Help to reinstall OS X

Hi folk.
I'm about to do an erase and reinstall of Mavericks on my iMac, it having been corrupted by some third party apps like MacKeeper and so on. I've previously received some very helpful tips here from people like John Gait, and I've read the suggested material. But there are a couple of things I'm unsure about. I'd be so grateful if someone could read over what I've done and am planning to do, and what I'm not sure about, and give me some advice to keep me on the right course.
I don't have an external hard drive. Well I do, but it's used with my Macbook and I don't want to have two systems on this one disk; I guess it would make things complicated. And I don't have the cash right now to fork out for another one! As backup for my iMac, I have previously used iBackup or I have duplicated vital material onto the Macbook.
The iMac is running really slow, the spinning wheel a common occurrence, despite having stacks of space on the hard drive, and despite having deleted (manually, using EasyFinder, per John's advice) virtually all third party apps. I have copied important files – documents, the iTunes library, and iPhoto pics (as .jpg files in folders, since the library was too large to transfer on my 8GB stick – and transferred them to my Macbook. The Macbook is now groaning under the load, so I will do a Time Machine backup and then delete some larger files which I will restore later when I need them.
What I want is a clean start on the iMac. I'm planning to do an erase and reinstall. But it suddenly occurred to me that when I erase the disk, I no longer have access to the App Store (since I don't have an OS anymore) and can't reinstall Mavericks. Am I confused? In other words, once I erase the startup disk (Macintosh HD) I have nothing. What will happen?
Thanks, from a rookie!

Your profile shows OS X 10.5.....is that really correct?
If you are running a later version of OS X (Mavericks, for example), you would reinstall OS X like this:
OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
However, I would NEVER do anything like that before I had a good backup.

  • Help to reinstall OS X afetar hard drive replacement

    Hello.
I have a Mac book pro 17" model A1297. I have no recovery media, and his hard drive is bad. Several times it doesn't startup properly.
I have a brand new 500gb HDD, and I can replace the original HDD.
I need help to reinstall OS X, because as said, I have no DVD or pen drive with OS X instalator.
    thank you so much.

Your original OS X version was 10.5.6. You need to do one of two things:
Contact Apple and order replacement DVDs for your model, if they have them available.
Purchase the Snow Leopard DVD so you can install it on the computer.
    For replacements:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes
    international calling numbers..
    For the Snow Leopard DVD:
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
Once  you receive the required discs you will need to prepare the new hard drive then install OS X:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard or Tiger Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
For Snow Leopard or Tiger you should open Software Update in order to install any additional required updates.

  • Help w/ Reinstalling Windows XP from Recovery Disk No. DVD Kit 361935-001

Re: HP Operating System DVD - Windows XP Pro. SP2 - HP or Compaq PC. No. DVD Kit 361935-001
Can I reinstall Windows XP on an HP computer using the COA received with the computer?
I read the following online and not sure what it means:
"It may not work with an OEM product key code. You would need to either sip stream SP3 or find a XP OEM version that does not come with service pack 2 installed... For some reason the OEM codes don't work with SP2 OEM disks. MSCE, MCP, A+, Network+, Security+, CEH, CCNA Just thought this might be a tid bit of information that might help those of you that need to restore windows and are using the most common OEM product key code located on the COA (Certificate of Authentication) on your computer...The only exception is if it specifically says service pack 2 on your COA."
    Thank for your help!

    Hi:
    Me either.
Your product key should work, but you shouldn't even need it when you use a recovery disk made for your PC.

  • Hard Drive died and Apple replaced. Please help me reinstall.

My hard drive failed in my G5, and it was replaced by Apple under the Protection Plan. I was running 10.4.4 at the time, but Apple has installed 10.3 on the new disk. I just picked up my G5 from the Apple store and need some help.
I have a cloned backup that's (unfortunately) a year old on an external drive. I was doing nightly backups of my mail, safari settings and a folder to the same external drive with Backup using incremental backups. So the year old clone doesn't have all the files that have been updated since it was made.
I'm confused about how to get back up and running. Do I update the OS on the new drive first by reinstalling Tiger, updating to 10.4.7 and then start dragging things from the clone? Or should I copy my user folder from the clone and then drag newer files in? Or should I just clone the clone back to the new drive?
I rreally need to get up and running so I can begin to recreate the year's worth of illustrator files that I lost ...I've learned a BIG lesson here and will put into place a proper backup system as soon as possible.
I sure would appreciate any help.
    Ellen
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   PowerBook G4 12"

Install Tiger and then download and run the updaters to get you all back to 10.4.7, etc. From here, I'd drag user data from the outdated clone to the new drive. Be careful about copying the library folder. You probably don't want to overwrite anything that's already there - you'll be replacing a newer file with an older one. But I'd go ahead and copy the contentsof each folder inside the personal drive of the cloned to the new one. By that, I mean, don't copy the Documents folder - copy the contents of the documents folder to the new documents folder.
Since your clone is really outdated you may be better off installing your applications rather than copying them - especially since some aren't likely to appreciate being copied. At least having already copied your preferences, many of the programs will already be serialized.

  • Need help on reinstaling OS X on my Macbook Pro after formating it!

Hey! I hope someone can finaly help me with my mac problem. I have a macbook pro that I think might be from 2011. Well the thing is that I have formated my macbok and when I got to the os x utilities screen I went for the option to reinstall OS X, everything was going fine until it asked me to introduce my apple id and password. I did it and what happened next was that I got this message: "This item is temporarily unavailable. Try again later". So now i´m stuck at this point, i can´t reinstall any os x. I´m guessing the problem with mountain lion is that it´s an old version of os x that isn´t available anymore for free downloads. So what shoud I do?
I´ve been reserching on internet for any possible solutions and nothing. I just came upon that many mac users have had this problem and some found the solution but doesn´t share it with the rest. Right now im living in peru therefor I cant go to an apple store to get my problem fixed.
Can some please help me? I´m really despreate!!

"This item is temporarily unavailable. Try again later"
That message can also be read as "Mac OS X in not available to the Apple-ID you provided".
You need to provide the original Apple-ID that was used to register that Mac, or an Apple-ID that was used to purchase (even for $0) some later version of Mac OS X.

  • Help with Reinstalling CS4

After not using CS4 for a few years, I tried to launch Photoshop and Dreamweaver on 10.9.2 but wasn't able to get them running.
I downloaded the CS4 installer and was hoping to "repair" the installations but, when I run the installer, the checkboxes next to those apps are disabled.
What's the best approach to being able to use my apps again - do I uninstall them and then run the installer or is there a way to get the standard installer to let me "repair" the current installs?
    Thanks much,

Can you at least launch the application even if you can't do anything before it crashes?  If you can then you need to deactivate the product first before uninstalling and reinstalling it.  To deactivate it go to:
    HELP >> DEACTIVATE
If you can't launch the application at all then when you uninstall the product, make sure you remain online so that uninstaller will prompt you to deactivate it and this is all automatic.
Once you have done this, you can use Adobe Cleaner tool to remove it completely from the system:
    <http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/cs5-cleaner-tool-installation-problems.html>
    Hope this helps.

    Hey browneyedgirl76!
When you uninstall and reinstall iTunes, there is a specific order of component uninstallation that has to take place. If this order is not followed, issues such as the one you are seeing can occur. Try uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it again, by using this article for guidance:

  • Help with reinstalling Adobe Creative Suite 6 Master Collection

About a year or so ago, I purchased and installed the Adobe Creative Suite 6 Master Collection on my 1TB external hard drive (since that hard drive was bigger). Unfortunately, the hard drive just died, which means that all the programs in the suite are gone. I'm now trying to reinstall the suite internally on my computer, but it isn't letting me pick the directory. Everything else is fine; the serial number works, my account is working and there aren't any errors. But when I reach the 'options' page, I'm stuck. I check the option to install all the programs, I pick the language, but where it says the directory, it still has the directory of my old hard drive. I've tried unplugging the external hard drive (just in case it was still reading it), but it still has the directory chosen, and there isn't any button to let me browse and change it to another hard drive. I tried installing it anyway to see what would happen, but the install fails and stops. I even tried to copy and paste the new directory into the space, but still nothing. Can anyone help? Also, I went to Control Panel to see if the files were still there, but they weren't.

Thank you so much! I ran the cleaner, and it's given me the option to change BUT now, it gives me this when I pick the new directory. Any suggestions?

  • Please help me reinstall CS5. I have contacted Adobe repeatedly. Noone wants to help, 4 books going to press Friday

After Indesign crashing repeatedly for 2 hours due to a recovered file (I saved as, I exported, I imported the pages into a new document) I decided to reinstall my version of creative suite 5. The problem is that my serial number is an update. My original version from CS is 2. I am not given the opportunity to insert the original serial number on installation, so Adobe does not recognise my update serial number as a functioning version of the program.
I have spent 3 disappointing hours (and thousands of euros on the original versions of the Adobe creative suite - because I thought that paying gave me technical support) and Adobe say that this forum is my only remedy for both a fix and advice. PLEASE HELP.

Moving this discussion to the Downloading, Installing, Setting Up forum.
