Help...switched to an iMac

I recently purchased photoshop elements 12 download from amazon, I just switched from a PC to an iMac. Do I need to repurchase this? I really hope not...can you please help??
Thank you,
Stacy Pearson

Hi Stacy
Unfortunately the Amazon downloads are single platform only. The products shipped in a box are multi-platform and come with DVD disks for both PC and Mac.
However since you have the current version PSE12, you could request a platform swap. See the link below for further information.

  • Hi! I'm a Windows XP convert... switched to an imac about 4 months ago and am LOVIN' it  As a graphics designer I did use a feature on my Windows machine which I really miss on my mac... beaing able to see a preview of one of the images in a folder on top

Hi! I'm a Windows XP convert... switched to an imac about 4 months ago and am LOVIN' it As a graphics designer I did use a feature on my Windows machine which I really miss on my mac... beaing able to see a preview of one of the images in a folder on top of the folder icon. In other words, in Windows, you can see the first image that is inside the folder as an icon on the folder itself. Is there a way to do this on the mac? Maybe some software program that will do it? Thanks for you help!

It would be brilliant if Apple could make picture folders behave like events in iPhoto. You could see a photo on the folder, and also mouse over it to change pictures.
But no, there's not an application I'm aware of that does this. You can manually make a picture the folder icon, but it's a tedious process.
Unfortunately this is another example of how dated and worn out the Mac's interface is. The concept of using a file folder as the icon for a directory of images is so 80's. You could use coverflow, but that only helps once you're in the directory itself. Or use iPhoto or Aperture, although they just do photos. Or try Lyn as an alternative: it has a sort of iTunes-like interface, and makes it easy to organize photos without having to put them in iPhoto. And it can display photos that are already in Libraries.
But you'd probably need a Finder alternative. I use Leap, which displays any type of document. It also does tagging, which is another huge omission in the Finder. More like Windows Explorer (although still no photo on folder icons).
Another very stylish Finder alternative, especially useful for pictures, is FileBrowse. I don't know why it hasn't gotten more attention. It DOES put photo previews on the folders it shows. And allows one-click expansion to show the photo enlarged. It's super fast, and even allow you to group/sort by camera or flash! It really has to be seen to be appreciated. It works in Lion, although it doesn't seem to be have been updated lately. http://www.filebrowse.com/index.html

  • Can anyone help me get my iMac to reboot?  I get a gray "curtain" over the start up screen saying I need to restart my computer but it won't restart.  I just keep getting the same message every time.

Can anyone help me get my iMac to reboot?  I get a gray "curtain" over the light gray start up screen with a message that I need to restart my computer and to hold the power button until it powers off and then press the power button again to restart.  It just does this over and over again and won't restart.

Yeah, as necronym stated, it is a hardware issue and more than likely a RAM problem. Disconnect everything from the computer except keyboard and mouse and try again. If it still happens try removing one and/or swapping your RAM sticks over. Keep trying until you have eliminated all possible combinations. Just put a mark on one RAM stick so you know what have tried. If it still fails to boot properly you should probably replace your RAM, but that is no guarantee of success. Have a look at this link for more info on a Kernel Panic.

  • ITunes on Windows gone due to crash. Switched to an iMac. Now what?

Brother-in-law lost his iTunes library due to Windoze machine dying. He switched to an iMac. Still has his iPods but no associated iTunes library with it now due to the crash (and no backup).
What can he do in this situation to get his library back and working on his iMac?

1). Connect the iPod to the computer. If it is set to sync automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all the songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from the iPod.
2). When when the iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use the iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and the iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore an iTunes library from the iPod. iTunes itself will only give you the option to copy iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from an iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here (you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well):

    Floola Mac & Windows

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Keep the iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that your brother-in-law gets himself an external hard drive and backs up his stuff up, relying on an iPod as a sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Help connecting device to imac

    hey guys,
need to know if/how i can connect a device to the imac.
its a programming device with a VGA outlet. it can be connected to screens and projectors with ease just as you would with a pc.
but for work purposes it has to be connected to an imac.
my cilent would also like the ability to easily switch between the imac and this programming device.
i have read online that youill need the thunderbolt to VGA adaptor.
but have not seen any replies saying that it has worked ?
    Thanks
    Anthony

What do the manufacturer of the device recommend?

So just to be clear on a few things:
Should partitioning the hard drive not work is it undoable?
Will this have any impact on doing a complete erase and reinstall and will that restore it back from the process?
Is there a limited amount of space that makes this process ineffective?

  • HT201250 I am very frustrated. New to iMac products. Just bought a 27" iMac two days ago. Received no manual, no booklet with ID registration number, etc. Need help migrating PC to iMac. How do I get in touch?

Need help migrating pc to imac. Do not have manual. Trying to get infornation online, but, cannot get an answer.
I have downloaded pc migration assistant to pc windows 8 pro. Was able to get imac to finally give me "the number"
Did the same with pc received number once, not same as imac. Pop up window with info dissappers and cannot recover
What am I doing wrong? Paid extra for extended support package and it took hours to finally get it registered and approved.
However, no help. Yikes, I feel like a make another great mistake!

First: If you purchased AppleCare you should call back at 1-800-APL-CARE and ask for further assistance.  You'll want to learn how to retrieve your operating system version and your IMac's serial number as you'll need these for when you call AppleCare:
Click on the Black Apple in the top left hand corner of your Imac's physical monitor
Click on About this Mac from the drop down menu
Below the silver Apple and "OS X" it will say "Version 10.x.x"  (If this number is not 10.8.4, run Software Update by hitting the button marked "Software Update")
Click on this number twice in a row.  This is your machine's serial number.  (zeros can be used; the letter "O" is never used).
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1349 for details how to find serial numbers on Apple products
If you have an Apple ID (you can create one at appleid.apple.com), you can login to supportprofile.apple.com, register an Apple product, and sign up for VoicePass, which, if you give your product a name e.g. Maria's Imac, you can speak that over the phone and skip having to give the serial number when you call.
If you have an Apple ID, you can also call AppleCare and ask them to activate VoicePass.
This is the link for your tech specs: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP667
This is the link for your quick start guide: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imac_late2012_quickstart.pdf
This is the link for important product information: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imac_late2012_quickstart.pdf
Second: this is an educated guess: Your new Imac and your PC need to be either on the same wifi network or you need to connect them physically with an Ethernet cable (available at Radio Shack, Wal Mart, etc).  My guess is that they are not, and so your IMac and PC are not talking to each other.  That might be why you are seeing a different code on the PC.
Time Machine would not be relevant to your issue.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796 is the link to relevant instructions, however it left out some housekeeping you should do on your Imac before you begin a migration
Run Software Update on the IMac to confirm that the latest updates are installed.
On the IMac, make sure that you have the latest versions of any third-party software.
On the source Mac, open System Preferences, click Sharing, and make sure there is a name in the Computer Name field.
Do not let either computer go to sleep while you are attempting to migrate. To disable sleep on the IMac
Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu.
Choose Energy Saver from the View menu.
Adjust the "Computer sleep:" slider to Never. (Change this back after the migration is done).
You can adjust "Display Sleep" to a few minutes - this won't affect the migration
Uncheck the box if checked next to "Put Hard Disks to sleep when possible"
I don't know Windows 8 but this link looks promising as to how to disable sleep: http://techmell.net/how-to/disable-enable-sleep-mode-hibernate-windows-8/
Once you've done this, either connect both Mac and PC to the same wifi network and surf the web with each to confirm that connection is working - or connect them to each other with an Ethernet cable.
Then relaunch Migration Assistant on your Imac and your PC, and follow the instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796 starting with your IMac, or call AppleCare back.
Understand that if you have further issues, you'll need to help AppleCare help you by:
walking them through the steps you've taken in Migration Assistant
letting them guide you as they isolate the issue to either:
    The Imac's software
    The IMac's hardware
    The PC's software
    The PC's hardware
Firewall settings (maybe - especially if 3rd party firewalls are installed)
    The wifi connection, if used
    The ethernet connection, if used
I think the issue is likely what I guessed, or it's a software issue.
To learn more about your new Mac, I recommend this link: http://www.apple.com/support/imac/intel/
    And this book: http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/0789749890
I am a technical support professional who troubleshoots Macs all day long.  I do this for a living.  The book above is the most accurate, and easy to understand book I've seen with respect to using Mountain Lion and its various applications.  It's for a MacBook but the focus is on the software which is why I recommend it.
Don't feel like you have to rush to upgrade to OS X Mavericks.  In fact, you should always confirm both all the hardware and software you use is compatible with any new operating system before you upgrade.  And ask yourself: "why do I need it now?"  Because it's new is not a good answer.
In the future, specifying any troubleshooting others have done will help those on these boards help you.  Also, don't let a specific issue lead you to assume you've made an all-encompassing mistake.  It's just one issue, and it's resolvable.
And everyone else: giving a dozen recommendations for reading will only leave the petitioner bewildered.  Start with three.  And try responding with a hypothesis as to what's causing the primary problem!

    Hi to all,

Oh my Gawd, you will LOVE the Intel iMac but go for the 20" and get the additional 256 video ram. Well worth it and you get an amazing display/picture.

Noise? There is no noise. None. Nada. Zilch and I run my iMac 24/7. It is just on all the time, downloading files or making movies. This is my first iMac and I am so happy to have it. A most excellent machine!
I mostly do intesinve vork on Photoshop CS so

You'll have to opt for Photoshop CS for OSX and again, there is no fan noise. The 20" Intel iMac is very quiet. Promise.

  • Need help switching from cable modem to DSL

Howdy all. I've had an iMac for a few months now and I'm still clueless. LOL (PC user for years). Please list all the steps I need to do to switch from dial up to DSL. All help is appreciated and needed.
    Thanks.
    craftology.

As you dont say where in the world you are it is impossible to give specific information. However this is how it works in the UK. ISP's dont install anything for you. You sign up with the ISP, you purchase a package, this varies from the speed i.e 2mb, 8mb 16mb 20mb per sec.
You then have options such as unlimited downloads, or a monthly data cap. Then you pay for your first month usually with a debit/credit card and setup a direct debit from your bank account there after. Some contracts are for 12 months others are 3 months and some are 1 month at a time.
But the thing you need to be aware of in the UK if you already have cable then this usually means you have cable TV and a cable provided phone line. In the UK you cannot get DSL on a cable phone line you have to get a British Telecom line.
You then provide your BT phone number to the ISP. Then after they process your payment they inform you as to when your line will be activated and then they send you a preconfigured ADSL router. You just then follow the instruction plug it in and it works. Most boxes have WPA setup already and have the password printed on the bottom of the router. An engineer does not come to your house unless the is a problem and they detected a line fault that requires and engineer visit.
Of course if you are a business you can pay for a engineer visit to setup the network as well but this costs money.
edit just saw that your location in your profile is listed as 'Mo' where is 'Mo

  • I need help switching back to iPhoto

In February of this year I switched from iPhoto to Aperture for very specific reasons. My laptop's hard drive was running out of space, as it was housing my photo library that was quickly approaching 25,000 photos and pushing about 30 Gigabytes, and I wanted to take advantage of Aperture's ability to store photo masters on an external drive.
So why switch back? When I described why I had switched and my experiences doing so back in February I had said that I ran into many problems all of which I was able to solve save two:
"The two things I have yet to solve, which are rather large things: 1) Spotlight can no longer find my photos since switching to [edit: from] iPhoto. I am really not sure where to start with fixing this so I think I’m just going to have to ask someone. 2) Reorganizing my keywords in Aperture (since I had them set up in iPhoto) is impossible. When I bring up the Keywords HUD, I’m greeted with all of my keywords residing subordinately to a master keyword of 'iPhoto'. When I try to access the keywords that are “below” iPhoto Aperture freezes. Perhaps I have too many keywords (I do have an awful lot). I’m not sure how to solve this one yet either. Maybe there is a raw .plist file that I can manually edit (and I am willing to do so)." -- Me.
After using Aperture for the past 3+ months I've yet to resolve either of these issues. Recently there was an update to Aperture from Apple that, according to the documentation for the update, was supposed to help resolve my second issue with having too many keywords for Aperture to handle - but it hasn't helped much. So since switching to Aperture I've not tagged more than maybe fifty photos, which is discouraging because I know that once I switch back to iPhoto I'm going to be busy tagging photos again.
So I suppose you could say I'm switching back for two main reasons. First, I want it to be much easier to tag my photos since that is probably the single most important thing to me and the experience with iPhoto and Keyword Manager ( http://www.bullstorm.se/KeywordManager.php ) is far superior to that of using keywords in Aperture. Second, I want my photos to start showing up in Spotlight searches again. I'm more than willing to deal with the caveat, albeit a rather large one, that I won't have my photos with me wherever I go anywhere but that they'll forever reside on my firewire drive.
    What I need help with...
When I open iPhoto I see all of the previews for the photos that I had the day I switched to Aperture. However, the originals have been moved by Aperture onto my firewire drive - so when I click on each photo all I get is a ( ! ) symbol. The previews still reference a file that does not exist yet the iPhoto database still retains all of the relevant metadata (date/time, keywords, comments, etc) that I had worked so hard to put into iPhoto. I need to retain this information and somehow get the originals back into place so that iPhoto sees them again.
What I thought about doing was this: 1) Somehow restore the originals for the almost 25,000 photos into the place where iPhoto thinks they should be. 2) Move the entire library to my external firewire drive. 3) Import the remaining images that I've taken since switching to Aperture into iPhoto.
Since I have Aperture store my photos by date - importing only the images that I've imported into Aperture should be a piece of cake. I do not need to retain any metadata from Aperture since I've only tagged a few photos in Aperture and all of the other information I may need should be on the original file (like date taken, etc.). I know I'm going to lose a lot of edits that I've done like cropping, rotating, color balancing, red-eye reduction, etc. but I'm more than willing to lose all of that if it means that I can pick up where I left off and get back into the swing of things in iPhoto.
I've Googled like crazy and haven't found someone doing exactly what I'm trying to accomplish so any help with my current situation is greatly appreciated. I've also posted this on my blog http://cdevroe.com/notes/back-to-iphoto/

    cvdevroe
    2) Reorganizing my keywords in Aperture (since I had them set up in iPhoto) is impossible. When I bring up the Keywords HUD, I’m greeted with all of my keywords residing subordinately to a master keyword of 'iPhoto'.
Bear with me, my terminology may not be right. I'm heading in the opposite direction, and one of the advantages i see to Aperture is that I've got the same advantages in Keyword management as I have with KM in iPhoto.
Have you tried re-organising them using the control bar: Below the thumbs there's a drop down menu, by default it shows Photo Descriptors. Click on it and Select 'Edit Buttons'. You can merrily re-organise your Keywords in this window, and even have your changes reflected in live in the HUD.
As to the Spotlight searching, I'm afraid someone else will need to help on that one. Personally - and it's a regular on the iPhoto forums - I've never had much luck getting Spotlight to search within iPhoto for keywords, apart, of course, from using the search window in the iPhoto Window. I suspect a system-based search of iPhoto keywords is simply not possible.
What I thought about doing was this: 1) Somehow restore the originals for the almost 25,000 photos into the place where iPhoto thinks they should be.
That will work, but they'll need to be exactly as they were.
    2) Move the entire library to my external firewire drive.
Easily done, after you've copied it over launch iPhoto holding down the option (or alt) key and choose 'Locate'. Navigate to the new location and that''ll be your default iPhoto Library Folder thereafter.
    3) Import the remaining images that I've taken since switching to Aperture into iPhoto.
    That should work too.
But the key is, can you return the iPhoto Library Folder exactly as it was, otherwise you'll need to create and populate a new library - and that will inevitable mean losing your keywords in iPhoto too.
FWIW, I need to keep iPhoto going for others in the household who are daunted by Aperture. My solution is a referenced library pointing towards the iPhoto Library Folder / Originals folder.
    Regards
    TD

  • Finding proper A/B video switch for the imacs

I am a new convert and I have 2 imacs that are used at my church. I am currently using one for the video feed to our projectors with the mini DVI to VGA cable. I want to be able to use both imacs, but the imacs are having trouble finding a signal through our current A/B switch. We currently use an extron A/B switch which is quite good but the imac will not find it 3/4 of the time.
What A/B switch or how should I properly hook up in order to have the imacs find the signal each time?
    Thank you,

It's the correct place; you've just asked a question to which no one yet has a definitive answer (and if you ask any question around a major holiday, you need to be prepared to wait longer than normal for a reply).
I've had best luck with Iogear's KVMs, but I've never tried one with iMacs so I can't say whether or not an Iogear KVM would work better than your

  • Need help to back up imac 27inch

    hi
Turned imac off last night and powered it up this morning, all I had was the apple emblem and an upload bar below with a circular doing its thing in the middle and then shuts off.. spoke this morning to an apple advisor on the phone who took me through different procedures  e.g pressing cmd alt and p+r, also shift after power up but would still switch off..At the time could not find the start up disc. Did get through to disk utility and in first aid chose the macintosh hd and verified disk permissions , then verified disk but an error occured and could not verify..Tried repair disk and again an error occured and suggested backing up data and wipe hard drive and reinstall.. as my apple care came to an end last month I was referred to my local apple store which is over an hour away.. In the mean time I have found startup disk and was able to connect an external hard drive to reinstall  mac os x version 10.6.1 onto and run from the external drive and have now at least got the computer running.
I have 1000's of photos with my work on the macintosh hd and need them... and I am aware how to transfer photos , movies etc, but how can i manually transfer contacts, emails and itunes library also iphoto library to a second external hard drive  so that i can erase and reload operating software to the original hard drive
Or am i able to still choose which drive to back up  by using time machine
    thanks

  • Help me troubleshoot my iMac | random SPOD and freezes

ok, I am 1 step away from literally throwing this iMac out the window, but maybe someone has got an advice before I do so.
In the beginning of 2009, my iMac's harddrive went bad.
I was able to rescue everything via target mode so no big deal. I went and bought a new harddrive for it and replaced it myself. I found a very good guide for the whole procedure and after that I installed a fresh copy of OSX 10.4 on it.
Since then the system would start to do random freezes, sometimes for all running applications, and sometimes for just one or two simultaneously.
The freezes normally lasts between 10 seconds to 4 minutes and I have so far (1 year later) not been able to discover any kind of logic/pattern in these freezes.
Sometimes I can run a plethora of programs at the same time (iMovie, Photoshop, Quicktime, Safari, Pages etc) and everything goes fine for hours. Some times it will take me minutes to just launch Safari or Textmate.
Now, it isn't as though I haven't tried doing anything about it, it just that so far nothing have worked out.
Here is a list of things I have tried since it started in 2009
    - Running Repair Permissions (Disk Utility or holding down SHIFT when booting)
    - Running maintenance programs like Onyx, MacJanitor, Maintenance, iTools
    - Fixing font issues using FontBook, LinoType and FontNuke
    - Replacing/Upgrading RAM (I went from 1gb to 3gb)
    - Testing RAM with memtest
    - Running Disk Warrior
    - Disabling various processes/services (spotlight/mds etc.)
    - Uninstalling/upgrading/downgrading programs (mostly programs that I use alot like Firefox and Safari)
    - Upgrading the OS (first to Leopard, and then to Snow Leopard)
    - Re-installing OS X (I have tried different combinations like re-installing to Tiger, then upgrading to Leopard and SL, re-installing to Leopard without upgrading etc.)
There might be more but I really cannot remember.
Of course my focus has been mainly on the harddrive itself since this was the piece that got replaced, but everytime I run Disk Warrior or Onyx or any other diagnostics app I have come across, I am told that the harddrive is doing fine.
In the middle of 2009 I then created a 50gb partition on which I installed Win XP. This was because of some work related software that I needed to run. Now, on Win XP I have yet to experience any problems relating to the one I have on OSX. (Of course there are problems with Win XP, but none of them were relating to my specific issue here).
So as it is right now, and have been for too long, I'm better off running Win XP than I am running SL, and that just ****** me off..!
Does anyone here have an idea about what to do next?
I have thought about buying a new harddrive to replace the initial replacement drive, but if that is the only choice I have left, I would rather save up for a new iMac instead.
I have already spent more than enough trying to fix this one.
Here are some details about the system:
    Model-id: iMac5,1
Processor name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor speed: 2.16 GHz
    Processors: 1
    Cores: 2
    L2-buffer: 4 MB
    Memory: 3 GB
    Bus speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM-version: IM51.0090.B09
    SMC Version: 1.9f4
    OS Version: 10.6.2
Some of these are roughly translated by me from Danish.
Thanks to the people still reading this.

    Hi Kguy,
    Thank you for the reply.
The freezes happens when opening programs and when running them. And it happens with (as far as I know) all programs on the computer (including TimeMachine, Dashboard apps, Finder, login in/logging out etc.)
As far as I know this is not related to my network, but I will try you suggestion and disconnect the computer fully before running programs on the computer.
Sometimes when the freezes happen, everything on the computer freezes, even the seconds on the clock.
And if I am watching something in Quicktime/VLC/DivX and a freeze happens. After the freeze is over Quicktime will then resume x amount of time later in the movie. Where x is equal to the amount of time the froze lasted.
    Hope this helps clarifying
