Help! System keeps freezing

I have recently bought the new imac 21.5" running Snow Le opard(last month infact) and transferred my data from my previous imac running Snow Leopard using set-up assistant. After a couple of weeks my system froze and the only way to get out was to power down with the power button. After re-starting I was getting the file sign with the question mark, showing that the computer couldn't find my hard drive. After re-startingfrom  the Snow Leopard install disk it still couldn't find my hard drive, so I powered down again and left it til the morning and tried again starting from the boot disc - from here I saw that the hard drive was verified so I repaired the disc and permissions and restarted - everything was fine, no hard disc problems. However, this has happened now four times, the system completely freezes, I have to do a shut down and encounter the same problem each time, although after a few hours I can re-boot and get everything up and running. I thought originally it was a problem with an open application but the last time it happened (a couple of hours ago) I had nothing running, I had just turned on screen sleep. I am wondering if my time machine back-up drive may be the problem but not being computer savvy I haven't a clue. I would be very grateful for any advice given as I don't really know what to do next

I experienced a different reaction from my Mac book pro after installing wwan.
I actually connect to the internet using a Merlin data card for which this update was made but I live in Greece. What happens is my menu bar keeps quiting and coming back up every ten seconds or so ad noseum. This prevents me from doing pretty much anything since iTunes comes to foreground every time the menu bar gets going (every 10 sec). I spent all of yesterday trying to figure out a solution to no avail. I really need to unistall the wwan nightmare so if anyone from apple is reading this DO SOMETHING. I NEED TO GET BACK TO WORK!!!. And next time you come up with an update like this try to make it network independant or something.

  • System Keeps Freezing

    Hi Guys
I really need some help with this as it's really starting to wreck my brain. My iMac is running the latest software version 10.6.8 but what has started to happen is that if I have anymore then say 3 different programs open the whole system just freezes and it stays like that untill I force it to turn off by holding the power button. I'm thinking the maybe Safari is behind it all because it always seems to do it when Safari is open. I lost about 4 hours work of work yesterday and well lets just say some words were said to my iMac that I taught I'd never say to an Apple product. Has this happened to anyone else and if so how did you go about fixing it so that you can actually rely on it again. Seriously as I'm writing this I have no idea if I'll even get to post it.
Here are the specs of my iMac: 27" iMac, 2.8GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Oh and it doesn't even have to have that many programs open. I was on youtube this evening and the only thing that was going was Finder and Safari and all I did was while a video was playing clicked on a different video and well it's like Safari paniced and just froze. Seriously what's going on with it, please guys I would be thankful for any help or advise with this.
    All the best

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer. Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751 and restart your computer.

Also, on restart the computer emits and odd tone and the light on the front side blinks wildly for several seconds. Any help would be great, thanks in advance Robby

    Hi, Robby. to Apple Discussions.
It does sound like it could be bad RAM:

It's the extra 512 MB RAM module you need to remove.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a general summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a particular line of text to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
These are not specific instructions; just an overview. The details are in parts 7 and 8 of this comment. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in safe mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. Load this linked web page (on the website "Pastebin.") The title of the page is "Diagnostic Test." Below the title is a text box headed by three small icons. The one on the right represents a clipboard. Click that icon to select the text, then copy it to the Clipboard on your computer by pressing the key combination command-C.
If the text doesn't highlight when you click the icon, select it by triple-clicking anywhere inside the box. Don't select the whole page, just the text in the box.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window to activate it. Paste from the Clipboard into the window by pressing command-V, then press return. The text you pasted should vanish immediately.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • Photoshope Elements when selecting an action, the paint brush tool doesn't work and system keeps freezing, then catching up every 30-45 seconds

I have been having this problem with elements ever since the last OS upgrade, but it wasn't all the time and it wasn't very bad. Now, I have upgraded my macbook again, and I cannot even edit a photo!! I open the photo, choose an action, say "smooth skin", then choose the paint brush, I start to "paint" over their face and it won't paint a line, I have to keep clicking it, click - it paints, move brush, click again - it paints. Plus, every time I choose a tool or an action, it freezes for about 10 seconds, then catches up to what I am doing, 30 seconds later, it freezes again. HELP!! I have 8 sessions to finish editing by this weekend!! I just want to cry!!

Try deleting the prefs and the saved application state:

I keep getting a line of distorted pixels across the screen and sometimes a distorted portion of the page, which clears or appears in another area when I move the cursor over it. Often times my whole page freezes and I am left to the spinning rainbow and am forced to shut down with the off button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • System keeps Freezing-up

    Hi all,
I have just started having freeze-ups on my system. They get so bad that I have to force shut down via the power button. The problem then still causes the start-up to go all strange, sometimes it just shows the folder with the question mark and other times it goes into the normal set up but does not always get there. I have put in the Snow Leopard DVD into the drive to try and use the disk utility, but it does not always clear the following permissions which seem to be the same ones all the time.
Permission differ on System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Version/A/Resources/Deploy.bundle/Co ntents/Resources/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/Resource/Java/deploy.jar should be lrwxr-xr-x, they are lrw-r--r--.
Permission differ on System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Version/1.6.0/Resources/Deploy.bundl e/Contents/Resources/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/Resource/Java/deploy.jar should be -rw-r--r--, they are lrwxr-xr-x.
Permission differ on System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Version/1.6.0/Resources/Deploy.bundl e/Contents/Resources/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/Resource/Java/libdeploy.jni lib should be -rwxr-xr-x, they are lrwxr-xr-x.
I've had to re-install everything twice in the last 5 weeks after a long time trying to clear up the problem. Even that was a task. Sometimes the system did not respond after erasing the whole disk and yet other times all was ok. The thing is, the above permission errors keep on coming back.
    My system is as follows:
Mac 2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM running OS X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard
I've done a disk scan and it comes up clean, it just keeps coming up with the above permission problems.
I have even tried turning the computer on while pressing the "D", but nothing happens, it just goes into start-up mode.
Anybody with an idea what could be happening?
    Thanks in advance.
    All the best,
    Phil Rosa-Leeke

I've done that and it did not change anything. Came up saying the disk was ok, I even hit the repair a few times even though it said that just to play safe.

Try with your second stick alone in the same DIMM slot.

  • Recently updated to osx 4.6 and system keeps freezing????

If anybody has any suggestions, please try to walk me thru process of troubleshooting problem ... I'm not all that mac savy! Thanks in advance!

    Hi, trouts.
    1. What were you running prior to 10.4.6?
    2. You might want to treat the "freezes and hangs" problem similar to a kernel panic as the basic troubleshooting and hardware testing steps are virtually the same. See my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • System keeps freezing with lightroom...

i have a new macbookpro - 17" (293 process)(4gb) and i just began using Lightroom this w/e.. my system has already frozen 4 times.. i couldn't even force quit.. i had to actually shut off the computer each time to get it to close. The last time it froze i was viewing a slideshow with about 500 pictures ( which are kept on a separate hard drive), the other times it froze i wasn't really doing anything intensive. this isn't normal correct??? i bought this computer because i thought it could handle something like this easily. any insight? i did call applecare yesterday and they had me run some disk check repair thing.. and they were hoping that fixed whatever could be wrong.. but then later after i did that it froze again with the slide show.
    thanks

I've done that and it did not change anything. Came up saying the disk was ok, I even hit the repair a few times even though it said that just to play safe.

  • System keeps freezing after tiger upgrade - noticed diskwarrior ...

but diskwarrior asks for passwords ... this may be a dumb question, but what passwords does it need. My regular apple
    login and passwords aren't working???

It should be the regular PW that you use to log in or perform SW update.

Keep freezing up when put to sleep, will not wake up. iMac G5, system 10.5.8, help. What version of Flash do I need?

Probably the intermittent problem that effects some users (including me at various times). It seems that Bluetooth fails to wake properly. The 'fix' that works for me is to go to System Preferences>Energy Saver and set 'computer sleep' to 'never'.

  • New Macbook Pro 2012 keeps freezing (HELP!!)

It keeps freezing, it happens after a few hours, sometimes after a few minutes!!
First, the app (google chroome, safari, skype)  and then, the finder... I can move the cursor but it doesn't respond, the beach ball won't stop spinning and I had to force shut down by holding the power button (not once...two, three or four times a day)
I've done everything, disk utility almost every day (repair permissions), resetting the pram... I don't know what else to do... I was thinking about buying 8GB RAM (2x 4) but I don't want to waste my money if it's not going to work...
