Help! transparency from a picture

hello everybody, i need your help.
i want to set the custom cursor with a picture drawn by myself. i draw it in windows' paint, and save it into a jpg file. however, the paint set the background color into white as defult, which means when my cursor comes out, there's an urgly white rectangle with my picture on the screen play as the cursor.
so how can i set the white background of the picture as transparency? please help me.
following is the main part of my programme to set cursor:
final JFrame jf;
     Toolkit tk;
     Cursor cur;
     ImageIcon ic;
     Image img;
tk=jf.getToolkit();
          ic = new ImageIcon( "cursor.jpg" );
          img = ic.getImage();
          cur = tk.createCustomCursor( img, new Point(2,2), "cur");
          jf.setCursor( cur );

Well, JPG is not a good format for cursors siimply because it cannot same any transparency information. Also, the Windows Paint program can not save transparent files at all. Download some image editing program (eg. paint shop pro) that supports GIF files. Then make the white color of your cursor transparent. That's it!
