HELP: Somewhat complex question on backing up to external HD.

Hi,
I am Running a MacPro Dual core Xeon 2.66 and running Leopard and Snow Leopard on 2 different HDs.
I am using TM to back up each to 2 different External CalDigit VR Mini's using eSATA.
I also wanted to have a Bootable BU of each OS drive in case of drive failure.
I used a 1 TB CalDigit VR set to RAID 1 and partitioned it 550GB/500GB one partition for each OS drive backup.
I made what was supposed to be a bootable clone of the SL drive using CCC.
To test it I restarted while holding down the option key... Only the drives for Leopard and Snow Leopard showed as boot choices. The cloned partition on the external CalDigit that supposedly had a bootable copy of SL did not appear.
I rebooted into SL and found that while my internal drives appear on my desktop with icons that look like Hard Drives, the 2 partitions on my external CalDigit look like yellow rectangles with firewire symbols on them... I figure that this might have something to do with the MacPro mot seeing them as bootable on startup.
I partitioned the external drive in Leopard and the CalDigit shows as GUID though each individual partition does not. Can separate partitions on external drives not be set up as bootable backups or have I not set the backups up properly, ergo the Yellow drive icons on the desktop?
Any ideas?

There are very very few controllers for Mac Pro that are bootable.
Some Mac Pro can use #5 & 6 SATA ports run external; else there is USB and FireWire.
You have a good image of the system, you can even put images on sparse disk images. And you can restore those as needed.
The most important boot volume I find to have around is a small emergency partition for running maintenance programs. And only takes ~20GB.
The external enclosure may prevent booting even if it is on SATA ports using #5 & 6 ports.
Some external cases are not supported by 2-channel cards like Sonnet E2P to begin with.
CCC keeps being updated. I switched over to SuperDuper after yrs of use of CCC.
Snow Leopard made changes to partitions, and to RAID, and I strongly recommend any RAID or drive even if it is to boot Leopard or both, to be formatted with the latest version of Disk Utility.

  • Help with restoring files from back-up to external hard-drive

My laptop died. Took it to Best Buy for evaluation. They had to send it out; but (for $150) were able to back up the laptop's data on an external hard drive.
I have tried to restore my files to the new laptop, but can't figure out how...except to copy them over. Need some help.
The external hard drive included Backup Now EZ. Thought it would be easy, but I am stumped. Tried the "restore" feature, but am missing the boat somewhere...because it didn't work.
    Thanks.

That program is made by NTI.

  • Questions on backing up to external hd

I need to make some space on my hard drive. Music and photos are filling it much too fast. I bought a Maxtor One Touch II, 200 gig to do this with. It is USB 2.
I have searched the forums, and the more I read, the more confused I get.
If I am understanding things right, for both music and photos, I need to go to my home folder and copy the music folder and the pictures folder to the external hard drive. Is this correct? Do I just do drag and drop. (By the way I have the latest version of iTunes, but only iPhoto 4. )
Then, if I add some more music or more photos, how do I move them without copying everything twice? I know there are syncing programs out there, but the problem is that once I put some of the music/photos on the external hard drive, I would like to wipe them off my iMac drive. For instance, Christmas music. I would like to have the playlist preserved, but most of the year there is no point in having Christmas music taking up space on my iMac hard drive, so I would like to eliminate it. Perhaps I am misunderstanding, but it seems that with most syncing programs, if I delete it from my iMac library (after copying to ext hd) and then try to sync it later, I will lose the Christmas music on my ext. hard drive, as the sync program tries to make the external look like the iMac library. (I hope I am explaining this well.)
It is the same question with photos. I want to save a lot of albums to my ext. hd, and then remove them from my iMac library. But then, when I make new photos, I want to back up just the new ones to the ext. hd.
I assume I do the same with documents. My question with documents is when I do a new document, can I just drag the document to the appropriate folder on the external hard drive? For example, if when I copy my documents folder from my home folder, one of the folders in it is “Recipes” and later I write down a new recipe for say chocolate cake, can I just drag the chocolate cake document to the recipe folder on the external hard drive?
As a precaution, I am actually pretty good about backing up things to cds, so there is a copy of most everything already. Just on a zillion cds.
Apologies for this being so long and wordy, I just could not figure out an easy way to explain it all.
    Thanks very much in advance.

You would have gotten much better performance out of a Firewire drive. Too late now, I guess.

Yes, drag and drop will work fine. There are also some programs out there for managing iTunes and iPhoto libraries. You can probably find some on www.versiontracker.com

You probably will want to move your iTunes and iPhoto libraries to the external drive; then you have to tell iTunes and iPhoto where to look for the new library locations. That way you just keep all your photos and music on the external drive all the time. It's easy to change the location of your iTunes library in iTunes Preferences (last pane, I think). I don't know how to do it in iPhoto.
I assume I do the same with documents. My question
with documents is when I do a new document, can I

Documents are generally very small files. But just as with your music and photos, you could just save them to the external drive in the first place and not keep them on your internal drive at all.
As a precaution, I am actually pretty good about
backing up things to cds, so there is a copy of most

Yeah, backing up to a hard drive is much faster and more convenient than backing up to CDs.
You could also just replace your internal hard drive with a bigger one...

the best place would probably be in the Lenovo 3000 & Essential notebooks board; it's the correct board for your system and who knows after searching through it you may find an existing thread on the same subject??

    Hi guys!
I really need help. I tried to back up the data on my iphone 4 on the iTunes version 11.01 but failed.
The error message read : the backup was corrupt or not compatible with iPhone. can anyone advise me on this,
as I urgently need to back up my phone in anticipation for my iPhone 5.
    Greatly appreciated!

this usally happens when the backup you tool was from an old ios version. Two options that you can try is
    1.  Delete the back up by going to edit> preferences> devices & delete back up on itunes & try backing up again
    2.  Update the ios software of the iphone4 & then take a back up. then try restoring

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

a while ago i backed up my ipod touch 4g and yesterday it was acting up so i restored it and it deleted ALL of my pictures so can anyone help me to get them back?
    currently running iOS 4.3.5

If you restored from backup all the photos in your camera roll that were in the backp should be restored to our iPod.  However, photos that are synced to the iPod are not in the backup. You will have to resyc them to the iPod.  If the synced photos are no longer on the computer then the photos are lost.

Iphoto is a different paradigm than you're used to. I don't understand why you are trying to transfer your edited photos back to an external disk.

My UPAD lite does not start after recent update. I have lots of info in it. Can anybody help me to get it back? Can I somehow undo the update? Thanks

    "UPAD lite?"
I expect that you mean some version of iPad.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

Did you add or change your credit card details on your iTunes account when downloading them ? If you have then each time that you do so a small temporary store holding charge may be applied to check that the card details are correct and valid and that it's registered to exactly the same name and address as on your iTunes account - it should disappear off your account within a few days or so.

You don't view your calendar, on your Mac, that way. You sync your calendar to your Mac using iCloud, or iTunes. Read here:

    Hi,
Please delete my question about backing up. I already found my answer. Just wanted to make sure that it was okay to backup the iPod_Control folder. I've read that other people have done this and re-imported back to iTunes. Here's the question I submitted. When I get my iPod back in order I am gonna backup the iPod_Control folder .

No urgent reason to delete it. Just reply to yourself as above, if you care to, and then mark your own answer as correct. You won't get any points, but it will be clear you are closing out the topic.
