone and they told me that it doesnt support the Mac but everywhere I look it says that the Mac is supported and even the sales guy said I could use my Mac with this model. I am completly lost and dont know who can help me now. What should have been really simple to setup has now been a total nightmare and a waste of 175 bucks.
I would be forever endebted to anyone who can help or even point me in the right direction. Again all I want is to keep the router by my computer and keep the computer connected with a wire. Its the Xbox that I really purchased this for. Plz help.
Thank you!!
Router impaired CustomerWell, for the MAC you will have to manually configure the router. You forgot to mention the name of your ISP. If it’s a cable connection then try this :
Open IE and type http://192.168.1.1 . You will see the login screen.
Leave the username blank and type "admin" for the password. You will find the set up screen. Go to " Mac Address Clone" subtab. Enable it and click on "clone". Save the settings and power cycle If it’s a DSL connection , under the " Basic Setup " page, change the internet connection type as PPPoE and enter the username and password provided by the ISP.
Now, once you have an internet connection on the computer, you can try to use your x-box 360. -

Can I set up Internet access for Mac book air
I am able to set up wireless for my Mac book air but I am looking to set up internet (same as I have with my iPad). Is it possible?
Have you got Home Sharing set up (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819) ? i.e. he may be viewing the content from your computer, not on the actual iPad. If that is the case (which would explain to me him being able to access the videos via the iPod app), then the Restrictions settings that I've already mentioned should also work on that 'remote' content.
Edit : your last reply appeared whilst I was typing/checking this. And no, the Videos/iPod apps can't be passcode protected, you will need to go back into Restrictions and remove the restriction, or if the films are only on your computer and not on the iPad itself you could turn off home sharing on the iPad whilst he's playing the games : Settings > iPod and tap on your account id and/or password on the right under Home Sharing and delete it/ them (re-enter them when you want to re-enable it).
