Help thinking buying a W530 with RAID hardware or software
I'm thinking to buy a W530 with RAID. I have no experience with RAID and never thought that RAID is possible in a labtop.
I have read that RAID comes in types of implementation, software or with a hardware controller. In this forum I read that in the W530 service manual the RAID controller has been disappeared from the motherboard (I have not checked by myself).
Does anyone know if RAID is still implemented by a hardware and not by software.

From the forums and the rep I spoke with, RAID is implemented in the hardware. You will not be able to enable RAID later on if you did not order it like that from the factory.
You would probably be better off going SSD in the primary and a larger capacity HDD in the ultrabay. You'll have better speed, more reliability, and lower power consumption in general compared to 2 HDD in RAID 0.

If an external keyboard works as well as the software keyboard it would seem to appear that the issue is related to the keyboard itself (hardware).
For something like that you'll need to get the unit into a service provider for further diagnostics. -
I have updated everything and I am trying to watch the WWDC online and it keeps playing Matt and Kim "Lets Go!" and not allowing me to watch. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this is happeneing? I am already using Safari version 5.1.9 and my mac is running version 10.6.8. Any suggestions?

Buying Macbook pro with Premiere Pro CS5.5 Help needed DPU?
I am gearing for film a video production. Buying the macbook pro and I PP CS 5.5. Current project I want to use PP CS5.5 rather than FCP. I am new to all this. All I want to do now is cut and sound edit with some efx matting and titles etc. Do I need a DPU right now? Is so what is a basic one low cost? (I've seen bad reviews on the nvidia) Any help would be great I am buying all this soon.

Who needs the FW 800 ports when you can daisy chain up to six devices through the Thunderbolt port? The MBP has one TB port and the new iMac has two TB ports. Take a look at these links:

my ipod classic is visible in windows but not in itunes, this happens on 2 different computers where my iphone and ipod touch work fine which leads me to think something is up with the ipod itself and i cant find any threads to help.

Need urgent help with RAID failure on Graphics server (running OSX10)
Hey.
Here's the deal... Our graphics department has a MAC G4 (fully upgraded. newest patches, OS, etc.) that's got a 4 port SATA RAID controller. They use this with four 750GB hard drives as an external RAID (the OS is on a seperate, 65GB hard drive). The way it's set up, through Apple's OS, is we have the four 750GBs in pairs... those pairs are striped, and then the two sets of striped 750s are mirrored. This has worked just fine for a number of months, but we recently had a power surge, and now we're unable to mount "Monkey" (the name of the 1.4TB array).

As you can see in this and the below screenshots, this shows the 1.4TB Striped set as 'online', but the two below (the two 750GB hard drives) show up as "offline".

If i click the entire array, you can see how it's set up (the Mirrored RAID set consisting of the two Striped RAID sets). The RAID sets (all 3 of them) are showing up as online, yet the drives are offline. No idea why. The drives are all powered, and are spinning, and plugged in.

when you click "Monkey Drive", nothing shows up in it. i don't remember if anything ever used to. if you click 'mount', nothing happens.

Really need help; this is a pretty critical problem. Someone that's familar with RAID solutions on MACs please help me out. We can't risk losing any data if at all possible.

my final cut is running extremely slow after having for 6 months. What did Apple tell you about what they did (or did not) find here?
See if working on the main disk is any faster.
USB2 is glacial, as I/O interconnects go. And USB2 disks have been known to fail, or sometimes to drop back to USB1 speeds, too. FireWire 800 is substantially faster than USB2, but still not as fast as the internal drive connections can provide.
Put another way, start varying your configuration, and see which configuration changes (still) have the problem, and which don't. -
I wonder if somebody can help me. I am not able to use my internet bank anymore, since Java launched their latest update (7.51) a few days ago. Appearently this one is not compatible with my hardware. I am using Mac OSX version 10.6.8, and Java version 17.0, which seems to be the newest one for my op sys. Anybody know how I can solve this? I'm 51 years old and recently retired. I have a new IPad Air. Which MacBook should I buy to go with it? I don't understand flash storage. It feels like I would have a bunch of flash drives to keep up with. Help an old lady out!!!
Depends on how you want to use it. Flash storage on the newer macbook and macbook air are built in. A macbook air is the most light weight and a very good machine. It will do all you want it to do unless you are running some very intensive programs. If you go to the apple store on line you can compare the different macbook pro" and macbook Air's.

Any suggestions?If it was indeed purchased with a different apple ID then there is no work around for what you want! You can try signing in with your daughter's apple ID and password and update the app and purchase whatever you want then log back in with your apple ID. This may work!

Thanks, I was thinking so. I installed my CS4 from a CD in 2008, and it looks like Adobe has taken another approach to selling their products. I'll be downloading CC Photoshop a little later today.

I have an early 2009 Mac Pro Quad Core with 2.66. I am curious about using RAID. Do I have to have separate hard ware installed to enable RAID? I have 2 x 1 TB Western Digital Black in Bay 0 and Bay 1. I was wondering if I can enable RAID without the Mac Pro Raid card. If so what are my options. I heard RAID 0 & 1. Can anyone confirm or expand?
I have two brand new Western Digital 1 TB Black drives. I want to insert them into my mac pro without OS X (Snow Leopard) installed.
If I install the drives boot to the install DVD how would I go about setting up the drives in RAID config?
After choosing your language, select Disk Utility in the "Utilities" menu> It can create the RAID set
Once that is done how do I install OS X?
Just boot the install DVD. It will treat the RAID set as a single disk drive.
In addition if I go with RAID 0, what happens when one of the drives fails?
You lose all the data on the RAID set.
If I go with RAID 1 and one of the drives fails (for example in drive bay 0) do I just plug a new drive in and restart the computer and the RAID rebuilds itself and boots into Snow Leopard with no problem?
That's what should happen. Don't count on RAID-1 as your only backup, though. A software or user error that causes data loss will do it on both drives. -
Help me buy a new computer suitable for Arch
Hello all Arch users.
About 1½ years ago, a mate convinced me to try out Arch Linux. It was about the same time as I also bought myself a TFT monitor. I've grown rather fond of Arch since then, and refuse to use anything else (except at work where I have to use Windoze).
But I've also been having some eye-problems for the last year or so, and I'm blaming partly my Phillips 190S monitor, and partly backlight/brightness settings in Arch, which I have been unable to change. Last thursday these eye-problems accelerated and gave me so much trouble I was unable to use a computer or TV or even go outside for days. I can't live a life that boring! :-| I have to be able to use my computer 25 hours a day.
I've searched a bit on the forum and found that I'm not the only one having some eye-problems with Arch. One solution apparently is to use xbacklight command, which just doesn't work on my system. I found another graphics-card which I tried, but it used the same drivers, so still no xbacklight command. Anyway, I don't want to make a big story out of it either, since I've decided to buy a new computer and monitor now. I want a low-noise system anyway, so....
The monitor will be some expensive stuff that should be very kind to the eyes, so I'm pretty sure that part can't be better. But should you have a recommendation for a great monitor that's kind to the eyes, do share.
I'm thinking that the hardware otherwise might not be compatible with Arch for reasons I'm sure I wouldn't know about. Also, I'm interested in knowing if there's any graphics-cards that suits Arch better than others. And finally, my Arch system is a little broken, and a fresh install probably isn't a bad idea. (I'm no Linux hardcore user, but I definitely know I prefer any Linux distro over Windoze).
So I decided to put down the stuff I'm thinking of getting, and maybe someone will tell me if they know of any problems with that hardware and Arch, or maybe recommend me something else.

There's no graphics-card on that list, because there's a built-in one one the motherboard, and I don't really need it for games, but rather system-development and such. But if you believe that a certain graphics-card will improve picture quality, or be more kind to the eyes, then do tell me. (I doubt it, but if you think so, lemme know).
Any other advises regarding brightness and be-kind-to-your-eyes-stuff is also welcome. So far I've installed www.sharpfonts.com, but it's too soon to say if it helps.

I'll definitely look into that flourescent lighting thingy, although I think/thought I had enough light around me already.
I have also tried having brightness at 0, and even contrast at 0 also. Also using the nvidia settings.
Anyway, it would seem I've found one of the reasons. Apparently, for some weird reason, Arch hasn't offered me 60hz, but rather lower odd numbers such as 53hz. So I've been using a rather lower frequency, which logically should explain at least some of the reason.
While Windows lets me go as high as 75hz with this current 17" monitor I've tried instead of my 19" monitor, Arch won't even let me have 60hz. I've tried various xorg.conf settings, and even got one mailed to me which doesn't change anything. So that's two monitors I've tried where Arch doesn't deliver the hz I want, but where Windows does fine and more. That can't be right. I'm using the nvidia drivers, and have tried two graphics cards.
I'm buying a better monitor regardless though, something that's extra kind to the eyes somehow. I'm thinking 19-22" with some fancy techniques to reduce whatever it tough on the eyes. Maybe a fresh install of Arch will help getting the hz needed. I need to do that anyway on the new computer.
I also tried booting Ubuntu from a CD to check how that seemed, and while the Ubuntu desktop and fonts did seem more calm and eye-friendly, I must admit I'd been looking at it too much at that time to be sure I wasn't just kidding myself. -
Can't install Win7 with Raid 0 on a K9A2 CF
Motherboard: MSI K9A2 CF
DDR: 8GB (4*2GB)
Proc: AMD Athlon 620
HDD's: 2*Hitachi 640GB (same drive models)
So the problem i'm having is that i can't get Windows7 to get installed in raid 0. I bought this set of hardware to do some experimenting with small business server 2008. I've installed SBS2008 in Raid 1, and seemed to work (but i've never crashed a disk to test it). The tests went fine, and since a month or two this PC/Server is doing nothing.
Now i've been trying to get Windows7 installed but can't get it going with a Raid 0 setting (that's why i'm doubting if the RAID 1 with sbs was working correctly).
First problem i'd run into was that my DVD wasn't accepted (missing device driver). I've created a bootable USB disk and seem to work.
The problem starts when i should select the disk.
First, i've setup the following in the RAID-Bios:
I've done it with 1 array, or with 2 array's it doesn't change anything.
In the normal bios (updated last night to the latest version, which actually slows the systems down during the install). I've selected RAID in this screen
RAID (i've selected RAID)
When i get the option to select a drive, it doesn't display any drives so I select the option to add a driver.
These are the drivers i've downloaded:
But when selecting these drivers I've get a negative response
(with or without "Hide drivers that are not compatible......"
When i download other drivers (I actually tried them all) i get some response:
But when i select this driver, it takes several minutes to proces:
But it comes back blank:
When i select in the bios other options (like IDE)
It comes default with a disk:
But this is half of the array (1 drive). When i try to partition it, it fails. So it isn't accessible.
Last thing: i've tested with all 3 available Bios options (IDE, RAID and AHCI) in combination with all (Win7, Vista and WinXP) drivers. But there are no differences.
I understand i made a long post, but normally i just figure it out myself with researching on the web. I have tried everything i can think of. But it seems that:
1. I made an error configuring the raid-arrays (with one big array, the results are the same).
2. I made an error in the bios? (setting should be raid, other settings i should think of?)
3. I'm working with the wrong drivers? I think i'm doing something wrong driver related but can't pin the problem.
4. Or... ?
I'm open to suggestions, i've run out of option. :(

Great link, seems to work. So after trying everything it was just a simple driver error.
I've tried the drivers from 1337 but they didn't work. But the chinese drivers did work:

I don't know how or what. But the RAID console seemed to get 2 disks (2 raid arrays) and installed and formatted correctly from there on.
Installed Win7, booted and all the hardware was accepted.
If anyone has a line to MSI or someone from MSI is reading this: If needed i'm willing to run some kind of debugger if it helps. But otherwise I would suggest checking the drivers offered on the website because the drivers on the MSI website are faulty for some of your users. On the K9A2 they will not work with RAID with Windows 7 64-bit (the official drivers I mean).
Bas to answer your question: I have no particular interest in running a 64-bit operating system. But when it failed to work it became a challenge to get it working. I could have switched to 32bit immediatly but I don't like to give up the first moment something doesn't go as planned, and in the end I had so much time invested I just wanted it to work under 64bit .
