Help!! Trying to restore mail preferences

I deleted my mail server and did not realize that it would also delete my inbox, sent messages, trash, etc.
I want to restore my mail program to exactly how it was at a back up I did this morning at 5am.
I have Time Machine up and running and when I go back into the old back up I cant find anything related to the mail program. I can't even find the "Library" folder under my user account.
I can not figure out how to do this or even where to find the "mail" folder that has all the preferences and old mailboxes.
Please help!!

To open your User Library, click on your Desktop to activate the Finder, then go to the Finder main menu:
Select the "GO" tab of the Finder menu and hold down the "option" key. Now you will see your User Library in the drop down menu. Click it to open in Finder.
Once the Library folder is visible in a Finder window, you can select the folder icon in the toolbar of the window and drag the icon to the sidebar of the window or to the Dock, to keep it accessible. If you want to find your Library in Time Machine it is important to have the Library accessible in the Finder.
Your Mailboxes are stored in the "Mail" subfolder of your Library, your preference settings in the "Preferences" subfolder in "com.apple.mail.plist".

  • HELP!!! Mail preferences and toolbar  HELP!!! PLEASE!

I am trying to change my font size to default to a lerger size. I looked in email help, and it said to go to mail preferences, and select font & color, There is no Font & Color in my email preferences! Also whenever I shut down my Mac, my email icon dissapears from my tool bar, How do I get it to stay?

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
I think you have your Toolbar hidden. The simplest way to show the Toolbar, is to click on the small, white, pill-shaped button at the top right of the Mail Preference pane -- do you see this?
For the issue of the Mail Icon, do you mean the Dock, rather than the Toolbar? If you mean Dock, have you ever removed the Mail Icon from the Dock? If, once you have launched Mail, and it is in the Dock, Conrol-click over that Icon, and choose Keep in Dock from the resulting contextual menu.
    More info, please.

  • Trying to open mail preferences in OS X 10.8.2 blocks mail application.

I'm currently working with OS X 10.8.2. Mail seems to work properly, but when I try to open mail preferences but nothing happens. I can only see the "rainbow wheel" and mail is blocked. I can only force mail's shutdown. Other applications wprks properly.
Could anybody help me? Tx a lot. Riccardo.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Time Machine error while trying to restore Mail.app

Ok, I'm not really sure how to explain the mess I'm in, but I'm going to do my best.
I accidentally deleted two very important Mail accounts. Before I realized that to restore them all I had to do was restore the library files, I attempted to restore the entire Mail.app.
When I did this, I chose to replace it with the backup from last night. Example: I had the Finder open, Mail.app selected, and went to the time machine and went back to last night. It asked me if I wanted to keep the original, keep both, or replace and I chose to replace. It asked for my password (I'm the ONLY user on this computer), I entered it, and then it told me I do not have permission to restore it.
Now, I cannot even open Mail.app. So... I can't even open it to bring it to the foreground to attempt to restore it that way.
How do I restore Mail.app in this case? I have the missing library files restored already... now... what do I do about the program?
FWIW, I'm on 10.5.4... not sure why I haven't upgraded yet.

Ok. I managed to get Mail.app restored... as in, I can open it and I can see the accounts that I didn't accidentally delete.
I restored the files in the Library and I can see the account there... now... how do I get them to show up in Mail.app?

  • Help!  Trying to restore mail!!!

I deleted my mail server and did not realize that it would also delete my inbox, sent messages, trash, etc.
I want to restore my mail program to exactly how it was at a back up I did this morning at 5am.
I can not figure out how to do this or even where to find the "mail" folder that has all the preferences and old mailboxes.

Thanks!  I talks there about restoing the old mailboxes and e-mail.  So at least I know I can get the data back.
Is it no longer like the old days where I can just replace all the mail related docs and files from the "Library" folder and the re-start the program?  I can't even find where any of those files live on the computer anymore.
So then, how would I go about restoring the settings and preferences?  Or do I just have to start from scratch on those?

  • Trying to restore Mail messages & folders

Before doing a clean install of Leopard, I did a complete backup of my system. After restoring my data, I did not realize that I had a problem with Mail. Though many of my email messages are listed, I am missing all of the local sub-folders and their respective messages. I can see other local folders and read the messages, but the sub-folders are all missing. For example, I had a folder called "work" and other work-related folders within them. "Work" is still there, but not the others. Also, I had always kept a backup, local folder of my sent emails. While I can see this list of "sent" messages, I can no longer access any of them: when I attempt to open any local "sent" messages, the content is blank.
Here's the kicker: I've been using Mail a lot each day and am afraid that a fix might wipe out my newer messages. Can anyone offer any advice as to what files I need to restore from my external hard drive without erasing the newer emails?
Thank you very much for any help you can give me.

Hey, it really depends from what you upgraded from. Usually a mailbox rebuild is a simple way to restore everything that "appears" to be missing, but sometimes it can be more tricky.
Here is a link to a previous discussion on this forum that addresses these issues in much detail: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5754646&#5754646
    I hope this helps.

  • Error message trying to save Mail preferences

Writing your preferences to disk has failed. Your preferences may not have been saved. The permissions on ~/Library/Preferences may be wrong or your disk may be full.
I have read previous discussions on this (2011) and used disk utility to clear permissions, but cannot find any mail.plist in Library
    any advice?

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Back up all data now. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to its present state
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • HT1414 i need help :( trying to restore iphone and this comes up :/

this comes up when i finish the restore cant go any further i dont know what to do im desprate please help
The SIM card that you currently have installed in this iPhone is from a carrier that is not supported under the activation policy that is currently assigned by the activation server. This is not a hardware issue with the iPhone. Please insert another SIM card from a supported carrier or request that this iPhone be unlocked by your carrier. Please contact Apple for more information.

It sounds as if your iphone has been hacked/unofficially unlocked and has now been locked back to the rightful carrier.
You would have to contact the carrier to whom the iphone is locked to see if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.

I downloaded a Artist lesson and it stopped during the download I could not find it anywhere and so I downloaded the latest version of garageband and it won't let me restore any previous purchases. The restore purchase section is grey and won't let me click on it.  Please help!

Is the "Download more sounds" button active? See
"Expanding GarageBand for Mac (v10.0) content with an in-app purchase"
If neither of these buttons is active, there may be a problem with your Apple ID. Are any restrictiins active? Are you in the same conutry you were, when you bought GarageBand?

  • My Firefox history has disappeared and I need help trying to restore it. Please help!

CCleaner, out of no where, decided to delete most of my Firefox history the last time I used it. There's a tiny part of my browser history that's still there, but most of it's gone. If someone can PLEASE help me, you have no idea how grateful I would be.

Firefox doesn't keep backup copies of the history like is done with the bookmarks, so if you didn't create such a backup yourself then you are probably out of luck.
I don't know if Windows keeps previous (shadow) copies of the places.sqlite file.

  • HT1414 i need help trying to restore my iPhone

i changed my passcode and typed in the wrong passcode to get in my phone and has put a lock on it. i went to itunes to restore it and it says i need to put the passcode in on my phone first to select my device through itunes. im not able to put in my passcode trough my phone.

It will only do that if that is not the computer you normally sync with, or if you set the passcode since the last time you synced with that computer.
Google "iPhone recovery mode". You will need to force it into recovery mode and restore.

  • I have this message appearing "the application finder has unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows"... someone PLEASE help

I have this message appearing "the application finder has unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows"...
So far it doesn't appear to be effecting anything that i can see on my imac BUT it is incredibly annoying and popping up at bad times, and it all happened when my imac automatically updated itself. So annoying. PLEASE help!!!

Finder crashes are often caused by "Google Drive." If it's installed, I suggest you first check for an update. If that doesn't solve the problem, remove it according to the developer's instructions. You may need to start the computer in safe mode to do so. Back up all data before making any changes.
If you use Google Drive and don't want to remove it, then try deselecting the option in its preferences to "show status icons." According to reports, that may be enough to stop the crashing.
Similar cloud-data clients such as "Dolly Drive," "iDrive," "Open Drive," "Transporter Desktop," and others can cause the same problem.

  • New mac 5 days old daughter accessed a movie website and now keep being redirected to this site. Have erased her as user and tried to restore factory settings. Now computer running Internet recovery and I am lost. Please help

New Mac only 5 days old. Daughter accessed a movie website and now popups keep appearing and unable to access any other Internet sites without being redirected. Have deleted her as a user and then tried to restore to factory settings. I did something wrong and it is now doing an Internet recovery. Help I am completly lost and don't know what I am doing.

You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • HELP- TRIED A WIPE/RESTORE AND ONLY WIPED, CANNOT RESTORE

    This is what happened.
I attempted to do a wipe/restore on iTunes using the Restore button in Summary.  I went there and it asked me to update to 4.2.10 iOS.  Ok so I tried but the download timed out so I installed it manually.  Done.  Now I was able to get through the restore just by selecting the icws file.  Now I was assuming that it was backing up before the restore began.  So it wiped the iPhone and then I went to do a backup restore.  Failed, not enough space, Nothing!  I saw the backup in my devices in preferences, but I couldn't reload it!! My mobileme/backup folder was empty, but when I checked spacemonger to find it I saw a whole crap GUID files (just a bunch of numbers) but were in a different folder, so I copied those to the mobileme/backup folder where it should belong.  Still I could not restore!  There is about 10GB worth of these GUID files which appears to be the backup that was made.  I tried right clicking my iPhone and doing a restore from backup but it did a 5 second thing which I know is impossible.  The only thing I managed to get back on it was my Apps.   My contacts, email, photos, music, all gone.
Can anyone help me manually restore?  Maybe from my AppleID account or maybe there is a way to get those GUID files in order where iTunes can recognize it?  I'm almost certain that 10GB worth of GUID files is my backup that was created just got lost or misplaced.
Also you should not that EVERYTIME I do a restore it asked me to update the iOS first, which is ALREADY UP TO DATE!

    Error 1611
This error typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. FollowTroubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, this error may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
If you also unsuccessful on another computer then time for an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. It would see that your iPod needs service as specified in the article.
