HELP! System won't POST when SPD enabled

Here's my specs
P4 3.0ghz (800mhz FSB and HT)
MSI Neo2 Motherboard
512mb Kingston HyperX PC4000
Radeon 9800 PRO
2x 160gb Maxtor Ultra Series 8mb cache on Raid 0
I recently traded my HyperX PC3200 and replaced it (not added) with a HyperX PC4000-- before i switched out the ram, my PC3200 ran pretty smoothly. Now with the PC4000 in my computer instead, my computer will not Boot/Post when I have SPD enabled. Also it seems like 2.5 (or 2), 3, 3, 8, 4 are the settings that will actually let my computer boot properly.----- 3, 3, 3, 8, 4 will not. My voltage is set to 2.7, and its on Colonel for DOT, and Turbo for performance. Is there anything that will allow SPD to be Enabled? Is it a real problem? I literally have to reset my CMOS in order to get to the Bios to disable SPD and its kind of annoying.
My main questions are:
What does SPD do? and why doesn't my new memory allow it to be set on enabled? What are good timings to use?
oh, my computer also wont POST if I boost my FSB past 220mhz-- can anyone help me with that as well?

Please read Rules of the forum and Moan Guide, set up a full signature with ALL system specs.
The main problem here is that HyperX (please tell us part number or at least module size and quantity) PC3200 has CAS Latency of 2 (2.5 for 2 x 1Gb) where as PC4000 has CAS Latency of 3. Secondly, MSI 865 / 875 motherboards use MAT (Performance mode) to determine memory timings not SPD (or even manual in some cases) and even when set to slow, this can still affect your memory's ability to post. (For both of us it seems these mobo's will not allow CAS Latency =3 - set it manually and check with CPU-Z).
Try this:-
Frequency/Voltage Control
Dynamic Overclocking: Disabled
Performance Mode: Slow
CPU Ratio Selection: Locked
DRAM Frequency: 266 MHz
Spread Spectrum: Disabled
Adjust CPU Bus Clock (Mhz): 200
DDR Clock(Mhz): 400 (Greyed out)
Adjust AGP/PCI Clock(Mhz): 66.66/33.33
CPU Vcore Adjust: No
 CPU Vcore: 1.5250V (Greyed Out)
DDR Power Voltage: 2.70V
AGP Power Voltage: 1.55V
If you had to change Performance Mode to Slow, you will have to Save and Exit and then re-enter BIOS for all the following options to be available. If it was already Slow move straight to
Advanced Chipset Features
DRAM Timing Setting
Configure DRAM Timing by SPD: Disabled
CAS Latency: 3 Clocks
RAS Precharge: 4 Clocks
RAS to CAS Delay: 4 Clocks
Precharge Delay: 8 Clocks
Burst Length: 8 Clocks
Integrity Mode: Disabled
This effectively slows your memory right down and allows you to ascertain your CPUs maximum overclock. Raise the FSB and see how far you can go. Check stability with Memtest and prime95 and once you've found your sweet spot note it down. If you want to benchmark and then repeat the process for 5:4 ratio (Memory Frequency 333 MHz) and 1:1 (Memory Frequency 400 MHz). You can then try manually lowering your memory timing to get the absolute best performance, but FSB MHz is more important with the P4 + 865 / 875 chipset combo than memory timings. Technically, 1:1 ratio should give you the best results, but with the memory timing issues on these boards, my best performance comes from 5:4.
Hope this helps and Good Luck

Need help, system won't start up
When I turn on the system I hear a loud squeaking noise that could be coming from the hard drive, it does it for moment then a blank white screen appears w/ a tiny folder in the middle of the screen with a "?" blinking on and off on the folder. I never had any problems until now. What can I do, any suggestions.

    hi capitala1,
+When I try to install the operating system to the internal drive, I don't see a destination option for that drive like I did for the external+
Do you mean that it doesn't show up when you try to startup holding down the option key, or that it doesn't show up in Disk Utility when started up on the external disk?
+...You think the drive is bad, if so, what can I do to retrieve some of the data off of it.+
Yes, it sounds like your hard drive is bad. Do you have access to techtools or Disk Warrior? either of these may be able to repair the drive enough to extract your info from it, if disk utility can't.
I know that there are shops that specialize in extracting info from bad hard drives, but they tend to be pretty expensive. I am sure others on this forum will be able to help you find one if you are interested.

PS it isn't going to help this time, but remember in the future, backup, everything important to you regularly!

  • Help System won't boot

I'm stuck...I have several older P3 and K6 systems that won't even POST when I have a PI21AG card inserted. I have looked everywhere I can think of with no success.
    TIA, Kirby

Try it with the motherboard outside the case and setting on a non conductive surface having only the cpu with heatsink, video card and one stick of memory in the slot nearest to the cpu in the motherboard.  You can use a flat bladed screwdriver to momentarily short across the power switch pins on the motherboard to turn it on.  That will eliminate any possibility of the motherboard shorting against something inside the case.
Also check to see if there are any unused mounting posts or other objects underneath the motherboard that could short it out.

  • Help system launches wrong browser when I search

When I search the help of Illustrator or Photoshop, it launches my Opera browser.  I've only installed Opera for testing web designs.  I don't like it.  It's not my default browser.  How can I make it launch my default browser, or how can I specify a browser for the help system?
I'm using CS4 on Windows 7.  I've set the default browser in Windows.  Additionally I've used 'Default Programs' to set the various browser file types to my default browser.  The only place where Opera pops up is when I search the help system in the Adobe Creative Suite applications.  Everywhere else, the correct browser is launched.

Thanks for the help. I decided to give it another shot, and bought a new card. Popped the new one in and it worked the first time. Didn't even need to disable the HD Audio option in the BIOS.Guess I got a dud the first time. Now I have to return the old card.

  • System Won't Post to UEFI or boot

I was trying to upgrade to a SSD boot drive on my h9-1420t running Window 8 Pro 64 bit.  I modified the UEFI to legacy enabled and changed the boot order.  Boot failed.  I am unable to boot to windows or the UEFI.  No beeps.  I have tried clearing the cmos both via the battery and the jumper.  Still does not work.  Removing all sata cables and power to the devices also did not help.  When I removed both memory sticks, I did get 5 beeps.  Is there a way to reset the UEFI to system defaults in this situation?
    Thank you for your assistance.
    Mike

I thought I was being careful with static etc, hopefully it isn't the motherboard.
I have seen some threads that UEFI settings are kept even after clearing CMOS.  I was hoping there was some "hardware" way to know that the UEFI was restored to system defaults.
Thanks for your thoughts, Paul.  Appreciate it!

  • Help: System won't reboot and powers off

I'm going out of my mind here.
I've been putting together an A64 system for 3 weeks now, and I get the weirdest behavior.
I put the system together with the following components:
    Neo Platinum Bios 1.3
    A64 3000+
    MSI 128MB 6800
    1 512MB Kingmax ddr500 DIMM in slot 1
Antec sonata case with Antec tru380 PS
    NEC dvd burner
Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB IDE drive
I could get it to boot up and start installing windows, but when it formatted the drives and would go to reboot, it would instead just power down.  If I hit the power switch, it would either start the fans, but not post with the diag lights all lit red, or do nothing.  If I pull the power cord for about 10 seconds and plug it back it, it will usually then post again.
I've bought or borrowed the following components and used them trying to solve this:
    Antec NeoPower 480 PS
    A different A64 3000+
    2 different Mushkin pc2700 256MB sticks
    A seagate 200GB hd
    2 different cd/dvd burners
    A different case
    A GeForce 3ti200
A UPS to be sure it wasn't a house power issue
    Some additional notes:
Thinking it may be a heat or heat sensor issue after a poweroff, I went into the bios and watched the hardware monitor the temp reads 65C which seemed high, but I see here there is a temp reporting problem with the bios.  More than once, when I hit the escape key to exit the hardware mon, the machine powered off.
Refusing to be beaten I slowly managed to get windows XP with SP1 installed on this machine.  Maybe once out of ten times I can get it to reboot, the rest of the time, trying to reboot does as above.
A few times while in windows, it has powered itself down while doing random things, often while typing into it.
So, I've read several suggestions here today that I will try such as putting the memory into DIMM slot 2 or 3.  Perhaps, I just have 3 DIMMS that all don't work with this board.  That will sure make this a much more expensive upgrade.
I've also seen much mention of problems being caused by keyboards.  I find it baffling that a keyboard could cause the above problems, especially the power cord needing to pulled for 10-20 seconds, but I will replace that that as well.
Does anyone have any other suggestions as to what is happening?  Could the board be bad?  It would be the second bad board I've gotten in trying to build this system.  The first was by another brand and had leads on the bottom of the board that were partially melted or scraped off, which is why I switched to the Neo Platinum.  Am I just the most unlucky person in the world????
    Help and thanks,
    mike

It very well could be power supply, even the one you temporarily installed could not have delivered enough amperage to get it through one of the more strenuous periods of system boot-up. You will need a healthy 22 to 24 amps PSU. Also, make sure the RAM you have installed, or tested with - is listed on MSI's test report for this board. Per RAM type, some sticks are only approved to run in certain slots.
Sounds to me either a RAM or PSU or both RAM and PSU issue. In addition...heat could also be a problem.

  • Help system won't load

Lately, I haven't been able to access the Mac OS X system help. I'm running 10.3.9 (just reinstalled and re-updated, etc.) and when I try to run Help, it starts to come up and then just goes away.... won't load.
    Ideas, suggestions welcome.
    Thanks, Daniel

This is a common bug in Panther. The solution to this problem is simple though:
    • (~ means your home directory)
Go to ~/Library/Preferences and delete the following files......
    com.apple.help.plist
com.apple.helpui.plist (you may or may not have this one).
    com.apple.helpviewer.plist
Next go to ~/Library/Caches and delete the folder......
    com.apple.helpui
Log out and log in. If the problem is gone, empty the trash. If not, put everything back.

  • XPx64 won't load when RAID enabled

I have done a fresh install ( WIN XPx64 Pro) on a new 990FXA-GD80 and the system appeared to be working well without any problems. I then went into the BIOS and enabled RAID mode and on reboot followed through ( Control-F) with configuring 2 x 1.5 TB hard drives that are occupying SATA ports 5 and 6. This procedure seemed to work well.
On re-booting the problem occurs after post and when Windows begins to start up just for a split second and then instantly reboots from scratch.
Back into BIOS and disable RAID mode and then Windows runs just fine again.
Next I re-formated the main drive, flashed the BIOS to latest version, did a fresh install of Windows and followed through with setting up the RAID and configuration once more. This has made no difference...... the problem still occurs.
I really don't want to spend too much time on working on this problem since I can slip in a RAID card that I had in my previous machine but if someone can suggest a possible solution it would be much appreciated.

You have to set up the RAID first and then install Windows on it, not the other way around. Remember that you will have to integrate the RAID Drivers during Windows setup.

  • Need some help, system won't boot now.

Yesterday, I was having trouble getting WinXP installed on my SATA drive...after I tried some stuff to no avail, I decided to call it a night.  When I got up, I went to boot up the system and now all that happens is the 1 LED light flashes and the CD-ROM LED light flashes(and even these don't happen all the time).  Nothing else happens, fans don't start etc.  So I need some help on troubleshooting this prob.  When I do start it up, the D-bracket LEDs flash 4 red also, just flash like the other LED lights.  My first guess would be that the PSU is dead?  My PSU is a Antec Truepower 380W.  Any help is much appreciated.

Believe Bas; As he is 100% Correct, as even 18 Amps is not anywhere enough on the +12V Rail nowadays, I mean I think the New "Minimum" Should be No Less than 25 Amps on the +12V Rail, With these new Powerful Vidio Cards, that Require thier own "Molex" Power Supply Connected to them (As most of these Top Nvidia FX, and ATI Pro's) Need and they can demand up to 6 Amps themselves, I mean, these Cards Have 400 and 550MHZ GPU's on them with over 100 Million Transistors, Not to mention the Extra 256MB of High Speed Graphics memory, Add this with a New 64BIT CPU, and a Sound Card, and a Couple of S-ATA's in RAID, And the 1GIG of High Speed System RAM, and you Are At or Over 18 Amps Already , And we are not even talking CD and DVD's or the At least 4 Fans that you should have ...Yep I for one say the Day's of the 18 Amp Min. Rating for the +12V Rail are Gone Forever...Why do you think that all the Really Good PSu's have At Least 30 Amp Ratings on thier +12V Rails......And in the Case of Enermax, They even went as Far to Start Building thier PSU's With 2 (Dual) +12V Rails ...Thats right, Now they have a +12V-1, and a +12V-2 , Now the CPU gets it's OWN Dedicated +12V Rail, and the System Gets the +12V-2 Rail.......I just got the new Enermax for my 3RD Rig that I'm Building (Dual Opteron 248) Rig , with Bas's Help of Coarse.....But For $99.00 US  It was the Best Money spent yet, so much, for a little Price, as the Antec Units are More expensive...And I hear that they are doing a little Cheating on thier Amp Ratings these Days ..Ask "Wonk" he will tell you...  ..............Sean REILLY875

  • (SOLVED) K8N SLI Platinum won't post with Saphire 5750

Hi everyone. Hope you all had a nice Xmas.
This is my first post on the forums.  I’m  from Portugal ,so I might write things that won’t make much sense to you but I´ll try to keep it simple.
I bought a Sapphire 5750 vapor-X for my kid's PC and I’m afraid I’m yet another one with the “black screen, no post” syndrome. I have tried the card on another system and it works fine.
    What I did:
    Remove old card (6800GT)
    Put new card in
    Reset  CMOS
Switch PC on… no image on screen.
The fan on the graphics card starts spinning, the blue lights are ON, but no dice. My HDD LED stays on, my CD+DVD drives LEDs keep flashing  but system  won’t  post, not  even show MSI logo.
If I remove new card and get my old one back in the PC, it will post first time.
I have spent Xmas reading forums and haven’t found anything but a lot of ppl with the same problem and no real solution for it.
Hope you guys can help .

Warning about the HD5770 well at least on my computer the XFX HD5770 + a PCIe 1.0 slot = doesn't work. Again this was on my computer. I have another computer that it ran on fine using a PCIe 2.0 slot (Asrock 780g board), but my MSI K9A Platinum would not power that card. So you may need to replace your motherboard if it uses a PCIe 1.0 slot.

  • MSI P67AGD55 B3; Won't post

    Hello everyone!
I just bought a new system for a friend, and I can't get it to post for some reason. I have built multiple systems before. Here's the system
    MB; MSI P67AGD55 B3
    CPU; Intel Core i3 3220
    Ram; Crucialr 2x4GB Ballistix 12800
    PSU; Antex Earethwatts 650W
    GPU; AMD 6770
    etc etc
Basically system won't post and I went through and tried 1 stick of ram, a different stick of ram in the main slot, no ram, no GPU, no HD etc attached.
When the computer starts it does 4 (i think1 long 3 short?) beeps, reboots, repeat.
Something makes me think it's bad ram but I'm not sure.

Which BIOS is currently on that board ? Check the little green sticker on the BIOS chip and post that.
I suspect that the board still has the initial BIOS versions for Sandy support.
You have added an Ivy CPU and for that you need the new IVY BIOS support series.
To flash the board, you will have to get a supported CPU first, either family or friends or a helpful PC shop.
My personal choice with that CPU would have been a 7 series board in the same price bracket.

  • System won't boot-no chime.

Despite repeated attempts and resetting the CUDA button, the system won't boot when start button is pressed. In the first few seconds it seems to make normal sounds; but no chime and settles into simply fan noise. This is true even if using C (with an Install CD). or Shift key. Is there anything else I can try? (I know it's actually a G3 B&W Motherboard; but I had nowhwere else to post it)

I do not remember exactly what was happening when it stopped. It may have been executing something , hung up, and wouldn't respond to the Command-Opt-Esc or I do remember one incident when it was booting up and stopped when it was partly thru "searching for local discs.
I checked the ref. article and tried to measure the voltages on the power connector. I was never quite sure what pin was what, since the colors did not jive with those in the article. At any rate 2 were approx. + 5 V (one was 4.85), the rest were essentially zero (I believe 1 or 2 were about 300 mv). I did notice that when the power connector is reconnected and start up is attempted, 3 little green lights come on on the motherboard. One goes off after a while.
I have tried the old Sonnet upgrade and have tried reseating all the RAM modules. All to no avail.
The Hard drive and all other parts seemed to be working fine prior to the failure.
