Help! Simple Servlet Problem

hi,
I am new to servlets. I am trying to connect to database and retrive firstname and lastname and display it. When i run it i get a blank page. Can someone tell me what am i doing wrong.
Here is the code.
import java.io.*;
import javax.servlet.*;
import javax.servlet.http.*;
import java.sql.*;
import javax.servlet.ServletException;
public class DisplayAll extends HttpServlet{
public void doGet(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse res) throws ServletException, IOException{
res.setContentType("text/html");
PrintWriter pw = res.getWriter();
try{
Class.forName("sun.jdbc.odbc.Jdbc.OdbcDriver");
Connection myCon = DriverManager.getConnection
("jdbc:odbc:SCANODBC","SYSDBA", "masterkey");
Statement myStmt = myCon.createStatement();
myStmt.execute("SELECT * FROM PINFO WHERE POLICYNUMBER=B05007584");
ResultSet mySet = myStmt.getResultSet();
while(mySet.next()){
String fname = mySet.getString("FIRSTNAME");
String lname = mySet.getString("LASTNAME");
pw.println("<html>");
pw.println("<body>");
pw.println("Firstname: " + fname);
pw.println("Lastname: " + lname);
pw.println("</body>");
pw.println("</html>");
myStmt.close();
myCon.close();
catch(SQLException e){
catch(ClassNotFoundException e){
}

You are putting <HTML><BODY> inside the while loop. Try the following and also close the statement and connection in "finally" block as opposed to in "try" block itself.
pw.println("<html>");
pw.println("<body>");
while(mySet.next()){
String fname = mySet.getString("FIRSTNAME");
String lname = mySet.getString("LASTNAME");
pw.println("Firstname: " + fname);
pw.println("Lastname: " + lname);
} //end while()
pw.println("</body>");
pw.println("</html>");
}//end try
catch(SQLException e){
finally
myStmt.close();
myCon.close();

    I am having jswdk1.0.1 . My servlets are working.
    Now I want to run my JSP code. My JSP code contains "Hello World" in a loop .The for loop is in a JSP tag. Whatever may be the value of loop(0) , browser shows Hello World only once. In short JSP is not working.
    The problem maybe in classpath variable.( I have Win98, Apache is not working on my m/c)
    Please tell me where & how to write it.

    <% for (....)
    %>
    <h1> hello world<\h1>
    <\body>
    <\html>What do you mean by "the jsp tags are not recognised"?
    If the above code is the exact code you are using, then you need to close the for loop:
    <% for (....)
    %>
    <h1>  hello world<\h1>
    <%
    %>
    <\body>
    <\html>However, the code shouldn't compile if that's the problem...
    Does the JSP code get printed to the screen? or is it in the page source after you've opened the page? If so, then your page isn't getting served properly by the JSP engine - its probably oin the wrong place. What's the URL you use to accesss the page? and what directory is it in?

  • Help simple 3d problem

    Hey,
    I practice director and work simple car game.
    I have done moving and collision and motion but i have one problem.
    Now, player is #box and should be car model.
    I have in 3d scene model car what name is "killercar".
    Problem is how i change this sphere to killercar.
    My code is:
      --boxR = scene.newModelResource("player R",#box)
      --my = scene.newModel("player",boxR)
    These what i try, not work:
    boxR = scene.newModelResource("player R",model("killercar"))

    Is there anyway to reset to the original settings?
    You simply delete the prefs in C:\Users\You\AppData\Roaming. I'm still not clear what exactly you are doing, though. If you are using the 3D extruded text you'll just have to live with it. That stuff is slow as hog... Only the conventional flat text will render faster, but only if you set the comp to the Standard 3D renderer.

    What should I do to correct the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

    Yes, you need to add a servlet -mapping element and adjust your form to submit to the appropriate URL mapping.
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>HelloWorldServlet</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/servlet/Hello</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>

    Nice to hear it works!
    However, one mistake you have in the configuration you provided:
    You put D:\weblogic\BDL\servletclasses in both CLASSPATH and
    weblogic.class.path, remove it from CLASSPATH.
    Cheers - Wei

  • Problem compiling simple servlet

    I am trying to compile a very simple servlet.
    When I do, I get the following error message:
    Package javax.servlet does not exist
    I am using the Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition Version 1.3.1.
    I have downloaded the servlet api (zip file servletapi2_1_1win.zip)
    from Sun's site. I unzipped these files in my lib directory; there are two folders,
    one called api and the other called src. Api and Src directories have their own
    sub-folders, javax/servlet/http etc.
    I am using W2K ; I had to create a CLASSPATH system variable in the environment
    variables section of control panel since there was none defined.
    I added the following line:
    C:\jdk1.3.1_01\lib\api\javax\servlet;C:\jdk1.3.1_01\lib\api\javax\servlet\http;
    I also did this for the PATH statement..
    My servlet looks like this:

    Thanks. I was able to figure it out by specifying the

    C:> javac -classpath
    C:\jdk1.3.1_01\lib\servletapi2_1_1-win.zip\MyServlet.ja
    a
    Apparantly the system doesn't acknowledge the
    environmental variable that
    I created in the control panel; also I have no
    autoexec.bat file...so it
    looks like I have to write out the full path whenever
    I need to compile
    something. Kind of bothersome, but at least it
    works.
    You shouldn't have to do this. What operating system are you using?
    If you are using win2000, winNT or winxp, you should set the classpath in your system environment varialbes. You can also make a config.bat file and put everything in there. Then just run this config.bat file to set up your environment once for every session.
    Here's a file that I have set up on one of our NT machines. I just double click the icon for this file on my shortcut, and it gives me the window where I can compile my java programs.
    Hope this helps.

  • Simple OOP Problem. Help!

    This is just a simple OOP problem that i cant decide on a best
    implementation for.
    im passing an object to an instance of, 'TabbedFrame', which is just
    a frame with a Tabbed Pane in it that is holding custom panels.
    however, these custom panels need access to the object being
    passed to 'TabbedFrame' and to some methods in it.
    i cant make them static however so how do i gain access to them?
    is my only option to pass the 'TabbedFrame' to each panel?
    like - jtabbedpane.add( "Panel 1", new mypanel1(this));
    here is code:
    new TabbedFrame( DataObject );
    public class TabbedFrame{
    public TabbedFrame(DataObject do){
    this.do = do;
    jtabbedpane.add( "Panel 1", new mypanel1() );
    DataObject do;
    public class mypanel1{
    public mypanel1(){
    // need access to DataObject of the 'TabbedFrame' object that instantiated
    // this 'mypanel1' and to some of its methods
    }i would just pass the DataObject to evey panel (there are 12) but
    i also need to be able to call methods in the 'TabbedFrame'.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    Modify mypanel1's constructor:
    public class mypanel1{
    TabbedFrame tf;
    public mypanel1(TabbedFrame tf){
    this.tf = tf;
    // need access to DataObject of the 'TabbedFrame' object that instantiated
    // this 'mypanel1' and to some of its methods
    DataObject theDo = tf.getDataObject();
    tf.someMethod(); // Call method on the TabbedFrame
    }In TabbedFrame:
    public TabbedFrame(DataObject do){
    this.do = do;
    // Modify call to constructor to pass "this" TabbedFrame.
    jtabbedpane.add( "Panel 1", new mypanel1(this) );
    }

  • Simple servlet help - please

    I am trying to write a simple servlet that based on the client ip redirect to a new page.
    I can get the client ip and return it. But what I am not sure how to do next is to take that ip address and search through the text file and return the second field (i.e abc.html)
    I have setup a text file that is tab delimmited that looks like the following:
    XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX abc.html
    XXX.XXX.XXX.123 apps/index.html
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

    A simple solution:
    Format your file correctly and use it as a properties file.(Take a look at the Properties Class: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/api/java/util/Properties.html )
    To check the values, load your file as a Properties:
      public static final String PATH_OF_THE_FILE = "textFile.properties";
      private Properties props;
        InputStream sFile= null;
        try
          sFile= ClassLoader.getSystemResourceAsStream(PATH_OF_THE_FILE );
          props = new Properties();
          props.load(sFile);
          sFile.close();
        }catch(Throwable t){...}..and ask for the property you need:
    String value= props.getProperty(theIP);Another solution would be to load your ip/url pairs into a static HashMap (check HashMap class: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4/docs/api/java/util/HashMap.html )

  • Unable to deploy a simple servlet using WAR file on Oracle9iAS v9.0.3

    Hi All,
    I am facing problem while deploying a simple servlet using WAR file on Oracle 9i App Server.
    I have installed Oracle9iAS J2EE and Web Cache v9.0.3 on Windows 2000 server.
    It includes:
         - Oracle HTTP Server
         - Oracle9iAS Containers for J2EE
         - Oracle9iAS Web Cache
         - Oracle Enterprise Manager
    The release of installed Oracle9iAS is Release 2 (9.0.3)
    I referred following link to Deploy Applications Using WAR file:
         http://otn.oracle.com/products/ias/daily/sept12.html
    As mentioned in this documentation I have followed following steps to deploy WAR file:
    1] I have created a war file by name SimpleServlet.war. In SimpleServlet.war, there is a servlet by name Simple which prints time at which servlet was accessed.
    2] I have modified <ora9ias_home>\j2ee\home\config\application.xml and added following web module entry:
         <web-module id="SimpleServlet" path="../../home/applications/SimpleServlet.war" />
    3] To make this module accessible from over the web, I have modified file
         <ora9ias_home>\j2ee\home\config\default-web-site.xml and added following entry:
         <web-app application="SimpleServlet" name="SimpleServlet" root="/SimpleServlet"/>
    4] I saved both the files and started Oracle HTTP Server and accessed page as below:
              http://<server>:7777/SimpleServlet/Simple
    where Simple is servlet in SimpleServlet.war file.
    In the browser, The page cannot be found is shown to user. I have verified that SimpleServlet.war is extracted to SimpleServlet folder under <ora9ias_home>\j2ee\home\applications folder. I found that Simple.class is stored under WEB-INF/classes folder and web.xml contains correct entry for url pattern for servlet Simple.
    What else could be the problem? Am I placing the war file in wrong place or modifying application.xml or default-web-site.xml in a wrong directory?
    This is very urgent. Please help me with your valuable comments on this.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Need help with getResource() problem under weblogic 6.1

    Hey all,
              I've got a serious problem that I can't figure out. This should be really
              simple - but it's alluding me. I have an ear file with a number of servlets
              inside it. This ear file also contains a resource that my servlets want to
              read from. This resource is located (within the ear file) at:
              "/content/structure/a.txt". The file contains raw ascii.
              To have my serlvet read from this file, I thought it would be as simple as:
              URL content =
              servlet.getServletContext().getResource("/content/structure/a.txt");
              // pw is an instance of PrintWriter
              pw.print(content.getContent());
              However, when I execute the above I get the following exception:
              java.lang.NullPointerException
              at
              java.net.URLConnection.stripOffParameters(URLConnection.java:1011)
              at java.net.URLConnection.getContentHandler(URLConnection.java:979)
              at java.net.URLConnection.getContent(URLConnection.java:581)
              OK, so fine - I figure that I'm new to this. The documentation for the URL
              class tells me there is another way around this. It says that rather then
              calling getContent() directly, I can open a stream on the URL and read from
              that, like so:
              URL content =
              servlet.getServletContext().getResource("/content/structure/scenario2resourc
              es.txt");
              FileInputStream fis = content.openStream();
              but when I do this I get the following different exception:
              java.lang.ClassCastException: weblogic.utils.zip.SafeZipFileInputStream^M
              at Utility.writeFileToOutput(Utility.java:134)^M
              Apparently this thing is trying to return a web-logic-specific stream (which
              is incompatible with an FileInputStream) - which I don't want to use or
              learn about since I want my stuff to work under other webservers.
              Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? This should be simple.

    Wenjin,
              I appreciate your response. I tried treating it as a normal InputStream -
              but it didn't make any difference. Here's what I did:
              URL content =
              servlet.getServletContext().getResource("/content/structure/scenario2resourc
              es.txt");
              InputStream is = (InputStream)content.getContent();
              And here's the exception:
              java.lang.NullPointerException^M
              at
              java.net.URLConnection.stripOffParameters(URLConnection.java:1011)^M
              at
              java.net.URLConnection.getContentHandler(URLConnection.java:979)^M
              at java.net.URLConnection.getContent(URLConnection.java:554)^M
              at java.net.URL.getContent(URL.java:807)^M
              at Utility.writeFileToOutput(Utility.java:134)^M
              You can see that it is definitely breaking somewhere in getContent().
              If you have any other ideas, I'd appreciate hearing about them.
              -john
