Help, unable to boot clean Solaris 10 install

I use Solaris at work, but have never done any sysadmin.
I have installed Solaris 10 on a new Intel Core2 Duo machine at home, but when I select Solaris 10 (not failsafe) from GRUB2, my machine reboots right after the "Use is subject to license terms", and goes back to GRUB2.
I can boot to the failsafe prompt, but I don't know how to troubleshoot from there.
What I've been able to find online suggests that I turn off ACPI (tried with no luck) and disable USB legacy mode in bios (again, tried with no luck). I'm using an IDE DVD drive to install, and a SATA drive for the OS, so everything is installed on c1d0, not c0d0.
When I run failsafe, it finds Solaris 10 ... X86 on c1d0s0 and I can attach as read/write, but I'm not sure what to do from there to find out why GRUB can't load the OS.
I've tried the Solaris 0606 Test Check CD, which says there are drivers for my complete system except for the audio (no driver) and the network (third party, I haven't bothered to get yet).
Please help, I'm totally stuck!
Thanks in advance,
Brett

Sorry, I meant to say GRUB stage 2, not GRUB 2. I'm using the GRUB that came with solaris 0606. GRUB works fine.
mAbrante -
Tried the halt_on_panic=1, had no effect. I'm really not sure what is causing the problem. I've found that if I boot 32 bit mode by editing the GRUB command to append kernel/unix I can boot into solaris. But I'd sure like to be able to boot into 64 bit mode.
Any more thoughts anyone?

  • Ultra 5 won't boot after Solaris 8 install

Hello. After installing Solaris 8 on an ultra 5, the system won't reboot. After trying many permutations of the install, including a bare minimum and the whole shebang, it became clear that the system always hung at the same spot in the boot process (from a boot -v), immediately following the line:
cpu0: SUNW, UltraSPARC IIi (upaid 0 impl 0x12 ver 0x13 clock 270 MHz)
Has anyone seen this problem before? We reset the boot PROM with set-defaults from the ok prompt and that made no difference. This machine ran fine under Solaris 7, so I don't think it's a hardware failure. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I can't tell from your post if you're using a screen/keyboard or a serial console? Have you removed the keyboard and attached a serial terminal to serial port A? Several types of hardware failure will output errors there even if the failure occurs before the framebuffer is initialized (memory errors are common).

  • Unable to boot arch after re-installing nvidia

My system is x64. I have Ubuntu installed along with Arch on a different partition. After having installed arch with some (probably redundant) nvidia packages, I decided to remove them by installing packam -S nvidia nvidia-uitls.
I had to remove mesa-(something or just mesa, I don't remember) and xf86-video-nouveau. So I installed nvidia nvidia-uitls successfully. Plus after that I installed xfce-settings because as I found out it should have resolved the issue of gnome-terminal. and I added this to xorg.conf:
    Section "Extensions"
        Option "Composite" "Enable"
    EndSection
The bottom line is, I can't boot to arch anymore. Only standard label on the black screen shows up (kvm: disabled by bios) and nothing else happens, meaning it kind of "boots" but it doesn't boot further than showing that label. What can I do?

  • HELP: Unable to boot

OMG can sks please help. I was checking my email this morning when all of a sudden the system just froze. Nothing worked. There was a sound of the hard disk retrying to read then nothing. I rebooted but the machine just shuts down as soon as the grey screen comes on.
I have run the disk utility from the install disk and the hard disk volume is greyed out. When I run verify or repair disk it responds almost straight away with :
    Invalid B-Tree node size
    Volume Check failed
Error : The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
1 Volume could not be repaired.
I then ran the hardware test and it found nothing wrong! I have reset Pram. Still nothing.
    Has anyone got any ideas.
    Many thanks
    Neil

That sort of problem CAN be caused by a hardware issue - it sometimes results from a drive that is developing faults or bad sectors, but more often than not it's the result of a system crash when the directory structure is being written.
With the system booted to the newly formatted and reinstalled drive, check the drive with Disk Utility - under SMART status it should show 'verified', which means that the drive appears in good condition as far as the OS is able to detect (SMART is not always right, but it's a good general guide). If you get any other indication than verified, keep regular backups and be prepared for a failure. Personally in that situation and since the mini is one of the originals and thus just out of warranty, you may want to consider a bit of careful surgery to replace the original drive with a newer, faster one. It's a bit fiddly, but not too difficult to do, and there are some general guides on such service work on Mac minis to be found on the internet.

  • Unable to boot from DVD to install second OS in dual-boot system

After much soul-searching and budget managing I bought a new iMac (my first all-new Mac since 1995!) to replace my beloved MDD, and of course it comes with Lion.  This turned out to be a small problem because there are certain apps that I can't do without that (it turns out) will never be updated to work with anything later than Snow Leopard.
To get past this I installed a second partition and intended to install an older version of the OS so I could boot into that and use the old software.  Everything went fine until I actually tried to start from the (borrowed) install DVD.  All I get is the three long tones that tell me that RAM has failed the POST, and I have to eject the disk while doing a hard restart to get back into Lion.  I've tried several other install disks as well, in versions of the OS back to 10.3 - some do the same thing, others are old enough to be PPC-only.  And I can't just boot from the disks while in Lion because the installer versions don't match.
Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong here?

You need to track down a Mac OS X 10.6 install DVD which came with that model of Mac or create a Mac OS X 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 system elsewhere and clone it to that partition.

  • Unable to boot to Solaris 10 CD

    Hello everyone,
Here at the office we have an old Ultra 10. I downloaded and created the 4 CD's from downloaded ISO (extracted from zips), but the box refuses to boot from the CDROM1. Just to be safe, I re-downloaded the cd1 ISO, re-extracted, followed explicitly the sun instructions on how to burn to CD (using cdrecorrd), did the md5sum, and everything checks out okay.
But I get this error on boot:
    Rebooting with command: boot cdrom
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/cdrom@2,0:f File and args:
    Short disk read
The file just loaded does not appear to be executable
I have made sure it was a 700MB CD, made sure it was burnt at DAO... I've been rummaging through the internet looking for solutions, but all the suggestions seem to check out.

I assume one of the following:
    1. Media burning is not in X1 (some old CD-ROMs do not recongnize media burnt in more burning speed than their pre-defined ability.]
    2. Wrong burning process -
you should check to see if you have s0-s6 slices on the CD.
    hope this helps.

  • Unable to boot up solaris 5.7 on sparc

An old ultra sparc refuses to start up. I don't have the original installation cds to try to do some recovery work. Where can I download the Solaris 5.7 installation? Thanks.

You have to set the PC to boot from the usb drive, with the drive connected and the first recovery disc inserted, power up the notebook and hit F9 repeatedly to get the advanced boot menu, select the external usb drive as the boot device and hit enter, see if recovery starts.

  • Boot failure Solaris 10u7 + HP DL160

    Hi,
My system is unable to boot after a fresh install. When I choose the "safe mode" in GRUB, I can boot to a console. When I try to boot normally, the system hangs after the console displays the line, "Configuring devices."
When I add "-kv -m verbose" to the kernel parameters in GRUB, I see the following output:
    Configuring devices.
    ISA-device: asy0
    asy0 is /isa/asy@1,3f8
    pseudo-device:pseudo1
    pseudo1 is /pseudo/zconsnex@1
The boot does not progress past that point. Similar results are observed on OpenSolaris 2009/06
The DL160 requires third party drivers for the disk controller and network interface. I've only installed the driver for the disk controller as I'm not interested in networking this system yet.
Any advice? This failure seems to be related to scanning the PCI bus. Is there any way to tell which device is causing the system to hang?
    Thanks,
    Russ

According to the "FAQ on rootnex bind warning"...
    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/solarisx86/message/16887
... this is a bug in the "bcme" driver. The FAQ lists a way to
suppress the warning and return a "success" result from
dma__bind() anyway, but I think this could lead to data
    corruption.
I'd try to remove Broadcom's driver, and use Sun's "bge" driver
for Broadcom BCM57xx NICs instead (I'm assuming Sun has
fixed their "bge" driver and handles dma__bind() failures).
To use Sun's bge driver you probably have to install a pci device
alias to /etc/driver_aliases for your Broadcom NIC:

Installed a cloned 500g solid state hard drive but unable to boot in macbook pro. Can only hear drive spinning quietly, no chime to launch OS. Total darkness. Can anyone help? thanks in advance!

    Hi Retired Engineer,
Yes, you're right. It is the Seagate Momentus XT and it does not spin. That was just a layman's term for computer illiterate like myself. After hours of inspection & a prayer, I discovered by pulling the 4 GB memory chips out I put in, replacing the 1.5 GB back in for the memory which I upgraded 3 years ago. Chime! It works! So it is the 4 GB memory causing the problem. But why? Does that mean my Macbook Pro does not support with more memory? The fan noise is now gone which I suspect it was caused the other overheating Seagate hard drive & eventually causing the crash. However, the top bar temp indicator shows 174˙F @ 000rpm. Does that also mean the fan on the left is not working? (the right fan on the board works). Do they work simutaneously? Or left fan is just a back up?
Thanks for your reply & kind gesture.

  • [RESOLVED]NF980-G65 Hang on windows 7 install. Unable to boot

    Hello,
I'm a bit at wit's end here.  My old non-MSI motherboard was failing and giving me loud beep errors, so I decided to replace it.  In doing so I was required to update basically the whole computer in order to keep up with tech trends and my new LCD monitor.
I bought an MSI NF980-G65, 4 gb ddr3 RAM, an ADM 64 250 dual core, and a Nvidia GTX 260.  After I installed the hardware, I was unable to access windows vista 32 on my old hard drive.  I assumed this was because of driver conflicts. Because I had no install discs (only upgrade/recovery discs) I was unable to boot from CD, so I purchased windows 7.  Regardless of which disc(32 or 64) I use when I set my boot sequence in BIOS to boot from the CD first, this is what happens:
The screen shows a white loading bar that says "Windows is loading"
The next screen shows "Starting Windows" with a small "microsoft corporation" logo below it.  It sometimes has a red pixel on the screen.
The next screen it flips to is all blank.  From there it does nothing, no matter how long I leave it.
I have tried booting with no graphics card(internal only)
I have tried booting with no HD attached.
I have tried booting with only one HD attached (of two I've done this both ways)
My HD's have been checked and they are fine
I have tried booting using another dvd rom drive
I have tried swapping IDE HD slots with that of the dvd.
the DVD does use a pci extension card because the sable is not long enough for the dvd player, but regardless of where that IDE cable is plugged in, it still hangs in the load screen and does not go anywhere.
I've seen this symptom mentioned, but not per this motherboard, it seems like a BIOS setting issue but I feel like I've tried them all (disable LAN etc).
If I try to boot to the old Vista 32 install, it says "starting windows" but the logo does not appear, and the progress bar does not fill.
If I try booting vista 32 in any safe mode the load hangs on a .sys file.
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get this going in the right direction? This has become very frustrating.
    Thanks,
    Alex

What are your complete system specs?  Need the complete picture.  What ram and timings?  Tried 1 dimm in slot closest to cpu?
Since posting this I have tried formatting my Small drive listed above.  I was only able to erase the info using Killdisk.  The format from windows using my old Motherboard (Abit) would not work.  Last night I let the system try to install windows 7 all night, I had 2gb of ddr3 in 1 dimm slot closest to the cpu.  I connected only the above drive after it was whiped, no graphics card (limited on board graphics are on the motherboard) and the install still hung as usual.  Does Killdisk do some sort of improper format? I had assumed that it would erase all data to provide a clean slate.  But I don't even thing a HD is required in order to boot up to the main setup screen?
Do I have voodoo in my machine?

As the title stated, I'm unable to boot back to my mac os x after i successfully installed windows 7.

X on startup should take you into OS X
For now, go to Windows control panels : Boot Camp and change the default OS there.
Whether it is keyboard, bluetooth, or karma, some people's systems do seem to have trouble on the timing or getting Option/Alt to bring up the EFI Boot menu/manager.

Likely it is network related and you simply don't have access to the DBMS on the Solaris machine. You'll have to check that out with your local friendly administrator and/or DBA.
Otherwise you'll have to produce some sort of error message if you want any kind of hints and tips, with no information at all nobody can help you.

    1. Have you tried both Alt keys - maybe your Alt key is dead.
    2. Do you have wireless keyboard? Have you tried to change batteries? USB Keyboard?
    3. If your Win is installed correctly then you have also installed all windows support software.
There should be Startup manager like on the Mac (next to the clock little bootcamp app or in control pannel) to restart your Mac into the Mac partition.
