HELP! upgrading from 10.2.8 on a powerpc g3 500mhz 640 mb

Please help! after my computer sadly died, i had to wipe it then reinstall old os x 10.2.8. (originally came with os x 9, however the apple store kindly put on a newer os x when i had problems last year (the orignial os x 9 discs were damaged)
now my safari browser 1.0.3 (v 85.8.1) fails to work on 99% of websites. is there any way i can upgrade my operating system so it supports a newer version of safari.
i am unfortunately not very computer literate, but very able to follow instructions! i'm not in a great position as the apple people would no longer help with my "vintage" mac :o( but im convinced it can be fixed as they managed to do it last year.
thanks
Jo

Hello joaadams,
First of all, Welcome to the  Discussion forums!
a pal had a copy of 10.4.10 but my computer just spits the discs straight back out
I assume this disk was probably machine specific disk for 10.4 and not full retail disks? Remember, also, that Tiger disks are dvd and not cd (there was a special dvd to cd exchange program originally offered but this is no longer available form Apple to my knowledge). So if your machine is cdrom drive and not a combo drive or dvd drive then you would need to install via another Mac and Firewire using Firewire Target Disk Mode.
10.4 Tiger full retail disks sell at a premium these days but can be found through a variety of online resellers such as on ebay etc. Be careful when purchasing as you need "Full Retail Install" disks and not machine specific or upgrade disks.
If you upgrade to 10.4 and then update to 10.4.11 you can use a later version of Safari browser.
If you find you cannot upgrade to Tiger 10.4 you might try upgrading, after purchasing some OS 10.3 Retail install disks (again on a source such as ebay and update-able to 10.3.9) and then you could use a slightly more updated browser such as Firefox or my recomendation would be Camino 1.6.6. Be aware though of System requirements for any of these browsers....read carefully. Panther Full Retail Install disks can be found much cheaper than Tiger 10.4 disks but are still limited much more than the later 10.4 OS.
post back with any further questions and/or comments,

  • Need help upgrading from Lion 10.6.8 to Lion 10.7.2.

I want to upgrade from Lion 10.6.8 to Lion 10.7.2 in order to use iCloud that is on my other devices.  The software updater on my Mac says there are no updates available.  What to do to get the latest OS?

10.6.8 is Snow Leopard, not Lion. Lion is 10.7.x. Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. The installed version will be shown in the display window.
If you are running 10.7 or 10.7.1 you can download the OS X Lion Update 10.7.2 Client Combo.

This forced me to upgrade itunes as well. Now when I plug in the second phone still on 5.1.1 itunes does not see it. What do I do? I want to back up the phone before upgrading it to iOS 6 and I do not want to use icloud. Is my only option to upgrade from the phone without having backed it up or can I somehow get itunes to see it?

  • Need help upgrading from Mail 2.1.3 to 3.5

I just upgraded from 10.4 to 10.5. I bought a new disk to install 10.5 on and have the old disk with 10.4 in a USB enclosure. I do not want to use the migration assistant because I'm trying to start with a completely fresh system (first time since 10.0).
I thought importing my mail would be as simple as copying ~/Library/Mail (which is about 3GB) and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist but it doesn't seem to want to work.
After copying, I start up mail and it asks me if I want to upgrade my mail database. I click continue and a short time later it says its finished. All of my folders and mailboxes appear, but they are empty.
At this point, mail will not quit, although the application does not appear to be frozen or busy. Command-Q causes the file menu to flash but nothing happens. If I force quit it and restart it, the mail viewer will not open, nor will Mail.app quit.
My next plan was to try and boot back into 10.4 and see if there was some way to export my mail from 2.1.3.... before I attempt to do that, does anyone have any other suggestions?

Did you try repairing permissions yet? Just because you have a fresh install of Mac OS X doesn't mean everything is as it should be. And you may not know that the mail format changed from 10.4 to 10.5, so you should try rebuilding your Mail index like this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
    3. Restart Mail, wait for it to import your existing messages, then check to see if you have access to your older mail from 10.4.

  • Help upgrading from Tiger to Leopard

I need to upgrade from Tiger to Leopard for Quickbooks 2009; can you point me to some resources that will walk me through the process (and point out any pitfalls)? Also is the product that outfits like Amazon or Buy.com are selling what I need to do the upgrade?
    Thanks.

    Hi ramonelkalsaw;
The only thing I would add it that while the upgrade process does claim that it will preserve things for you I would add that creating a bootable clone before starting the upgrade process is a good thing. It gives you an easy way to get back to where you were before you started very quickly just in case something goes wrong.

  • Help - upgrading from Tiger to Snow Leopard AND new larger hard drive, MBP

    Howdy!
My iPhone has finally demanded that I upgrade my MBP from Tiger. And as if by coincidence, my now puny 100GB internal drive is packed full with less than a gig free most of the time. (10% free is the MINIMUM free allowance, I know!!) I run old copies of Adobe CS2, Quark, Quickbooks, Microsoft Office... would love to keep them working without purchasing upgrades, but probably isn't a realistic hope. None of it is mission critical at this point.
So I've purchased the $29 Snow Leopard DVD (from a reseller - it says CPU Drop-In DVD Version 10.6 on the disk), and a new 750GB internal drive (same reseller - The drive is a 2.5" SATA 5400RPM 8MB-Buffer Hard Drive (9MM Slim) (RoHS Green Friendly)), to get with the times.
    My other resources include:
    - two 1TB LaCie external drives with FW and USB2 ports
    - one other LaCie external drive - I think 360GB?
    - Retrospect 5.0 (most of my backups are encrypted Retrospect files on those three LaCie external drives, but there's some room on them)
    - a $22 USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE adapter with AC power, to access whatever laptop drive might be without an enclosure temporarily
    - a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner software
    - I just ordered an upgrade to my ancient (OS9) copy of DiskWarrior
    - A monster UPS battery backup and line conditioner that everything plugs into for this process
It has been a long time since I've DIY'd any undertaking this complex, and I'm looking for advice on what to do first, how to go about this.
    Here's my setup:
    Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro1,1
    Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP11.0055.B08
    SMC Version: 1.2f10
I'm guessing I should do it like this, PLEASE EDIT or make suggestions or tell me what I forgot to do before I do it!!
    1. Back up everything to at least two external locations! Also, make a bootable copy of my current internal drive in its own volume, to at least one external drive that is formatted in HFS+ GUID partition style, with Carbon Copy Cloner (would Retrospect work well for this instead?).
    2. Free up at least 20GB on the current internal drive (100GB). Hopefully 30GB.
    3. Run Disk Utility on the current internal drive. Fix any problems. (Should I hit it with DiskWarrior instead?)
    4. Format the new 750GB drive to HFS+, GUID partitions. (How long will that take? Can I do it with the USB-SATA cable adapter, sitting on my desk, or does it have to be in an enclosure? The adapter has AC power)
    5. Run Disk Utility (or DiskWarrior?) on the new internal drive in its temporarily external position. Fix any problems.
    6. Boot off the Snow Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD and install onto both drives. (Will this version of the DVD I have wipe all files when it installs to a disk???)
    7. See how they run. Boot off the old 100GB internal drive, boot off the new to-be-internal 750GB drive. Panic if it's not going well.
    8. If the current internal 100GB drive is rocking Snow Leopard and my familiar files and apps seem somewhat functional, use Carbon Copy Cloner to recreate the volume on the new larger drive. Then swap the drives physically. (Links to good step-by-step instructions on this part would be much appreciated here!!)
    9. If the Snow Leopard DVD overwrote or snuffed out my familiar files and apps on the old internal drive, sigh deeply, then swap the drives physically. Use CCC (or Retrospect? or Migration Assistant?) to fetch my junk from the old internal drive's backup and plunk it on the new bigger internal drive (now installed).
    10. See how it runs. Shake my fist at the sky over the planned obsolescence of technology paired with the seductive power of my iPhone. Grumpily upgrade the software that I actually create income with.
Please help! I am just faking it here based on a few message boards I've read. Will this actually work properly?
    Thanks!

Howdy slowpoke43, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Please help! I am just faking it here based on a few message boards I've read. Will this actually work properly?
LOL, if your faking it you're the best!
    1. Yes, absolutely... no CCC would be best in my experience/opinion.
    2. Yes, the more he better... Free Space is no longer our Free Space, but OSX's.
    3. Indeed, & if you have the correct version of DW, do that.
    4. Yes, not long, A/C power is great.
    How to format your disks...

(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)
Thanks to Pondini, Formatting,  Partitioning, Verifying,  and  Repairing  Disks...
    http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html
    6. Yes, boot off the 10.6 DVD, & no Snow Leopard does by default what we used to call an Archive & Install, saves & updates all your info, APPs, Music, etc., it may quarantine a few things or not but will tell you.
    7. Absolutely, but Panic won't be needed with your great preparation & Bootable Backups!
    8. Not quite sure I understand, but run SL for a few days before you do anything.
    9. Yeah, but again with you doing everything right from the gitgo, I can't picture that happening.
    10. Yes indeed, the hangup with yours is that it only holds 2GB of RAM... a pain in 10.5 & up IME.
Again let me say... GONGRATS, I've never ever seen anybody so well prepared & informed despite your diffidence!

  • Need help upgrading from iPhoto 2... keep photo comments?

I currently have iPhoto 2 that originally came with my eMac. I have recently upgraded the operating system to the 10.4.11. I have tons of photos in iPhoto 2. Ultimately, this has slowed down the response time when working in iPhoto.
I am trying to figure out how the comments that I write for each photo stays with the photo after I back it up to my external hard drive, iBook? Or, how can I keep the comments to the photo when I email the photos?
After doing some research, it looks like I need to upgrade to a current iPhoto to be able to do this. Is this correct? Will a current iPhoto version keep the comments with that photo when saved or sent elsewhere? What is the best way to upgrade and how do I go about doing this?
Is there anyway to backup the photos on disc with the comments included? Or, can the comments be printed out to a thumbnail size of each photo for record keeping?
I hope you can HELP with this "photo comments" dilemma... Thanks.

  • Help - upgrade from OS 8.6 to OS 10.3.9

I am trying to breathe life into our slot loading G3iMac. It currently runs OS 8.6 I know I need to update the firmware but it says it needs OS 9.1 to upgrade firmware. Do I need to purchase and install OS 9 or can I simply upgrade the firmware and install OS 10.3.9?
    imac Mac OS X (10.3.9)
imac, emac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi, Kirei -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
If your iBook is running OS 8.6 now, then it is one of the first iBook model series. This means it can not use the latest version of OSX, OSX 10.4 (Tiger).
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/requirements.html
However, it should be able to use any earlier version of OSX.
Before considering installing OSX, or even booting the machine to a disk that boots to OSX, make sure the firmware on that machine has been updated to the latest version for it, iBook Firmware Update 4.1.7.
    Article #86117 - Firmware Updates
Note that that firmware update requires that the machine be booted to OS 9.1 in order for it to be installed. This means you will need to acquire a retail OS 9.1 Install CD, install that OS (preferrably via a Clean Install - note that a Clean Install does not remove anything), then install the firmware update.
Article #58176 - Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9: Performing a Clean Installation
OS 8.6 and OS 9 software will not run unaided in OSX. Unless you plan on replacing all of your current software, you will need to have an install of OS 9.1 (or 9.2.1 or 9.2.2) on the drive for use as Classic. Classic is a full-install of OS 9 which is used as a program within OSX to provide an environment in which many OS 9 programs can be run.
You can often get retail OS 9 Install CDs at places like these -
    http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/index.html - Apple Reseller
    http://www.applerescue.com/
    EBay is another possibility.
Regardless of the source, be sure to get a retail OS 9 Install CD - those are white, with a large gold 9 on them. Retail OS 9 Install CD's have a universal installer; model-specific Install CD's do not.
In case you need any of the OS 9 download updates -
Article #75103 - Mac OS 9.1 - Download and Info
Article #120030 - Mac OS 9.2.1 - Download and Info
Article #75186 - Mac OS 9.2.2 - Download and Info
Other things to consider before going to OSX -
    • RAM. You have not stated how much physical RAM you have in the machine. Although as little as 128MB of RAM meets the specified requirements for OSX 10.3 and earlier, it is minimal especially if you will be using Classic. A more realistic minimum is 256MB; more is better. Your machine can hold a bit over 500MB.
    • Hard drive space. OSX will need 3-plus GB of free space in order to install it; this does not include space needed by new OSX programs. If your drive is the original, you may not have sufficient free space. In addition, Classic (OS 9) will need space if you are going to use it, as well as its programs.
You may want to consider replacing your hard drive with a larger one in order to accommodate the new software. If you do so, be aware that your model is subject to the 8GB limit for being able to use OS's installed on the hard drive - all OS's must be installed within the first 8GB of hard drive space. In practice, this means that if the drive is 8GB or larger then it must be partitioned such that the first partition (the one for the OS's) is a bit less than 8GB (7.7GB is a good size).
Article #25249 - Gray or White Screen After Hard Drive Upgrade
Article #106235 - OSX: Disk Appears "Grayed Out" in Installer
Such partitioning can be done using your OS 8.6 Install CD or any OS 9 Install CD. The utility to use for that is Drive Setup.
    Using Drive Setup
It can also be done using OSX's Disk Utility while booted to an OSX Install CD. If you use that, be sure to select the option to install OS 9 drivers, else the machine will not be able to boot to OS 9 from that drive, and that drive will not be visible when the machine is booted to OS 9 (such as on a CD).

  • Please help upgrade from 10.4.11 to snow leopard

Hello. I have a client that is having trouble using a web based email I set up for him (Open Xchange). I wasn't having the same problems on my end, so I asked what he was running. It is a macbook 2.16ghz from mid 2007 and he's running 10.4.11.
I would like to upgrade him to snow leopard, but I'm having a hard time trying to find it. I found an upgrade on download.com but not sure it will work since I believe it requires leopard which is another one I can't find. I tried the apple site with no luck and I would feel better getting it from them since I'm doing this to someone else's computer.
Once I get it I read it's best to do a clean install, but for now if someone can tell me what's best I'd appreciate it. Do leopard then snow leopard or direct to snow leopard?
I have an older copy of snow leopard myself, will that work? I purchased it separately--didn't come with computer.
    Thanks!

Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
    you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.

I need this function by Monday. Any help out there? I've tried some of the install troubleshooting, but they just don't answer this question.

Well, does your computer actually support the required features? Is OpenGL enabled in PS? If not, you can't do anything with 3D. OpenGL support is mandatory. If it doesn't work you can try to update your graphics driver, but otherwise there is no way to enforce it. Also did you uninstall your Design Standard before installing Premium? if it's still using the old serioal number, then the features wouldn't show up in PS, eitehr.
