HELP!!! Suddenly unable to open .pdf in IE6 or IE7

Every .pdf I try to open, results in a new window with the deadly red X in the corner. I tried uninstalling Reader 8.1.1 but I get the message: "The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it." Since I'm the system administrator, access should not be the issue. Most times I can get around the problem by saving the file to my computer....but some forms won't allow that (like the ones at the Department of Revenue for WA state.
I really need to know how to fix this problem....it is costing me time every day....today I had to call the Dept of Revenue and have them fax me the form.......very time consuming.

PS Upgraded to IE7 hoping the problem would stop but it didn't....

You can try steps "To Set "Run as administrator" in Compatibilty Mode Properties" in following article to always run IE as admin:

But to figure out the root cause of the issue, I suggest we try Process monitor to capture the behavior when your open PDF in IE 11．

    Today I started having a problem opening PDF files in IE11.  I have Adobe Acrobat Standard version 9.5.5 (not reader).  I get the following error messages:
    It appears to be a security issue so on a whim, I browsed for iexplore.exe, right-clicked and selected "Run as administrator" and tried again and it worked as it should. 
    Where do I go from here?  I ran a repair install on Acrobat and it didn't help.  How do I run IE as admin all the time?  Do I even want to do that?  Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • Since last update, unable to open PDF files from either banking site. The other (IE) works fine but I hate IE. I deleted newer versions and went back to older releases. No help, same thing. Checked settings in options. That is ok. What's up?

    I think almost every dev is on arch-general, so that is the place to contact the group in general.  Specific points can probably be emailed to the dev involved, if one is identifiable and if the bug tracker is not a better place (bug reports to my email get ignored).
    I think the whole problem here is that there is really no dev in charge of that package.  So your emails were probably seen then skipped over by all devs thinking not my problem...  (I know that is true for me).   Then Andrea noticed an "orphan" package that needed updated and went ahead with it without connecting it to your previous emails, which is unfortunate.
    Now our maintainer backend is fixed, hopefully we can get all the orphan packages adopted out, or at least know if we need to bring on new people to maintain them.  That way, there should always be someone who information about specific packages should be sent to.

    To make sure that Adobe Reader is default,
    goto Edit->Preferences->Select default PDF Handler. Check the value in the dropdown list "Select Adobe product". If the first value which appears is 'Adobe ReaderX', then Reader X is the default PDF Handler.
    Also please let me know the OS you are using.
    Is the problem also faced in AOL webmail with any other Adobe Product(like Acrobat X, Reader 9 etc.) if you are using/used any of them?

    Do you see a message like this when you open one of your PDF documents?
    Your PDF document is a special type of form called a "dynamic XFA form".  The message is displayed when a dynamic content is not supported by a PDF viewer.
    As far as I know, no PDF viewers for iOS and Android mobile devices support dynamic XFA forms.  Here are the examples of the iOS apps that do not support dynamic XFA forms.
    Adobe Reader for iOS
    Mail
    Safari
    iBooks
    The PDF preview feature in Dropbox and other apps
    The message is trying to tell you to use the latest desktop version of Adobe Reader, not the mobile version of Adobe Reader.  I agree that the sentence, "You can upgrade to the latest version of Adobe Reader...", is somewhat misleading.  The message is baked into the dynamic XFA form that was authored by Adobe LiveCycle (desktop app) without regard for non-desktop apps (i.e. mobile apps).  Upgrading to the latest version of Adobe Reader for iOS would not help in this case.
    Currently, the only option to view and fill out dynamic XFA forms is to use the desktop version of Adobe Reader.

    Adobe for Palm is an ancient program that requires you to convert the raw PDF files on your desktop before you can sync them on a PalmOS device.  Are you using the converter program from Adobe?
    I gave up on this program a long time ago, and switched to the freeware "PalmPDF" available on freewarepalm.com.  You can put raw PDF's on an SD card and they can be read by the program with no conversion necessary!

    How about if you right click on the PDF and select Save Link As..., and then open it locally from within Reader? Does it work ok then?  That might be a workaround until the issue within the browser is resolved.

    Mozilla Firefox did not do their job, here. I am an editor and am constantly online. Now, I have to go to Safari to download PDFs. I reinstalled an earlier version of Firefox to get rid of the problem, but somehow Firefox has deactivated my PDF download feature. This is a total wreck and I am so angry I could spit. Stop launching new products until you have fully tested them. Customers are not your guinea pigs. Please fix this now- and fire a few idiots on the way- the ones who let this happen.

    In my LAN, on several PCs running with Windows 7 (32 and 64 bits), I observe two problems with "Acrobat Reader XI":
    - Delays / unable to open pdf files in the web browser (Internet Explorer).
    - Delays in printing: for example it takes over 8 minutes to print a pdf file: 400kB for two pages (on different printers / models).
    Here's the list of actions that I've allready tried to issue those problems:
    For the Web Browser problem :
    - Repair the "Acrobat Reader XI" installation.
    - Uninstalling and Installing Acrobat Reader.
    - In the web browser, disabling and activating the add-on (Adobe PDF Reader).
    - Uninstall "Acrobat Reader XI" and install "Acrobat Reader X"
    Temporary issue: downgrade to "Acrobat Reader 9", which solves the problem with the web browser.
    For the printing delay:
    - Repair the "Acrobat Reader XI" installation
    - Change the printers drivers (install Universal Drivers PCL)
    - Check the box: "Print As Image" before printing
    Any Idea ?

    You can get that error if there is still an old Adobe Reader plugin in the plugins folder in the Firefox program folder.
