Help sorting iphone contacts

Has anybody fond a way to sort contacts by company?
I only see by name first or last only.
Am I missing something or is apple... PLEASE HELP!
I dont wont to delete 1000 names just to get the company name to show up in contacts...

One more thing about groups: each contact can live in more than one group. In addition to all the regular groups I use, I also created a "companies" group just to handle this issue. First I made a smart group, set the condition to be "company is assigned", which populated it with all contacts that have a company listed in their contact info. Then I made a regular "companies" group, dragged all the contacts in the smart group into the new group, and synced. So now if I'm looking for a company, I just choose the companies group and look through those.

Of course if you are both connected to the same iCloud account you have the same contacts - what did you expect?. The contacts live on the server and are read from there by the devices; so as you've both managed to sync your contacts up to iCloud they are now inextricably mixed. You can only delete your contacts by deleting individual ones, and doing that will delete them from your phone as well.
You can only unravel this by
1. In the iCloud contacts page at http://icloud.com, select all the contacts, click on the cogwheel icon at bottom left and choose 'Export vCard'.
2. Sign out of System Preferences>iCloud
3. Create a new Apple ID and open a new iCloud account with it for your own use.
4. Import the vCard back into the iCloud contacts page.
5. Go to http://icloud.com and sign in with the original ID. This is now his ID. Work through the contacts individually deleting the ones you don't want him to have. When done sign out and advise him to change his password.
6. Go to the new iCloud account and delete his contacts individually.
Of course if you have also been syncing calendars and using the same email address there are problems with doing this.

New to iPhone and need help with syncing contacts.

I know how to change the settings in the iTunes view so that I can set it to sync, but when I started the transfer of my iPhone contacts it tells me that 25% of my contacts will change. What does this mean? Does this mean that the contacts on my iPhone will change, or the contacts in my Address Book on my MBP will change?
I'm a bit confused by this. I don't want to lose my address book info (mostly e-mail contacts) and I don't want to contaminate my iPhone contacts with the data in my Address Book.

One alternative would be to set up iCloud and then sync your contacts there. This would keep them on www.iCloud.com (see http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/ to set this up). Another would be to sync them with Google by setting up a gmail account as and exchange account, which enables contact and calendar syncing. How to Control the Sorting Order of iPhone Contacts from Outlook?

In a series of editing steps we've loaded ca. 1,900 personal and business contacts from Outlook into a 1st gen iPhone with 2.0.1 software on it. To our surprise we found that while most of the entries were listed and sorted by company, certain entries were listed and sorted by the person's name. It looked random and there didn't seem to be any way to control it on the iPhone.
While troubleshooting the problem we synced up the iPhone with an empty Address Book on a MacBook Pro and found that the sort order flag was indeed set differently on these entries. When we changed the sorting flag of a contact in the Mac's Address Book to "Company" it also changed on the iPhone after the next sync.
Problem: In our business environment it is impossible to switch to Macs for contact administration. We need to do it from Outlook. This is one of several features needed for the adoption of iPhones.
Question: Is there a way to control this flag on the individual iPhone contact entries from Outlook Contacts?

Well, I think we figured it out.
Outlook doesn't offer a sorting flag on person or company name. Instead it uses a separate "File As" string. The problem with our contacts was that this "File As" string was frequently edited to be something else than exactly the personal or company name, e.g. it was set to an abbreviated company name. Once we set the "File As" to any of the defaults offered, i.e. person or company name, the sorting flag in iPhone was properly set through the synchronization.
Obviously, the application logic compares the content of these fields in Outlook and decides how to set the flag. If it can't find the company name in "File As" it defaults to person.
This was an expensive holdup for us. It cost us 2 man days to figure it out. Is there any place where such application logic is described?

In contacts on the iphone I only see the email addresses.
Yet in Outlook I have email, snail mail and phone numbers.

I did it once, didn't work so deleted all the contacts from the phone and tried again. Same result. I have a PC using Windows 7 64 bit.

You can't access an Exchange account via ActiveSync with the Address Book and iCal on your Mac.
You can access a MM account with Outlook on your PC at work and keep your MM email account server stored mailboxes synced between your PC at work, your iPhone, and the MM "cloud". Not sure about syncing MM contact info and calendar events with Outlook at the same time with an Exchange account.
This will not provide for syncing your Exchange account contact info and calendar events with the Addresss Book and iCal on your Mac because the accounts are separate.
You can access an Exchange account and a MM account at the same time with the iPhone's mail client, and sync contact info and calendar events over the air with both accounts at the same time. You can view combined contact info or separately for each account, and the same for calendar events.

I just discovered that I am having this problem too!
I figured that there was a problem when trying to pair instead if being asked to input the code on my iPhone, I was simply asked to 'Confirm that the PIN code XXXXX is being shown on the MacBook Pro'
On the iPhone, the MacBook Pro is then shown as 'Not Connected'
When I click on it on the iPhone, I get the error:
'Connection Unsuccessful'
'MacBook Pro is not supported'
'Forget this device'
I don't have any other issues with headphones and headsets connected to both devices and other phones, a Samsung and two Nokias, connecting to the MBP.
There seems to be no way to initiate pairing from the iPhone.
Frankly, this is ridiculous.

Syncmyride. That's what's having the problem. If it were handing the data properly, it wouldn't be a problem. You should not have to remove data from your contacts in order for an app that is accessing the contact data to work correctly. This is a bug in syncmyride. It has nothing to do with iCloud or anything else that Apple controls.

Help, New iphone. Lost contacts!

Hi I would really appriciate some help. My Iphone 4 was broken, so before I took it to the apple store to get a new one I backed up my data and updates my phone on my girlfriends macbook pro. She also has an Iphone 4, which she regualarly updates. When I went to the apple store they replaced my Iphone 4. so when I went to set it up on my girlfriends macbook pro it was only allowing her to set the iphone up to restore from her iphone, and not my own. so we decided to set it up as a new phone instead. but now this means I have lost all my contacts, photos etc. Nothing was really important apart from my contacts. Does any1 know a way I can get them back. My girlfriend has already searched alot of forum sites to check where the back up is stored and my original back up from my first iphone is no where to be seen. Please Help!

Although contacts are included with your iPhone's backup, contacts are designed to be synced with a supported application on your computer. This can be with the Address Book on your Mac and is selected under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
Were you syncing contacts with the Address Book on your Mac with your old iPhone and if not, why not?
You can't selectively choose which data included with your iPhone's backup is transferred to a new iPhone, or restored on your iPhone when restoring the iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup. It is all or none.
If all contact info that was available on your old iPhone was not included with the iPhone's backup that was transferred to your new iPhone and you weren't syncing contacts with a supported application on your computer via the iTunes sync process, the contacts may be lost.
If your old iPhone is still available along with the contact info, sync your old iPhone with the Address Book on your Mac, which is selected under the Info tab for the iPhone sync preferences. Follow this by selecting the same under the Info tab for your new iPhone sync preferences followed by a sync.

Something doesn't make any sense here, because iMessage ONLY works between you and anyone using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5, you couldn't iMessage someone that DIDN'T meet those requirements, if you wanted to. Are you positive this contact does not meet the requirements to iMessage?

Help. My iPhone contact list is a mess.

I use the iPhone's "mail" App to connect to my Outlook, Yahoo mail, Gmail and also sync with my MacBook. Now the address books from all 4 sources are on my iPhone and they are all separate entries. I kind of expected the iPhone "Contacts" would have merged those entries during the import process or at least prompt me to merge them. No, it just silently created a mess for me.
I have heard about some 3rd party apps that will merge contact list entries. I have also heard that some apps are secretly stealing user info without telling their users. So I am shy away from downloading apps to perform tasks that Apple should have done.
Can someone tell me a way to clean up the mess by using Apple's tools alone?
Perhaps I can sync all the entries into my MacBook's Address Book first and do the clean up on the MacBook.
Then from one consolidated source, I can update my Outlook, Yahoo Mail, Gmail and iPhone afterwards.
But does Address Book support a merge function?
Please give me step by step instructions if you know how to do these. (both merging and they redistributing the list)

Yikes! Let's work on getting you down to one copy of each contact, nanalovespopa. How do you back up your contacts? Do you use Backup Assistant Plus, Blackberry Link, an alternate method, or a combination of a few?

my son has an iphone.
i keep getting my husbsnds ipad and my sons iphone contacts coming over to my recent contscts. annoying. i think i stopped my husbsnds contscts from intruding. but cant seem to figure how to stop the sons iphone4 from making his recent messages come over to my two devices as recently contscted people.
what am i missing and where???
and... my husbands ipad music is coming over to my ipad. iits more than just an icloud problem i think.

It sounds like you are wanting to stop certain data from syncing between your families devices. From what you describe it seems that the same iCloud account is signed in on them. You can configure each device to sync only certain content with iCloud or each other by disabling the options you do not want to sync on either your iPad, or their devices. As I was using the phone, the phone went through a 'supernatural' moment - flickering etc. and then the contacts was empty. Even the favourites had numbers and not names.
I shut down the phone and restarted it but to no avail.
Now, just as suddenly, the contacts are back! But not all of them.

If you have not back up your iPhone, you may try the “Recover from iOS Device” mode with the iPhone contacts recovery software.

My iPhone contacts/notes disappear at random times. Help?

For the past few months my iPhone contacts and notes have been disappearing at random times. Sometimed they reappear, sometimes they dont. For awhile I was solving the problem by going into iCloud settings and toggling some features off and on. This no longer works. I get the feeling this is an iCloud issue as the "find My iPhone" feature is always off when I go back into settings, even when I have just switched it back on a day or so earlier.
I notice that whenever my contacts disappear the "Find iPhone" feature is also disabled. All of this started when I thought I lost my phone and put it into "lost" mode.
Any suggestions? I phone latest iOS on a Verizon 4S.

No dangers at all resetting the PRAM. I forgot to post instructions earlier so I'll post them below. It's possible resets may handle the issue or it's possible it's something mechanical too such as not enough RAM which is easy to upgrade or a failing HD. BTW how much RAM is installed and what size HD does the machine have and how much is availalble? But let's finish the basic resets (SMC, PRAM and Safe Mode restart) before we start looking at anything else.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

I want iPhone Contacts to override Address Book on Mac #2

I have updated my Address Book in my MacBook Pro and have synced it with my iPhone - so I'm finally good there.
However, I am trying to update my iMac and need to update the Address Book there. I don't want to sync it at this point - I want to wipe the iMac Address Book clean and start anew with the iPhone.
Any tips on how to do this?

Hi Im running on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 with the updated version of iTunes.
I just recently changed from using Outlook for Mac to using iCal and Mail. Outlook for mac was my main platform for contacts and calanders. When switching over, i managed to sort out my calanders into iCal, but my contacts do not seem to copy into my address book. All my updated contact are in my iPhone. iTunes still shows options to sync to groups i created in outlook even though i have totally deleted outlook.
I basically want to syc all my iPhone contact to my Address book and override the contacts I have in there already, and use address book as my contacts platform.
Help!
