Help! Superdrive ejects everything!

Hi
Every time I put a cd or dvd into my superdrive it clicks and whirrs for a moment then ejects it again.
Is this anything I'm likely to be able to mend /diagnose myself, or am I off for a replacement drive?
Thanks,
Jestyn

If you read the other threads about this "SuperDrive" you will see there are some things you can do before you call the drive dead. BTW - your symptoms are not like the rest of ours - so keep your fingers crossed.
You could
1) zap the perimeters

2) Rewrite the Permissions through Disk Utility

May I suggest that you use Verbatim DVD-R at 4x or slower to burn.

5) My personal favorite - (also courtesy of Sherry Johnson) remove all electrical everything from the computer and open it up. Remove fan and see little silver square (on the bottom of the motherboard) it has a little white circle button - press and hold for a full second - it's called resetting the motherboard.

Tell them about it here:

7) and after you've tried all these "helpful" hints - Buy a new one.

  • Superdrive ejects on boot after installing 10.6.3 on MacBook

I upgraded from 10.6.2 to 10.6.3 yesterday, and after this upgrade my superdrive ejects at startup, I have got C&C3 disc in there because I play it regularly and leave it in while it's turned off. I did not have this problem before and I hope I did not break my machine now.
Also, is the superdrive supposed to be making all the noise when putting in and ejecting a disc? It has done this ever since I bought it....
Can someone help me out on this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tom

What kind of noise is it? There should be a sort of machine-like chirping sound when the disc is drawn in & then a soft whirring sound as the drive spins up the disc. After that the only additional sounds should be quiet clicks as the head assembly moves from point to point over the disc to read it.

  • How far should SuperDrive eject discs?

How far does your SuperDrive eject discs?
The one on my MBP Core 2 Duo 17" 2.33 GHz ejects recordable discs only about 1-3/8 in, which makes it impossible to remove them without touching the top or bottom surface. My newer MBP Core 2 Duo 17" 3.06 GHz ejects them much farther (about halfway), so they can be handled by the edges instead.
The problem doesn't occur with commercially pressed installation discs, only with discs I use to record on (Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R, Verbatim 8X DVD-R and Taiyo-Yuden 8X CD-R).
This is the second replacement of the drive from AppleCare with the same problem. (At least I think they replaced it a second time. The service record said, "Doesn't eject media" instead of "Doesn't fully eject media," so maybe they tested it and thought it was fine.)
Is this normal behavior? Anyone else seeing this?
    Thank you,
    David

Do you notice any difference between commercially recorded discs and recordable ones?

  • IMAC SUPERDRIVE EJECTS Blank DVDs

My Imac Superdrive ejects all blank dvd but can read all movie dvd. Is there anyway to fix it ?

Hi i have the iMac mid 2007, and my superdrive have always been noicy. So i bought an external DVD bruner (samsung) works great, so the interna would not break down. Despite my prudence my internal superdrive are broken now. kjhfhf
    Can´t read, can´t write, can´t do nothing.
Several users has hade problems with these drivers, maybe Apple would extend warrent on thise lousy gizmo´s.
Or make the superdrive like a cassette, so just a push on the side of the iMac makes the superdrive "pop out". So you dont have to demolishe the whole computer just to replace it.

  • Why my menu bar shows Superdrive eject button?

For some reason iMac shows Superdrive eject button on menu bar and when I click on it then Superdrive isn't active. I have no CDs/DVDs in the computer.
Tried on Disk Utility, clicked on SuperDrive but eject button wasn' t active.
Why is it there and what does it do there?

If the machine detects that it does not have an apple keyboard (and not the magic key to the right of the f12 that isn't f13, and for users who didn't know that f12 can act as a keyboard eject in the absence of magic f12.5) it will launch that menu item. Once its launched, you have to remove it as described by others here. It will also show up if you have TWO optical drives attached, so you can control which one to eject.

  • Need help forcibly ejecting a CD.  I've tried *everything*

    Hello all,
I attempted to burn an ISO to a brand new CD-RW disc on an Intel 1.86Ghz Mac running OS X 10.4.6. Unfortunately, after preparing the file to be written, OS X produced an error dialogue about the CD being unable to be written to (it had done this immediately before with a new CD).
After ejecting the disc and sticking it back in again, the CD will now no longer eject.
Pressing eject on the keyboard doesn't work (even when logged out or after restarting).
Dragging the CD to trash doesn't work.
Attempting to eject in Finder doesn't work, similarly dragging the CD on the desktop to the trash.
Holding down the left mouse button whilst restarting only results in the restart hanging, and having to manually power-off via holding down the power-button.
Disk utility hangs when attempting to load.
This leaves manual eject with a paper-clip, ONLY THERE IS NO HOLE ON THE SIDE OF AN INTEL iMAC!
Please help. I really do not want to have to send the machine back to Apple, or one of their repairers. I'm absolutely stuck.
And since I've restarted several times, I really doubt there is a process trying to use the CD.
    Please, please help.

  • Superdrive ejection recognition problems

I have brand new MacBook pro Retina running OS X 10.8.2.  It doesn't have a CD rom drive, so I got the superdrive to go with it.  It is extreemly awkward to use.  If I install a disk, or copy something from a disk, and then hit the eject on Finder, most of the time it just makes drive disappear.  If I pull out the USB plug and reinsert, the drive reappears, and then ... if I hit Eject again ... it ejects disk.  Makes it awfully awkward to copy/install multiple disks.  I have a USB CD/DVD drive that I got for my PC.  If I plug that into Mac it seems to work fine: ejects when it should, appears in list when I insert disk.  At moment, if I have multiple disks to rip, I'll use the old ugly drive.  ... but I'd really like the pretty one to work.
Anybody else have this problem or is it just bad karma?

    Hello Again,
I've talked with another Level 4 person to get some additional ideas. Here are some of the ideas that were suggested:
    1) If it works in a new user account, but not in your primary account, then there is a file that you can delete and see if that restores full operation. Rather than deleting it, I would propose moving it so that you can put it back if needed.
    Go to:
Hard Drive --> Users --> User Name --> Library --> Preferences
    Locate the file:
    com.apple.digihub.plist
Drag that file to your desktop, and then reboot.
Now, see what happens. If it works, great. If not, then we'll need to keep looking.
If moving the file creates a new problem, then you can move it back to it's original location. That's the reason we didn't delete it. If you want, you can delete the file once everything is back to normal operation.
    2) Their experience had shown that unplugging everything from the computer (all cables - including power) and leaving it disconnected for about 25 minutes had fixed similar problems. In this case, leave it off and fully disconnected from everything for about 25-minutes and then at the end of the time, plug in just the power, keyboard, and mouse (nothing else yet). Now, turn on the computer and see if it works properly.
Hopefully those ideas or the ones provided previously will help. Let us know what you find and we'll go from there.
    I hope this helps.
Let us know if you have other questions.
P.S., if you'd like, go ahead and click the "Helpful" or "Solved" buttons on any of the posts / replies above if you feel they were helpful or adequately answered your question.

  • Keyboard Superdrive Eject No Longer Works...

After installation of 10.4.9 update, my superdrive will not operate via the keyboard.
I am able to load the eject button to the menu bar though.
Any help getting this function to work again would be greatly appreciated.

  • Mac SuperDrive Ejects Disk Before Importing The Full CD

Hey, I recently got a USB SuperDrive for my MacBook Pro, and while I was importing the final song in an album, it ejects it, cutting the song off midway. It also shows the import screen without any changes, if you could help as to how I can fix this, it'll be a great help, thanks

    No error messages at all.
There are 10 chapters, none with special characters. I should add that I burned a copy last week without any problems at all... since then, the only thing I did to the project was split up a chapter (it was too long for my liking), and added closing credits. I then added a slideshow to the project because there was lots of room left on the DVD (from the first burn). I still won't fill the DVD so size (movie length) is not an issue.
I found a similar thread (ok, identical problem as me) read through all four pages and am troubleshooting from suggestions on that thread... (currently, am creating a disk image of the project.... should be done in 1 hr, 27 minutes). I'll check that with the Apple DVD player and then try to burn the image with disk utility.
Thanks for the response... still looking for an answer though.

  • Seems to synchronize, but after ejecting, everything is gone

Hi! I am not sure if this is an iPod, an iTunes or a MacBook problem. I've had my Nano since last October and haven't had any problems up till now. A day or two ago I took some podcasts off and loaded some new ones on, all manually. When I disconnected and wanted to listen to them, they were gone! Other things were still there, music and audiobooks, for example. I reconnected it to the MacBook and got the following message: "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "........" Go to the summary tab in iPod preferences and click Restore to restore this iPod to factory settings."
I did that, synchronized some things and everything seemed fine until after the disconnect. They were gone again. When I tried synchronizing several podcasts and audiobooks on my husband's iMac, everything was fine. I tried it again from the iBook and got the same message.
This time after the Restore and synch everything was gone and when I connected it to iTunes again, I didn't get the message, but in the capacity bar in the summary section all the space that had been filled with blue-audio was now orange-other. There is only orange. I've repeated the Restore process a couple of times, put some audio on the iPod and ejected. Same results: nothing on the iPod and everything showing orange-other in the capacity bar.
If I remember correctly, there was a recent iTunes update and this is probably the first time I synched since then.
I would welcome any advice. It would be really inconvenient to only be able to sync things from my husband's computer.
    Thanks! Kätchen

I have the same problem, just happened about 2 hours ago, and kind find anything to help. I have a 16GB 4th gen nano and a macbook pro. the only thing different is that in addition to the symptoms you have listed I get the "ipod cannot be restored (or ejected) because files are in use by another application".

  • Help with Ejecting disk after bad update

My MBP froze during an update and it won't start up.
All I have is a friends install disk with me and that will get me to Terminal.
I can't get the disk to eject since it is the startup disk.
    PLease help!!

Do an Archive and Install on your internal hard drive so that you can boot to your internal drive (what is the purpose of getting the disk out if you can't boot!). After you install Leopard (remember to check preserve user settings!), you can eject the startup disk. Archive and Install only changes the system folder, so your applications, documents, music, movies, settings, desktop background, etc. will not change. Remember to run Software Update and install all of the updates. My advice is to not have any other applications open. Hopefully, everything installs correctly and your problem is gone.
