Help, unsucessful back up restore of library.

Got a new iPod 120gb for Christmas. Plugged into computer and found not compatable with 10.3.9. My computer is iMac G4 800mhz and can not handle the new 10.5 so I purchased a 10.4 off of ebay and it was a Server version. I was told that I could not just upgrade and so would need to back up everything before install, so I did. I backed up iLife and iTunes both just to be safe. After installing the 10.4, I upgraded it to 10.4.11 and then installed my iLife 04 and upgraded it. All upgrades were via software upgrade. The previous version of iTunes that I had on my computer was iTunes7, I now have iTunes8. I tried to restore the iLife via Backup and the 7 DVD's it was on. All but parts 2 and 3 would install, but part 2 gave me an error 36 message and part 3 wouldn't do anything. Then I tried to restore just the iTunes library via the 4 DVDs that it is on and all the music shows up on each disk when I put it in, but will only download about half of the library. Now I only have 605 out of at least 1200 songs. Please help me. Most of this music was purchased from the iTunes store.

Thanks. I tried that, even deauthorizing and reauthorizing, but it didn't work. It will restore some of the songs then it gets to an audio book and quits. I tried skipping the book, but it won't let me and then everything left on the disc won't load. The crazy thing is, when I put in the disc, everything shows up on the disc. It is like it is there, but will not fully restore. Very Frustrating.

  • Help! Advice for restoring photo library from an external hard drive

Here's the deal. My house was broken into today, and my desktop iMac was stolen, but I still have my external hard drive where I saved photo albums and my iPhoto library. I want to transfer that iPhoto library (from iPhoto 4) onto my MacBook Pro that has iPhoto 6. What is the proper way to install my old photo library and albums onto the laptop with the later version of iPhoto?
Thanks for the help in advance.

    Lori
Sorry to hear of your difficulties.
Simply copy the iPhoto Library Folder from the back up to the Pictures Folder on the MBP and launch iPhoto. It will do the rest.
Alternatively, you can leave the library where it is and hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the Library on the Back Up disk.

After "Restoring iTunes Library backup" it wont link to the files in the iTunes folder. I've followed the procedure as described, and the iTunes folder is in the correct location. iTunes lists all my music correctly (albeit with no artwork), but can't locate any of the files.
I've been restoring my iTunes folder from a backup hard drive to a new computer on which I've downloaded the latest iTunes (10.7). If this is a newer version than the one I backed up with could this be the problem? (I had the latest (to my knowledge) iTunes when I backed up the folder about 3 weeks ago, was this version 10.7?)
Or is the version of iTunes (within recent updates) not an issue when restoring a library?
    Using Windows 7.
    Any help please?

From the top of the page where the scripts live...
The general method of use is to download the script to a folder of your choice, e.g. your Desktop, Downloads folder or create a folder at ...\iTunes\Scripts. Select a playlist or highlight some tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script to execute it. If no specific tracks are selected the script will try to work with all tracks in the current playlist. Some scripts offer a choice of track by track confirmation of changes or fully automatic processing of the selection. Many of the scripts can optionally display a progress bar while running.
You are strongly advised to backup your entire library, or at the very least the iTunes Library.itl file, before use. Test the behaviour of your chosen script on a small group of files first to make sure it does what you want before applying it to large numbers of files.
Most builds of Windows will execute *.vbs scripts when you double-click them. If that doesn't happen then you might need to visit the Add/Remove Programs or Programs & Features control panel to enable the Windows Scripting Host. I can track down details if you have issues.
Backing up and restoring data is an area that is often glossed over. Most people don't try to learn much about it until they've lost something important. (Me too )
If your iTunes library was in the usual layout then normally copying the whole iTunes folder from the User's Music folder in the old computer to the User's Music folder in the new one will usually work fine. Ideally this is done before iTunes is installed so that there is no empty library to replace, and all settings are picked up from the old library. This post contains more details.

  • Possible corrupt music file on back up disc - can't restore iTunes library!

Sold old laptop last week in prep for getting new PC, backed up iTunes library onto DVD disc (whole library went on 4.7GB disc with no problems) - got new PC yesterday, downloaded iTunes 9, inserted back up disc, tried to restore but keeps getting stuck on one song and going no further. Can anyone help with any other suggestions because I'm going nuts! Can't update my iPhone as there's nothing in iTunes to update it with!

Yes, the relative location is the same, the user account has the same short and long lame as before.
I did try to use the preferences to point to the backed up itunes folder. Once when it was on the eHD and once when I put it in the music folder. Unfortunatley no luck.
I will try your idea about using "Consolidate Library"
One other interesting thing I tried a few days ago was to follow the procedure outlined in the apple support section about restoring the library. It has you move the libray xml file to the desk top, trashing one of the other files (I forgot which) and then choosing the xml file placed on the desk top upon starting itunes. I thought it was kind of odd to select the very xml file I was having trouble with so I chose the backed up xml file. It put all of the playlist folders back in duplicate, but the library was still empty (probably becuase the xml file is just a reference file and I hadn't loaded any actual music files) If the consolidate doesn't work, mabye I'll try that again, but also put the folder with the actual files on the computer as well
I'll let you know how "Consolidate" works, thanks for your suggestions!

Try plugging your ipod into your computer. Then start up itunes. Let it load everything. Then click on your ipod and play a song from your ipod's library. Not your itunes library. If it plays the song, then go ahead and stop it, disconnect your ipod, and check the content once again.
I had the same problem and beleive it or not, this worked. I synced my ipod like 5 times before finding this answer on the web. Let me know if I need to clerify anything.

  • Backing up and restoring iPhoto Library

I am currently using Time Machine to back up my iMac, including my iPhoto Library, which is quite large (80 GB). If I have to restore the iPhoto Library, will the photos retain their descriptions so that I an reorganize them?  How about using a cloud-based backup such as Backblaze or Crashplan?

Well that "restore" should work but it's not quite the same as backing up the whole library.
It is too much? Well, I come close to that but - like you - I have a local back up and two remotes (on in my car, one stored at a relatives house. So for the online storage, rather than backing up the entire thing again, instead I just backed up the photos themselves.  There are many options: Flickr, Picasa, SmugMug etc. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you may need to pay.
FWIW I use SmugMug. My logic is...if the Mac fails, I have the local back up, if that's gone I have two more, and then if they're gone, well at least I have the photos. Plus I can view them from any computer in the world.

This is no longer done via iTunes.
Use whatever CD/DVD burner software is installed on your computer.
Add the iTunes media folder to the list of files/folders to burn to disc.

  • Possible to Restore iTunes Library from Back-Up Drive?

    Hi --
I just want to clarify what I've read on another thread about restoring my library from a backup.
I have a machine running XP Pro and I find myself in the unfortunate position of having to reinstall the OS. I regularly back-up my machine to an external hardrive so my iTunes library is safe. After I reinstall XP if I copy the back-up of my library back to my machine will iTunes recongnize everything? All I have to do is copy it back?
    Thanks,
    John

Your plan should work. One thing you need to do is deauthorize the computer prior to the reinstall. If you have purchased music & don't deauthorize, iTunes will view the system as new & will require another authorization.

I backed up to my PC and attempted restore but I keep getting an error message that "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free space is available." I have a 32GB iPhone; only 13GB used!!!  HELP!  iCloud backup/restore did not work either! How can I resolve this problem to restore from back up.

If you're not a developer then you really should not have upgraded.
I'm unsure how you can fix this as you have already done a back-up on iOS 7 and apple don't support firmware downgrades.

  • Restoring iTunes library from Time Machine backup -- help!

I'm trying to restore my iTunes library from TM backup. I can restore songs from individual albums, but if I try to restore multiple albums at once I get this error: "The operation can’t be completed because you don't have permission to access [name of file containing a song]." At this rate, it will take days to restore my library. Help! There must be a better way!
