Help! This is annoying!

My Ethernet connection keeps dropping on my iBook after only a minute after connecting. The “internet connect” program shows that I am still connected to the internet, but pages will not load in Safari and I get a “You are not connected to the internet” message. I have to disconnect the connection and then connect again. That will connect to the internet again for another minute and then it disconnects again. This just started to happen. An airport connection is unstable also. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This sounds like a router problem to me.
Is this router provided by your ISP? If so, contact them and let them know that you think you're having problems with it. My ISP replaced the router they provided for us without much hassle. They may also be able to help you get things sorted out with some sort of firmware update.
If this is your own router or you really, really don't like the tech support line, go look at the router and figure out which model of router it is and who makes it. Go to the company's website (for example, D-Link) and look up the online support for your make and model of router. Read up and see if there are any firmware updates and download them, you may need to reflash firmware that has become corrupted. The file you download will not mean anything to the computer, only to the router, so don't bother trying to execute it.
You will probably have to login to a router configuration screen (probably in a browser) in order to perform a firmware update, in this case, make sure you're plugged into the router through an ethernet port to avoid corruption of the firmware file during transfer. Then try again and see if you're internet connection isn't more stable. If the problem persists, call tech support, either for your router or the ISP.

    I personally like to Crop, and then use PNG for my screen-caps. If I need more images, say to show other Palettes, etc., then I do one each for those shots.
    We see a lot of full-screen caps posted, where aggressive JPEG is used, and nothing can be read. That is especially true with images, like Adobe Encore's Flow-chart, where there is a lot of text and linking being shown.
    Just my personal preferences.

    This is caused by the InternetEngine - Powering Applications! extension. If you uninstall that extension it should stop this happening.

  • How do I stop this extremely annoying noise?

    Whenever I record a movie in imovie with my built-in isight camera and built-in microphone, there is this incredibly annoying background noise - a fast beeping that almost seems to represent the cadence of the frame rate. I thought it was some kind of tool but when I save the event and play it in quicktime on its own, the beeping remains!!! Its killing me. Please help me make it stop.
    I apologize if this is a topic that has already been covered, I'm not sure how to find out if it has.

    Mate, I HIGHLY, HIGHLY doubt that the hum of my computer is the cause of this noise. The volume of the noise is significant enough to be a major issue. It is not a light static or low-level humming. It is fast beep, going off at a rate of about 25 per second. If it were part of an ichat or phone call the average person would not tolerate the sound and think there is an error. Plus, the noise is sharp, clear, rhythmic, and unheard in any other situation but this use of imovie.
    Thanks for the input, mate, but the likelihood this explanation is correct is extremely low. Anybody else with an explanation/solution that doesn't involve buying a replacement microphone?

  • IPhoto library is a behemoth on my MacBook pro -- help this Mac Grandma out

    Don't laugh at me ( if you do, be really quiet about it!)
    Here's the deal: Out of fear of losing photos, I have made a monster out of my iphoto library. It now takes up 34GB of space on my MacBook Pro. There are duplicates in there and well, it's a mess. (I have ghost images of some photos, for example).
    I want to start fresh but not lose photos and data and album names. I have copied the iPhoto Library folder to DVD. I have run the backup program with iLife (to 300GB LaCie Extreme). I have even copied the iPhoto Library folder to the LaCie three times and each time renamed with the date (e.g. iPhoto Library 9/15/07; iPhoto Library 11/13/07, etc. ). Now I have so many duplicates, I don't trust the way I've used backup, and to top it all off - I have little to no space on my MacBook Pro. It's as slow as a my old Powerbook 180 running three programs at once.
    1. How do I free up the space on my MBP and yet still work on current photos in iPhoto on it and adding to my iPhoto Library without carrying around every picture (and then some) I have ever taken on my laptop. Should I start from scratch with a whole new library? Then how do I work with old photos from the older iPhoto library.
    2. What's the best way to back it up.
    3. Would iLife '08 help or would that complicate matters?
    4. Any advice on duplicates? How to I find duplicate photos, delete them, but make sure I have not lost the image and data?
    Any help would be appreciated before my MBP with 1.99 GB left crashes.

    You've got a nice project to keep you busy over the xmas!
    1. You MUST first make space on the disk - you're in immediate danger of a very serious OS crash if you don't. The fastest way to do this is to move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    To deal with duplicates: check out Duplicate Annihilator

    The first one, my private home email, works fine. With the other 3, I get the message "Cannot get mail: The connection to the server failed"
    All were working fine before the 8.3 upgrade. I did try the old trick of making one minor change on the account and resaving, but that did not change anything. I even deleted my work account and re-entered it from scratch, but again, sadly, no luck. For the time being, I am successfully getting the email via IMAP, but this ***** compared to exchange. Anyone have any idea what is happening or if a fix is in the works?

    Well, the one set up on exchange 2k3 is now working fine, although no changes were made on either the iPhone or the exchange side, so that's fun, but it still is throwing errors when connecting to the other 2 exchange accounts. The common elements are that both non-functioning exchange accounts are google apps for business accounts. So is one of the ones that's working, by the way. The settings on both accounts are the same as the one that's working, and both worked fine before the 8.3 upgrade. I have no issue accessing both of these accounts on my ipad which is currently on 8.2.x. If it's not the iphone OS at fault, I'm at a loss as to what it could be.

    a further message  box states that Data Execution Prevention has closed the program.
    Try updating your QuickTime to the most recent version. Does that clear up the DEP errors in iTunes?

    Hi, Thank you so much for the info.... I really do appreciate it. We had the laptop updated by way of a system upgrade with RAM and an additional SSD drive. Once reconfigured all programs were reinstalled but Iphoto is not among them. Iphoto was on the laptop when purchased so we have no additional discs. Before the laptop was updated we backed the photos up to an extrenal hard drive so we have them, but cant access them. Could I purchase Iphoto 8 stll? Would this work? We would also require an external CD drive as we no longer have the disc drive in the laptop (I think the extra new bits took over). You may have noticed I have very limited knowledge on computers so any help dispite how simple it may sound to some would help me greatly. I just want all my photos back .... Thanks inadvance...     I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
    When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
    At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
    I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

    If you have an iPod Touch you can watch movies on it.
    Did you sync the movie with iTunes between your computer and your iPod ?
    Connect iPod touch to a USB 2.0 port on your Mac or PC using the included cable.
    Follow the onscreen instructions in iTunes to set up iPod touch and sync your music, video, photos, and other content.
    Your computer must be connected to the Internet.
    By default, iTunes automatically syncs all songs and videos in your iTunes library to iPod touch.
