Help Sharing Music between profiles?

I am computer incompetent so I need a little help..
I have a computer that I am the administrator on and two of my kids each have a profile.
I want to download the music while on my profile and then be able to import or share that music on their profile so they can manage their own ipods and playlists...
I cant seem to make this work...the songs I download show up in my library but not theirs and when I try to import from their profile, it denies me access to my itunes folder from their profile.
any suggestions?

From what I can recall reading you can't update an iPod with music from a shared folder.

Just to summarise what's in the link above:
Method one is to have two Mac or Windows user accounts which by definition would give you two completely separate libraries.
Method two is to set your preferences so that either one or both iPods get updated with only certain playlists within one library: Loading songs onto iPod automatically
Another option when using a single library is to set one or both of the iPods to manual update: Managing content manually on iPod

Confused about sharing music between two ipods

I have a 30GB ipod video, and I bought my husband an 8GB nano for Christmas. I have been searching the threads trying to figure out how we can share music, but I seem to get conflicting information. I understand how to create separate libraries and I think I understand how to allow him access to my library (move itunes music folder into public folder?) but am still unclear about sharing music between ipods. Because in some of the posts, I have read that while you can share music and listen to it via multiple itunes libraries, you can ONLY listen to it on the computer--you cannot get it onto another ipod due to anti-piracy measures.
I know I could create a playlist for him in my library, but I like to autosync my ipod and I don't really want his music on mine, because the songs we BOTH like I've already imported into my itunes library. I was hoping to set up a separate library for him, import my music files into it, then let him delete the artists he's not interested in and add the music he wants that I don't. But I don't want to go through all that if he won't be able to play the shared songs on his own ipod.
I hope all this makes sense. Can someone who shares songs in this way give me some advice? Again, I would like for us to maintain separate libraries but I would like to make mine available to him so he doesn't have to reimport all the CDs I've already imported (and I don't want to waste computer space by having multiple copies of the same songs).

Ver easy to accomplish.
I have one library, two 4GB iPods and ~20GB of music.
Rather than duplicating libraries or creating separate user accounts/sharing music you can't load, etc. which simply takes up space on the disk drive, use the same library and use sync only what you want.
Create playlist(s) of your own music from the library.
Add/remove from those playlists as you want.
Connect your iPod, select it in iTunes and select the Music tab.
Select Sync music, Sync selected playlists and choose what you want.
The way I do it is I create a main playlist (Chris's Music) of music in the library that I like.
I also create a smart playlist (Not Chris's Music) and set it to Match Rule - Playlist is not Chris's Music.
This helps to manage my music by showing all music not in main playlist so I can browse for music I may have missed or now want to add.
I do the same for my daughters iPod except she gets to pick her own stuff.
This way whenever any music is added by either of us, it is available to the other with no problems.

Sharing Music Between Users Accounts on a Single Computer

I know that you can listen to music belonging to another user account on the same computer (as long as that user remains logged in), however, is there a way to COPY (drag and drop) music from one user account to another user account (on the same computer) similar to how it is done between multiple computers with Home Sharing?

Sharing music between different accounts - is this how it works?

The way iTunes shares music between different users seems a bit poor.
I have two user accounts set up on the same PC, with music files accessed by each from the same folder (as described here: How To Share Music Between Different Accounts On A Single Computer).
My main issues are:
1) I have to manually add new music added by the other user instead of it just appearing in iTunes.
2) iTunes doesn't recognise if a music file is already in the joint library, so we end up with two copies of things (particularly tiresome for podcasts).
Am I doing something wrong - maybe there is an easy way around this?
... or do the people at Apple need to do a bit of work here?

By default, any new file or folder created is set to be read+write for the creator, and read-only for everyone else. The file creator can grant write access to other users by changing the permissions on a folder and its contents, as Neil suggests. But you'll have to repeat that process every time a new file is added.
Fortunately, there is a way to automatically grant read+write access to all files created or copied to the folder. First go to System Preferences -> Accounts. Click the + button under the users list. Then, make a new group; calling it "sharegroup" or something similar. Add the users you want to the group.
Then put all the files you want to share into a commonly-accessible folder, such as a subfolder in /Users/Shared.
Then log in to an admin account and open Terminal. Paste in the following two lines:
sudo chmod -R +a "sharegroup allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" \
Press return, then drag the folder into the Terminal window, and press return again. Enter admin password when prompted and press return. That should do it. Everything there now should be fully writable by all users in sharegroup. New files that are *created in* or *copied to* the folder will be the same way.
Files that you *move in* from a different location on the same hard drive won't be, though. So make sure you copy previously existing files into the sharefolder instead of moving them (hold down option key while dragging to copy) so that they get the custom permissions applied.

I have read the instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203 , but I'm still having a problem.
Scenario: Two Ipods, one PC (WinXP), one big music library, originally created and stored directly in C:\My Music, which is accessible to all users of the PC. From my non-admin account, I add folders and files to my itunes library, modify songs and artwork, no problem. Now my son has an iPod, and I would like to be able to share out portions of the C:\My Music library with him. It kind of works. He adds files and folders to his library, on his account, in his itunes. The music is there, but it is somehow protected. No artwork, in fact I get the "artwork is not modifiable" message. Nor can he modify any info in the songs. In a few cases, the artwork comes with the songs, but mostly not. In either case, no info in the songs are modifiable. Neither of our Windows XP user accounts are admin, but why does my account seem to "own" the songs? He's not going to be happy without any artwork in his library or on his ipod.

Sharing music between 2 accounts on one computer

I have 2 accounts on my Windows XP Pro machine, both of which can see and utilise iTunes (though unfortunately, not at the same time - though this is another problem entirely). Both of these users iTunes accounts have been set so that they utilise the same 'shared' music folder. To do this, I have switched both users iTunes Music Folder Location to be:-
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\iTunes Music
I do not seem to be able to add music that already exist as mp3's to this folder using one account and then have them visible on the other users iTunes account. To do this I have to import the mp3's again for this User.
However, importing music from Audio cd's do not seem to suffer the same problem.
This surely can't be right. Has anyone got a workaround for this?
Additional info - I do not use the facility to copy imported tracks into the iTunes Music Folder - purely for space saving reasons, and do not want to use this functionality.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you copied these files to her iTunes directory, you certainly should have seen music in her library when opening iTunes. I suspect that even if you copied these files, when you launched iTunes it was using a different copy of these. Where did you put them? By default, they would be in her ..\My Music\iTunes folder. You can put them anywhere you want, but you have to tell iTunes which one to open. Try this:
1- Re-copy your files to a known folder that is accessible from her account.
2- Log into her account, press and hold the Shift key while you start iTunes.
3- At the "Choose Library or Create Library" prompt, select "Choose Library".
4- Navigate to where you put the "iTunes Library.itl" file from step #1.
This forces her iTunes to use the specific iTunes Library.itl file and should now display the same library that you see in your own iTunes.

Sharing music between diff accounts on 1 computer - what am i doing wrong?

Can someone please help me out? I've just bought an iPod shuffle for my daughter and already have iTunes set up for myself using my own iPod (using Windows XP). Now I want to make all the music I've previously set up in iTunes available to her account.
So I followed the instructions in "How to share music between different accounts on a single computer" (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93195) but when I log on to the other account and start up iTunes, I can't see the music I've copied over. Any ideas why?
I basically copied the "iTunes Music" folder to "C:Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\iTunes\ then opened iTunes on the other account and changed the location via the Edit menu, Preferences, Advanced, Change button. When I do this I can see the underlying folders of music, it just doesn't show up in the iTunes Music Library within iTunes. I've also tried copying the iTunes library files in desperation, but that made no difference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to make a shared folder between profiles?

Hi,
My e-mail is a mess with personal and work e-mail and urgent and unimportant email mixed and I am losing a lot of productivity trying to manage the onslaught. I would like to be able to create a new profile for only important work e-mail.
I'm wondering - Is there a way to share only selected items between profiles? I was thinking if it were possible to create a "shared" folder that syncs when I close one profile, I could put the urgent items in there once every couple days when I check the "catch all" profile and then only deal with those in the "important work" profile. Is something like this possible?

One easy way to share material between accounts, or profiles, is to set up an IMAP-connected account solely for this purpose. You can drag-and-drop into it and from it.
Another approach is nearer to your query.
At '''[http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences_in_Windows,_Linux,_and_Mac Tools|Account Settings]|Local Folders|Account Settings→Local Directory''' you can set what folder the Local Folders pseudo account uses. You could set this to the same folder in both profiles.
Be aware that this folder, if outside of the usual Profile folder, won't be automatically included in profile backup and moving operations; you need to remember what you've done and account for it.
I'd place this folder alongside your other profiles to give it a fighting chance of being remembered. ;-)

Sharing music between users

Hi.
My wife and I just bought a new macbook pro and we want it to be our media hub. We've set it up so we both have seperate logins as her stuff is hers and mine is mine. Can we share some of the same music in iTunes? Not the "purchased" stuff, but the songs we've ripped in from our personal collection. She would still like her own iTunes library to sync on her phone and I do too. But can we just load all of the music in and then share from the same library? I just don't want to have to have the input the same songs twice. I actually have the same question regaring photos in iPhoto. Any help?

Sharing Music between two Apple IDs

My son is buying and iphone for the first time today. The problem is that he has fill his old ipod with music he purchased using my Apple ID. Is there a way to share the iTunes music between both IDs? Can I duplicate the itunes music folder so that his ID has it own music and my would continue to have all of my music? Any assistance would be great.

Sharing Music between two Itunes accounts

I bought my father a nano for Xmas and want to load music from my I tunes account on his nano. But he has his own Itunes account. How can he keep the music I loaded and sync his own Itunes with his nano without deleteing songs? We both have PC with XP.

If you want only one library, use the second method.
There are some disadvantages:
If one of the users deletes a song, the other can't play it no more.
If one user adds a song, the other has to add it to his/her library too.

I'm having trouble sharing music from my computer to my wives computer on the same network different apple id's. This was never a problem in the past. has there been any changes to prevent this?

Whilst you can share the content between two different libraries using a different Apple ID for the iTunes login, they both need to use the same Apple ID for homesharing (iTunes > file > homesharing)

Go to Settings>Messages>Send and receive and make sure you emaill address and phone number do not appear. Delete them if necessary. You can then add her own email address so you can message her.
- The iPod will only use a phone number for Messages if the Account used to set up the iPod includes an iPhone and the iPod has iOS 6. You can't add non-iPhone number to Messages on an iPod.

Sharing music between two itunes libraries on same mac computer

Hi. We have one computer with two Itunes Libraries (when we click on Itunes we use the Option Key so that we can choose the appropriate Library).
What is the best way to move songs between the two Libraries. I tried burning a cd from one library and then uploading to the next - but that didn't work and took forever.

Sharing music between different user (parent - children) on 1 iMac

Hello,
I have my mac since sept 2005, and I'm very pleased with it.
Now my 17 year old daughter loves most of the music I bought on iTunes. Problem. Even when I share my total library, she can't play these songs or put them in her librariy. Except 2 of the 241 ???!!! In the "help" function, there is explained how or what I have to do to share my music with other Mac's (other computers), but I find nothing how I can share my music library with other users on the same iMac. The fact that 2 of the songs I bought, are already in her library is even stranger because i don't know haw I did this.

iTunes -> Preferences -> Sharing: Enable 'Share My Library...'
Leave iTunes running and use Fast User Switching to go to your daughter's account.
In HER account
iTunes -> Preferences -> Sharing: Enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'.
Remember, for this to work you must be logged in AND iTunes must be running in your account.
She will be able to Play the music in your library.
