Help: Suggestions for a New (AT&T) Phone

We want an upgrade phone (AT&T). We tried a Blackberry 8110 but had continuous syncing problems that neither Blackberry or PocketMac could figure out. Mostly with Mac Address Book. In the end, they suggested a surgical cleaning program that could only be done on a PC. That's when I gave up after 6+ hours on the phone with these folks.
We have been looking at the Samsung Propel A767 as a possibility. We have an iMac G5, using OS 10.4.11. I would like to be able to sync this through iSync if that's possible (we have Bluetooth); or if not, through a cable connection. My wife needs iCal and Mac Address Book to sync. I looked at Data Pilot but they do not show the ability to sync iCal, and that is very important to my wife. I was even considering investing in Leopard, which I see opens up a few more possibilities on supported phones.
Can anyone offer a suggestion? She was hoping for a keyboard that looks like a computer keyboard as our "senior" eyes are sometimes challenged during texting.
Thanks for any advice.

If you are already an at&t subscriber, the iPhone generally offers the best match to Mac OS X. Other options include using a Blackberry OS, Palm OS or Windows Mobile OS device AND the appropriate Missing Sync application from Mark/Space.
The RIM-sponsored and Information Appliance Associates-provided PocketMac option is, well, worth about what you paid for it, which is exactly nothing. Your experience would tend to bear this out, though others appear satisfied with their experiences.
Non-iPhone and non-smartphone options are likely limited to any Nokia and SONY-Ericsson models offered by at&t, as—unlike T-Mobile USA—at&t does not typically facilitate the use of any non-at&t provided unlocked GSM devices on its network. Technically feasible? Absolutely. But, as a matter of policy, they choose instead to 'lock in' subscribers and disallow devices they did not provide.

Finally, I have some time to spare for ArchWiki improvement.
I have modified my article on CMYK support in The GIMP as an example.
Please take a look at it here:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CMY … n_The_GIMP
The code to produce the box on the right is here:
    {{sn|'''Article summary:'''
This article will show how to enable rudimentary CMYK support in The GIMP using the Separate plug-in, and explain how to use color proof filter to soft-proof your images.
It will also cover more general topics on CMYK colors and DTP.

This is the best we can do with current ArchWiki setup. It would be even better if we could list categories in the box, as well as i18n links.

As you can see, it's a bit more typing than before, but it sure looks better. I might shorten the names for the templates. I wanted to make them memorable so they are a bit long.
As you can see, the problem of i18n links integration was fixed, so you can use existing i18n template and combine with the new "Article summary" set.
I will modify the article about writing summaries to include those templates and examples.
EDIT:   the i18n links in the article are just examples. Don't use them, since they lead to non-existing pages.
EDIT2: Okay, I've played around with the appearance of the summary box, but I'm at work now, so it's going nowhere. I'll play with it some more when I get home.

  • Need suggestions for a new printer with OS 10.9.5

I have a 2010 HP 6500 A Plus printer that has worked well with my iMac circa 2010. Printer is not feeding paper. It won't scan. Are there suggestions for a new compatible printer for OS 10.9.5.?

    Hey Debbisita,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like you are experiencing issues with your Printer and OS X. Before opting to purchase a new printer, you can try these troubleshooting steps to completely isolate the issue:
Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/ts3147
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Any suggestion for a new sound card?

    Hello!
My old PC has left me alone, and I'm going to build a new one from scratch this month. I'll be running Win7, I doubt I'll be going for Win8.
As for the sound card, I'd need some advice on what to buy: I have always had SoundBlaster cards and have loved them all, so I think I'll go for a new SoundBlaster (not even taking into account the built-in sound card on the motherboard...), but I can't discern which one would fit me best. I mostly use MIDI and soundfonts for recording study bases for my choir to rehearse and for composing orchestral music: I usually need complex MIDI files with many voices and instruments to perform well.
My old sound card was an Audigy with (just?) 48 MIDI channels (45 free + 3 drum channels), I'd like to have some recent card with good Win7 drivers, but still with many MIDI channels and soundfont support.
The one thing I'm sure I won't be changing at this moment is my 5.1 analogic speaker system, so I need a card with 5.1/7.1 analogic connectors.
Any advice (or wise info on what not to buy) will be much appreciated, thank you all!!!

Thank you for your advice. Have you tested any soundfont bank manager? Regarding this same soundcard, the Creative helpdesk told me it does not come in bundle... I was suggested to try with this one: http://ccfiles.creative.com/manualdn/Applications/AVP/11113/0xCA3D54C2/SFBM_PCAPP_LB_3_21_02.exe (Creative Soundfont Bank Manager 3.21.02), but they also told me (copied from their email)
This Creative SoundFont Bank Manager 3.21.02 is not bundled to the SoundBlaster Audigy Rx. You can try and test this but we do not officially claim that it will work.
Please note that the Creative SoundFont Bank Manager 3.21.02 is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit or 32-bit, Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit or 32-bit with Service Pack 1, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) 2005 or Windows XP MCE 2004.
For SoundBlaster Audigy Rx, it has synth a and synth b meaning 128/128 voices.
    No mention about Win8 compatibility...

  • Help / Suggestions for Adding a New Computer

My question is really more of an "organization / how should I do this" question.
I currently have a home desktop Mac and various other Apple related products (ipad, iPhone, daughter's Macbook etc.). The Mac is the main home computer and I use it to store all all of my home movies (organized in iMovie) and pictures (organized in iPhoto) as well as my music (iTunes). I back up through Time Machine to a USB hard drive connected to the Mac and I also have a 1TB NAS sitting in the basement which has the music duplicated and which I use for my Sonos.
Here is my question. I am considering getting a new laptop / Macbook and I am starting to get low on space on my desktop Mac. I like having all of my pictures / videos in one place, and I don't want to start adding pictures to my new Macbook  (which I don't have yet) and end up with pictures up to a certain point in time on my desktop, and then new pictures / videos on the Macbook.
I am looking for suggestions on how to deal with this. Is there a way of moving all the pictures and video library to the NAS, forcing iPhoto and iMovie on the desktop Mac to access the NAS for the library instead of its hard drive, and then doing the same thing on the new Macbook so that all of my photos and videos sit on the NAS, and both the desktop and the laptop access the NAS for the iMovie / iPhoto library? Any other suggestions to keeping it consolidated and organized?
    Thanx in advance

    Hi @draicous,
I understand the printer is already setup on the network, but the new computer isn't configuring the printer over the network. I can help you today.
I have provided a document for setting up the printer on the new computer over the network.

  • Suggestion for a new firmware (nokia 2630 phone)

    Hello,
I've bought nokia 2630, and revealed one weakness.
When i use "go to" menu or some other menus i can't use numbers to
move through menu (then i push "5" i go to point #5 and go in; in my old nokia 6021 this worked fine).
So such thing in 2630 works only in main menu, but not in "go to" or "functions" and some others menus.
I've interested in service center about new firmware, but they said that i have the latest version.
So i decided to post here to ask official developers to think about new firmware there this function will work properly.
    Thank you :-]

i didn't get any reaction from nokia support...

  • Looking for suggestions for a new display: What size, resolution and refresh is recommended?

I've been using my laptop display, 15.6" and its just too small. I figured I'd purchase a display to plug into the laptop. I'd like suggestion on specs. I figured a 20 to 23 inch would work ok but I've seen some folks with dual screens. Lastly, I have no understanding of resoution, refresh rates to look for or brands to either look at or stay away from.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks.

The good news is that you don't need to worry too much about the specs -- just about any monitor you purchase will be OK.  First choose a size that fits in you work area, then pick the monitor from that range of products that has the highest resolution and refresh rates -- the monitors will all have very similar specs.
    I've been using PCConnection
    http://www.pcconnection.com/
as my primary source for computer purchases for over 12 years and highly recommend it.  They have user's comments for most of their products, so you can get a feel for the satisfaction level of the products.
I've never understood the value of having dual monitors, unless one needs to have a couple of real-time monitoring apps open at the same time for instant feedback about the data....

  • Please help suggestions for solving built-only compiler error: 'The VI is not executable. The full development version of LabView is required tofix this error.'

We have develoepd a software tool and build it on regular basis. It currently runs error free when compiled in the editor, but when we built it and run the executable stand alone we get the error.
'The VI is not executable. The full development version of LabView is required tofix this error.' plus a broeken error.
This menas an compiler error that is not present in the editor but in the stand alone version. We tried to identify errors as suggested in several posts in this forum, but so far unsuccesfull.
As the editor and its compiler do not see the error  and are running fine and the stand alone version just syas 'find the error in the editor' in this case LabView is of no help.
Can anyone suggest a sensible or 'good practice ' way of searching for the source of this error?
Our project  comprises hundreds of Vis over several libraries.
    Thanks,
    Chris

Thanks Craig for all your suggestions.
We seem to have located the problem in a new vi just added to the package causing conflicts by using the same vi names as other vis already present in the package. Excluding this vi removed the error.
It seems related to a conflict by having two vis with the same name, which was mentioned by LabView and interactively resolved when running the main vi from the editor. When successfully building the main vi the builder did not mention this conflict and reported a successful build, but when trying to run the executable it gave the cryptic error. The error caused us problems because there was no hint for the cause, just the suggestion to solve this in the editor, while at the same time in the editor the VI was running fine.
We will post about this in detail after we have positively proven that this actually was the case.
The .net version issue was already checked.
Performance was the same on all machines we tested on including the dev machine.
Debugging was tried nut did not help as the vi could not run (broken arrow). We assumed that debugging only helps in running faulty functioning vi''s. We did not check for broken arrows in sub-vis (after connecting), that could have helped, although our application has hundreds of our own vis.
    In relation to your remark:
'Are you using many classes? Have you verified that the proper access scopes are set for functions calling those vis?'
Could you elaborate on setting access scopes. We were not aware of this option in LabView, although we realize this is a basic element of the underlying c code.
    Ragrds,
    Chris

  • Suggestion for a new name for this place

Using the term "Support" in Apple Support Communities makes people think they have Apple's ear here.
("This is the support website, right? My Mac Plus crashed after I installed all of Unsanity's Haxies. C'mon Apple!")
And lots of people aren't providing support or receiving support, anyway (e.g., this post). In fact lots of people are just blowing off steam or ranting and raving in some form or another.
Why not just call this joint: "Apple Communities"?
Yes, I embrace the irony in making this suggestion to the non-Apple audience.  But feel free to trash me anyway.
    charlie

Thanks for the Don Martin props. Glad to see someone recognized it. One of these days I'll get around to giving myself a present of the two volume "Completely Mad Don Martin." Too bad, I completely missed Captain Klutz. I don't think I was aware of Mad or Don Martin very much after the early '60's. I had all the fifties Mads, which my mother, in a fit of cleanliness, threw out when I went away to college. If I had them now, I could afford to buy that two volume set in a beat.
His characters are absolutely wonderful. I think the ony one who comes anywhere now to expressing that complete sense of lostness, derangement (the body gone totally awry) and befuddlement is Roz Chast in the New Yorker. (See the Ungooglable Man, below.) But Don Martin is still the gold standard in that department.
(I like your suggestons for names. Maybe we can use them all.)

  • Suggestion for a new OCA / OCE exam

I have noticed that there are a lot of candidates who learn for an exam. There seems to be a lot of incentive to studying for the exam and "learning" the material.
However, there are also a lot of candidates who do not understand the 'certification', 'learning', 'followup' processes. It also seems that if there is no reward, such as a certificate, skills and processes are overlooked or misunderstood.
I suggest an OCA (or perhaps an OCE) level exam that tests the candidate for "How to find information on Education.oracle.com, Certification.oracle.com, Certview.oracle.com, Tahiti.oracle.com, OTN.oracle.com"; "What happens after you write the exam and how long do I have to wait"; "Why I should have only one testing ID"; "What is a FAQ"; "Ability to use internet search engines and how to formulate questions"; "Why do forum administrators bother with Forum Stickies", and the like.
While somewhat tongue-in-cheek (or at least cheeky), I encourage thinking about this. We are churning out people who supposedly are professionals, and yet some have no idea what that 'professional' icon means or where to find out more information about it.

Well not an OCA or an OCE certificate but perhaps an OCS, and that could be useful for partners as well. The problem is if offered online it would be abused.
I get concerned when a candidate newly registered for OTN has just passed the high stakes exam for an OCA wonders where their certificate is. It is a concern they don't seem to have researched the certification process much. The lack of familiarity with the certification process seems slightly concerning ... and there is probably a lack of familiarity with the Oracle websites as well, which is not what one would expect from a certified person.
The new OTN registration isn't a definite indicator of a problem here, but it is a strong indicator there may be something unsatisfactory.
Indeed the absolute worse case is an SQL exam online by proxy taker followed by braindump use or a proxy take of the high stakes exams.
In practice I would suspect that an unbalanced delivery of the WDP training or third party training or university training may be a culprit. (and I may be wrong here). (Note there seems to be an increasing tendency for some universities to focus on education by certification study ... ).
I really think it would be useful if a candidate was required to register with Oracle (by means of an SSO/OTN account) before being able to book a certification examination rather than being simply able to goto Pearson VUE/Prometric (This is the case with a lot of other Testing programmes, and was the case with Sun until recently). IMHO This would encourage a good 'first contact' with Oracle and would encourage the following benefits:
    - A relationship with Oracle would be established sooner during the exam preparation process.
    - There would be an opportunity to point the candidate at useful processes, authorized learning methods and resources via email.
    - An earlier point in the learning process to discourage bad learning technique
    - The sales people would love the opportunity to sell oracle training.
I think there is an argument for requiring OTN registration at least a month before a certification exam can be booked ... exceptions being if an Oracle University Course has been attended. However the logistics would probably fail on this and it could hurt people who have just left an employment.
Edited by: bigdelboy on 07-Apr-2010 00:57 PS: - Hans - You also didnt great job with one of the sticky announcements. I really think however now that Prometric / Pearson Transition has happened and merge with Sun is stable all the sticky posts should be reviewed and rolled into one entitled something eyecatching like only silly people should not read this FAQ first

  • Suggestion for a new Hard Drive?

I'm thinking about replacing the 250GB hard drive that came with my G5 with a larger one. I'll relegate the old one to backup duties and the new one will end up being my new media drive. (Currently, I'm running my OS off a 150GB Raptor via a SATA card.)
I'd like to know what you'd suggest as a good 500MB-750MB drive to replace the existing one? I'm plan on using as a media / backup drive (for when the new OS comes out). I'd like one that's not too noisy, however. At one point I got a 320MB Western Digital that I ended up relegating to offline backup due to the whining noise it made when operating. It was noisy enough I could easily hear it above my computer's fans. I'd like something that isn't particularly noisy since it will be operating at all times.

WD would be my choice. Either 500GB or 750GB. And by the looks of it, the 750 is an excellent drive for replacing the (loud) 10K Raptor. I've noticed that Raptor bought couple months ago is much quieter than one from a year ago.
I have 3 x Caviar SE16 500GB, 2 x 320GB RE series, and 2 x 160GB RE as well. Along with a couple 10K Raptors and 3 x MaxLine Pro. The ML Pro run warm-ish and make more noise than Caviar.
Samsung 500GB would be quiet too.
