Help: updating from 6 year old tech

Hi forum,
I currently have an old 12" toshiba laptop. I am long overdue to update my computer equipment, my primary intention is so i can start collecting quality photo and video memories of my wife, future kids, holidays special events etc.
Originally i had thought i would like to use a windows 7 machine with adobe CS5 photoshop and premiere pro. I heard a bit about the "MPE" and liked the idea of real time rendering. I started doing research on many forums and for a long time thought i would buy a macbook pro with a U2711" dell monitor. I have a Canon 60D to take decent photos and 1080p HD video with a big tv i could also display them on when the family and friends are at my home. Over time my research has taken me in many different directions and now i just can't seem to decide what is best for me?! HP envy 14, XPS 14, ASUS, Sager, Clevo, waiting for newer notebooks or macbook airs etc argh its doing my head in.
I think ideally i would like a 12" size laptop with the power and performance of the latest sandy bridge quad core desktop computer, "warrior" GPU with a 1080p display and a SSD for the OS just for good measure. I know this sounds absolutely ridiculous but this too me would be perfect, i could easily travel with a light notebook and then at home hook it up to a big 24-27 inch monitor. Is something like this at all possible? I'd rather not have two computers because i feel i will have documents and photos here and there (not organised in one location, even though i'd have external storage drives), towers take up space etc id rather just one computer! but i suppose i might have to go down that path of two machines for decent home video editing?

Hi Harm, thankyou for that article and other posts. At this stage I am still inclined towards the 2600K Build. This is my latest shopping list.
I'm also looking for recommendations for a good internal blu ray burner / reader.
This computer is to be hooked up to either the Dell U2410 or U2711 monitor at this stage.
Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome before I pull the trigger.

I turned on my new iMac for the first time today and set it up using a backup on Time Machine from my old Macbook, which is running OS X 10.9.5 and has iPhoto version 8.1.2. When I went to open iPhoto on the new computer, it said I had to update the photos to work with the new version. Now, my photos from part of July 26, 2014 and onwards do not show up in the new iPhoto. The albums and spaces for the photos are there, but only a gray triangle with exclamation point shows in their place. Every other photo from 2003 to half of July 26, 2014 appears to have updated without issue. None of the fixes/rebuilds I tried worked. When I open up TimeMachine, it has no backups that I can use for the new computer (perhaps, because I wanted to still have access to use my old backups for my old laptop so told it not to use them for the new computer). My most recent half a year's photos are the ones I need the most. How do I make them appear on my new iMac?

Do you still have the old Mac? Then check, if the iPhoto Library has the newer events from July 26 onwards.
If yes, copy the iPhoto library from the old Mac to the new mac by connecting both computers. And then try to upgrade the copied library.
If you no longer have access to the old mac, you could try to inherit the backup of the old Mac and try to restore the iPhoto Library from it.

No digital output from 6 year old Sound Blaster C

Hey Everyone, I'm new to this board and have a question. I recently purchased a custom-built computer with an ASRock PCI Express motherboard with
onboard speaker and mic inputs. I have Boston Acoustic BA735 digtal speakers. I can only get
analog from the onboard sound. I removed and installed my 6 year old Sound Blaster Li've
Value card (Model # M48309403265) from my old Gateway PC into my new one, and installed
the Li'veDrvUni-Pack update for Windows XP. I can't get any digital or analog output from the
card. I tried my mic on the onboard input, but kept getting pulses at regular intervals on
my WAVforms or sonographs. I plugged the mic into my old Sound Blaster card and the pulses
disappeared, so I know the mic is working. With all the info I've provided, is there a patch
or update or anything for my old Sound Blaster Li've card to get digital output?
I tried the Sound Blaster Li've 24 Bit card, but returned it because the same input for the
speakers is the same for the mic. Also, there's no gameport on it.

Yo, BadBoy! Phew! Man, you helped me out a bunch. I had to do some tinkerin' between the drivers from Gateway and the Li'veDrvUni-Pack. I had to install it without the windows drivers from Li'veDrv... and start clean. I'm now getting digital output and my mic is working on my old card. I can't get the Creative Surround Mixer from my old card's software, or from Li'veDrv.. but I can use Windows' Volume Control. How to get audio to tv from 4 year old macbook pro

I have a 4 year old macbook pro, i am trying to view it on my samsung tv, i can get video thru the mini port adapter and hdmi cable, but i cant get audio?

If you Macbook Pro is a 2009 model the mini display port does not carry audio. You must use a separate audio cable from your computer's audio out to your TV's audio in.

Upgrading from 10 year old powerbook

I have a ten year old powerbook & need a new machine. Is the basic new IMac going to seem like light years ahead of what I've been using or should I bump up the spec & hope that in another ten years I will consider it money well spent or wish that I'd saved the extra £700 and just bought each new basic model as they improve, say every 3 to 4 years?

You should bear in mind that upgrading hardware at this point will also require a major software upgrade. For example, the last version that runs on OS 10.7 or 10.8 is Photoshop CS3. None of your 10 year old software will even run. That is because power pc apps just do not run on Lion or Mountain Lion.
So, you are looking at a substantial investment, for both hardware and software. (For what it's worth, I recently went through this process with a family member.)
In pure dollars and cents (pounds and pennies?) terms, I think it makes sense to stick with the old for as long as you can, and make the switch only when you have to....

Help! My four year old messed up my computer.

I put my four year old in front of photobooth today while I was getting a quick shower. When I came back 5 minutes later, my whole computer was messed up. It is like he reset everything, in fact, it is almost identical to the day that I bought it. No email, no homepage, no favs, none of my icons in dock, no desktop picture. What on earth could he have done and is there anyway I can put it back like it was? I am so frustrated and don't know what to do.

Ok, I don't see another house icon with my short name on it. What I do find that is standing out to me is this...
In my user name (house icon) folder, are more folders, right?
There are two that read "Library". One of these has some funny character in it like he was typing to change the name. One of them has all of my things in it, the other does not. The was I can confirm this is in the mail folder of this library folder. The one that he appears to have changed the name...when I open the mail folder there is my email account, my saved mail, and such.
In the other one (the one that looks untouched, there are far fewer icons, and it just don't look personalized if you know what I mean (when I look around in the folders).
What could this mean? I really have a hunch this has something to do with it.

Over the years I have backed up my ifoto albums on discs. Now with the new ifoto in 10.7.5 I can't see the fotos from five year old discs--only a dotted line outline of the fotos, all black and white; no images. What gives? and how can I view them?

If you're running iPhoto 9.5 you'll need to follow these directions in order to view disk created by previous versions of iPhoto:
1 - Copy the library from the disk to the Desktop.
2 - Double click on the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool to launch it and select the library on the desktop to convert.
3 - Once that is done you can open it with iPhoto 9.5.

Photoshop CC does not open a RAW NEF file with Camera Raw 8.5. Also, my Help Update gives me an old version.

I've tried updating the plug-in using PS Help CC but it updates with an old version. I downloaded 8.5 and did a manual install but Photoshop doesn't recognize it and the plug-in "cannot be found." I can see the plug-in on the HD drive where it was supposed to go. What am I missing here?

Help updating from 10.7.4?

I can not update my system from os x 10.7.4. I have been trying for months now and have read posts from others experiencing the same issues. I have followed the advice of others to no avail. I can't update iTunes either.
I have used the regular 'Software update' program, but when I get to the part of restarting to install, I get the message "An error has occured" and then the screen just sits grey until I hold the button to manually shut down.
I have tried to update using files directly from the apple store too.
I get right to end of the process, then it all goes bad.
I really want to update...........Please help.

I have just tried to install that update but again it tells me "The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact software manufacturer for assistance"
Is there some way of finding what is wrong?

Need help -- Updating from 2.0 to 3.1 is taking forever

I have been trying to update my iPhone 3G for the past 3 days and it wont work.
The backing up part is taking more than 4 hours to get to 25%. What can I do to speed this up.
I have tried clearing the cache on my phone and deleting some of my pictures from the camera roll and still really slow.

I have the snow leopard CD but when I put this into the Disc drive it spits it back out to me after a few minutes. I then tried to use the CD from an external Disc Drive and I am getting an USB error saying the device is taking to much power and the USB port will be deactivated. I then connected my mac to my friends mac and placed the CD in his disc drive and tried to install snow leopard through his machine. When i click on the install mac osx it tells me that "the application "install Mac OS X" cannot be used from this volume. I then tried the remote install osx but when I restart my machine and hold the option key it does not give me the option to select the start up disc.
Do i have any further options to install snow leopard

Upgrading from 10 year old G4-400 to Mac Mini - what old files work?

Even tho' my old G4 (OS 10.3.9) still works, I'm upgrading to a Mac Mini (MB464LL/A) (2 GHz, 2 GB, 320 GB) with Leopard (Snow Leopard included, not installed). Since the eBay listing didn't mention including iLife or iWorks, will I be able to read my old Appleworks 6 documents? I assume that I'll have to get a Photoshop upgrade to see my old docs from Version 8.
Any other apps needed? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

You can still use Appleworks. I have a brand new mac mini with Snow Leopard and use Appleworks every day. Still runs perfectly fine. Rosetta I believe is the software Apple includes to run older programs like Appleworks. You could probably run all your old programs.
Photoshop? You'd be better off getting at least a upgrade to the first version that ran on Intel macs. CS3. Or of course, CS5. Other programs vary. I use Office Mac 2004 every day...no upgrade needed. I use CS4, haven't gotten CS5 yet. Runs fine.
With Leopard, you'll be fine for most things. The best way to find out for sure though, is to just install things and give it a go. Some will be fine, some will run slowly, or not install. Give us a list of all your programs other than Appleworks and Photoshop, and someone can chime in with their experience.
iWorks will open Appleworks. I tried it a few times.
Can you do 4 gigs of ram in the 2ghz model? Don't recall. Might be nice to throw 4 in there. Not necessary though.

Need help updating from reader 9 to reader 10

I have a Vista PC that currently has Adobe reader 9.
I have found out that Reader 9 is no longer supported by Adobe so I won't be getting anymore security updates.
And because I have a Vista machine I can't upgrade to Adobe reader 11.
So when I try to update reader 9( hit check for update) it does not give me the option to upgrade to reader 10
So:
1. How do I do a good uninstall of Reader 9?
    Can I do so by just uninstalling from the list if programs?
    Do I need to remove any additional files and or folders?
2. How do I install Reader 10?
    If I go to the link for reader , it has reader 11 which I can't use.
    I just use reader to read PDF docs I don't create any so not thinking I need the whole reader program

Adobe Reader 9 can be uninstalled normally by uninstalling a program from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
To install Adobe Reader 10 please visit, http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/
Choose the operating system, Language and the Acrobat 10 from the drop down.
