  • What will I do with the SQL Server (2012/2014) (Standard/Enterprise) Licenses?

What will I do with the SQL Server (2012/2014) (Standard/Enterprise) Licenses?
Are these the same as software product keys, or just some pieces of paper the company needs to have on hand?
In which case, when we install SQL Server 2014, (and when looked for videos) - there is only 1 product key value to be put in, is there some other screen in the setup to input the License bought ( in our case will be Core licenses).
So in addition to the Core Licenses do will a Product key be needed? Would product key from an msdn work, as it is the licenses that we will buy to indicate that we bought to run the software on server X?
    Thanks for any indications.

I will answer your question point wise
    1. Keeping license key is good idea it helps you during audit and you have proof that you are using a valid Microsoft License. Plus in scenario of disaster where whole box gets damanged you might need to install SQL Server again in that case during
reinstallation on setup page where you need to enter key you might need need it. If you are missing your paper then you are in trouble.
    2. Only on product key page license key is required and it is not required anywhere else during installation. Unless you enter valid product key installation will not proceed further.
3 License makes you a valid owner of Microsoft product with restrictions on how much hardware resource you can use how much max connections you can make etc. Key lets you install it on Windows machine making sure that you are using valid Microsoft product.
This was just a general idea please speak to your licensing specialist for more details. This is technical forum and we generally ask user to speak to licensing expert for such queries.

  • Does the SQL Server 2012 Express Advance include the Business Intelligence tools?

I wondered if those tools are included. If so, what's the difference between the express and full version? I only need this for educational purposes.

    Hello,
SQL Server Express with Advanced Services 2005-2008R2 comes along with BIDS = "Business Intelligence Developer Studio", but only for SSRS = Reporting Services; SSAS & SSIS is not suported in this edition.
For SQL Server 2012 the new SSDT = SQL Server Data Tools are used to create reports, you can get them here as a separate download:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/data/tools.aspx
And there are also several limitation for SSRS Express, see

    Cumulative update information
    SQL Server 2012
The fix for this issue was first released in Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2012. For more information about how to obtain this
cumulative update package for SQL Server, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
2679368 Cumulative update 1 for SQL Server 2012
For a stand-alone installation, follow these steps:
Download the cumulative update from the Microsoft website, and install the downloaded update package in a folder that can be accessed by the server.
Double-click the icon to run the Self-Extractor wizard. Extract the files to a folder on the server or on a UNC share.
On the server, open an administrative command prompt, and change directory to the folder that contains the RTM SQL Server 2012 setup media. For example, run the following command:
    cd E:\SQLSetup\
Run Setup.exe from the command line together with the /updatesource switch to direct the setup to the folder or share that was described in step 2. For example, run the following command:
    setup.exe /action=install /updatesource=C:\SQL2012CU
The setup process will detect the cumulative update. After you accept the licensing agreement, on the Product Updates page in the setup process, select the "Include SQL Server product updates" check box to apply
the cumulative update fixes to the RTM setup files.
    check and confirm.

  • Some of the SQL Server 2012 are not getting monitored in SCOM 2012 SP1.( basics monitoring is happening, expect SQL role)

Found that all the SQL servers are getting monitored, expect few servers which are having SQL server 2012 role.
proxy is enabled for these servers, when I checked discovered inventory for SQL 2012 database unable to find these servers in that list.
and other servers having SQL Server 2012 monitoring properly issue is with only few servers.

    Hi,
thanks for the all the input, we are using service account as windows account instead of action account !!
will that also affect discovery of SQL role?
and also found that there are many alerts in SCOM console, with alert description :
SQL Server cannot authenticate using Kerberos because the Service Principal Name
(SPN) is missing, misplaced, or duplicated.
please let me know how we can resolve this issue, will it affect SQL discovery as well ?

  • Need help in writting the sql

    The sql
    select 'alter system kill session '||sid||','||serial#||';' from v$session where username= 'EV05';
give the output in the below given form
    alter system kill session 69,38769;
But i need the output to be
    alter system kill session '69,38769';
Can some one re-writes the sql select statment,
    Thanks
    Naveen

    Naveen,
This isn't the forum for help with writing SQL - rather with using the SQL Developer product. In future, I would suggest that you use the SQL and PL/SQL forum for these sorts of questions.
However, to answer your question this time, you can include a ' in a string by having two together ie 'fred''s' will return the string fred's.
The following SQL will give you the result you want:
    select 'alter system kill session '''||sid||','||serial#||''';' from v$session where username= 'EV05';

  • SQL Server 2012 Cumulative update package 2 (CU2) for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2 - why only for x86 ?

    Hey guys...
Im a little bit confused... i wanted to download the newest hotfixes for SQL server 2012...
    But the download for :
2983175 Cumulative update package 2 (CU2) for SQL Server 2012 Service Pack
is only for the platform: x86 available ... but my SQL server 2012 is running in a x64 environment...
(when i checked the older cumulative updates... they're all only for x86.. can someone tell me why ? )
    thanks and regards,
    Dominic

There doesn't exist an SQL Express "Standard". It's two different editions.
For Express there are three 32bit/64bit editions:
Express, Express with Tools and Express with Advanced Services.
Express with Tools is essentially Express with Management Studio Tools, Express with Advanced Services adds also BI (Business Intelligence) + Reporting Services.
As for where you can apply the cumulative update, on the link you can see this:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Service Pack 2, when used with:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Developer
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Enterprise
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express

  • Upgrade the Edition for SQL Server 2012

    Hi All,
After spending 3hrs on the phone to MS in India I'm trying here as a last resort!
I'm trying to upgarde my SQL server 2012 Developer version from Evaluation to a full copy. I've been told that my Product key (Note I do not have a Product ID) is legit from the front line support.
However when I run hte SQL Server Installation Center (as an Administrator) I go to the following:
    Maintenance
    Edition upgrade
    Pass first validation
Then enter in the Product Key and I get the following back in SQL:
"There are validation errors on this page. Click OK to Close this dialog box. Review Errors at the bottom of the setup page, then provide valid parameters or click help for more information".
I can only click on OK and then I'm left with either Next (same thing happens) or Cancel (which halts the full installation) finally help (which is useless).
Any help and ideas greatly appreciated!!!
    Gavin

    Hello,
Make sure the product language of the SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition is the same of the Evaluation Edition you have
installed. If they have different product language, you may receive the "There are validation errors on this page" error message.
For more information, please read the following resource:

    Hope this helps.

  • Please ... tell me how to download and instale the setup for the SQL Server Express 2012

My OS is 32-bit and i have already downloaded the SQL Server 2012 Express but i cant find the SQL Server Management studio  so please tell me how can i get it?

    Hello Muhammad,
if you already install SQL server, to run the Managment Studio you can click Start and Run, and type "SSMS".
Of course you can create a shortcut and look for the file (this is the installation location you selected during the installation process) using the Windows search (pressing F3 activates the search).

  • How do I load an SSIS package created in Visual Studio 2012 Shell (Integrated) onto SQL Server 2012 using SQL Management Studio 2012

I am fairly new to this whole process of working with the Microsoft development environment.  Here is what I have to work with:
an NT server running Microsoft SQL 2012  - Microsoft SQL Server Standard (64-bit)  11.0.2100.60
and on my laptop (all freebie downloads):
SQL Server Management Studio 2012            ver 11.0.2100.60
Visual Studio 2012 Express  for Desktop Development and
    Visual Studio 2012 Shell (Integrated)
I was able to create an SSIS package in
2012 Shell (Integrated).  It takes a flat file and imports it into an SQL database table.  It runs successfully from within the
    2012 Shell (Integrated) envrionment.
But I am having trouble figuring out how to set this up on the 2012 SQL Server.  I see that one of my colleagues created an Integration Services Catalog,
and using SQL Management Studio I was able to create a folder under that called DigLic.  But when I go to the Projects subfolder of DigLic and attempt to import my SSIS package, I get an error message:
"To launch the Integration Services Deployment wizard, one of the components: Integration Services, Management Tools - Basic or Business Intelligence Development Studio has to be installed by the SQL Server
2012 Standard, Enterprise, Developer, or Evaluation Edition.  To install a component, run SQL Server Setup and Select the component name"
I realize that Express Versions of Visual Studio lack the full feature set of a professional version.  But am I wrong in assuming that owning a server version of SQL Server 2012 gives us license to a professional
version of SQL Management Studio 2012?  If so, how would I go about getting this software component installed?  And I am not clear if this is something that needs to be installed on our SQL Server or if I simply need a professional version of SSMS
    loaded on my laptop.
I work for a company that is fairly fractured in its repsonsibilities, so I would need to know exactly what to ask for if I need to track down any licenses that I might need and if I need to have any specific software installed on our SQL server or on my
    laptop.
All helpt would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Arthur,
Thank you for your reply.  But at this point, one of my points of confusion is what software I have available to me.  I wish I had a useful central help desk to call up and just say, "Hey, load me up with all of the professional version(s) of Visual
Studio.  But I do not know what we have license to.  And I kind of need to know what the options are, so that I can ask a specific question of our vast buracracy.
For now, I have downloaded only free versions of Visual Studio client software.  Since my company does have servers running Microsoft SQL Server, I am going to assume that we have proper licensing for those servers.  But does that server license
allow me to get any professional versions of the PC client software for the various Visual Studio(s) 2012?
And if I get a professional version of Visual Studio 2012, does that do away with the three different flavors that I have right now?  I have 2012 versions of SQL Server Management Studio, Visual Studio Express, and Visual Studio Shell (Integrated).
    Your feedback is much appreciated.
    Thanks!

  • Finalizing SQL Server 2012 SP2 update

    Hi,
I just successfully upgraded SQL Server 2012 Developer Edition from SP1 CU8 to SP2.

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express LocalDB                          11.2.5058.0
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL ScriptDom              11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL Compiler Service    11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client                                11.2.5058.0
            Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Policies
    11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Setup (English)                            11.2.5058.0
Microsoft VSS Writer for SQL Server 2012                              11.2.5058.0
Microsoft System CLR Types for SQL Server 2012                  11.2.5058.0
SQL Server Browser for SQL Server 2012                               11.2.5058.0
Version changed only after installing corresponding Features Pack component:
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 T-SQL Language Service              11.2.5058.0
SQL Server Report Builder 3 for SQL Server 2012                  11.2.5058.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Management Objects                   11.2.5058.0
          Version did not change:
Microsoft SQL Server System CLR Types                                10.51.2500.0
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Data-Tier App Framework            11.1.2902.0
    My questions:
    1. Am I missing any components update or is my actual SP2 setup OK?
    2. Even if I tried to install DACFramework SP2 Feature pack by running corresponding installer, it told me that I had an higher version...  Does any of you have a different version number for this component?
    3. I actually have SSDT for VS2010 installed.  The corresponding versions I actually have are the following:
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools 2010
    10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - enu
    10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools Build Utilities - enu             10.3.31009.2
Should I consider upgrading any component so they work with SQL 2012 SP2 properly?  If so, could someone provide me the corresponding download/webpage links?
    4. Finally, should I upgrade to CU2 which is actually available. Among other problems, I notice that it should fix an index rebuild problem.  Any other major issues it targets?  Is there any easy way I can test if I should install this update or
    not?
    Thanks for helping.

    Hi again,
I knew I was at SP2 level now.  My request is more about the Features Pack components as well as the CU2 which is actually out:
1- Features Pack components that I couldn't update:
Microsoft SQL Server System CLR Types                                10.51.2500.0
    --> presume was for VS2008
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Data-Tier App Framework            11.1.2902.0       --> is this the real last version?
2- SQL Server Data Tools vs Visual Studio 2010 SP1 + SQL Server 2012 SP2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools 2010
    10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools - enu
    10.3.31009.2
Microsoft SQL Server Data Tools Build Utilities - enu             10.3.31009.2
Do I have the last versions possible (VS2010) or should I update something?
    3- SQL Server 2012 SP2 CU2
What simple test can I do in order to verify if I really need to install this patch or not?
    Thanks for helping!

  • Uninstall SQL Server 2012 in Command Prompt

I need to make an  uninstall script for SQL Server 2012 Express but I can't figger it out.
After I uninstalled the SQL instance with following command:
    C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\SQLServer2012\setup.exe /Action=Uninstall /FEATURES=SQL,AS /INSTANCENAME=SQLEXPRESS /QUIETSIMPLE
There are still a couple of programs that I want to remove:
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Setup Support Files
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Transact-SQL ScriptDom
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Native Client
SQL Server Browser for SQL Server 2012
Microsoft VSS Writer for SQL Server 2012
Microsoft - SQL Server 2012 Express
Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Setup (English)
Can someone please help me removing them without using 'Add or Remove Programs'
    and preferably without any interaction.

    Hi Michael1105,
Are there any other instances except SQL Server Express in your system?
To completely uninstall SQL Server Express include the Browser, Writer and other SQL Server components, I recommend you use the
ConfigurationFile.ini file. Below is an example for you.
Firstly, you can perform the following steps to generate a configuration file.
    1. Right click SQL Server 2012 from control panel and select Remove
    2. Follow the wizard through to the Ready to Remove page. The path to the configuration file is specified in the
Ready to Remove page in the configuration file path section.
    3. Cancel the setup without actually completing the uninstallation, to generate the INI file.
Secondly, you can specify the configuration file at the command prompt and uninstall SQL Server 2012 Express, or you can change the scripts in configuration file to meet your requirement, then copy the scripts
in command prompt to uninstall SQL Server 2012 Express.

  • Restrictions on Installing SSMS and SSDT (SQL Server 2012) on multiple clients

Our company has a license for SQL Server 2012 (either Standard or Enterprise, I'm not sure which).  We need to set up several client machines to manage the server and want to install SSMS on those machines.  In addition, a couple users need
to be able to edit SSIS packages using SSDT.
My question.  Using the SQL Server 2012 license we own, are we free to install SSMS, Books Online, and SSDT on any computer in our company, without any additional cost?  We won't be installing any other SQL Server component on those machines.
If someone can post a link to the Microsoft web site that verifies that, I would appreciate it.

    Hi,
According ‘Licensing SQL Server 2012 Components’ section in Microsoft
    SQL
    Server 2012 Licensing Guide:
Management tools and other software identified as additional or supplemental software—such as product documentation, client connectivity tools, software add-ins, and SDKs—can generally be distributed and run on any number of devices for use with a licensed
instance of SQL Server software. Refer to the Volume Licensing PUR for a list of additional software components provided with SQL Server 2012.
    Hope the information helps.
