Help updating to Tiger

Ok...I'm still running on version 10.2.8. This is my first computer (eMac) and I guess I never really realized how important it is to do these updates. Anyway...I asked about updating a few months ago and here is the advice I was given at that time:
To upgrade directly to Tiger you need to purchase the Tiger DVD. You do not need your Jaguar installation CD. While waiting on your Tiger DVD you should make a bootable backup of your hard drive to an external Firewire drive.
When you receive the Tiger DVD do the following:
Open Disk Utility from your Utilities folder on your startup drive. Select your startup volume from the list on the left, then click on the First Aid tab in the DU main window. Click on the Repair Permissions button.
Then do the following:
Boot from the Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer. If the hard drive is OK, then proceed to install Tiger. When you reach the phase for selecting the target or destination drive, click on your startup drive, then click on the Options button. Select the Upgrade option and click on OK.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.0.6 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Do not attempt to upgrade to Tiger unless the hard drive is verified as OK per the above instructions.
So I finally just purchased the Tiger Install Discs. I followed his instructions and of course there were unfixable errors. So according to this guy I need to buy another disc to fix the errors or "reformat the drive and reinstall OS X."
Two questions:
1. If I buy one of those discs do I have to have the latest versions that he mentioned? Or can I get older versions (DiscWarrior 3.0.2, for example).
2. What exactly does it mean to reformat the drive? I don't know how to do that. And will I need my original install disc? Because I can't find it...

OK, you did make a bootable backup, or clone, of your hard drive, right? It must be a clone.
As scb said you can boot from your external HD, load Disk Warrior on that and run the repairs from there. DW is expensive but well worth having.
If you don't want to get it then make sure your backup is up to date, then start up off your Tiger install disk and for install options choose Erase and Install. This will wipe your hard drive clean (which is why backup is so important), and install a fresh, sparkling new system. This pretty much solves any and all problems.
When you boot from your hard drive for the first time it will take you through some basic setup things, what you want to keep an eye out for is when it asks you if you want to use Migration Assistant. Say yes and follow instructions, it's pretty simple. You will select your backup clone (it must be a clone) and it will move all your applications, settings and files over to the new Tiger system. Go and have some coffee, it will take a while.
After that Repair Permissions with Disk Utility, then download the full upgrade to 10.4.6. The install disk will either be 10.4 or 10.4.3 so you will need to upgrade. After restarting Repair Permissions again.
You should be good to go. If you run into any problems you'll still have your old system on the external and can boot from that if needed, but with an erased drive you should have no problems. If you do the most likely culprit will be apps that need to be upgraded to Tiger versions.

    Some part of the OS is messed up... I've heard that if you Deltas you must stick with those, if you do Combos you must stick with those, no idea if it's true, as I always use the bigger Combo Updates.
    Most likely the best solution for both of you is an Archive & Install...

  • Garbled Text/Odd font in Safari since updating to Tiger.  Java related?

    I seem to be having a problem with Safari since I updated to Tiger.
    I'm running Safari 2.0.3, and have been encountering problems with garbled text in a strange font when Safari loads certain pages. The text often overlaps making it impossible to read.
    A friend thinks it might be Java related. I've tried clearing the cache and resetting Java, but it hasn't helped.

    On the Petfinder.com page specifically, if I go directly to their home site everything is fine, but once I try and search the results come up all messed up.
    I also have a problem with it when I try andl log into gmail. "Loading" comes up on the screen in the garbled text font as if it's trying to load an applet, but nothing happens. I eventually get the spinning rainbow of death and have to force quit.
    Any ideas?

    I am not an expert in font issues, but you may have corrupt fonts. Open "font book.' Select all and run resolve duplicates. Then select all and run validate fonts. I also have read that Helvetica fractional fonts have caused some rendering problems.
    I would also clear the Safari cache again.

    I am currently operating on OS X 10.2.8 on an iBook. I have Microsoft Office 2004 installed and have already used all remaining disk installs. I would like to update to Tiger and have purchased the software but am concerned that the update will screw up my Microsoft Office software. Anyone have any experience with this?     Even if it didn't, you could still re-install it. Whether you've used up "all remaining disk installs" makes no difference, as when you reinstall it, you wouldn't be installing an additional copy. You'd be reinstalling the same copy.

  • Updated to Tiger and get kernel panics

    Hi,
    I updated my desktop G4 (quicksilver) to Tiger last week, and have suddenly started getting kernel panics. I am not sure what to do about it, other than trying to reinstall Tiger. It didn't happen the first few days of Tiger, so I am not sure it's the OS. Do I need to be worried about my drive? could i lose information with this?
    I do have one bad hard drive inside the machine which crashed in November; I haven't removed it yet. Would removing that bad drive correct the issue? There is a 2nd drive in the machine that is fine and an external firewire drive that is now my main book drive.
    Or could the panic be the result of peripherals, such as sound cards, MIDI gear, printer? or something like software? I use a lot of 3rd party software and have updated quite a few of them in the past week, since updating to Tiger. I did call Apple Care and they suggested removing all external devices and apps...way too much if I don't need to do it.

    What an incredible answer. I am posting the panic log here, but I remembered that I recently just plugged in my MIDI yamaha clavinova to my sound card, and that's when the panics began. Could be a coincidence, but I unplugged it to see if they stop.
    I will also remove the bad drive. It crashed in November. Disk first aid was unable to repair it and the genius at the apple store told me that something physically broke inside the drive, so there is no salvation for it. I was able to recover most data before it all disappeared, luckily. I just haven't gotten around to removing it and reinstalling the original apple drive.

  • Will update from Tiger affect Automatic Software Update?

    Hi guys.
    It's my first question here. I purchased a MacBook approx 3 years ago from Apple Store which got Tiger(10.4.11) installed.
    I would like to update to Snow Leopard because I need to upgrade from Adobe CS3 to CS5. My question is if I buy the Snow Leopard disc from Apple Store and upgrade from Tiger will automatic software update and other stuff work?

    If you are asking if Software Update will automatically update Snow Leopard & other Apple-supplied software to the latest versions during or immediately after the upgrade, the answer is no. The upgrade should preserve whatever preferences you set for Software Update in Tiger, so depending on them you may see no automatic update notifications, notifications only after the interval for checks you have set has elapsed, or whatever.
    Remember that it is highly recommended that you backup your HD, or at least your important data, before applying any upgrade or update. If you do that, you may want to run Software Update as soon as you verify that the upgrade went as expected, & let it recommend & install all the updates your system needs to bring it up to date.

  • Help Installing OSX Tiger on iMac G4, seems HD Volume Structure corrupted

    I need help Installing OSX Tiger on an iMac G4 800MHz 17" Flat Screen LCD, 80 GB Hard Drive, 256MB RAM, DVD-R/CD-RW Super Drive, model# M8812LL/A. I have a Tiger install DVD and i put it in the drive and everything is fine....I go through the steps and when it gets to "Preparing the Disk" - "Verifying destination volume"....it just sits and nothing happens. It will go on for 20+ minutes or so and then the installer will quit saying there was errors during the update. Anyone got any idea what is happening? I'm running OSX 10.3 Panther currently. I just tried running Disk Utility using the install DVD.....it attempted three times and couldn't repair --- I then went out and purhased DiskWarrior --- I boot from that disk, it begins to run; then as it is repairing the volume it freezes and stays frozen for hours. I've rebooted and tried it numerous times with no luck. Is the HD no good? Should I just do a complete reinstall of Tiger and erase everything? I'd rather not, but I backed everthing up in case I need to. Also, when I ran TechTool Deluxe from the booted CD, it said the Volume Structure was corrupted. My Tiger disc is a retail full install disc that I purchased.

    Use Disk Utility to Restore to a FW drive.
    Use one of your FW drives, and create a 24GB partition - later you can reuse this for your emergency boot drive). Restore the DVD to FW volume. Boot from there to install with - very fast.
    Low level format is what you probably want/need and the only way to do that is ERASE with the option to ZERO-ALL (after you backup any files you don't now have on disk or DVD.... and where are the backups?).
    When you install it will also verify the DVD install disk itself.
    Have you tried using FSCK from the command line? Or do you no longer have a valid system on the boot drive? Nothing to lose it seems at this point from trying. Just hold down COMMAND + S on startup. At the prompt, follow direction to type:
    /sbin/fsck -fy

    Your iPhone's iOS must be same or newer than the one in backups. In your case it is older so you need to update your iPhone and then recover it with backup.

    Of note there is a new AMD Catalyst Omega driver released earlier in the week that brings 5K resolution to AMD graphics cards. Here is the link (support.ad.com/en-us/download) to the AMD site. But none of these work with my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2014), Windows 8 bootcamp.

    Are you updating from the Editor, if not go to Expert Mode and click:
    Help >> Updates
    But check first under the Help menu that you are signed-in - your email address used for you Adobe ID should be visible. You should be able to update to v8.5

It has the AMD Graphic Driver on this page. You could also update the drivers a couple other ways.  1. Using the HP Support Assistant2. Going into the Device Manager, Right click on the AMD Graphic and doing an update.  You had also mentioned that you wanted to actually talk to someone from HP.   • In Photoshop CC, Help Updates shows no updates but ACR is 8.0

    Im on Windows 8, 64 bit.  I have tried clearing my AAM cache and that hasn't helped.  I tried downloading a patcher but it only trys to install on PS CS6.  FOr some reason it won't register that I need to update Camera Raw to 8.1.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much.

    I was able to update PS-CC to ACR 8.1 using the following method:
    I have CS6 already installed and already updated to ACR 8.1.
    Today the Adobe Application Manager seemed to update itself to the Creative Cloud manager so I used that to download and install the Try version of Photoshop CC.
    Photoshop CC installs with ACR 8.0; however, if I do a Help / Updates… in PS CC I get the old Adobe Application Manager back, not the Creative Cloud app, and the AAM does find the ACR 8.1 update compatible with PS-CC as well as the CSXS Extensions 4 update for CC that the CC Manager installed for CS6 this morning,
    So it seems that the older AAM knows how to update PS-CC and the newer CCM knows how to update the older PS-CS6.
