HELP! SLAVING EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT TO LOGIC 8..0.1

Hello to all!
....So I have just recently made the switch to logic 8 from hardware.
I still have two hardware keyboards that I use that I would like to slave to logic 8. (Roland Fantom X7, Yamamha Motif XS)
When I open and external instrument track in logic it recognizes the Fantom (which is also my controller going midi out into my digi oo2 rack midi in 1) but it is not recognizing the Motif XS. (Its not even in the list with the fantom)
The digi002 has 2 midi outputs. Out 1 is going to the fantom midi in 1
Out 2 is going to the motif midi in 1
I have everything connected properly in the Audio Midi Setup. Cables are connected as I described above. I even ran the "Test Setup" in the Audio Midi Settings and the motif made noise as i click on it s symbol. But it just wont show! The fantom makes noise too when tested and works just fine in logic 8. Im running Pro tools 7.3 so thats the core audio driver version also........ CAN ANYONE HELP? THANKS!

glad you got it going! David is very cool and his vids are great. • How to set up external instrument in logic pro x

how do you set up external instrument in logic pro x without triggering the instrument twice - by the external instrument GM device to control playback and playing the instrument itself?  thank you

I use the local off method but there is another way.
Go to Settings/MIDI and use the  "Instrument Without MIDI Thru Function" selector to pick the device and channel your hardware keyboard is transmitting on.
Settings are on a Per Song basis, they're not global like Preferences are.

  • Using EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT plug normally has latency BUT NOW FULLY SOLVED ???

    Hi,
I use alot of outboard synths and I use the EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT plug from Logic9 for this.As MIDI destination I choose my synth (Elektron Monomachine) and as AUDIO INPUT 11-12 , nothing spectacular there.
When I play this external instrument in Logic by hand using my usb controller keyboard everything plays in sync, but when I record it it has latency...Again this is normal (I think??) because I browsed alot of Logic groups and came to the conclusion that the EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT-plug isn't delay compensated,am I right? Even after rigid quantizing the recorded midi sounds a bit late, sluggish.
So the recorded midi has a delay, but THEN I FOUND OUT THIS : If instead in the EXTERNAL INSTRUMENT-plug I choose GM-device (don't know how this got in my midi destination list) instead of Elektron Monomachine as MIDI destination the midi is SPOT ON !!!! (playback)
Can somebody clarify this, this is very strange....the only downside to this is the fact that when I use the GM-device the midi is send to all my midi-synths at the same time....But what the heck,if I can record without almost no latency :-)
What am I missing,I feel like an idiot :-)

I've always used External MIDI tracks to control outboard instruments - it used to work perfectly for me, mostly using an Akai Z8 sampler and various synth modules. I'm becoming more inclined to doing everything in my computer though, these days.
The I/O plug-in has a Ping function - in other word, its sends a small packet of data to your external device and measures the amount of time it takes to come back, if you've got connections going both ways - I haven't used it, but I suppose that may help you with the latency problem, but using external MIDI tracks gives you all the basic stuff you want to do.

  • External Instrument problem, in serious need of help!!??

    Dear all,
I have a really big problem... I can't get the external instrument plugin to work properly.
My setup is mostly below, but I wish I could post a diagram. Here's what's going on.
I have my PB, my X-Station, my CME UF5 and my M-Audio midisport 2x2
Connected to my PB are: FirePod by FW, Dongle by USB and Midi2x2 by USB
The outs of my X-Station are going in to the Pod, and Logic sees input using the external plugin telling it to get input from ins 3-4, and I can hear it. Great.
On the transport it shows midi in from my UF5 (controller keyboard) and plays its internal instruments fine.
What I need to be able to do, through this setup is have my X-Station working from midi respones through Logic. I can plug my UF5 straight in, and I get it to play. What I want to be able to do is play my UF5 or have a pre-recorded midi part play the X-Station. I can hear sound from it and all.
My problem is is getting midi TO the X-Station from within Logic, and in the section where one should be able to select ports/hardware etc in the external plugin, I cannot see my midisport whose out is connected to the X-station. I ought to be able to play it from Logic with, for example, the caps keys. I know this is possible, unless it is impossible with my midisport, but I was under the impression that it would. I just need to see its outs to assign in the external plugin...
I hope I have made sense, much appreciated guys, I know I must have overlooked something. Maybe someone with fresher eyes (and an imagination, knowing myself) might be able to help.
    Cheers, best, Fred

Open the Environment. Select the MIDI Instrument layer. From the local New menu, select Instrument (top of menu). New icon appears in the layer. Select it, rename the icon to X-Station. In the parameters adust the port to the port # the X-Station is on and adjust the MIDI channel you want to send MIDI on.
Now go back to your External Plugin, select MIDI Destination-MIDI Instruments-X-Station.
    Your there.
You may want to set this up as a Multi-Instrument, but this will get you going.

  • Logic Pro X External Instrument Recording Problem

    Hi,
I am currently trying to record an external instument in logic pro x but coming across serious latency issues. I am just trying to figure out if the problems lies with my audio interface or the Daw?
I am currently using the Bass station 2 as my external instrument and the Scarlett 2i2 as my interface. My audio set up is below, can you point me in the direction as to where i might be going wrong?

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes trying to record the Audio from my Bass station 2 in to my scarlett 2i2. Currently using Yosemite 10.10.1.
I have tried rebooting and reducing the buffer to 128 but still having the same problem. Ive also tried drawing notes manually in to the piano roll but its still out of sequence and quantize only seems to make it worse when played back.
Recording straight in to an audio track seems to work fine but recording in to an external instrument channel doesn't.
I have to a screen shot of the piano roll so you can get an idea how much its out of sequence, its difficult to explain.

  • External Instrument Plug-in Bug

Anyone else able to reproduce this bug in the External Instrument Plug-in with Logic X?
    1. Create External MIDI track using External Instrument Plug-in
    2. Save project & quit Logic X.
    3. Reopen Project
    4. Now the External MIDI track is triggering a different MIDI Destination port to the one that was originally assigned (but is still labelled as the originally assigned MIDI Destination port in the External Instrument Plug-in
    5. Toggle MIDI Destination to nothing, then back to originally assigned MIDI port. It will once again function correctly
    6. This behaviour will repeat every time the project is reopened for all External MIDI tracks
Please note this behaviour does NOT occur on the LEGACY External Instrument Plug-in from Logic 9.
I'm using a MOTU micro lite MIDI interface.
Yes, I've submitted my report to Logic Pro Feedback

    Hi Peter,
the audio INs can be renamed under I/O Labels ... says theory. My Logic X (now Under Maverics) simply crashes when I try to open the I/O label menu.
As for External MIDI instruments, after the project restart the problem perceives. It always map the external instrument (configuration saved as a Logic X preset) to first MIDI OUT port available in the list. So I have to open all external instruments plugins and manually switch the preset to the device used for the track. Funny is that when the external instrument is opened the External instruments preset name and audio INs are correct, but the MIDI destination is always assigned to MIDI port 1. So I have to open External instruments library, select the correct preset (same as opened on screen) and it switches the correct MIDI Out ports.
I think that there might be a problem with the previous Logic 9 configuration files that Logic X incorporated. Maybe something should be deleted and clearly installed. If anybody knows which file contains the I/O and MIDI information and might be deleted helps.

  • External instrument not hearing playback

I have my Alesis DM8 hooked up via USB to Logic and I launched a external instrument plug in I've selected the proper Midi channel and ave output coming out of Logic the midi information records but I can't hear playback I have the DM8 mapped to the EXS24 but I would like to use the sounds in the DM8 module I've seen other threads on this issue but it I can't seem to find a solution just trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong ...

It is now in the Utilities Folder

  • HELP! External MIDI is playing EARLY compared to the audio tracks!

    Hi Guys
I have a project in L9 which has about 12 audio tracks, each running a few effects (fairly basic ones, nothing too heavy).
Tonight I am recording a rhythm part on an external MIDI device (my Kurzweil synth). I'm quantising this part to 1/8 notes, and in the piano roll editor, it's lining up perfectly after quantization.
However, when I play back the project, the MIDI is all EARLY!
I've tried soloing just the MIDI and the click, and the MIDI part runs uniformly early compared to the click track.
I believe this has something to do with the delay compensation that is in effect across all the audio channels... what's happening is that all the audio content is being delayed so all the tracks sync with each other. But for some reason, MIDI is not part of this delay compensation, and is playing in perfect time, and hence sounding early compared to the audio material.
I've done a test new project with just one MIDI track, and when quantized, it DOESN'T suffer this problem... ie, it aligns perfectly with the click track.
Is there any way to get external MIDI instruments to be part of the delay compensation process? Or is there some other solution to this issue?
Really desperate here as this has come out of the blue and I can't think of any way to solve it!
    Thanks heaps guys,
    Mike

Is this something new for Logic 9?
I don't know, I have never used external MIDI with Logic (8 or 9) - but think it is new, yes.
I wonder if there's a way to set the global default for MIDI so that it always has delay compensation? I can't see why anyone would want to use an external MIDI device and not have it in perfect time with their audio material!
Yes, there is. You'll have to set it up in AMS first (choose *New Device*, and then configure the device and cable it) In Logic, you'll have to go into the Environment. You need a *Standard Instrument Object* for a monotimbral device, a, *Multi-Instrument Object* for multitimbral devices and a *Mapped Instrument object* for Drummodules. Explanation starts on pg 1082 of the LP9 pdf manual.
Once it is all setup, you can make a template of it, or you can import the Environment layer into new projects.

  • New external instrument bug? (please test)

Just updated to Logic 9.0.1 and i think i've found a new bug with the external instrument plug-in. When i adjust the "input volume" parameter the slider shoots down to "-24 db" and however much i try to adjust this, it snaps back to this "-24 db" setting. I cant adjust it at all!!!
    Can someone else please confirm?

I've heard people complaining about some of the lack of testing that goes on, but in this case it's kind of funny; no one thought to just move the sliders to check?
I mean. Wow. Really. Just. Wow.
It's kind of hilarious, at least with the I/O plugin - since latency compensation has been the feature which is the catalyst for many an angry PT vs LP debate. To not get that simple plugin right on the first get go only reaffirms what a lot of people already think about LP (Bare in mind I'm an LP only user - but one, hopefully, with an open mind and a sense of humour.)
    Edit:
I should add that the "pings" I did do with the I/O plugin saw a sample offset of +1. Which is beyond negligible really. That means Logic's roundtrip calculations were already pretty accurate.

  • External instrument plugin - how-to?

Does anyone know how to do the following using the external instrument plugin to control hardware synths?
    1. Bank/Program changes?
    2. Sysex?
Do I still need a dedicated midi-track for this? This kind of defeats the purpose with this plugin? It would be great if it was possible for the external instrument plugin to handle these tasks!

  • No External Instrument Plugin in the List

    Hi,
I've searching for a while but can't find any info regarding the External Instrument plugin. The manual says it's supposed to be under Instruments > Logic > External but there it's not there. I'm running DTDM + DAE combination. Would that be a problem?
My external synths bounce OK using DAE StereoInput objects but that way I can only apply TDM inserts to it and no native processing.
    Any solution to this?

wonder if there are any stability issues with multiple drivers...
In the manual they do say this:
We strongly recommend that you do not attempt to use more than two audio engines simultaneously within Logic Pro. The strain on the PCI bus will cause too many problems, and will generate a number of DAE error messages.
Your first choice should be DAE in conjunction with DTDM. If necessary, choose DAE and Core Audio.

  • Playback with the external instrument plug-in

Hi. Sorry to bother you guys with this Q but I'm having some problems with the External Instrument Plug-in. I seem to have no problems recording in this way from an external synth but the information won't play back. Any info would be most appreciated.
    Cheers

ok now i'm a bit confused when I plug in my synth via the external instrument plug-in the sounds of my synth come up in logic as would one of its internal synths. i.e. the info is recorded as midi and can therefore be quantized and the velocity altered etc. So my goal here is to be able to use my own synth patches but be able to quantize them in logic ( which of course you can't do if its recorded as an audio file ). Now I'm not a tech person so perhaps this isn't possible and I'm just totally of the mark here but I figure it should be because when i use the E.I. Plug-in my synths sounds come out and the data does get recorded on an audio instrument file, and from there I can quantize it. The only thing is when I go to play back that region I get zip. The info is there, I can see it but there's no sound.

  • Where can i find the sample instruments in logic pro x.the proper plugins

Where can i find the sample instruments in logic pro x.the proper plugins. or third party plugins too where can i find them and how in logic pro x can anyone help me please.

My understanding is that if it was purchased throught the App Store, then there is no requirement for a serial number. At which point does it ask you for the serial?

  • Cannot find "Midi Destination" drop menu in External Instrument control window...

I'm using Logic X Pro, and am attempting to use Sylenth as a VST. In order to do so, I watched this video tutorial...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4I-mNj-TLGM at minute mark 5:39, the External Instrument control window is displayed, and a drop down menu item titled "Midi Destination" is shown. I am not seeing that on my Logic.
Can anyone please speak to this? Can you see this option in your window?
    Thanks so much.
