Help understanding/trusting backups
I am afraid to back up my phone manually - and rely completley on iCould backups. This is an issue because much of my music is on CDs and I would like to add more content to my phone. I have had bad experiences in the past with notes going missing. Also historic did not reappear after I changed my setings.
In order to do this I need to connect my phone to the computer. I am worried that if I connect to the computer that my notes and app content will go missing.
Looking at previous posts I found this response, which is not reassuring as I don't understand what it means.
This is a previous response to another user.

iCloud does not back up apps. However, once you restore from an iCloud backup, they will automatically redownload and your app data will be preserved.
My question is: since iCloud does not back up apps where are the apps and their associated data downloaded from automaticlaly?
My question is where does are the data and app preserved so they can be returned to my phone with all their settings in tact?
Thanks so much.
Whatever music you have on CD must be contained in your computer's iTunes Library. Backing up your iPhone does not back up its music library - nor does iCloud Backup for that matter. If you want to back up your phone's content, back it up to your computer, and make sure that your computer is backed up as well.
Apple says you get "unlimited free storage for music, movies, TV shows, apps, and books" but then goes on to say "previous purchases may not be restored if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore". Therefore what you purchased is really not "backed up". Your "backup" is no more than your ability to download your purchases again, and that is nothing new. The content remains where it originated - on Apple's iTunes Store, if it's still available.
Apple could easily change its mind and remove it, change it, or simply make it unavailable.
Photos and videos in your camera roll are backed up, but photos and music that originated on your computer's iPhoto and iTunes Libraries are not.
Your free 5 GB of iCloud storage is also used for iWork documents stored in iCloud, app data, all of which is lumped in with "Storage and Backup".
Same thing for iTunes Match I'm afraid... iTunes Match does not back up your content and is therefore not a backup strategy. It finds a "match" in its vast library and permits you to access it. There have been a lot of complaints from purists who found their mono Beatles tracks were "matched" with stereo equivalents, "explicit" tracks matched with clean, etc.
Contrast this with a traditional backup associated with iTunes syncing. In that case everything really is backed up to your computer - apps, purchases, music, videos, everything.
The bottom line is that iCloud is no substitute for one's own iTunes backup, and a backup / clone of the device containing it.

Help understand external backup
I have backed up my hard drive on a western digitall 250 GB external hard drive using a usb cable.
This was done 4 months ago.
I would like to add any new info on the computer to the backup external hard drive.
1. Must I reformat the external hard drive to save the new info ? Or, can I just add on to what is already saved ?
2. This 250 GB western digital external hard drive does not have a fire wire. What does this mean for me ? Can I reboot my computer later using this external hard drive ? I have some CD's that came with the computer which I believe contain the operating system and applications. Am I correct ? Could I reboot the computer with the CD's and than add the info I have stored on the external hard drive ?
Thank you in advance for your help.
I book G 4 Mac OS X (10.4.8)You can use Disk Utility to make a backup, but you cannot do incremental updates from it.
Here's what I would do:
1. Download and install SuperDuper.
2. Use it as for a first time backup. It will delete your external HDD and then backup everything to it.
3. Next time you want to update your backup SuperDuper will do an incremental update.
I do not really know what reboot means.
It means you cannot use your external HDD as a startup drive. You can only use it for backing up your data.
Can I reinstall the operating system from the CD's ? Is that something that makes sense ? And then have the computer read the info that is on the external hard drive (music, photos, etc.) ?
Super Duper will do that for you, as described above. As I explained in my earlier post, you cannot do it by booting from your install disk.
Good luck.

Hi - I want to establish my Time capsule at the other end of the house, for security reasons. If a fire occurs at my computer, it is not much help if the backup is adjacent. From what I have read, the TC requires an ethernet connection to the outside world (which is where my computer is). I don't understand this; I think my wireless network (airport) should be able to handle backups, since it is capable of broadcasting video, which has a much higher transfer bit-rate. So, why can't I use Airport for my backups to Time Capsule?
- Thanks, GarethYou can absolutely back up to your time capsule via wifi. This is what the majority of people with a time capsule do. It connects to a modem or WAN access point via ethernet though.

Understanding Azure Backup Retention
I'm not seeing the expected behavior of Azure Backup regarding retention. Since Azure Backup is charged by the amount of data stored, we intend to keep the cost as low as possible by only storing the most recent backup. That is, we expect to only
pay for the storage costs of one day's worth of recover points, which in our case will be one because we do only one backup per day. We are still performing onsite backup, and there we keep many days worth of backup recovery points.
On the Microsoft Azure Backup application's main screen, under "Destination usage" it shows "Retention: 1 days". However, I see under "Available Recovery Points" it shows "Total backups: 15", "Latest
copy: 12/29/2014 4:30 AM", "Oldest copy: 12/19/2014 12:35 PM". When I visit the Recovery Services "PROTECTED ITEMS" on
https://manage.windowsazure.com/, I see the number of "RECOVERY POINT", "NEWEST RECOVERY POINT", and "OLDEST RECOVERY POINT" shown match the same values displayed on the Microsoft
Azure Backup application's main screen.
Why is Azure Backup retaining more recovery points than expected? Why is it retaining recovery points for more days than requested?
Trilon, Inc.I'm happy to provide you with any information I can to help diagnose and repair this issue. But first, let me catch you up with my situation.
A change has occurred in my situation since I posted my question regarding understanding Azure Backup retention. I separately posted a question regarding Azure Backup on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard fails to back up thousands of files with CATALOG FAILURE
0x80131500 (see
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/fb0c64f3-0066-4580-a21d-75e5af9fc879/azure-backup-on-windows-server-2008-r2-standard-fails-to-back-up-thousands-of-files-with-catalog?forum=windowsazureonlinebackup). In an attempt to resolve the issue myself,
I tried to install 3 different updates/patches/hotfixes. In addition, while working on the problem with a Microsoft Support Engineer, I was directed to re-register the servers with Azure Backup. After all those changes, Azure Backup no longer worked at all
on either server. Then, when I was told the CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500 issue was resolved in the Microsoft backend servers, I deleted the Azure Backup vaults and uninstall the the Azure Backup software on both of my troubled servers. Finally, I downloaded
and installed a fresh copy of the latest Azure Backup software, created new vaults, and started performing backup again. As expected, the CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500 errors no longer occured. It appears that there never was a problem with either of my servers;
instead, the CATALOG FAILURE 0x80131500 root cause was indeed located in the Microsoft backup servers, and is now fixed.
Because of the starting over described above, I no longer have quite so many unexpected Available Recovery Points. However, I again have more than one showing up on my Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and Windows Small Business Server 2011, despite both having
a retention setting of 1 day and performing one daily backup job.
So now I'll try and supply the requested information:
1) The Azure backup agent numbers: Tell me where I can find them, and I'll provide them.
2) Here's the requested Windows Registry value requested for our DJTS system, running Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard:

I need help understanding how the Apple components connect to create a whole system across all my devices?
Is there a resource that describes current system and associated functionality?
For example:
Buy A, B, C to achieve "X"
You will need:
an internet provider which supports <specs>
add D to achieve "Y"
You will need:
an internet provider which supports <specs>
add "E" to achieve "Z"
You will need:
an internet provider which supports <specs>
For example, I am looking at the Gen 6 Airport extreme. For intended performance do I need broadband? if so what are the specs, or will basic internet service suffice? Do I need the internet provider's modem or does the Airport extreme replace that? And then I think, if I am doing this, I should also look at Apple TV....What do I need and Why? Then I look at the New Desk top coming out in the fall, and I think well, if I wait and get this, what does this component do for the system, and what becomes redundant? What does this awesome desktop do for my ability to sit and use a new macbook air when I travel or sit on the couch in my PJs?
If there was a place that plainly stated "if you buy the new dektop you can configure a system including only these components and achieve <this result> and by adding <additional components> you will achieve this result.
I have been to the genius store a few times, but I come out of there more confused unless I have SPECIFIC questions or already know what to buy.
A "System Configuration App" would be a really great sales tool--Just saying.I have no idea what "fully optimized" means.
No Apple device will let you watch broadcast TV. The Apple TV is a good option for watching streaming TV from iTunes, NetFlix and Hulu. If you want to watch from other sources, you may need to look at other devices.
Any Mac computer or iPad will allow you to surf the web.
What business software?
Time Capsule is a good option for back ups.
Update what across all devices?
For accessing documents from all devices, a service like Dropbox is your best bet.
I have no idea what "step as far away from an internet provider as possible" means. If you want Internet access, you need an Internet provider.
Lighting fast speed for what? Processor? The specs are listed for all devices in the Online Store. Internet? We're back to the service provider.
Technology changes. The only way to keep pace with it beyond a couple of years is to buy new stuff.
The bottom line is you need to look at the specs for devices availble and at your budget and decide what best meets your needs. If you are unable to do that on your own, there are lot of technology consultants out there who will, for a fee, look at your exact situation, make recommendations and even handle the purchase and set up. Perhaps that would be the best route for you.
Best of luck. -
Please help me install backup assistant plus
please help me install backup assistant plus
I would recommend you use Google android services for you device. I have used Google in almost all of my phones and with never a problem. Backup assistant plus is not as stable or as easy to use as Google. Just set up a Google account if you don't have one already (and I'm sure you do) . Give it a try
Do a Google backup
1. Sign in to your Google's device, online account and go to settings.
2. Personal, Backup and reset, and select both Backup my data and Automatic restore.
3. Go to Settings, Personal, Accounts & Sync, and select your Google account.
4. Select all of the option boxes listed, to ensure that all available data is synced.
5. Though the specific procedure may slightly vary between Android devices, the process is generally the same. -
Import finished with few errors...Help understanding it!
Hi all,
Yesterday, I finished to do an import in oracle. I used the impdp command and got few errors after the import was done. Here are some bits from my log. It was very long but I shortened it with the most common errors. I would appreciate your help understanding what does each error mean, and whether there's a solution available.
Thanks!

El trabajo "SYS"."SYS_IMPORT_FULL_01" ha terminado con 2249 error(es) en 17:21:02Hello people,
I just run for the second time a full import, and it said it finished correctly.
The first time I run it, there was a message which said that the import had finished with 2249 errors (I checked my log and not all of them were errors but messages). I checked each single message and only had to solve a couple of things.
I first created a user in response to an ora-29393: user string does not exist or is not logged on.
The second thing I did was to run the utlrp.sql file in response to an ORA-39082. I did this according to this blog.
I know oracle is taking precedence each time I run an import. I don’t know if what I have done is okay or perhaps not all data was imported after all. This is the thread which I posted initially when errors came out.
Any reply is a supply.

Help understand how this works
Hows everyone doing, i need some help understand this. This is my first time using Lulu. From the reviews i'v read about it they tell me this is the #1 place to come to to get my books printed. Here the question, i have all 3 of my books ready to be uploaded do i just sent that in, then they send me the prints ? or so they self them for me. Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but its my first time using this particular site.
Here's a quick overview:
You start the new book wizard. Click "Create," pick a book type and size (hardcover, paperback, etc.; 6x9, 8.5 x 11, etc.), and click "Make this book."
Hint: If you want the widest distribution for your book, pick a size / type that has a green checkmark next to it.
The wizard will guide you to name your book, apply an ISBN (or get a free one), upload your contents, and upload your cover or design a cover. It will guide you to set pricing and distribution, and many other options.
When you've done all that, your book will be available to order. You will see two prices: the one you pay, and the one other people pay. The one you pay is the printing cost per book. It may be anywhere from $2.50 to $20.00 or more, depending on options you pick -- probably coser to the low end.
On that first page, where it says "Create," there is a calculator that will figure roughly what your book will cost (printing costs), so you can plan your options around that calculator.
So you order as many books as you want, pick shipping, pay with a credit card, and in a few days, the books are on your doorstep.
I hope that helps. -

I backed up to my PC and attempted restore but I keep getting an error message that "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free space is available." I have a 32GB iPhone; only 13GB used!!! HELP! iCloud backup/restore did not work either! How can I resolve this problem to restore from back up.
If you're not a developer then you really should not have upgraded.
I'm unsure how you can fix this as you have already done a back-up on iOS 7 and apple don't support firmware downgrades. -
Need some help understanding the way materialized views are applied through
Hi, I need some help understanding the way materialized views are applied through adpatch.
In patch 1, we have a mv with build mode immediate. When applying it PTS hang due to pool performance of mv refresh.
So we provide patch 2, with that mv build mode deferred, hoping it'll go through. But patch 2 hang too on the same mv.
How does this work? Is that because mv already exists in the database with build immediate, patch 2 will force it to refresh first before changing build mode? How to get over this?
Thanks,
WeiHi Hussein,
Thank you for the response.
Application release is 11.5.10.
Patch 1 is MSC11510: 8639586 ASCP ENGINE RUP#38 PATCH FOR 11.5.10 BRANCH
Patch 2 is MSC11510: 9001833 APCC MSC_PHUB_CUSTOMERS_MV WORKER IS STUCK ON "DB FILE SEQUENTIAL READ" 12 HOURS
The MV is APPS.MSC_PHUB_CUSTOMERS_MV
This happens at customer environment but not reproducable in our internal environment, as our testing data is much smaller.
Taking closer look in the logs, I saw actually when applying both patch 1 and patch 2, MV doesn't exist in the database. So seems my previous assumption is wrong. Still, strange that patch 2 contains only one file which is the MV.xdf, it took 7 hours and finally got killed.

Need help creating a backup strategy
Hello,
I have never backed up any data in my life (long time mac user, no problems) and have just recently bought the Lacie d2 250 firewire drive. The reason for this purchase was that I am sending my MBP in for repairs and began reseaching various backup software. Now I am completley paranoid and somewhat confused. Here are my questions to the pro's:
1) I know that I would like to have a clone of my drive so that if my drive goes to heaven I can I can boot off the external backup and restore. Now, does this mean that I have to clone my drive nightly to be up to date?
2) I have read that some programs will do incremental backups of only files that have been changed. My confusion here: Is the clone modified? Or are these programs seperate backup files that I would have to restore in addition to restoring from the bootable clone?
3) I would like to have a bootable clone and backup changes in documents/ new files nightly. Nothing superfancy. From my understanding superduper can do this, data backup x can do this ($$$), and I suppose the list goes on. In your opinion what program would provide the most time effiecnt means/ sensable method to do this?
4) if you do something similar to what i want to do, can you give an example of your stratagy?
Thank you all in advance. I will give helpfull points to all!
MBP 17'' 2.16, 1g, 120 @ 5400 Mac OS X (10.4.6)
MBP 2.16, 1g, 120 @ 5400 Mac OS X (10.4.6)Hi,
It sounds like you need SuperDuper!.
From what I know, it will do bootable clones, incrementals, and the other things you need. I only use it to backup my home folder to an image on my firewire HDD. I have limited backup space which is why I don't do a full clone. Also I think it requires you to reformat your external HDD if you want to make it a bootable clone. Check out their documentation for more info - it's pretty easy to use but going thru the documentation will give you all the options and help you to define how you want to backup.
You can download it free to try but you need to buy it to get access to all of the features, like scheduling and incremental backups. At US$27.95 I think it's a bargain tho..

Need help understanding Time Capsule file structure and how to get it back
I have the original Time Capsule on which I backup both my Mac Pro and my wife’s Macbook. When Snow Leopard came out, I successfully used the ‘Restore from Time Machine’ feature on my Mac Pro so I know it has worked. However, my wife’s MacBook harddrive died the other day and I was trying to do the ‘Restore from Time Machine’ and all it would find was a backup from April (when I put her in a new larger drive). Time Machine would not find any backup files newer that April. She stated that she had seen the the Time Machine backup notices regularly and as recent as the day the haddrive died (Nov. 23) so I figured that I should have no problem. Here is what I have found in my trouble shooting and what leads to my questions below.
This is the file structure I found: (note that our ID’s are ‘Denise’ and ‘John’)
*Time Capsule* (the drive as listed in my Finder window sidebar under ‘shared’)
>Folder called ‘Time Capsule’ (when logged in as either ‘Denise’ or ‘John’)
>>Denise Sparsebundle
>>>Backup of Denise’s iBook (mounted image)
>>>>Folder called ‘Backups.backupdb’
>>>>>Folder called ‘Denise’s iBook
>>>>>>Single folder with old April backup (not the right files)
>>John Sparsebundle
>>>Backup of John’s Mac Pro (mounted image)
>>>>Folder called ‘Backups.backupdb’
>>>>>Folder called ‘John’s Mac Pro’
>>>>>>Folders containing all my backup files
>Folder Called ‘Denise’ (if logged as ‘Denise’)
>>Denise’s Sparsebundle (a disk image)
>>>Backup of Denise iBook (the mounted image. Name from old machine)
>>>>Backups.Backupdb
>>>>>Denise’s iBook (Contains the backup I need)
>Folder Called ‘John’ (if logged in as ‘John’)
>> (empty)
For some reason, my wife’s backup files are stored within a folder located at the top level of the Time Capsule drive called ‘Denise’, however, mine are within a folder called ‘Time Capsule’ which is at the same level as the ‘Denise’ folder.
For some reason, when trying to use Time Machine to recover, it bypasses the top level ‘Denise’ folder which contains the correct files and goes into the ‘Time Capsule’ folder and finds the outdated backup files.
I would assume that both my backup files and my wife’s should be at the same level of the Time Capsule.
I was eventually able to use Migration Assistant to recover the files after installing a fresh OS and mounting the correct Sparsebundle image.
So, my question, how do I get this fixed so that if I have to recover a drive with Time Capsule, it will find the correct files.
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance for any help.John Ormsby wrote:
What I was trying to determine is why different backups for one particular machine are located at different file structure levels on my Time Capsule and why the most resent one for that machine is at a different level that for my other machine. Also, what is the correct level that both machines backups should be at.
well John, first can you clarify if you are on 10.4.8 as your profile suggests ? if so, i'm wondering how you can use TM at all because TM was introduced with Leo. if you're not on 10.4.8, please update your profile. if you could, please also indicate details of your machine such as available RAM, processor, etc.
second, what OS is your wife's machine running ?
third, i frankly don't know too much about TM's file structure or if there indeed is such a thing as the correct one. however, i do know that it is best to leave TM to do its thing (as long as it's working). FWIW, though off-topic, you may want to have a look at this read for further information.
last but not least, i see TM backups to my TC only as a part of my backup strategy. the backbone of my strategy is to create bootable clone of my startup disk(s) using e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner on a regular basis. while TM is capable of doing a full system restore, i don't trust it as much as a working clone. i use TM to retrieve a file i accidentally trashed a week ago but you cannot boot from a TM backup if your startup disk goes belly up.
If I have missed this information in either the FAQs or the Troubleshooting article, I would greatly appreciate being pointed to it .
i expect you didn't miss anything and i'm sorry you didn't find any help there. perhaps if Pondini (author of the FAQ and troubleshooting user tips) reads this thread, you will get the necessary advice on the file structure and more besides.
good luck to you ! -

0x7fff8f381000This worked for me. I posted just in case somebody else is looking for a temporary solution.
After discussing directly with the app developer, here is the temporary solution till next update comes up...
Thank you for your support inquiry, I'm glad to help! There is an issue with BibleReader crashing on Macs running Mountain Lion (this seems to mainly occur on Mac laptops.) Our software developers are aware of this issue and it should be resolved in a future update to BibleReader. Until the time that this is resolved we have found a workaround by changing the display setting on your Mac. Unfortunately, you may find that this display setting is not as visually appealing as some of the other display settings. My sincerest apologies for this inconvenience.
Please follow the steps below from your Mac to change your display settings:
Go to System Preferences
Select Displays
Select Color
If "Show profiles for this display only" is checked, uncheck it

EMOD HELP- understanding campaign recipient metrics - need emod pro
Hi,
I have sent a Campaign out to 27k customers on the 19th January (first time EMOD user).
I need to create reports and analyses based on recipient metrics. So far, I have loaded a report using the Campaign Response History in CRM Reports and downloaded this into excel. What I am trying to find out is how many out of the 27k have received the email (delivered) and how many have bounced back.
*1.* Firstly I'd like to undertand what exactly do # of Recipients, # of Recipients, # of Hard Bounces, # of Open Responses, # of Responders, # of Responses, mean? So far I have figured out that soft + hard + open = # responses. Not sure if that is correct?
*2.* Some lines show blank in the count of # recipients, #responses etc... however there is an email address in the appropriate column. Has the email been sent or not? Has it been delivered? How can we make sure?
*3.* Then, looking at the 'Email' columns in my excel spreadsheet (this is who we sent the campaign to), it looks like some email addresses are missing (blank) however they are in CRM? Has the campaign been sent or not?
*4.* I'd also like to understand some individual lines reading as:
# recipient: 44
# soft bounces: 0
# hard bounces 15
# responders 28
# responses 35
# opened 20
email address: [email protected]
Is all of this for just 1 single email? Does this mean that the email was sent multiple times to just one single address? Why do the # recipients show 44?
*5.* Why do some lines show responses metrics if the email is blank?
*6.* On the overall campaign, how can I accurately measure the number of emails that have been sent and delivered?
Any answer to these questions would be great - sorry I know there are loads of questions.
Kind regards
CarineCarine, here is my response:
1) See below for definitions.
2) All email recipients who have an email address and who do not have the Never Email flag checked are Sent an email. Whether they receive it or not is not always known. See below for explanation of why we don't always know if an email was received.
3) I'd have to see the report to understand what you are describing.
4) # of Recipients - Count of Campaign Recipients
# of Responses - Count of All Campaign Responses (Opt in to List, Opt out from List, Global Opt-out, Global Opt-in, Click-through on trackable url, opened email with images turned on)
# of Responders - Count of All respondents for a campaign (how many recipients clicked something?)
# Hard Bounces - Count of responses where response type equal to ‘Hard Bounce’
# Soft Bounces - Count of responses where response type equal to ‘Soft Bounce’
# of Open Responses - Count of responses where response type equal to ‘Message Opened’
# of Click Through - Count of responses where response type equal to ‘Click-through’
# of Opt Ins - Count of responses where response type equal to ‘Opt-in’
# of Opt Outs - Count of responses where response type equal to ‘Opt-out’
# of Global Opt Ins - Count of responses where response type equal to ‘Global Opt-in’
# of Global Opt Outs - Count of responses where response type equal to ‘Global Opt-out’
If your report was set up to report on one email campaign, then this is what the metrics are reporting on.
5) I'd have to see the report to understand what you are describing.
6) The recieving email server does not always tell EMOD that a message was received. If the email contained the Track Message Open tag, and the recipient receives html email and has images turned on, then EMOD will get notified that this email was opened. Otherwise, EMOD does not know if the message was opened or not (unless the recipient clicked something).
Hope this helps.
