Help! - stuck in Windows partition!

I tried to install a Windows partition on a brand new iMac using Boot Camp and Windows 7.  Windows 7 installed OK, but the next step, namely the installation of Windows support software, including I assume Boot Camp itself, simply hasn't happened. I am now stuck in a small Windows partition of a 3TB hard disk with no apparent way out - I've already tried powering down and then up.
Suggestions?

The Windows support software should be downloaded before installing Windows, and it's installed after installing Windows.
To start up in OS X, hold the Option (Alt) key while your iMac is starting up until you see all bootable devices on the display. Select Macintosh HD, and if you want to start up always in OS X, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose Macintosh HD.
Open Boot Camp Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities), mark the box to download the Windows support software and follow the steps. When it has finished, restart, hold the Option (Alt) key while your iMac is starting, choose your Windows partition and install the Windows support software

  • Help Creating a Windows Partition

Hi I've got 2 hard drives. I want OS X Leopard on Bay 1 and Windows Vista on Bay 2. In Boot Camp Assistant which Bay do I select? Do I select "Create a second Partition for Windows" or "Erase disk and create a single partition for Windows"? any help is greatly appreciated

Your support person you spoke with wasn't thinking multi drive, only the single internal hard drive configuration.
Boot Camp Assistant will actually ONLY use the entire drive. So some people put a small OS X partition on it to force it in two.
I would play around, practice. But if you get familiar - can't hurt and always only helps - Disk Utility => Partition tab => Options.... (bottom of screen) and change it from default "GUID" to Windows Boot Record. Create MSDOS (FAT32).
Vista will install just fine, and gives you the option to format / delete and create - but if it is on its own drive it usually complains about "GPT" due to the presence of OS X drive. That is easier to do than describe / explain. There is an Apple and MS tech note though.
I like the OS to be on the outer tracks, higher performance. The idea of putting an OS on the 'backend' where I/O is the slowest is just.... sluggishly slow and I'd never want or put OS X there for regular use.
Also, once you have Vista, it is a lot easier to install a 2nd system, like "7" on another drive or partition; rather than boot and run from DVD, copy DVD easily to disk and it is lightning fast. Down the road.
You should be able to just boot from Vista even without doing anything, just remove OS X, treat it like a PC, and install. Works best if the drive is raw and was never formatted in OS X even.

  • HT204347 Find Serial number in Windows partition

At the moment my MacPro is locked down because of a P/word problem but i need my serial number for support help. My Windows partition on Bootcamp is working so can I get my serial number from this side?

The serial number should be printed underneath your computer on its chassis. Generally this is right between the hinges of the display, and should be accompanies by a bunch of regulations symbols and Apple's "Designed by Apple in California" text.

  • Critical Kernel error while on windows partition, now neither mac or windows will boot help ?

Hi I was on my windows side of my mac when i got the blue-screen-of-death with something saying Critical Kernel Error, weird noises from the speakers and the macbook pro did a hard shut off.
Since then I can no longer boot into the mac or windows side (both are stuck infinitely loading). I ran disk utility on the mac side and I have an "Invalid Node Structure." Which disk utility cannot repair. I do have DiskWarrior on another mac to try and rebuild the mac partition through a firewire connection - i think that is the correct course of action ?
But does this mean my windows partition is likely gone or any idea what went on ? As I am terribly confused that while on my windows side I had an error that messsed up both partitions.
Or what to check for so this hopefully doesnt happen again if it is a hardware problem? My drive smart status is listed as "OK" and I cant seem to run the Apple Hardware test as upon attempting to get into it the laptop just shuts off while loading it, although I read somewhere the Apple Hardware test is no longer preloaded on macbook pros.
The system in question is a 15" macbook pro bought around July 2011.
    Thank you,
    Wes

Alright I have both my mac side and windows side repaired and functioning fine. Should I still be concerned ? Linc I know you are saying this is a drive malfunction but is there a way I can be sure ? I still cannot run AHT (restart, hold down D), and my laptop shipped with Lion installed so I believe it should run. It just boots into the mac side when I hold D..

I believe that Lion and Mountian Lion use BootCamp 4.0 and earlier versions used 3.0. I don't use BootCamp but from reading The link below you need to get new drivers, burn a cd and install. Check out #20 on this page.

    Hi, Ralph,
The problem is that I did erase the partition, using disk utility, but I can't go back to my original disk size pre-partition, as disk utility won't let me do it and gives the message "Couldn’t modify partition map because file system verification failed." When I try to use Boot Camp Assistant it won't let me select the third option to remove windows.

TTBOMK the only way you can increase the Windows partition is to repartition the drive back to a single partition
    Then reinstall Mountain Lion
    Restore all data from backup
Create new larger partition with Boot Camp
    Install Windows
    Restore data from backup

  • Windows Partition Won't Mount in OS X

    Hi,
I just used Boot Camp to install Windows. I had Windows XP installed on my MacBook Pro awhile ago, but after I got it back from a hard drive repair I didn't put Windows back on. I recently downloaded the Windows 7 RC from Microsoft's site and used boot camp to install it. The install seemed to go fine, and I was in Windows setting up stuff for awhile. When I booted back into OS X, my Windows partition would not show up on the desktop, and would not appear in the Startup Disk preference. In Disk Utility, it shows up as grayed out with the generic name "disk0s3". When you try to mount it from there, it gives the error "The disk "disk0s3" could not be mounted. Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting." Since I formatted it as NTFS (no other choice for Windows 7), I can't do a verify or repair on the disk.
Going into Terminal and doing a "diskutil list", I see the 50 GB windows partition labeled as "Microsoft Basic Data." I've been looking around for a fix but can't find anything. Many people were complaining about this issue on these discussion boards back in 2007 but there was no real solution found.
While I can still boot into Windows by restarting and holding option, it's very frustrating to not see the disk in OS X. Does anyone have a permanent fix for this? I know it can't just be something with Windows 7 because people were having this issue years ago. Could really use some help with this. Although I don't really have anything installed beyond Safari, Firefox, iTunes etc it would just be a hassle to have to reinstall, and it may end up doing the same thing.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Adam

Alright, well I finally made progress! I had heard from other people who had this issue that installing NTFS-3G and MacFUSE didn't help, so I didn't bother before. However, I tried it just for the **** of it, and it definitely improved things. When I first restarted after installing both NTFS-3G and MacFUSE, I got a message saying that the Windows partition was unmounted "uncleanly" or something to that effect. I was given two options: to Ignore, or to Force the partition to mount. When I chose Force, it actually mounted successfully. The name on the partition was for some reason "Untitled", even though when I boot while holding option it shows the partition as "Windows". But it mounted fine, and I could write to it. I booted back into Windows, and found that under Windows the drive was also unnamed. So I named it Windows, went back into OS X and the name stuck.
The only remaining issue is that OS X still doesn't recognize it as a startup volume in the Startup Disk system preference. So in order to boot into Windows, I still need to restart with option held down; however, that's not a major issue. I was mainly concerned with being able to see files on the Windows 7 partition and transfer files from OS X to Windows and vice versa. So I'm basically happy, although I'd still be a bit happier if Startup Disk would see it as a bootable volume.
I'd still be interested to hear any other thoughts about this issue. It must be a known issue by now, since there was a very similar thread about this back in 2007, and still not fixed in Leopard seemingly. If anyone knows what may have caused this issue, or how one would have gone about fixing it without installing ntfs-3g/MacFUSE, I'd be interested. Still hoping the issue will be fixed under Snow Leopard.
