Help transferring files from Powerbook to new Vista?

Hey guys. I'm pulling my hair out here and hope someone can help me. I just got a new HP tower with Vista on it, and all my files are still on my powerbook. I've tried everything to transfer them over, but to no avail. Would appreciate any help. Here's what I've tried:
1) Netgear hub
2) Crossover cable directly linking the two computers
3) Firewire directly linking the two computers, and
4) I have a lacie external hard drive that I've used for years with the mac. I plug it in to the new computer and it doesn't show up on the list of drives (although it does show up in the device manager...strange).
Again, desperate for help here. Cant thank you enough.

Another option
MacDrive will allow you to read Mac formatted disks on a Windows PC - don't know if it is Vista compatible though.
A PowerBook in Firewire Target Disk Mode and/or the drive could then be connected to the HP PC and the PC will be able to read the drive/PB.

  • Help transferring files from old Mac 10.3.9 to new Mac 10.6.1

Hi - I just bought a new iMac with Snow Leopard and I am trying to transfer my old files from my iMac running 10.3.9. I connected a FireWire cable between the two and restarted the old iMac while holding down the "t" key, using Migration Assistant on the new iMac. Migration Assistant kept saying that it was waiting for the old iMac to restart, even though the old one HAD restarted. I looked on the forums and saw that I should try to run Setup Assistant from the Utilities folder on the old iMac. But there isn't a Setup Assistant in the Utilities folder.
So I am at an impasse. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Some of the items I've found via searching suggest to avoid transfer or migration of older
files from the ancient 10.3 over to the newer 10.5 or 10.6. And when the old computer is
a PowerPC, the new Intel-based Mac may not see or be able to use some of the items.
The older Setup Assistant is supposed to do for Panther 10.3 what the newer Migration
Assistant does for Tiger 10.4; to an extent. The results from the older system are limited.
There is a way to have the new computer import some of the older computer's user files
and account info into it, before its first run; but with a leap so great between 10.3 & 10.6,
    the results overall won't be as satisfactory as just running the new computer totally new;
going through the setup and upgrade processes independent of the old Mac altogether.
The Apple Support- Snow Leopard page should have some upgrade and migration help
info on there which may be helpful: http://www.apple.com/support/snowleopard/
It would appear that the instructions for migrating from an older Mac to one running 10.5
or 10.6 apply to the older computer, so the Panther software may be secondary if it really
matters at all in this process. See this document, and wonder along with me... This is not
quite the same as a migration assistant; but you don't need FW Target Disk in either case.

    The older method may not apply in the path you've chosen, outlined here, below;

In the past, I've done a bit of upgrade and some migration action and found that overall,
the new OS X seemed to work a lot better with nothing old involved. That's just me!
And I'm sure each individual's mileage may vary...
    Good luck & happy computing!

I have a Dell running Windows XP and need help transfering the files from the dell to the mac.
Also I have no idea what OP system I have, how do you tell which one you have???

Go to the blue Apple menu and scroll down to "About this Mac"
In the summary window that opens you will find the following information:
Mac OS X version (assuming you are running OS X)
    Processor speed.
    Memory
    Startup disk
The More Info button will take you to an in-depth overview of hardware, network set-up and installed software.
As far as transference is concerned, you can either transfer files via CD, DVD, external hard drive... or by networking the two computers.

I would like to transfer the files on my ipod to my new itunes, but i do not know how. I have heard about third-party resources that i can use to transfer these files, but i would prefer to not use any of these because i do not want to get a virus or let in spyware. If a third-party resource is the only way i can access the files on my iPod nano, then i would like it if you could suggest a safe, virus and spyware free resource. Can you help me? Hello, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Below you will find articles to assist you today
Step 1: Download and install iTunes on Vista. Please keep in mind Vista has 2 possible versions depending if you are running 32 bit or 64 bit of Vista. You can find this out by right click on Computer and selecting properties.
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ (32 bit)
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/iTunes8_0_2_for_Windows_64bit (64 bit)
    Step 2: Authorize new computer

Step 3: Transfer iTunes purchases from iPod into iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
Keep in mind if you have any content not from the iTunes Store on the iPod it can not be transfered back via this method. You will need to reimport the files from their original source back into iTunes.

  • Transferring files from PowerBook G4 to MacBook Pro via Firewire

Just got my new MacBook Pro Yesterday! Yay! I was about to transfer my files from old computer when I found, hmm...that firewire port looks different! Went to office max and bought a new firewire cable that looked like it should work, but it didn't. When I checked the apple website there were about 5 different firewire cables. Which one do I need? I run my offices website from my old computer, which no longer has a working monitor (thanks to my 8 month old german shepherd). So until I get my files transferred, I can't update my site! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Needed some help transferring files from Mac to external hard drive

Hey guys, I just needed some urgent help.
My friend wanted some files to be transferred to his external hard drive from my Mac. As he is a Windows user, I guess his hard drive is formatted for Windows as well. As I plug in the hard disk in my Mac, I can't transfer the files. It says something like "the disk cannot be modified".
So, please help me on how can I transfer this files from my Mac and if I do format it to work with the Mac, will it work for Windows later?
    Please help!
    Cheers
    Sam

The Windows drive is probably formatted NTFS which is not natively writable
by the Mac. It should be formatted as FAT32 to be usable on both.

  • Transferring files from iPad to new Macbook pro

My last computer broke so I invested in a Macbook pro. I have an iPad and I want to transfer files from the iPad to the Macbook, How do I do this?

There are a number of ways to do it and some of that depends on the type of files that you want to transfer.
You can email files from with the app in which they were created on the iPad. The app should have some sort of action icon at the top of the screen - or a share button - from which you can initiate the email. You can use DropBox or another cloud service. You can also use iOS file sharing with iTunes if you have an app on the iPad that supports file sharing.

So what type of files are you trying to transfer to the Mac?

  • Transferring files from OS9 to new iMac with OSX

    Hi,
I'm one of the (very) slow ones to upgrade. Just got my new iMac G5, and want to move my data and files over from my iMac G3 400 hrz graphite. I've got an ethernet network set up, but looking thru various instructions, I'm told that OS 10.4 won't allow transfers using Appletalk and I think it's telling me I need to go thru tcp/ip. I"m not finding any info that tells me how to do this. Anyone have the know-how, or can point me to find it?
    Thanks, I hope---

I do have the original Graphite, then.
Thanks for all the responses! I did do the transfer with a Firewire, and all is well (after freezing the G5 screen into a gray-chroma vertical line pattern--must have moved a corrupted file into it. Necessitated a nice little talk with India tech and several passes with Disk Doctor on the G3, but I think it's sorted out now. Just the usual New Computer Cakewalk.
    Appreciate the help!

  • Help transfering files from IMovie to NAS (Synology)

    Hi,
Hopefully someone here can help me, I am interested to move my IMovie events to my Synology NAS, I am not interested in using the NAS as a server for IMovie, I plan to view these videos independently of my Mac.
Initially I have copied the files over manually however when I attempt to play the movies though the NAS I get sound and no picture. I understand this is to do with the AIC codec which my Synology (DS214) cannot transcode code.
Is anyone aware of a way I can move these files in bulk whilst transcoding them to a compatible codec?
    Thanks for your help.

    Hello Elogeez,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
I'm not sure what version of iMovie you are working with, but I have found articles referring to the moving of iMovie content with the current version, and iMovie '11.  There is no need for any transcoding necessary, as the files are to only be referenced by the iMovie application, and not to be opened from Finder.
iMovie '11: Copy or move a project to an external hard disk
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph2289
iMovie (2013): Work with multiple libraries
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14745
If you are using iMovie '08, follow these instructions:

  • Need help transferring files from my canon vixia hg21 to final cut express!

I can't seem to get my camera or its files to show up on the FCE log and transfer window. If anyone knows of a way to get this to work i would greatly appreciate it!!!. also, I have already tried converting files to get them to be an agreeable format for FCE but the end result is always low quality.

    HI -
Log and Transfer only works with HD material, so make sure you shot in the HD mode.
Also, some times if there are multiple file formats on the same camera storage, like HD clips, SD clips and still images, this can prevent Log and Transfer from working properly. If that is the case, see if you can off load and delete all the non-HD material from the camera storage so that only HD material is there.
    Then:
    Open FCE.
Open the Log and Transfer window.
Click on the little gear shaped icon towards the upper middle of the L&T window
    !http://www.spotsbeforeyoureyes.com/L%26TPrefs.jpg!
Select Preferences from the drop down menu.
When the preference window opens, set the AVCHD Plug-In audio format to Plain Stereo.
Close Log and Transfer and close FCE.
Now connect your camera via USB with the camera on, open FCE and then open Log and Transfer and see if the window populates with clips.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help transferring music from iTunes to new MacBook Pro

    Hi there,
I am almost all set up with my new laptop. One last hitch; I can't seem to transfer my music over. I tried to put my library (about 6G) of music from my old (PC) laptop onto my iPhone and then figured I could just upload it from the iPhone to the MacBook but I when I try to sync it doesn't seem to want to work. I am getting a message that leads me to believe that when I try to sync the iPhone to the MacBook I will lose my iTunes library. Has anyone tried this? Is there an easier way to move the music files over?
    Thanks!!

  • Transferring files from iMac to new MacBook

I have an iMac running Tiger and I would like to transfer some, but not all, of my files and apps to my new MacBook 13". I have tried to use the Migration assistant, but it runs for a couple of hours and then says all of my documents can't be migrated and I am unable to continue. I was trying this over my wireless network. It was also going to take 14 hours.
Is there a method in which I can choose what I want to copy to my MacBook

    Welcome!
You can connect the two computers directly with a piece of ethernet cable and set them up as a local network. Should be faster than using wireless.
As I recall, the firewire port disappeared from the newer Macbooks; too bad--FireWire Target Disk mode was a fast and reliable way to move stuff.

  • Transferring files from G4 to new iMac

I just purchased a new iMac to replace my old G4 AGP 400Mhz Powermac. My old G4 had two hard drives installed each of which contained a number of partitions. The only partition which is transferred to my new iMac using the firewire target disk mode is the partition containing the operating system OS X 10.3.9, which was the old start up volume for this Mac. I have numerous other files, applications on the other partitions. Is there any way I can transfer these files? I can't use my new iMac as a firewire target disk, since the monitor on my old Mac no longer works. That's one reason why I decided to upgrade to the iMac. Thanks!

Hello! The monitor doesn't have to be working to use FTD mode however FTD mode only sees the master on the ide chain. I'd suggest either a cheap firewire enclosure to mount the drives in or a 1 gig flash drive. Tom
