Help - Unknown Error 2006 "iPhone could not be restored"

Hi there - has anyone else been plagued with this? I tried to sync my iPhone 3G (less than a year old) and it wouldn't sync. I tried to restore it and it went partially through the process and bailed returning an error. I went to the discussion boards who recommended (not necessarily in this order) rebooting, using a different USB cable, a different computer, reinstalling iTunes, turning off Little Snitch, turning off Firewall, using an on-board USB port. Absolutely NOTHING worked and my phone is bricked. Now, despite everything all I get is "iPhone" could not be restored An unknown error occured (2006).
Can anyone help?

Close iTunes and unplug iphone
Search web and download the 2.2.1 ipsw file.
Go to device manager on PC and delete the USB option for Apple under the hardware options.
Reboot PC
Plug in iphone and wait for dreaded connection picture
hold power button and home button until apple logo appears
continue to hold home button and release power button until connection picture appears again
Your PC should now find the iphone in recovery mode
Now open iTunes and it will prompt you to restore
Hold the shift button on the keyboard and click the restore button at the same time
This will allow you to browse for the correct ipsw file
select the 2.2.1 file that you downloaded
your iphone will now restore
Once completed, you will need to resync
Now you are back to square one but at least have a phone that works
Now make an appt at the Genius Bar and make them update it for you
Mine is scheduled for next week

These error message is not listed in common issues for iPhone 4 trouble shooting. Does any one knows what is about, or any approach to solve this matter?

Hi iPhone experts...I need your valuable suggestion...
My iphone 4 ios7 was having an censor issue...after fixing the censor issue...It's worked only for 4 hrs....after that it's came to Restore mode.
While I am trying to restore ..throwing an error "The iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred(1)."
    It's out of warranty.....
1.) I would like to know if there was any Mother board issues?
and also would like to know
2.) without doing anything suddently why it's went to restore mode?
3.) if that really a mother board issue, is it repairable(Location- Hyderabad-India)
Thanks in advance for your help

Try restoring it again. If it fails with the same error message, that pretty much always indicates a hardware failure. The phone will have to be replaced.

  • TS1424 when i try restore my iphone 3G, 8GiG, i get an error message, " iphone could not be restored, error 1015"

    hello:
i have an ATT sim card in the phone, then i get this error message, Error 1015

I got the same error as well, and what people say to me is that error 1015 is most likely caused when you have your phone hacked/unlocked unauthorized in other words like jail breaking or trying to downgrade or upgrade with means OTHER THAN  or not through upgrading through itunes or however appple authorized procedure

  • ERROR 1011 iPhone could not be restored message after 1.1.1 update

Avoid update if you can (note - you CAN'T restore without updating so don't restore unless absolutely necessary). My phone is dead. An iTunes logo and cable icon appeared on the screen; two more restore attempts to no avail. Have been on hold to advanced tech support for 21 minutes....others must be having same problem. Anyone know what to do?? Thanks!

I am having the exact same problem and tried everything from changing USB ports, restarting the Mac, and trying the update on a different computer. My phone is neither unlocked or hacked. Nothing worked so I called AppleCare and the case was escalated to a product specialist. They are sending me out a box so the phone can be repaired. I was told it would be about a 3 day turnaround from the time they received the phone. They offered a loaner phone for $29, but it wasn't going to be here until Monday, so I turned it down. I tried the SIM card from the iPhone in my old phone and it worked just fine despite what the AppleCare rep said. They didn't have me try anything over the phone to fix the problem, so I would guess they most be aware that there is a problem with this update.
It just seems strange to me that it works for some folks and not for others.

  • The iphone could not be restored an unknown error occurred 1013 ATTt iPhone

    AT&T iPhone 4
Last night when I plugged my phone in to iTunes, it told me I needed to update my phone. So I tried to do it. Then it said I need to restore it. So I pressed the "restore button". After several minutes, I get a pop-up error box stating "the iphone "iPhone" could not be restored an unknown error occurred 1013". I've read other discussions with the same issue, but none of the solutions work.
    Please help.

Exact same thing happened to me. I took it to a local Apple Store and they told me the port was corroded and so they replaced the phone. I took the phone back home, plugged it into itunes, told it to restore my old contacts, and BOOM same error. Iphone could not be restored an unknown error occurred 1013.
Seeing as how the nearest Apple Store is a two hour round trip from here, I'm very upset. What is up with this last update?

This error normally appears if you attempted to downgrade or modify your iOS. See here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694#error1015

  • It says it needs to be connected to itunes and restored.  when i do that, it goes through the whole process then comes up with "iphone could not be restored. unknown error code (-1)".  Please help

My brother gave me his old iphone when the touch screen went out on mine.  It's in great shape but when I received it, it says that it needs to be connected to itunes to be restored.  I have done this and it goes through the whole process then says iphone "iphone" could not be restored.  unknown error code (-1).  There is not a -1 code on the list and I have tried most of the suggestions.
Does my sim card need to be in when I am doing this?  And any other suggestions?

I did put it in DFU mode but its still not working, although everytime it shows your iphone needs to be restored. Kindly help.

  • TS3694 Can't restore and recover iPhone 4s. Keep getting The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14). Help please!

Please help. I simply connected my iPhone 4s to my Dell laptop (Win 8) which connected to iTunes automatically (which it normally does) and was told that I needed to update my software (I believe for both iPhone OS and iTunes). I tried to update and now my iPhone won't work at all. I just keep going in circles trying to restore and recover and I keep getting the error message: The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (14). All I see on my iPhone 4s screen is a cable connector, a little up arrow, and an iTunes symbol--and nothing else works.

This means that either your firewall/antivirus is blocking access to Apple's servers, or you have used your computer to jailbreak an iDevice in the past. The link above tells you how to resolve this issue.

  • After i updated my iphone 4s from 8.1.2 to 8.1.3 problem occurred.i cant restore and update my phone?saying that iphone could not be restored,an unknown error ocuurred.please help me?

After i updated my iphone 4s from 8.1.2 to 8.1.3 problem occurred.i cant restore and update my phone?saying that iphone could not be restored,an unknown error ocuurred.please help me?

Thanks for the update and clarification. In researching the issue it seems that the 2003 error code may have something to do with the USB connection. I would use this section of one of the above articles:
Get help with iOS update and restore errors
If the USB connection between your device and computer is interrupted, you might not be able to update or restore.
To narrow down the issue, you can try different equipment:
Use the USB cable that came with your device, or a different Apple USB cable.
Plug your cable into a different USB port directly on your computer. Don't plug it into your keyboard.
    Try a different computer.
Solve other issues with the USB connection, then with your security software.
If you still see the error message, check for hardware issues by following the next section.
    Check for hardware issues
    Related errors: 1, 3, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.
These errors mean that your device or computer might have a hardware issue that stops the update or restore from completing.
Check that your security software and settings aren't blocking your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
Make sure that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.
