HELP......  spreadsheet will not open in Numbers

I have used numbers for years and today when I try to open a spreadsheet that was created a couple of years ago, it will not open.  It just opened two days ago....  Does anyone know what is going on with Numbers?  I am operating maverick and my numbers version is 3.01.   Please help!

That's the usual cause. The document could have been corrupted by who-knows-what. Do you have a Time Machine backup? You might find a good copy of the document there, maybe with the last update missing.
Also, try Open With: Preview in Finder. If it opens in Preview you can see the contents and have some hope of recovery, even if only manually.

    @Nkcohen:
"Then move the old version into trash.  (The old version is still availabe under iWork 09."
Not while it's in the Trash, and definitely not after you've then emptied the Trash.
You can leave both versions in the Appications folder, and both versions' icons in the Dock. And you definitely should leave them until you have some experience with the new version and what it won't do that the '09 version will.

The app is crashing for some reason. Even though it is only flashing and will not open, it may still show up in the task bar. So try quitting Pages and then restart the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps.
Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

  • Downloaded office 365 and associated apps onto ipad mini.  How come some excel spreadsheets will not open?

Some excel spreadsheets attached to my emails will not open on ipad.  I have the excel app with 365 subscription.

Can you open them in the mail app itself? If you can't open them in the mail app, my assumption would be that they were not properly saved, named or they are just corrupt file. Files with the .xls or .xlsx extension that are properly formatted Excel files, should open in the mail app without the need for any other app. If you want to save and edit the files, then you need a compatible app in which to save them.

  • CS2 Photoshop 'Adobe Help Center ' will not open

    Hi,
I have been retouching ancient photos and need to use the help files.  I can successfully click on the help button and it will place a 'Adobe Help Center' button on my task bar, but it will not open.  I have used the help center before and had no problems with it.
    Thanks for any help.

Today I have tried to work through the instructions again for solving this problem.  I am working on the thought that something was corrupted.  These are the steps I took:
Deleted the Photoshop_9.0_en-us.zip file that was in Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Help Center/AdobeHelpData/Packages.
Downloaded the Photoshop help file "Photoshop_9.0_en-us.zip" and saved it directly to:  Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Help Center/AdobeHelpData/Packages.
    2. Delete the contents of the Cache folder (not the folder itself) in the following location:
    -- On Windows: Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Help Center/AdobeHelpData
    3. Delete the adobeassistance folder in the following location:
    -- On Windows: Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Help Center/AdobeHelpData/Database
    4. Manually launch the Adobe Help Center:
    -- On Windows: Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Help Center/ahc.exe
I could watch the program install the components into the various folders.
When I opened CS2 Photoshop and tried the help button, it again placed a button in the status line but would not open any files.
I did note that the ahc.exe and the ahcremind.exe files were both listed next an icon that had a large question mark - ? - on it.  Does that question mark mean the exe command is nonfunctional or that it is a file for questions?
If it means that the exe command is nonfunctional, how do I download a new exe file?  Do I have to delete the whole CS2 program and reinstall?
    Thanks for any answers.

All the other FCS apps work fine. i deleted preferences so i dont know what to do next. PLEASE HELP!

It's easier for me to just point you here:

  • Please help - Firefox will not open. library - applications - and no firefox is listed to get to my profile manager. . What's next?

firefox has been running slower. When this happens I'll reboot my computer and this speeds up firefox. When I restarted the computer firefox would not open. Just the spinning wheel with no access to the tools.
After I force quit - it says ignore or notify/report to apple. I tried sending a report, and it ques up the box with details, system config, etc... but when I click on send - it will not let me send one - I've never been unable to send a report before.
I uninstalled, then reinstalled. Upon opening I get the spinning wheel and nothing happens - I need to force quit. I see on this mozilla help site that I need to update my profile manager. I followed these instructions - Finding your profile without opening Firefox Open Finder and go to your home folder. Note: your home folder is usually the name of your Mac user account From your home folder open /Library/, then /Application Support/, then /Firefox/, then /Profiles/. Your profile folder is within this folder. but when I got to library - application support - there is no firefox listed.

You can do a disk check with the chkdsk.exe program.
If you run the chkdsk.exe program from a cmd.exe Command window then you can read the response from the chkdsk.exe program.
    Open a cmd.exe window:<br />
    Start &gt; Run: cmd.exe &lt;press Enter&gt;
    At the command prompt (>) type or Copy&Paste: chkdsk.exe /f /r &lt;press Enter&gt; (put a space before /f and /r)
If you get something like: Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? y/n then answer the question with "Y" and close all programs and reboot the computer.
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process.

  • XLS Files created by SSRS will not open in Numbers on the iPad

The company I work for creates business intelligence reports which are used in an education environment and are created daily and e-mailed out to staff.  These reports contain fairly simple tables with pupil data.
One customer uses iPads extensively to maximise the quick response to this (behaviour) data.  There is an issue which seems to be prevalent in newer versions of Numbers where these documents can not be opened.  I note a previous discussion on this matter where the only solution was to save the file in excel and then the sheets would open.  This is not really an option here.
I presume that there is some data missing in the header of the XLS file or something but if anyone has any information on this, especially if I can adapt the report in any way to include this data, please let me know if you have overcome a similar issue and how you went about it.
    Thanks,
    Pete H

Hi - thank you for your responses.  I don't have an iPad so testing is all being done on site.
The report is based on three tabs, each producing a basic table with data in.  I can create the reports in CSV and they work fine although the format is all wrong (no tabs etc etc) - but that would lead me to believe that it is nothing in the actual data which is causing the load error.  It also seems fairly intermittent, so I tested with a few different file sizes to make sure it wasn't this - and again nothing too conclusive there.
I presume quicklook is the built in function to view a file, I spotted this today but again it won't open in that or then again when asked to open in Numbers.
Hunting around this forum it seems there is some issue in general with opening some XLS files (especially ones created by SSRS) depending on iOS version, so that is the route I will be looking at tomorrow.  Putting these files through a save loop in excel isn't really an option, so I am going to test with a go between e-mail tomorrow which has in some cases seemed to do the trick - maybe appending something to the original file.  Some other posts have suggested that an XLSX file seems to work a lot better and that is supported in MS SQL 2012 which is on the way for our customers at some point.
    Definitely an awkward one!
    Thanks,
    Pete

Do you know the version of Excel and version of Number's installed? Also, please describe the method you are using for opening the document. I've had good luck by simply dragging the Excel file to the Numbers icon in the Dock.

When I tap or double-tap on a Numbers for iCloud spreadsheet in Windows 8.1 using Internet Explorer in Metro mode, nothing happens. Other buttons work. Long-pressing brings up the contextual menu, and the items in that menu work. I can even change the name of the spreadsheet, but I can't open the dang thing--any of them.
    What gives?

If in photoshop cs4 you go Help>About Plug-In and click on the words Camera Raw, what version does it say?
Check both the 32 and 64 bit versions of photoshop cs4.
I just tested a couple of canon T5I (700D) files from here and they open in photoshop cs4 with camera raw 5.7 after the dng conversion using the 8.6 dng converter.

  • Numbers 08 file will not open in Numbers 3.0

I updated my Numbers application so I could use the sister app wtih my iPad.
I try to open a couple of my 08 Numbers files and I get the following message:
"This spreadsheet can't be opened because it's too old.
To open it, save it with Numbers '09 first.
I can't believe that a newer version of Numbers can't open older versions.  This is going to be a serious problem as we have lots of 08 Numbers files.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.  I find it hard to believe that I have lost access to the files.  It is my understanding that there was an 09' and that Numbers 3 is 09 for the Maveric OS update (which I uploaded).
    Any advise?

The current version of Numbers is 3.0. The update is available for those using Number 2.3, iWork '09. Even if it were possible to update iWork '08 to the new versions, you would have many, many problems. The new versions cannot open any iWork '08 or earlier documents or templates. You will get an error saying to open the files in iWork '09 then open them in the new version. I suggest you buy the retail box of iWork '09 from a third party such as Amazon.com or eBay. Be sure to run Software Update after installing & before running any of the applications. You can also download the standalone updater from this page. You could then update to the new iWork apps in the Mac App Store. You might check this link for the iWork '09 trial. I have no idea if it is still available.

  • Spreadsheets will not open with update... or without...

I went to open a spreadsheet I made about two months ago, it said it needed to be opened with the newest version of Numbers. I came here, installed the latest version of Numbers, and it still has the same error message. What the frick? Why can’t it open older files, or newer files apparently…
There seems to be SERIOUS compatibility issues. I do not have Excel, so this is my only option. Apple, please fix this. I loved this program, but now its more of a hassle than anything.

These two screen shots were taken one after another (the error message first, then the screenshot from the app store).
I installed the update from the App store, I went to the launch pad, where after it was installed, it was all sparkly (like literally so I'm fairly certain that it was the right one.) I went to file > open > the spreadsheet that I wanted, and I got the same error message.
This was before my initial message, I apologize if the original post was not clear, I didn't know what tags I was clicking, to be honest, I posted orignally from my phone.
Oddly enough, I still get the error message, and if I turn off my computer and turn it on, then it still wants me to update the software. I've done the same thing, downloading and installing the update, clicking the NEW icon that is  in the apps folder, not on my dock, and I get the same loop. Immediately after that, if I go to the app store, it says that I have downloaded the most recent version, but if I restart my computer, it says I haven't. Again, this has happened three times.
I am aware that when I update, that the original doesn't go away. But it seems that the download doesn't work either. Perhaps this is an issue only with the app store?
