HELP: something is taking up 700G of storage on my new computer and I don't know what it is!
I have no idea what this item is and I can't seem to find it anywhere in my normal search. In my storage usage, it categorizes this item as "other", but I have no idea. And this just happened in the last 2 weeks. Any tips as to how I can search this out?
Thanks!

Are you running Time Machine?
If so, that space is due to Time Machine snapshots.
No. There's a separate category for them, labelled "Backups" and shown in purple.
Connect your Backup drive and a regular backup cycle will remove them from your internal drive.
No. Local snapshots are entirely separate and independent of regular Time Machine backups. They're made whether the normal TM volume is available or not, and are deleted on a regular schedule (or when the disk gets over 80% full), again whether the TM volume is connected or not.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #30 for details.

Something keeps trying to download on my mac and I don't know what it is. It is not in the apple store and just comes out nowhere and request for my password to download something and I don't know what it is. How to make this stop? It pops up every single day.
Erica,
I can, with 99.99% certainty, tell you that you are absolutely right in not wanting to download or install this "Helper," whatever it is (but we can be equally certain it would not "help" anything).
I cannot comment as to Oglethorpe's recommendation of 'adwaremedic'; I am unfamiliar with it. His links to the Apple discussion and support pages warrant your time and attention.
It might be really simple -- Trying looking in your Downloads folder, trash anything that you don't know with certainty is something you want to keep, and then Secure Empty your Trash. Then remove the AdBlock extension, LastPass, and Web of Trust extensions to Safari and re-boot. If the issue goes away, still be extraordinarily careful in the future.
Unfortunately, it's probably not going to be that simple to get rid of, in which case I'd then try the line by line editing in HT203987.
I have no further suggestions (other than a complete wipe and re-install...but that's a pain because trying to restore from Time Machine would simply ... restore the Mal).
For the rest of us, please post when you find a solution.
Best.

Help, somebody has turned the restrictions on on my daughters iPad mini and we don't know the pass code to turn it off. She can't use iTunes because of them being turned on. I have tried backing it up to a laptop and then restoring it to factory settings but you need the pass code to do this....any ideas how I can turn it off or reset it, anything that might help its driving me potty...
Many thanks
JoRecovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button.
5. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: You need to be patient and repeat the above many times to recover your iPad. Data will be lost. -
I just want to know that if I buy an iphone 4S here in melbourne can i use it in china?
i don`t know whether it`s locked or not and i don`t know what`s the network in china as well.
Can somebody please help?
I am really in a hurry to know it.
Thanks a lot.
P.S: For the iphone 4S. is there any difference for the one from online shop or the actual store?iPhones purchased from the online Apple Store in Australia will be unlocked. To the best of my knowledge, unlocked iPhone are not available from the physical Apple Stores at this time, though you can call the Apple Store in Melbourne and inquire.
Note that the warranty on iPhones is not international, so if you purchase an iPhone in Australia and it needs service, you would have to ship the iPhone to someone in Australia to take or send to Apple for service and then ship it back to you.
Regards.
(Note for any readers: this is an old thread and I posted before noticing the date, but decided to leave my reply in case anyone else finds the thread and has the same question). -

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select ReinstallLion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from
the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is
three times faster than wireless. -
i forgot my security questions and i don't know what to do to reset them because i can't answer them, help please!!
You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

HELP!!! I washed my IPod and I don't know what to do!!!
Help!! I washed my IPod and I don't know what to do. It got thrown in the washing machine by accident and it was a very special gift from my boyfriend. I just feel terrible. I have let it dry completly and still nothing happens when I try to turn it on. Even if you could tell me where to call or to send it to get it repaired I would appreciate it SO MUCH. I don't know what I'll do if I can't get it repaired. Also it has been engraved so I don't know if that will have anything to do with repairing it, I'm not sure how they do things. Any info will help!
Have you tried charging it? If that doesnt work then I'm affraid you will probably either have to service your iPod or buy a new one. Service info @ http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/
Hope you get it fixed. -
please help.
You uncheck the music in your iTunes library on your computer and along with sync only checked songs and videos selected under the Summary selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, only checked songs in your iTunes library will be transferred to your iPhone or remain on your iPhone and the unchecked songs in your iTunes library that are currently on your iPhone will be removed when syncing.
Or make use of iTunes playlists and choose selected playlists, albums, artists under the Music selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and select the playlists below that you want transferred to your iPhone.
