Help! Time Machine recovery freezes at 5.3%

Hi everybody. I'm in it now. I decided to reinstall Leopard since Boot Camp told me that I had to do it in order to partition my 250 GB hard drive to use with Windows XP.
Anyways. I've tried to recover several times with different Time Machine backup dates, and all of them stops at 5.3% in the recovery. I've tried to let it be, to see how long it froze, and I gave up after over an hour. At the most Time Machine told me the ETA was almost 14 hours!!
Now what am I going to do? When I backed up in OS X using Time Machine I didn't get any errors, but now it suddenly won't work backup up.
I KNEW I couldn't trust Time Machine....

This doesn't help, but I have the same problem. Not including the part about Boot Camp, partitioning my drive, or running Windows XP.
I did a clean install of Leopard and bought a brand new drive for Time Machine to play on. It seems to enjoy backing up without problem every hour.
Now that I need to recover, however, it freezes. Even pressing Cancel doesn't do anything and the only way to get out of it is to hold down the power key on the computer until it shuts down and restart.

  • After using Time Machine-Computer Freezes on startup and will not sleep.

I've narrowed down my iMac issues to Time Machine.
After I back up with Time Machine, my iMac freezes on start up ( I have to turn it off and turn it back on again for normal start up) every time I turn it on and it will not sleep.
I reset the SMC, startup in safe mode, and do all of the troubleshooting to get it back so it starts up without freezing (sometimes my troubleshooting works). I've even reinstalled SL a couple of times and that seems to have helped but...
...when I back up with Time Machine, the freezing issues and non-sleeping issue return.
I've just installed the 10.6.2 update and my iMac is now working perfectly, no freezing on start up and it sleeps.
I'm afraid to use Time Machine for fear of the problems returning.
Any ideas on why Time Machine would corrupt my system? Any thoughts on how I can remedy the situation?

    Hello m:
The preference file (plist) tells OS X what default and/or user preferences to apply to a device or a program. They rarely become corrupt, but if they do they cause all sorts of odd behavior.
After you trash the preference file and restart, OS X will rebuild the missing file with default values. If you have some personal preferences, you would need to enter those.
    Barry
P.S. The preference file I mentioned is located in Macintosh HD>library>preferences

  • Not a valid photoshop document after time machine recovery and reinstall of photoshop

After a time machine recovery most of my photoshop documents recovered fine, however there are a select few (and my most recent work unfortuantely) that seem corrupt. It isn't all of my documents. Trying to recover them again from back-up doesn't seem to be working. I did have to reinstall photoshop CS4 after the recovery.
I have seen similar questions on here but none of the solutions have worked. I've tried opening with other programs, I've tried changing the file extentions etc. If the files were just corrupt recovering them from time machine should fix the problem. Many thanks if you can assist.

…but it doesn't feel like corrupt files are the problem…
If it's only a few selected files that are misbehaving but others do open without problems, then you do have file corruption in each of those files.
Go back in time machine to the earliest possible date after each file was created and restore only that particular version of the file.
If that doesn't work, then considered the files irretrievably lost.  What kind of error message do they return when you try to open them?
In any event, it's imperative that you check the SMART status of your drive and Repair Drive (or at least Verify Drive) to check for a failing drive.
As an aside, taking a belt-and-suspender approach, it's my practice to supplement Time Machine with a clone of my working drive and daily backups of my files.  For some reason, I've had three Time Machine disks fail on three different Macs and locations in the last six months or so.
I had Time Machine disabled on all my Macs until I decided to give it one more test run on a 65-lb Mac Pro recently.  I'm not convinced one way or another yet, so all other Macs still have TM disabled for now. Time Machine is very intrusive, and the external TM drives run much, much hotter than external storage files—always a troubling sign in my book.

  • Time Machine recovery Help!

    Hi forum.
I have Time Machine setup on a MacBook Pro backing up to a Time Capsule.
Now the user has lost his iphotos and we want to get them back from the backup.
When I "enter" timemachine, I cannot navigate, it seems the interface is locked on "today". The Arrows dont work and the timeline on the right shows no other date than today.
Yet on the timecapsule, there is a sparseimage 500gb with 245GB free. Mounting the sparseimage there is a folder for the computer and a ONE SINGLE file in there called DDMMYY.inprogress . That file is 136MB big and was last modified on the 27th of November (looks good my data must be in there).
Problem: I cannot access this file. How can I access it?
If I try to copy the file to another drive it says "cannot copy the file Error -1426"
    Help!
Is there anyway to view the contents of this file directly?
    Thanks for any tips
    the wumpus
PS - sofar, Im not impressed with Time Machine. I set it all up to backup, it backs up fine for months, and when you need it it fails you. Sofar 0/10 (given Im doing things corectly...)

You mean going into the pictures folder and entering time machine?
As I said, I tried that and I cannot navigate inside timemachine at all (the arrows dont work) nor do I see any dates.
Or did you mean something else?
    Thanks

  • Time Machine Recovery - PLEASE HELP

I searched to find something close enought to solve my problem but was unable so I aplogize if this has occured before.
Last night I backed up my hard drive in preperation to erase my computer in order to partition it for boot camp and was running 10.6.xx. When trying to then recover my time machine data, it kept failing to boot afterwards and kept showing the grey screen with the power logo. The only system disk I have with me here (Iraq) is the one that came with my computer which is 10.5.xx.My 10.6 disk is at home and I have no way to get it here. I would have it mailed, but I won't get it before I demobolize.
So, what I need to know is of anyways to recover a Time Machine backup that is 10.6 with a 10.5 system disk.
Please e-mail any questions or answers to [email protected]

No, sorry, you must have a Snow Leopard disc (a borrowed disc will work, and not violate the license, but a Leopard disc just won't work).

  • Time Machine Recovery (after data recovery)

Several months ago, Disk2 and Disk3 in my 2007 MacPro 1,1 (OSX 10.7.5) became unreadable by the computer. To make matters worse, the Time Machine external backup became equally as unreadable. All at the same time! Drive 1, with the operating system, seems to be unaffected. The two unreadable drives showed up as "media" in disk utility, but didn't show up in Disk Warrior or any other similar programs (partition repairing) using the "terminal." I sent the Time Machine drive (WD Mybook Essential 3Tb) to DataRecovery.com and they found no phyical issues with the drive. There was, however,"Data Corruption in the file tables and data area" (according to the evaluation report). This was corrected and the TM drive was supposedly completely recovered.
Upon receiving the external drive (now replaced by a newer 3Tb Mybook), I replaced disk2 and disk3 with new 1TB drives (formatted with a single partition) and tried to perform a restore for these two drives. No such luck.....The drive was readable by the computer but would not actually enter into "Time Machine." I examined the actual drive and found an inordinate amount of Unix executable files, especially when going into the individual backups. The drive does show that they recovered 870Gb of information, but nothing seems to be readable much less recoverable.
I'm wondering if there is a workaround for any of this or whether I should contact the data recovery people to resolve this. I appreciate any help on this as it's become expensive and a bit deflating.......I still hold out some hope, though. Thanks. The drives were most likely corrupted by a generator that kicks on once a week (automatic maintenance) and temporarily cuts power long enough to turn the computer off...I've since gotten a UPS.

A general look at backup files......

  • Some iPhoto pictures missing after time machine recovery, were there errors reported during backup that I missed?

Hello. I used time machine/time capsule to automatically back up my sytem over the last 3 years and I used the backups to recover my system to a new hard drive when the original drive began to fail. After recovery, I noticed there are missing photos in iPhoto.
I'm curios where I should look to see why they weren't backed up, and why it wasn't obvious to me at the time that they weren't backed up.
Does time machine explicitly call out issues when it can't back up a file or does it just squirrel a message away in the system log?
I'd like to know because I'd like avoid this issue going forward.
    Full disclosure & History -
The hard drive on my late 2009 27" iMac was exhibiting issues and started to go bad. No problem I thought, I'll get a new one and recover the system from my time capsule.
The full recovery was initiated from the OS install media. Upon recovery, the system wouldn't boot. After booting from the OS install media and reinstalling the OS on top of the recovered data the system booted and seemed to retain almost everything. This may not be the best way to recover but it seemed to work.
    I additionally had to:
    repatch the OS
    reinstall iWork
relicense MS Office (otherwise office seemed to be intact)
When I started looking through my iPhoto libraries, there were some events with no pictures (mostly the newer events). I couldn't find the pictures on the time capsule either so I'm curios if there was anyway I could have known that backups weren't completing successfully. I had run a time machine incremental backup before pulling out the old hard drive and it seemed to complete successfully so I'm at a loss. I can understand that as the hard drive began to fail, there may have been issues backing up the data, but I somehow missed it if/when the problems were reported.
Should I go through the old system logs that were backed up on the time capsule and look for backupd messages/errors? Going forward, how do I know if there are backup issues?
It took me a couple weeks to realize the drive was failing. I had noticed that the system performance was getting bad, and the system would occassionally hang. It would come back OK after a restart. I thought it was because the filesystem was getting close to full (30GB left on a 1 TB drive) so I was chasing down cleaning up some data to make more room. There were suggestions in other forums to try and keep the filesystem 10% free.
While moving data from the internal drive to a new external drive (to free up space) the system would hang. I eventually found a couple disk0 errors in the kernel log and I actually witnessed disk0 disappear while running an iostat. I'm thinking it took me too long to know the disk was going bad, and so the pictures I imported over the last 3-4 weeks may be gone.
I still have the original drive so I'll see if anything else can be salvaged from it.
    Looking for some suggestions on
    1) the ability to know if time machine backups are successful and are in sync with my system
    2) the ability to know when there are hardware issues that I should be aware of
If you got to this point, thanks for taking the time to read through all this.
    Regards,
    -mike

    Hi Mike,
I just saw this post and saw no one has responded.  You might have figured out but in case, I wanted to let you know what I found out.  I had the same problem.  Hard drive failure, they installed a new one and my iPhoto pictures were missing.  I couldn't find them on Time Machine either which baffled (and frustrated) me b/c I just backed up my drive and I was missing pictures from over a year ago.
I found this article and it allowed me to at least find my pictures...so they weren't lost after all.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16029742#16029742
As for why they aren't showing up in iPhoto or Time Machine, the lady at the Mac store said it is probably an OS conflict.  Which makes sense since I can see the actual pictures in the iPhoto content file (per the article mentioned above).  However, I didn't have my computer with me at the store to have a Genius person help me resolve the conflict.
BUT, if you can find the pictures, then maybe you can reimport them into iPhoto?  Just a thought.
    Good luck!

  • Encrypted time machine backup freezes OS X

Been having fairly regular problems with Time Machine backup to a LaCie 5Big 10TB Thunderbolt drive where OS X 10.8.5 will completely freeze during a backup.
I've formatted 2 of the 5 drives as 2TB Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted) in order to perform alternate encrypted Time Machine backups. The other 3 are part of a striped 6TB logical drive. I connect the backup drives about once a week for the past few months and have encountered a freeze during backup a few times.  I currently have a situation where merely attempting to mount one of the Time Machine volumes causes OS X to freeze. Initially the mouse cursor starts to stutter as it is moved around the screen and then it completely freezes. No mouse cursor, no clock, nothing. Have left for a couple of hours and still nothing so have to reboot. There are absolutely no messages in the console for the time of the hang e.g. time of most recent hang 12:55 PM which is when I attempted to mount the drive. Most recent message before the restart 12:49:16 PM.
The thing is, sometimes the backups work fine for weeks at a time, other times I get these freezes with the same symptoms as above and the only thing that seems to work is reformatting the volume and starting again, although this can take a few attempts to work. I've run a verify disk and currently everything currently seems OK (although can't run for the backup volume as it won't mount, and I've previously had to restore the boot disk due to Disk Verify failing on the boot disk).
Has anyone got suggestions as to what could be causing this? Options are faulty LaCie 5Big, Time Machine encrypted option, OS X bugs or file corruptions.

Unfortunately the 5Big only has Thunderbolt connections and I only have the cable it came with as it is my only Thunderbolt device.
The secure erase single pass of the disk failed with the following error:
Secure Disk Erase failed with the error: Securely erasing data to prevent recovery failed.
In the console logs there was the message: Kernel: disk5s2: data underrun
I ran another erase but without the secure option and immediately got the error:
Disk Erase failed with the error:
Unable to write to the last block of the device
    and in console:
    Kernel: disk5: data underrun
Going to give it another go as I'm not sure if this is as symptom or a cause as I've recently had similar errors on the boot disk (internal SSD) and "Disk0s2 I/O error" occurring in the console. I had to restore the system from backup to resolve that particular issue.

  • Time Machine Crashes/ Freezes. It is now left behind.

I just bought an expensive, 2TB Time Capsule. It doesn't work, at least with Time Machine. There is common theme in these forums, problems with Time Machine/Time Capsule. I am scrapping Time Machine in favor of ChronoSync. I prefer native apps to 3rd party but not at the expense of my own sanity. I am usually impressed with all things apple but not here, they really missed the mark. Maybe I and everyone else who has moved on to other options will try again when it is publicly know that Apple has addressed and provided solutions for this particular issue.

I want to get this solved. I need your help to do it though.
-I have a MPB with an 500gb HD.
-My Time Capsule is the 2tb version.
-When I set up to do an initial backup it will freeze my entire Mac. The Mac will stay frozen for hours/days if I let it, and I have, but I have to do a hard restart every time. I verify the HD with Disk Utility to ensure it has no damage after each hard restart.
-No matter how large a back up I attempt it always has the same result, freezing.
-I have attempt to exclude almost the the entire disk and then excluded every other user, same result.
-I have deleted the sparsebundle on the TC, same result.
-I have renamed my MPB to a simple name, all lower case letters with no spaces; same result.
-I have tried to connect vie Ethernet and wifi, all with the same aforementioned variables; same results.
I need some help, I feel like I am missing an obvious step that an expert could easily figure out.

  • Disk Utility missing after Time Machine Recovery

My MacPro 2014 had OS 10.9.5 as its operating system and I upgraded to Yosemite, which was a disaster because all the fonts and graphics became blurry (I don't use a Retina Display monitor) which is a known bug waiting to be fixed in an update. I decided to go back to OS 10.9.5 by using Time Machine and Recovery. I recovered the old system onto one of my external hard drives and then used Super Duper to copy that back to my original Mac Pro SSD hard drive. The problem is Disk Utility is missing. It doesn't appear in Spotlight and is not in the Applications/Utility folder. I restarted in Recovery mode and Disk Utility is present there, and I used it to repair the Hard Drive. After restart, still no Disk Utility. Help!!

If you go to the Purchased section in the Mac App Store is Mavericks available for redownload?
It is for me but I also had  2009 Mac Mini that upgraded to Mavericks.

  • HELP TIME MACHINE WIPED OUT MY BOOTCAMP?

I had this 200 GB hardisk partition & it was my windows 7 partition I installed every application & game I have & also I have had homework & essays their & now time machine used it as a back up!!!! is their any way to retrieve my bootcamp partition as windows!!!!! I used iPartition but it didn't work!
    please help...

The files are very likely still there and recoverable. However, *it is very important that you do not use the drive until you recover your files* or you risk overwriting the data.
FileSalvage is a recovery tool that says it can recover files from a FAT32 formatted disk:
    http://www.subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1
You could also use a PC file recovery program but I'm not at all familiar with any of those.
You should report this incident to Apple Feedback and/or telephone them.

  • Time Machine Keeps Freezing???

Hello! My computer keeps freezing up about 10 minutes into Time Machine. I have an internal 320gb drive and I am attempting to back it up to the Maxtor OneTouch4 Mini 250gb external hard drive I was using previously to back up my PowerBook G4. Also is it possible to keep my G4 files on there and use it to back up my MacBook with Time Machine?

Hard to tell exactly what's going on here.
What's now on your external? TM backups from your G4? How is it formatted? How many partitions, and of what type?
Regardless, you do need to know that your backup drive is too small, unless most of your internal HD is free. Even if you erase your 250 gb external.
The "rule of thumb" is, TM needs 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up. This is for one copy of everything on your HD, plus copies of many previous versions of changed files, plus some workspace.
In reality, though, it depends mostly on how you use your Mac. If you frequently update many large files, even 3 times may not be enough. But if you mostly change only small files, and not continually, 1.5 might be enough.
All that said, TM should send you a message if it doesn't have enough room.
If this happened the first time you tried to back up, here's an article that might help: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550?viewlocale=en_US
Otherwise, you might want to download the Time Machine Buddy widget. It will show TM's messages from one backup run at a time in a small window. You may have to refresh it, but it ought to indicate what's going on, at least until the freeze. Copy them (be sure to get them all, as sometimes they overflow the window) and post here.

  • ML Server: Time Machine   Spotlight = freeze???

    Hi there!
I encountered a pretty annoying issue:
running a fresh/clean installed OS X ML Server (Mac Mini i7, 16GB RAM), imported OD, FileShared, Collaboration (Wiki, Calendars, Addresses, etc.) from an older Mac Mini SL Server, configured Time Machine for full backups (no excludes except of removable drives/media)...
It happens pretty often, that Time Machine is backing up the server (FileShares are pretty big) and consumes up to 90% CPU... AND IN THAT TIME mds and md_woker are starting to do some tasks and are also consuming 90>100% CPU... After some minutes, the while system is inaccessible... neither remote (ScreenSharing) nor directly on the system (screen and keyboard).
All I can do then is force power off the system and boot it again.
The mentioned combination appears up to 5 times a day... this is really annoying due to tha fact that we attached some external (Linux-) Servers to the OD and when the ML Server freezes, some applications can not be used .....
    What i already tried:
    - clean re-install the server and re-importing the data (no migation, no migration-assistant, copy and paste the data from SL to ML machines)
    - disable Spotlight (added the full disk to the provacy tab, mdutil -a -i off)
    - clean install to another server (2nd Mac Mini i7, 16GB RAM)
    But the issue still exists....
I write a small bash script which restarts the server every morning, but the result is still not propely working.... sometimes it is enough to restart the sever once.. sometime i need to restart it up to 5 times a day.
    Any hint, tip, solution?
And it is NO SOLUTION to DISABLE the BACKUP
    Regards,

    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, this step must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -F bsd -k Sender mdworker -o -k Sender mds | grep -v Norm | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; $5=""};1' | pbcopy
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produced no output, the Clipboard will be empty. Paste into a reply to this message.
The Terminal window doesn't show the output. Please don't copy anything from there.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.
    Step 2
Enter the following command as in Step 1 and post the output:
    mdutil -as 2>&- | pbcopy
    You can then quit Terminal.
    Step 3
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Terminal. In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for crash reports related to Spotlight. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. A Spotlight crash report has a name beginning in "mds" or "mdworker" and ending in ".crash". Select the most recent such report, if any, from the System and User subcategories and post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post any other kind of diagnostic report, such as hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • My time machine keeps freezing when I am backing up

I have recently purchased a seagate 1.5TB external hard drive and am trying to back up my computer using time machine.
    My compute is 56GB large.
I have tried 3 times and have been forced to stop it everytime because it keeps freezing.
    What should I do?
It says it is compaitble with USB 2.0 and 3.0
My MBP is from late 2011 and I think it is 3.0 yet when it does backup a bit it doesnt do it particularly fast then it pauses.

If you have a late 2011 MBP, then you have USB 2.0 ports. Only the mid-2012 models came with USB 3.0 ports. Is your Seagate a USB 3.0 model? It should be backward compatible with your machine; you just won't acheive USB 3.0 speeds. How did you format your drive? To use with Time Machine, it must be formated as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
I'm suspecting (and rather hoping) that it's just a formatting problem. Try using Disk Utility to reformat the drive as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in order to work with TM.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Time Machine Recovery Fails at ~85%

I have a mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro running Mavericks, and a new 2 TB Time Capsule. I'm trying to install a new internal SSD to replace the four-year old one it came with. I swapped the new SSD in with no trouble, and booted my computer into Internet Recovery. I selected the option to rebuild my machine based on a Time Machine backup, and it churns away for a while until it hits about 85% installed, and then it reboots (and fails to startup properly, giing me a spinner on the gray apple screen).
The new SSD is twice the size of the old one. I've put it in an external enclosure and mounted it, ran disk utility on it to make sure that it's working properly. I can't think what else to do, and I can't imagine why it fails at the same point in the rebuild every time!
Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

It sounds like you're booting from internet recovery and then running time machine restore.  You should try internet recovery followed by install, when setup assistant runs then point that to your time machine backup.  I'm not a huge fan of wifi based restores.  Good luck.
