HELP thought fixed w/diskwarrior, won't start again

A hardware check on my powerbook revealed bad memory. I took out the faulty memory card, and have rebuilt the directory with the good one intact using Diskwarrior. So it seems that I should be able to at least start up my computer with the one good memory card while I purchase another, but now during start-up it freezes on "Waiting for Printer Services". Does anyone have any suggestions?

It won't hurt to try running DW again. But if you had bad memory in the Powerbook, it's entirely possible that more than just your hard disk directory has been damaged: you may have individual files that are damaged, too, and neither DW nor any other disk utility can fix files that have been damaged by partial overwriting, partial erasure, or having gobbledygook written to them, any of which can happen as a result of bad memory.
If DW continues to give you a clean bill of health but the computer still won't start up, the HD directory is OK, but you probably have damaged files that are essential to the boot process. In that case, it may be necessary to reinstall the OS. Since the directory is sound, an Archive and Install should be sufficient: no need to erase the disk first.
Note, however, that some of your own files could also have been damaged. You won't find out about that until you try to open a damaged file, and it doesn't. I hope you had backed all important data up before the bad-memory problem appeared.

  • Need urgent help! Mac OS X won't start up. Disk Utility can't find harddisk

I started up my computer today, and instead of booting into Mac OS X, the screen shows a folder with a question mark on it. I can startup my machine using my Panther disks that i've got, but when I go to disk utility, it can't find my hard disk. Looks like the hard disk is not mounting at all.
If i try to install Mac OS X, that also doesn't give me a hard disk to install it on..
I really need help on this because I was supposed to get work done today.
Would diskwarrior sort this problem out?
    Cheers

    Hi, Ken.
Start with the troubleshooting steps outlined in "Mac OS X: Your Mac won't start up."
If you're running Tiger (your profile does not indicate what version of Mac OS X you are using) and you only have the Panther install discs, do not use Disk Utility from the Panther discs on your startup disk. See "Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes."
I recommend you have someone at home send you all the discs you should have with you (Apple Hardware Test, Tiger Install Discs, Software Restore and Install discs, etc.) for your eMac by overnight courier, e.g. FedEx.
When you recover from this problem, it's also time to consider investing in a comprehensive Backup and Recovery solution. For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • B noir Help ME! 7.01 won't start and I'm stuck

b noir, I've followed a couple threads where you address the problem where iTunes 7 won't start. I've tried to follow most of the advice you and others have given but nothing is working for me.
    So far, I've:
    * Searched for Malware (nothing)
    * Tried to reinstall QT on top of existing QT (couldn't install)
    * Uninstalled from install programs for both QT and iTunes, rebooting, then reinstalling (didn't fix anything)
    * Uninstalled QT from Windows Install Cleanup and then doing the repaired from iTunes install with and without virus scan turned on.
*Uninstalled QT & iTunes from Windows Install Cleanup, rebooting, and reinstalled QT on its own then iTunes.
QT opens just fine on its own. And I also deleted the QT directory in Program Files and the two QT files in System 32.
Please help. I'm irrationally mad at Apple at the moment.

    b noir-
It looks like you're crazy busy. I finally got the little bugger to work by reading one of your old posts about replacing the Pref files.
navigate to the following folder and open it up:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\
("<username>" is the name of the account you're crashing in.)
inside, you should see an "iTunes.pref" file and an "iTunesPref.xml" file. rename them "iTunes.pref1" and iTunesPref.xml1". move them to your desktop.
now navigate to the following folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\
inside, you should see another "iTunes.pref" file and another "iTunesPref.xml" file. rename them "iTunes.pref2" and iTunesPref.xml2". move them to your desktop.
restart the PC. log in to the user account that itunes is crashing in. try launching itunes again.
the itunes setup assistant should run. (much like it did the first time you launched itunes after you installed it for the first time.) it's rebuilding the itunes preference files while you're doing that.

  • Help! my Mac Mini won't start up!

    Hi,
Bought my Mac Mini (server editino) a week ago. Been playing with it & so far so good.
But tonight, I went 'Log off administrator', it thought about it for a while and the screen when blue and flashed every now and then. I forced shut down by holding down the power button at the back.
Now, it won't start up at all. When I push power button, I hear the chime & I get the white screen with the Apple log with the spinning thing at the bottom. It stays here forever...
I've tried reseting the PMU and the SMC. No difference.
I've also tried doing a remote reinstall from my other MAC. The Mac Mini picks up the remote DVD drive but then when I click on it, it does the same thing... spin spin spin...
Any ideas guys? thanks in advance!!

ok, on my 5th attempt at doing a remote install it actually worked... I'm in the process of reinstalling Snow Leopard Server now... fingers crossed...
can't believe I killed it within 1 week!

  • Help! 10.3.9 won't start up or install 10.5.6

Ok I did a really stupid thing. I bought OS X 10.5.6 thinking it could install when I scrapped the computer of it's system software to see what happened but I tried to start up to install it and it did not unfort. It gets a Mach Kernal error and won't start up from any other oold software disks either. I don't know why that is. The OS on there is 10.3.9 but I don't have the disks for it anymore, they are long gone lost. So do I have to buy a whole new copy of 10.3.9 in order to fix this? Will buying 10.3 or 10.3.4 for a cheaper price reinstall the system software?

    Hi IcyCool7227!
With additional RAM, the 17" eMac G4/1.25 GHZ will meet the Leopard System Requirements.
The posted RAM System Requirement, is the bare minimum.
For optimum performance, more is recommended.
The original pre-installed version of OS X was Panther 10.3.3.
Therefore, as Limnos posted, you cannot install Puma 10.1.3.
You must uses a version of OSX, that is Panther 10.3.3 or higher.
    Additional info HERE.
Again as Limnos posted, you need the Full Retail Version, of the Leopard Install DVD.
The disc should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on it.
    Is that what you have?

My iPad 2 won't start even if I already went through pressing the home and start buttons simultaneously. I also tried charging the batteries for more than 30 minutes (done this procedure twice) but it won't still power on. What should I do next? Could it be a hardware issue then?

  • Help!!! G5 won't start up AT ALL!

I left this morning and the G5 was on. When I came back it was off (no one except me lives here). The power button won't start it. I checked the plug, checked the power, and other devices on the strip are working--is there some fuse that can be reset to make it start again?
I have a very big job that needs to be done right now! What could be wrong?

Try resetting the PMU or SMU, depending on your Power Mac G5 model.

  • Help! Stuck on white screen after sleep mode and won't start again!

Bought the iMac last week, updated to 10.5.1. Worked well until this morning after I did a security update. Then put it in sleep mode - and basta! After I wanted to work on it again - it didn't restart. So, I had to switch off using power button, but it never started again and always got stuck on the white screen with the Apple logo and the rotating loop. Tried to repair permissions - cannot do it, as it says there is an error. Tried to re-install from DVD the Leopard while archiving the previous information - can't do either - says error. Now trying to re-install it again with an erase option. But this is not a good option, people! This is pretty very much disappointing, Apple!
    Can anyone help, please!

Boy that is way too bad.
Could you tell us what the error message was?
While sometimes the error messages are not very informative, other times they are. That might be a clue as to what is going on.
When you restart from the DVD you have the option to access Apple's Disk Utility and repair the disk.
You might want to try that, skip repairing permissions at this point.
You can also reset the computer by unplugging all cables including the power cable for at least 15 seconds and then plug in the power cable and keyboard and restart.
You can reset the PRAM by holding down the command-option - p - r keys simultaneously during restart and waiting for the startup chime then releasing those keys after the second chime to allow the start to continue.

  • Crashed while export and won't start again...

Hi guys, i just want to ask, why my PPro, doesn't want to start, it only shows the startup and then shows the application with white screen, after that it closes by itself. no error message or anything. it started when my laptop crushed while i exporting the movie. the screen went crazy. so i shut down the laptop. after that my PPro CS3 won't start. i try to uninstall and reinstall, still the same...now i've tried the CS4, but still won't work. still remain the same. what's the problem...can anyone help me?it's been 4 months i tried to solve, but still got nothing. please help me...

ok, the case is, i use Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 before. i was using it doing my personal project, basically only combining .avi video. it's finished, and then i want to export it as a movie. but when it's still rendering, my laptop crushed, the screen went crazy (looked so colorful(u know what i mean?^^)), then i couldn't do anything. so i just shut it down forcefully. since then on, i can't use the PPro anymore. i've tried to reinstall, still the same. the startup screen still appear (the loading of all .prm file), but when the application come in, it directly shuts down. with no error message. i also install the PPro CS4, but still the same...is it my laptop or the PPro?

  • Help. My little friend won't start anymore.

Started him today and there were just the powerled which gave me one blink all 5 secs., no chime but the fans and hdds are on. Also no video is avail.
    What could that mean?
I pulled the ram and tested every single on in all of the four slots. Pushed the PMA/SMU button and so on.
    Nothing helps right now.

That sounds like very bad solder joints to me. I use to work in a factory that did soldering with a wave soldering machine . Thats how they get the solder on the board . It should look silver in appearance , not brown or yellow . That May as well be from the heat from the motherboard causing that . If you no someone that can use a wave solder machine on it , I bet that would solve your problem . You may get people to disagree with me on that , but I bet thats all it is . The people that repair the motherboards for apple on the internet , I bet they no this and make a **** load of money off people and only resolder the motherboard with a wave solder machine . Or re-solder the memory slots on it and back in business you are .
I not that for a fact that a weak solder joint will cause this type of problem . I you look at the fact that the computer gets hot and cold . I would say that that the problem with all of or most of the motherboard problems with apple computers . But the processors can burn up and have to that matter .Most of the problems can be solved from preventive maintenance on most of computer parts . But for most of all if you have not the skill to tackle this problem you may be best off sending it out to some one that can fix it for you . I am sure that apple will no how to fix the motherboard for little money and no's of the fix for you machine first hand . thats why they charge 3500.00 for a new mac pro . Most problems are a simple fix not know to most people If you have some electronic experience you may no what I mean by this .
